Wike originally wanted to be considered for VP, primarily because he believes he represents the SS as well as having a claim to being "Igbo" to some extent that his ethnic group is sometimes grouped into the larger SE Igbo body.

In some of Nigeria's more conservative power circles in the North and SW, anyone from the SS area who has an Igbo name is considered Igbo, as seen from Buhari's statements on some of his appointments. And SW PDP's reaction to Uche Secondus being selected PDP party Chairman, SW PDP accused PDP of having an "Igbo man as Chairman" although Uche Secondus is a "Delta Man" from Rivers.

As such, Wike was hoping to be the PDP VP candidate under a strong Northerner, who in a VP capacity could sweep and appeal to the SE who feels marginalized from the Center, while simultaneously appealing to his home region the SS, since their son Goodluck was removed "mid-term" due to the Presidency election loss.

The next step for Wike after serving as VP, would've been to use the rotational turn set aside for Igbo, and the South by and large, as he to some extent can make such a claim to being an "Igbo Man" who is also a "Deltan," and once again appeal to both the SE/SS to be their consensus candidate.

This is a tricky stance as he may have to face opposition from 2 geopolitical zones with their own political agendas. Ijaw may want to take any turn left to the SS as they view "SS Igbos" as not true sons of the soil, and the SE may have objected as they see SS Igbos as politically Niger Deltans, except for very few instances like Okonjo-Iweala.

This VP/Presidency ambition is one of the main reasons he was playing a large part to ensure the survival of PDP. However, the SE made a firm decision to select an Igbo person directly from the SE geopolitical zone and Wike who has been floating the party in certain instances felt slighted and may cross carpet since his long term gamble appears to be scuttled.

It's left to see how he plays this one out, but politics at his level is not a game of loyalty, but one of personal interest.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that there is no iota of doubt that the APC-led Federal Government has failed Nigerians, necessitating the need for a new leadership in 2019.


Wike further stated that the visit of four South-South Governors to President Muhammadu Buhari had no political connotation, noting that the governors were in the Presidential Villa to discuss the development of the Niger Delta.

He spoke in an interview with Channels Television Roadmap 2019.


He noted: “Our meeting with the President had nothing to do with politics. It was strictly for the benefit of the South-South.

“There is no personal problem between the President and myself. He came to Port Harcourt to commission a project that would add value and I had to be there.

“But when it comes to politics, I say no, the party of the President has performed poorly. It has failed Nigerians. The APC is not doing well. But when it comes to governance, you give the President that respect. ”


Commenting on the zoning of the PDP Vice Presidential Candidate to the South-East and eventual nomination of Former Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, Governor Wike stated that contrary to political insinuations, he played no role in the emergence of Peter Obi.

Governor Wike stated: “I never nominated Peter Obi. But the mere fact that the Vice Presidential Candidate is coming from the South-East does not give the zone the sole right to nominate a person , since the entire country will benefit.

“When the South-East said they were not consulted before Peter Obi was nominated, where did we meet as a party to agree that the Vice Presidential Candidate must come from the South-East. But we said if the Presidential Candidate believes he has somebody to work with, we said so be it”.

He said the fact that the Vice Presidential Candidate should come from the South-East, does not foreclose the inputs of the other five geo-political zones
