Politics / Nigeria Waves Good Bye To Flamboyance At UNGA : Dailytrust by sashx(m): 7:28am On Sep 20, 2017
By Aliyu Abdullahi | Publish Date: Sep 20 2017 2:00AM

Often times Nigerians ask the question: ``Where is the Change we were promised by the President Muhammadu Buhari in his 2015 Presidential Campaign?’’

The question is legitimate in the sense that the electorate still remains the masters while the President remains the chief servant by virtue of the fact that he occupies the highest office in the land which he holds in trust for the people.

Change manifests in several ways and this is why delegates from other countries and Nigerians resident in New York were shocked that President Muhammadu Buhari’s delegation to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is the smallest so far to accompany any Nigerian Head of state.

At the Hotel Millennium UN Plaza in New York, guests and dignitaries who thronged out in their to welcome and catch a glimpse of Nigeria’s ``Change Agent in Chief’’ on Sunday, September 17, 2017, were shocked when the President arrived in a convoy of only four vehicles as against at least 30 vehicles and outriders as has been flamboyance for which former Nigerian heads of state has been known for.

On arrival at the hotel, the first car on the convoy of President Buhari to pull up was a saloon car that conveyed him and his ADC, the second car was a black wagon bus, a third car trailed behind while the fourth vehicle had the American FBI inside.

The wagon bus had Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman, Bayo Omoboriwo, the President’s photographer, Abba Sarki, the Senior Special Assistant (Domestic), two journalists which includes Adamu Sambo of NTA and Gloria Ume-Uzoke of Channels TV, their cameramen and three Directorate of State Security Officers.

The third car had the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Munguno (Rtd.) and two of his officers. These were the 12 officials that accompanied the President from the Aso Rock villa.

Non Aso Rock delegation seen at the hotel included Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State, Deputy Governor Bala Banter of Kaduna State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of Environment, Ibrahim Usman Jibrin, and the Minister of State on Budget and National Planning, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed. Five of them were seen when the President arrived, making it a total 17 officials. This is unprecedented in the history of Nigeria when it comes to attendance to international meetings.

The small size of the President’s delegation amazed a large number of guests who lined up to receive him. One of them recalled how Reuben Abati, the spokesperson to the former Head of State, President Goodluck Johnathan had a running battle with some media houses that reported that Nigeria had up 600 delegates who were in New York for the 2013 edition of the same meeting. The figure was confirmed by the then Nigeria’s Ambassador to the US, Mr. Bashir Wali.

A national of Saudi Arabia who was at the hotel to catch a glimpse of President Buhari who wondered why Nigeria had such as small delegation had to inquire if the country was still in recession.

He was told that Nigeria is out of recession and that the small delegation was informed by the fact that the change mantra which formed the President’s campaign is being fully implemented and that the Nigerian Head of State is not only modest in his life style but is allergic to wastage in governance, just as he has plugged all the loopholes that public officials usually exploit to defraud the nation.

However, this was not the case when the President of Senegal arrived in his hotel in New York for the same meeting. A long convoy of vehicles and not less than 50 officials from that country accompanied him. Aside from the huge crowd that awaited him, there was merriment, singing and dancing. It is like Senegal has adopted the former Nigerian style.

It will be recalled that in the past international conferences served as drain pipes on the nation’s resources, especially, the foreign reserve. Government officials, including those who have no business attending such events wrote bogus proposals to justify their participation.

So much foreign exchange was spent by previous government in paying the bills of high ranking officials who simply see such outings as a jamboree. They just attend opening ceremonies and spend the remaining days of the conference frolicking and shopping for themselves, friends and families as well as attend expensive night clubs to dance away the fortune of others.

By the end of the day, scarce resources needed for welfare programs that would benefit the poor, end up in the pockets of a few who use the public funds to quench their taste for luxurious goods and services.

With a Buhari in power, Nigeria has waved a good bye to such wastes and if there is any indication that change has come, the New York outing stands out as a perfect demonstration

Politics / Firm Woos Obasanjo As Guarantor For $50bn Investment by sashx(m): 7:11pm On Apr 14, 2017
An international financial group, Money Maker Management, has approached former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, to serve as collateral to invest about $50 billion into the country’s financial, tourism and real sectors.

The team, led by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Money Maker Management, George Ghorayeb, who met with Obasanjo at his Hilltop Presidential Villa in Abeokuta, yesterday, said the credentials of the former president prompted the move to approach him for the support.

Ghorayeb said the group was targeting both private corporations and governments at all the tiers to come up with projects as low as $5m and as high as $50bn in the country, “because we strongly believe in the economy of Nigeria. It is getting good prospects, but, we need somebody in the calibre of the former President as collateral to bring in such financial assistance.

“Former President, Chief Obasanjo has fantastic credentials that we can rely upon as collateral. That is why we have come to him to see if we can get both private and government projects in real, financial and tourism sectors of the Nigerian economy, which is giving positive prospects by the day.”

The CEO who was accompanied on the visit by the vice president of the Money Maker Management, Dr. Adnan El Aridi and Chairman of RHAS Nigeria Ltd, Chief S.T Sarieddine, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the visit, assuring that the financial support the group was bringing would further enhance development and employment opportunities.

Politics / Senate Uncovers N30tr Fraud In Forex Deals: Dailytrust by sashx(m): 6:39am On Apr 14, 2017
The Senate yesterday said it has uncovered N30trillion fraud in the utilisation of Foreign Exchange (Forex), meant for importation of fuel and other products into the country.

The Senate Committee on Customs and Excise said the fraud was perpetrated between 2006 and March 2017 by importers, in connivance with commercial banks.

The committee yesterday presented documents detailing the transactions obtained from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to Managing Directors of commercial banks.

The banks were given three weeks to respond to the queries raised by the committee.

Committee chairman, Senator Hope Uzodinma (PDP, Imo) said all commercial banks were involved in the forex fraud.

He said the probe was sequel to a resolution of the Senate on the need to investigate and identify areas of revenue leakages in the entire import and export circle.

The committee said the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, have been invited for an investigative hearing on the fraud scheduled for next month. Foreign Affairs / US Secret Service On 'verge Of Collapse', Says Former Agent by sashx(m): 7:31am On Apr 09, 2017
US congressman Jason Chaffetz also says that agents are 'flat worn out'

US congressman Jason Chaffetz also says that agents are 'flat worn out' Mr Trump’s wife Melania and son Barron are currently living in New York’s Trump Tower and agents have also been required to guard his four adult children and their families.

The US leader has also requested protection detail for aides like Reince Priebus and Kellyanne Conway.

As a result, dozens of agents have been temporarily pulled off criminal investigations to serve two-week stints protecting members of the first family.

Dan Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and author of The Fight: A Secret Service Agent’s Inside Account of Security Failings and the Political Machine, told The Independent that as a result, the agency is “on the verge of catastrophic collapse based on attrition rates”. In speaking to former colleagues he said resignations occur “almost daily”.

He added that there would be less strain on resources if law enforcement agencies did not conduct parallel, duplicate investigations. It would free up the Secret Service to focus on unique cases as well as protection duties.

But he said that more money in the $1.9bn (£1.5bn) budget is not the only answer according to Mr Bongino, who pointed out that under George W Bush’s administration, the budget was far less.
But he said their duties needed to be reorganised.

“The majority of the criminal mission needs to go,” he said.

Though the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is discussing the matter, Mr Bongino said he was “not optimistic” they will make the necessary reforms.

Spokeswoman Catherine Milhoan told The New York Times that “the Secret Service remains an expeditionary law enforcement agency that continues to adapt and evolve based on the mission at hand”, maintaining that the agency would be able to do more with less.

Politics / Buhari Sets Up Committee To End Faceoff With Senate: Dailytrust by sashx(m): 11:52pm On Mar 29, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday set up a committee to resolve the perennial rift between the executive and the legislature.

The committee, chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, has as members, all ministers who were at one time federal legislators as well as the Senior Special Assistants to the President on National Assembly Matters, Ita Enang (Senate) and Samaila Kawu (House of Representatives).

The committee met behind closed doors after the federal executive council meeting amidst concern over the strained relationship between the executive and the Senate in particular.

"The executive is also concerned that the relationship between the two arms of government is not as smooth as it is supposed to be,” information minister later said in his briefing.

"In any democracy, it is a continuous struggle for balancing between the executive and the legislature because each of them is a creature of the law.

"Just today (Wednesday) at the Federal Executive Council meeting, the issue was discussed and a committee is already working on ensuring that we resolve all these outstanding issues," the minister said.

The Senate had Tuesday put off the confirmation of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission based on the refusal by the executive to remove the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, who had been rejected twice.

The upper chamber had also expressed displeasure at the refusal by the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Hameed Ali, to wear uniform.

The Senate had earlier this year called for the removal of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, following allegation of misappropriation of funds meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the northeast.
