Politics / The President, His Chief Of Staff And Matters Arising By Aliyu Nuhu by sashx(m): 7:54am On Jul 10, 2016 |
The president President Muhammadu Buhari did not disappoint in two areas, security and fight against corruption. After that, Nigerians need food to enable them enjoy the security provided by government. This is where the problem lies. The truth is the government lacks economic direction because the president simply refused to draft the right people to show him the way. Listen to the government and you will know it has an idea about the economic problems at hand, but how to go about it is another matter altogether. Nigeria will officially enter recession if figures from statistics bureau record another consecutive zero growth in the second quota. The Chief of staff Alhaji Abba Kyari is in his late 60s, a lawyer by profession with a master's degree from Cambridge. He worked with Democrats newspaper as editor, he was commissioner for forestry and Animal resources in Borno State and worked with AIB and UBA as secretary and executive director respectively. He was recommended to the president by Mamman Daura, the power behind the scene in Aso Rock. Abba Kyari was like a PA to Mamman Daura,a trusted nephew and closest person to the president. His appointment was not on merit but trust. Since then, subsequent appointments by the president followed same pattern, the need to trust the person. As Chief of staff,Abba Kyari is without doubt the most important person in Aso Rock, after the President. He serves as buffer between the president and the rest of the members of the cabinet, including the vice President. He is technically in charge of the day to day running of the president's office because the president relies on him for almost every decision of government. With so many responsibilities woven around him, there is no way Kyari can be effective. He is chief of staff to the president ,member of economic team and member in the reconstituted NNPC board. In other words he is Nigeria's chief of confusion, to put it mildly. Role of chief of staff Generally the duties of Chief of Staff depend on who he is working with. Working with Buhari is not an easy task. He is known to be of very strong, uncompromising and unbending opinion. In practice, the Chief of Staff is supposed to assist the president to provide strategic vision and direction for the country. He is to assist the President in making key appointments of government, he is to be a peace maker that manages crisis with solutions to issues like the Niger Delta,Boko Haram, resident doctors, Nupeng and Pengassan and other perennial crisis in the economy. In short his job description is tied down to success or failure of the regime. However what we have is the resident doctors on strike and oil workers downing tools while Avengers are refusing to stop their attacks. It shows that the office the Chief of Staff is not functioning. In six months Nigeria lost about N1.0 Trillion due to resurgence of attacks on oil facilities. The problem needed not to degenerate to this level. Someone advised the president to use the Boko Haram treatment on the Avengers. If the chief of staff was up and doing, the insurgency ought not to drag for so long.Today the Southern part of the country is angry even mong the president's party men and supporters with the lopsided appointments the president has been making serially,a violation of Federal character act. The presidency is also at war with the leadership of the senate so bad that the senators are considering impeaching the president. Buhari needs to shop for a new Chief of Staff or find way of making Abba Kyari to function and reduce myriads of tension mounting on the country. America's chief of Staff The America we like to copy provides a pointer to the kind of Chief of staff we should look for. A modern, dynamic young man full of energy and resources to take the heat from the president. Denis McDonough, the Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama, is only 46 years old and a graduate of history/Spanish language . He was an aide to foreign affairs committee ,adviser to senator Tom Dascle, legislative director and senior fellow center for American progress. He was head of strategic communication and chief of staff America's Security council. To a large extent, McDonough brought his experience, youth, and dynamism to push the administration of Barack Obama to success. Nigeria's economy Nigeria is in serious economic condition, a creation of past leadership no doubt. But what worries observers is the inability of the new government to find solutions to them. The economy is not diversified and all efforts to achieve any measure of improvement has not been based on concrete and actionable plan. The revenue base of the nation has dwindled, further exacerbated by activities of Niger Delta Avengers. Workers are being owed salaries for several months, depressing markets and distressing banks. The ministries and parastatals are decadent. They swallow state and federal resources without helping growth. Yet it is the same institutions and their leadership the FG relies on to drive growth, leaving the entire private sector out of the scheme of things. The solution is well known to everyone, diversify the economy to other non oil sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, services,ICT,entertainment and tourism. Build infrastructure and improve electricity supply. These are easier said than done. The office of the Chief of Staff is the one to shop for the brains to provide a road map to achieve the goals. That has not been done. The government looks within its ranks, among ministers already burdened with their own job description, including the chief of staff,to steer the economy towards recovery and growth. Way forward The president lacks quality people that will actualize his dreams for Nigeria and the truth is time is running out on him fast. We are approaching his second year in office and so far apart from defeating Boko Haram and the ongoing fight against corruption, there not much to show. There is crisis after crisis. No single bridge built, no refinery, power plant, road, airport, university or new city. The president that promised reduction of poverty is witnessing Nigerians dying of hunger. Unemployment has never been worse amongst youths. This is a wake up call for the president to retrace his steps and push harder for results. The world is a stage where success can only be achieved if you choose your role and characters around you carefully.

Politics / Many Reason Of GEJ Being A Worse Dictator Than PMB by sashx(m): 5:50am On Jun 26, 2016 |
-Then President Jonathan sacked the President of the Appeal court because he refused to compromise on the case involving the ruling party and ruling that forensic examination be allowed on materials used for the 2011 Presidential election. Even when the NJC asked that he be reinstated, Jonathan refused yet, he is your HERO OF DEMOCRACY. - All the security details attached to then Speaker of House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal were withdrawn by the Federal Government led by Jonathan yet, you still didn't see any reason not to worship him. - For weeks in 2014, the Governor of Kano State kept shouting that security aides posted to watch over the state house were recalled as a result of orders from above, not once did you accuse Jonathan of tyranny. - For appointing Sanusi Lamido as Emir of Kano which was within the rights and powers of the Kano State Government, Jonathan ordered security agents to lay siege at the Emir's palace. For days, the Emir operated from the Kano State Government House. You didn't call Jonathan by the dictatorship that he was acting out then. - Jonathan withdrew the security details attached to then Governor Amaechi, Jonathan grounded the plane of Amaechi, Jonathan masterminded and hugely supported the division and crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Jonathan allowed his wife to govern Rivers from Abuja, Jonathan used Mbu to embarrass and harass a sitting Governor, Jonathan crippled Rivers because Amaechi was the Governor yet, you still see Jonathan as a demigod. - In this same country, we saw how Jonathan supported the destruction of the once vibrant Governors' Forum by supporting 16 against 19 yet, you see him as one decent man who should be seen as a Hero. - We have not forgotten how Jonathan used state power to prevent sitting Governors from reaching a part of the country to support the reelection of one of their own because they were in the opposition and you who is laying claim to fairness and pretending to love Democracy still claim you miss this same character. - In this same country, we saw the circulation of an undisputed video by an army officer detailing how soldiers were used to rig the election in Ekiti State to favour the thug governing the state today and yet, you see same Jonathan who was Commander in Chief of all these barbarism as decent enough to be called a hero. - In his desperation to see the Governor Nyako impeached, The Presidency under Jonathan had the accounts of Adamawa State frozen. A State Government account oh and not personal account of the Governor and not once did you condemn the action nor call Jonathan the dictator he clearly was then. - Same Jonathan you can almost worship today single handedly denied his then state Governor the right to seek the nomination of his party because he had personal grievances against him yet, you never for once accused him of abuse of power. - For the first time in our history as a country, the CBN Governor was unilaterally sacked by the President without following the due process of our law because he asked questions regarding careless stealing of the nation's money supervised and supported by Jonathan yet, you never called Jonathan the dictator he clearly was. - As far as I can remember, the only people EFCC managed to temporarily wake up from their five years slumber under Jonathan to work on were those who criticized him and as soon as they changed gear, EFCC return back to their slumber yet, not once did you accuse him of bias nor selectivity. As far as I know, Fayose is yet to deny that he received the alleged money traced to his account from Dasuki. What he is crying over is immunity and you who has never seen one million naira cash of your own is busy supporting him and shouting persecution. As you always say then, use the courts. That you now call Buhari a Dictator while you still worship Jonathan must surely be giving the devil hope that he may not actually........Stop making a fool of yourself.
