Car Talk / Re: Toyota Camry 2014 Or Lexus IS 250 2010-13 by sashx(m): 12:06pm On Jan 22, 2017
bravolad:

The two cars have different target markets. The IS is a luxury model while Cary is just a family sedan. You can't also compare both cars in that Lexus IS is a RWD while Camry is a FWD. Lexus Is comes in V6 engines while the Camry has an i4 cylinder version. It's not an apple to apple comparison.

In terms of running cost, the Camry will be cheaper to run even the V6. The lexus is250 is turned towards sporty drive and will ordinarily consume more fuel than the Camry. Lexus is250 spare parts will be more expensive because is a luxury car.

On the flip side of the story, the Lexus IS250 gives you a better drive experience in terms of performance, aesthetics, comfort and prestige.

Finally, both cars are durable and reliable with a good maintenance culture. If you won't stick to the recommended engine oil and fluids as well as OEM parts, please stay away from any of those cars.

Thanks alot. That's a very insightful analyses. Thank you

Politics / Boko Haram: 276,000 Pregnancies Expected This Year In North East by sashx(m): 5:06am On Jan 19, 2017
The United Nations Population Fund estimates there could be up to 276,000 pregnancies among in 2017 among women displaced in the north east by Boko Haram crisis, and has called for urgent protection of their reproductive health and rights.

Nearly 53 out of all people internally displaced across the most affected states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa are women and girls—and 1.73 million of them are of child bearing age, the Fund said.

“Our aim is to redouble efforts to ensure that their rights to access health care is protected and the Government have all the support they need to overcome overwhelming challenges” said Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, UNFPA’s executive director.

He and women affairs minister Aisha Alhassan undertook a joint mission to the north east to advocate for the reproductive health and rights of women and girls, and to closely align UNFPA support with domestic programmes and priorities.

The Fund raised concern amidst statistics that one Nigerian woman could die every 10 minutes from pregnancy-related conditions, insisting the deaths could be prevented if women and girls have access to education and reproductive health services, including family planning.

Risk of death is heightened in humanitarian crises that displace populations and undermine community social support mechanisms, limiting access to health facilities and workers to take care of women’s and girls’ special needs, said the Fund.

It said it remained committed to “full realisation of the sexual and reproductive health and rights of all women and girls in all conditions, crises or otherwise, at all times.”

Following meetings, Kaduna, Kano and Borno governments have vowed commitment to improve the future for girls.

Kano state governor Abdullahi Ganduje pledged to initiate steps to end early marriage, legally setting the age of marriage at 18 and ensure that girls stayed in school.

Kaduna unveiled a technical brief to harness its demographic dividend from a population with eight out of 10 people aged less than 35 years.

Kaduna state governor Nasir El-Rufai, in talks with Osotimehin, said, “The decision to ignore or harness their potential will determine if the population will be a liability or an asset. By this unveiling, we have initiated steps to do the latter.”

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima, thanked UNFPA for its humanitarian assistance and committed to protecting the rights of women and girls and their access to educations and reproductive health care.

Politics / Importers To Receive Vehicles At Near Locations – Customs by sashx(m): 7:14am On Jan 18, 2017
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has said it will create bonded vehicle parks and terminals nationwide and licence major dealers to operate same and facilitate the creation of more jobs for the automobile industry.

The acting Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the service, Mr. Joseph Attah, told Daily Trust yesterday in an exclusive interview that such terminal operators will neither pay duties for the imported vehicles nor pay demurrage for a period of 28 to 30 days after manifesting the vehicles at the seaports.

He said: “Customs is going to grant licences to genuine car dealers to operate bonded car terminals. What this means is that they will not necessarily need to go to Lagos to clear vehicles.

“When a dealer imports his vehicles and he manifests them for the destination in the inland areas, the dealer will only provide some logistics and the Customs will escort them down to the terminal without paying the customs duty yet.

“Of course, there will be Custom outpost around the terminal and the vehicles will stay in the terminal between 28 and 30 days without paying the duties yet.

“If such dealer is lucky and buyers come for the vehicles, they could sell and then go to the Customs desk, pay the duty, get the genuine Customs papers and drive off without being stopped for issues,” Attah explained.

Dissecting the impact, the Customs’ spokesman said it helps the end users to buy genuine cars without going outside the borders; the car dealer will have his job strengthened by having a terminal.

The elimination of demurrages for about 30 days will translate in lower cost of buying vehicles, and ancillary services, banking, mechanic villages, vending points, and others will spring up around every bonded terminal in many parts of Nigeria to create more jobs and drive the Nigerian economy, Attah noted.

On affecting the services’ revenue generation, the Customs spokesman said the restriction of vehicles importation to the seaports will boost its revenue earnings because false declarations, smuggling and informal trade patterns typical of the old land border system will be curbed.

Mr. Attah said similar policy on rice boosted local production, disclosing that the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria team led by its national president visited the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), retired Col. Hameed Ali and appreciated the policy banning the importation of vehicles through the land borders.

He said the bonded terminal operation will also boost the collaboration of Customs, the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in unifying vehicle duty payment and registration of imported vehicles which is slated to begin by March 2017.

Business / Dangote Sets Up Truck Assembly Plant In Lagos, Creates 3,000 Jobs :vanguard by sashx(m): 8:51pm On Jan 16, 2017
Lagos –AFRICA’s richest man and foremost entrepreneur, Aliko Dangote, is setting up a $100 million vehicle assembly plant in Lagos, to tap the opportunity provided by the scarcity of forex and help tackle employment crisis in the country. The plant will be churning out heavy duty trucks on which his conglomerate, the Dangote Group spends huge amount to import for distribution of its products both locally and across the continent. Chief Corporate Communication Officer of Dangote Group, Mr. Anthony Chiejina confirmed the project, saying Dangote would be partnering a leading Chinese Company, National Heavy Duty Truck Group Company Limited, SINOTRUK to produce several thousands of trucks used mainly for haulage from its newly promoted assembly plant at Ikeja, Lagos. It was gathered that the decision to go into the truck assembly plant project was informed by the need to conserve forex in view of the current economic recession in the country. The multi-million dollars deal expected to have an assembly plant that would produce 10,000 trucks annually was signed in May 2014 in China, making it the eighth of Shandong, China (SINOTRUK), to be built abroad. According to source, the plant is 60 per cent owned by Dangote Group, trading under Dangote Industries Limited, leaving SINOTRUK with the remaining 40 per cent equity stake. Consequently, Dangote Agro Sacks Limited, which occupied the Oba-Akran Ogba premises of the former Nigerian Textile Mills, until recently, has been relocated closer to the group’s major operational hub, in Obajana, Kogi State and Ibeshe, Ogun State.

The assembly plant is expected to generate employment for an estimated 3,000 workers, when fully operational. Nigeria remains one of the most important markets for SINOTRUK, with Dangote Group operates the largest truck fleet in Africa with over 10, 000 trucks using them for the distribution of its products, like cement, sugar, flour and pasta, among others, even in its plants across the continent. According to Chiejina, the project had taken off and that when fully operational, the nation would be spared the huge forex spent in the importation of the heavy duty vehicles. He said there would be room for the expansion of the project in future to meet the national truck demand and possibly export to neighbouring countries to generate foreign exchange for the nation. Chiejina said Dangote has always believed that the current economic challenges when approached positively will make Nigeria stronger at the end of the day, pointing out that “Alhaji Aliko Dangote still believes that Nigeria is one of the best places in the world to do business.”

The automobile assembly plant is also coming ahead of another landmark project, a $17 billion, 650,000 barrels per day capacity Dangote Refinery, petrochemical and fertilizer plants located in Lagos expected, to begin operations in the next two years and creating over 300,000 direct and indirect jobs by first quarter of 2019, which would require a lot of long trucks for product distribution.

Family / 5 Things You Should Do In Your 20s So You Don’t Ruin Your 30s: Independent by sashx(m): 6:39am On Jan 16, 2017
Oh, how fun it is to be in your 20s - we’re young and free and don’t have (too many) wrinkles.

Sure, we’re the first generation to be poorer than the previous one and we’ll never own a propertyì, but we have memes. Being in your 20s is great.

But as fun as these years are, they’re also pretty important for making sure the rest of your life goes smoothly.

1. Learn to save money

When you don’t have much of it, putting a little money aside every month is hard. For some of us, faced with minimal pay and sky-high rents, it’s nigh-on impossible. But if you can put away some pennies, even just a little bit, your later self will likely thank you big time.
One older man recently revealed how much he wished he’d saved money in his 20s. He explained that when he was younger he saw his money as “an opportunity to party and ended up p*ssing most of it away.”

“That's the one decision I really wish I could go back and change,” he wrote on Reddit.

2. Look after your body

Whilst we might be able to get away with eating more pizzas in a week than anyone should and still not be obese, it is really not doing our insides any good.

Internal fat? Yeah, that’s a thing. And it could be all around your organs even if you’re skinny as a beanpole on the outside. Once your metabolism slows down, trying to break those unhealthy habits is going to be extra painful.
Of course, there are millennials amongst us who spend more money on gym memberships, chia seeds and green juices than Domino's, but a lot of them also have a massive binge-drinking sesh at the weekend, which is apparently really wreaking havoc on our bodies.

Oh, and brush your teeth. Dental work is expensive and Lord knows we won’t be able to afford that.

And you should also give up smoking and wear suncream. Adulting is hard.

3. Don’t stay with someone just because they’re there

Every failed relationship teaches you something, but regretting staying with a partner for too long is all too common amongst older generations.

Sometimes it’s hard to see when a relationship is past its best-before date from the inside, and of course breaking up is never easy, especially when society tells us being single is bad and scary, but you don’t want to look back and wish you’d focussed on yourself more.

Don’t be scared to break up with someone because you’re scared of being alone. (Single life is actually really fun.)

4. Travel the world

In our 20s, the majority of us are largely commitment-free, but the older we get the harder it becomes to just drop everything, pack a bag and jet off to the other side of the world.

Not travelling when young is one of the most common regrets of older generations, and with the transport connections of today, we really have no excuse.

Oh, except not being able to afford it. Damn lack of money always getting in the way.

5. Prioritise professional development

They say you regret the things you didn’t do more than the things you did, and no one wants to wake up one morning wishing they’d chased their dream job when they were young, energetic and dynamic enough to make a career out of it.
Plus, most people have a few different jobs before discovering what it is they really want to do with their lives. So if you don’t focus on finding what’s right for you, you’re going to have a pretty dull 40 odd years of employment ahead of you.

We must ask for promotions, educate ourselves and be willing to work hard. Then maybe one day, if you do really well, you might be able to afford a basement studio flat with no plumbing underneath a brothel. We can but dream.

Politics / Osinbajo Replaces Babachir At New Boards Committee: Dailytrust by sashx(m): 6:37am On Jan 03, 2017
By Nuruddeen M. Abdallah, Isiaka Wakili, Hamza Idris & Abbas Jimoh | Publish Date: Jan 3 2017 2:00AM

President Muhammadu Buhari has removed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawan as chairman of the presidential committee on the reconstitution of federal government boards of parastatals, agencies and commissions.

Multiple sources said Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was appointed to chair the presidential committee.

The chairman of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agencies (NDLEA) Muhammad Mustapha Abdallah was also appointed to head the secretariat of the committee at the instance of the vice president, a source said.

“The SGF is no longer in charge of that responsibility, for obvious reasons,” one of the sources said.

The Abdallah-led team now meets frequently at Wuse II, Abuja, it was learned. Another source said the committee “is working vigorously and will soon conclude its work after which it will submit its report to Mr President.”

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has recently queried the SGF over alleged fraud at the Presidential Initiative on North East (PINE).

The Senate ad-hoc committee on mounting crisis of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast had accused the SGF of several misdeeds including failing to account for N2.5 billion PINE funds. The SGF had however denied all the allegations.

In his New Year message, Buhari admitted that his “government is aware of some mistakes and wrongdoings in handling the affairs of IDPs. “We are taking measures to correct those mistakes and punish the culprits,” he said.

Buhari had in October, 2015 empowered an eight-member committee, headed by Babachir, to compile names of prospective appointees into federal government boards, parastatals and agencies.

Members of the committee included Alhaji Mai Mala Buni (northeast), Alhaji Zakari Ede (northcentral), Alhaji Inuwa Abdulkadir (northwest), Chief Hillard Etagbo Eta (south-south), Chief Pius Akinyelure (southwest), Chief Emmanuel Eneukwe (southeast) and Mr. Gideon Sammani, a senior special assistant to the president as secretary.

Daily Trust reports that following widespread complaints from various quarters on how the Babachir committee was handling the collation of names for the boards’ appointment, Buhari had in November, 2016 mandated Vice President Osinbajo to meet critical stakeholders and sort out the matter once and for all.

It was gathered that Buhari also directed that the Senate President Bukola Saraki, House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) Chairman Abdulaziz Yari, APC Governors Forum Chairman Rochas Okorocha and representatives of the governors in each of the six geopolitical zones should be part of the committee.

They were directed to review the names of the prospective appointees collated from the 36 states and FCT which was reportedly done without recourse to governors and other stakeholders of the APC. Sources said Buhari decided to handle the matter at “high level” in order to douse tension.

“The fact is that the SGF committee, to a great extent, forgot the issue at stake. They forgot that the 2015 general election was handled by members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council who should be compensated,” a source at the party’s secretariat, said.

The source lamented that most of them were “flagrantly forgotten and even sitting governors, especially in APC states were not consulted.”

In order to address the lingering issues, the Osinbajo-led committee held their first meeting on November 14, 2015 at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Thereafter, it was gathered that six geopolitical zones nominated a governor to represent them during subsequent brainstorming.

The governors reportedly nominated a representative thus: Jibrilla Bindow (northeast), Atiku Bagudu (northwest), Simon Lalong (northcentral), Rochas Okorocha (southeast), Adams Oshiomhole (south-south), and Akinwumi Ambode (southwest).

A source from Bauchi state said in one of the meetings, all the APC governors were given a slot to nominate three people to be appointed chairmen of boards and 20 others as members.

This, he said, was besides the slot given to ministers and other top APC members, in addition to those that would be selected by the president himself.

“In our state for instance, the governor had already nominated three people from the three senatorial districts for chairmanship and has also given one slot of membership to all the 20 local government areas in the state,” the source said.

But an alleged compromise by the committee was said to have prompted president Buhari to reject the first report submitted by the SGF-led committee at that time.

“Most people of the party felt that they have not been carried along. I know that many of them complain every day. They want board appointments released so that there will be calm. The people from the southeast said they have not been appointed; the people from the northeast and even from the northwest where Mr. President comes from said that they have not been appointed,” he said.

In the same vein, the wife of the president, Aisha Buhari, in a widely publicised interview with the Hausa Service of the BBC last year, said APC members who worked for her husband’s election had been neglected.

Mrs Buhari had also stated that the president had been hijacked by a cabal that did not work for his success.

On October 24, last year, state governors elected on the platform of the APC expressed their displeasure on how they were being sidelined in the choice of those being appointed from their states by President Buhari.

The governors protested to President Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at a meeting held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja. Plateau State Governor Simon Lalong confirmed this to State House after the meeting, saying Buhari had asked governors who had complaints to put them in writing while pledging to look into them.

“So, all the states that have complaints are going to put them into writing and the President promised that he is going to look into it,” the governor had told journalists at that time.

President Buhari is expected to make appointments into no fewer than 500 parastatals.

APC members from across the states are grumbling, saying most of the seats are currently occupied by PDP members appointed by ex-president Goodluck Jonathan.

The spokesman of the vice president, Laolu Akande declined comment when contacted yesterday. He simply said: "It is the president that makes appointments."

A presidential aide also told our correspondent yesterday that the last time he checked, Lawal was the one handling the issue of board appointments.

The aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he did not know why or whether the responsibility was taken away from the SGF at all.

A top government official told Daily Trust last night that the SGF’s committee on the board appointments had finished its job as dictated in the mandate setting it up and has submitted its report.

“I am not denying the protests by some individuals and groups, but the committee of the SGF has completed its assignment and the Vice President’s committee is not a replacement for the SGF’s,” the officials who insisted on not being named said.

A committee headed by Osinbajo to review the appointments into the Governing Board of agencies is not an indictment of the SGF.

How Does Ultimate Cycler Nigeria Work?

If you’re reading this article right now, I’ll assume that you’re interested in knowing how you can make money through Ultimate Cycler, right?

I’ll try and break it down in the simplest terms as possible…

Ultimate Cycler Nigeria gives you N50,000 after about a week, or even less of investing just N12,500, and if you’re not the type of person who likes to refer others, you’ve got no problem as the system would automatically fix 4 people under you who would pay you N12,500 each summing up to N50,000.

Once you register, you’re paired with someone to whom you’ll make a one-time payment of N12,500 to and your account would be activated, then you’re set to receive your own payments of N12,500 from four other people.

However, the only advantage in referring people is that it keeps the system going and it ensures that you get your profit faster.

If you register today on Ultimate Cycler Nigeria and your able to get 4 people to register today also using your referral link, then you’ll make your N50,000 in just one day.

If you don’t want to refer people, just sit back and relax and the system would automatically fix 4 people under you in about a week or two who will pay you the sum of N50,000

Introducing your friends only speeds up your collection of N50,000. If you choose to keep quiet, you’ll still get your N50,000 within a week or two through automatic pairing from around Nigeria.

There’s been lots of testimonies already, and I too am already benefitting from this scheme and I felt I should make it public too so that those interested can also start earning.

The Earlier you register, the better for you. Register Now on Ultimate Cycler Nigeria and get paid soonest!

Yes, I forgot to mention, if you’re not ready to make the initial payment of N12,500 then you shouldn’t bother to register on Ultimate Cycler Nigeria as your account would not be activated until the person you made the payment to acknowledges your payment.

If for any reason you’ve made a payment and the person you made the payment to has refused to acknowledge it, the system already has a way to handle such issues, so you have no fears as this is 100% real and secure.

In the past few days, Ultimate Cycler Nigeria has gained widespread popularity and that alone should be enough to convince you that this system really works, some even say it’s better than MMM.

Apart from the first leve l where you earn a total of N50,000

Anoda MMM? When we are still struggling to contain the number of mad people produced? And some gullible and greedy people will still fall for this. SMH

Business / Why A Strengthening Dollar Is Bad For The World Economy by sashx(m): 12:42am On Dec 11, 2016
The rise of the greenback looks like something to welcome. That is to ignore the central role the dollar plays in global finance

Dec 3rd 2016

THE world’s most important currency is flexing its muscles. In the three weeks following Donald Trump’s victory in America’s presidential elections, the dollar had one of its sharpest rises ever against a basket of rich-country peers. It is now 40% above its lows in 2011. It has strengthened relative to emerging-market currencies, too. The yuan has fallen to its lowest level against the dollar since 2008; anxious Chinese officials are said to be pondering tighter restrictions on foreign takeovers by domestic firms to stem the downward pressure. India, which has troubles of its own making (see article), has seen its currency reach an all-time low against the greenback. Other Asian currencies have plunged to depths not seen since the financial crisis of 1997-98.

The dollar has been gradually gaining strength for years. But the prompt for this latest surge is the prospect of a shift in the economic-policy mix in America. The weight of investors’ money has bet that Mr Trump will cut taxes and spend more public funds on fixing America’s crumbling infrastructure. A big fiscal boost would lead the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at a faster rate to check inflation. America’s ten-year bond yield has risen to 2.3%, from almost 1.7% on election night. Higher yields are a magnet for capital flows.

Zippier growth in the world’s largest economy sounds like something to welcome. A widely cited precedent is Ronald Reagan’s first term as president, a time of widening budget deficits and high interest rates, during which the dollar surged. That episode caused trouble abroad and this time could be more complicated still. Although America’s economy makes up a smaller share of the world economy, global financial and credit markets have exploded in size. The greenback has become more pivotal. That makes a stronger dollar more dangerous for the world and for America.

Novus ordo seclorum
America’s relative clout as a trading power has been in steady decline: the number of countries for which it is the biggest export market dropped from 44 in 1994 to 32 two decades later. But the dollar’s supremacy as a means of exchange and a store of value remains unchallenged. Some aspects of the greenback’s power are clear to see. By one estimate in 2014 a de facto dollar zone, comprising America and countries whose currencies move in line with the greenback, encompassed perhaps 60% of the world’s population and 60% of its GDP.

Other elements are less visible. The amount of dollar financing that takes place beyond America’s shores has surged in recent years. As emerging markets grow richer and hungrier for finance, so does their demand for dollars. Since the financial crisis, low interest rates in America have led pension funds to look for decent yields elsewhere. They have rushed to buy dollar-denominated bonds issued in unlikely places, such as Mozambique and Zambia, as well as those issued by biggish emerging-market firms. These issuers were all too happy to borrow in dollars at lower rates than prevailed at home. By last year this kind of dollar debt amounted to almost $10trn, a third of it in emerging markets, according to the Bank for International Settlements, a forum for central bankers.

When the dollar rises, so does the cost of servicing those debts. But the pain caused by a stronger greenback stretches well beyond its direct effect on dollar borrowers. That is because cheap offshore borrowing has in many cases caused an increased supply of local credit. Capital inflows push up local asset prices, encouraging further borrowing. Not every dollar borrowed by emerging-market firms has been used to invest; some of the money ended up in bank accounts (where it can be lent out again) or financed other firms.

A strengthening dollar sends this cycle into reverse. As the greenback rises, borrowers husband cash to service the increasing cost of their own debts. As capital flows out, asset prices fall. The upshot is that credit conditions in lots of places outside America are bound ever more tightly to the fortunes of the dollar. It is no coincidence that some of the biggest losers against the dollar recently have been currencies in countries, such as Brazil, Chile and Turkey, with lots of dollar debts.

The eye of providence
There are lurking dangers in a stronger dollar for America, too. The trade deficit will widen as a strong currency squeezes exports and sucks in imports. In the Reagan era a soaring deficit stoked protectionism. This time America starts with a big deficit and one that has already been politicised, not least by Mr Trump, who sees it as evidence that the rules of international commerce are rigged in other countries’ favour. A bigger deficit raises the chances that he act on his threats to impose steep tariffs on imports from China and Mexico in an attempt to bring trade into balance. If Mr Trump succumbs to his protectionist instincts, the consequences would be disastrous for all.

Much naturally depends on where the dollar goes from here. Many investors are sanguine. The greenback is starting to look dear against its peers. The Fed has a record of backing away from rate rises if there is trouble in emerging markets. Yet currencies often move far away from fundamental values for long periods. Nor is it obvious where investors fleeing America’s currency might run to. The euro and the yuan, the two pretenders to the dollar’s crown, have deep-seated problems of their own. The Fed, whose next rate-setting meeting comes this month, may find it harder than before to avoid tightening in an economy that is heating up.

If the dollar stays strong, might protectionist pressure be defused by co-ordinated international action? Nascent talk of a new pact to rival the Plaza Accord, an agreement in 1985 between America, Japan, Britain, France and West Germany to push the dollar down again, looks misplaced. Japan and Europe are battling low inflation and are none too keen on stronger currencies, let alone on the tighter monetary policies that would be needed to secure them (see article).

Stockmarkets in America have rallied on the prospect of stronger growth. They are being too cavalier. The global economy is weak and the dollar’s muscle will enfeeble it further.
