The Obi-Datti Media Office has debunked allegations that the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, is currently on a fund-raising tour in the United States and Europe.

This followed demands by a support group of the All Progressives Congress’ candidates, Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima, asking the Independent National Electoral Commission to sanction the LP for violating electoral laws external funding for elections.

In a statement on Sunday, the Obi-Datti Media Office described the allegation as “desolate and baseless”, adding that Obi’s trip was to “sensitise and carry along Nigerians abroad on his upcoming agenda of rebuilding the country is open and transparent and not a fund raising.”

It chided the ruling party for allegedly fabricating and imagining things it (the APC) wanted INEC to act on against “structure-less and social media candidates” who had now become the ruling party’s “headache.”

The statement read, “The Obi-Datti Media Office attention has been drawn to the desolate and baseless allegation by a support group of Tinubu-Shettima calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi and his running mate, Ahmed Baba Datti, from the 2023 presidential election for allegedly violating a section of Electoral Act on Election funding.

“All of a sudden, the structure-less and social media candidates are now the headache of the ruling party that they now had to fabricate and imagine things they want the electoral Commission to act on.

“The Media office, therefore, needs to educate them that Obi and his running mate are knowledgeable duo who know the law and operate within it and who became what they are financially, politically and socially doing legitimate businesses. They have no bullion van history of questionable wealth and are ready and willing to be scrutinised.

“Just as Obi and Datti’s backgrounds and antecedents are verifiable, so also are their sources of income before and now are unambiguous and auditable.

“Obi and Datti reached where they are today in this 2023 journey giving no ‘shishi’ to anybody, because they are investing in the suffering Nigerians impoverished by the greedy leaders of the past who diverted public funds to their private and family pockets.

The Ondo State Police Command on Sunday said it recovered the corpse of a man, Gbenga Olofingboyegun, on the premises of a primary school in the Akure area of the state on Saturday.

Olofinmoyegun, who was said to be a director in the Ondo State Teaching Service Commission, went missing after he left his office on Thursday.

As his whereabouts were unknown, it was learnt that his family members and friends suspected a kidnap case and were said to be waiting for the call of his supposed abductors for ransom payment.

A source said Olofinmoyegun’s whereabouts were unknown until his decomposing body was found on the premises of a primary school in the town.

The source said Olofingboyegun’s head and some other parts of his body had been removed, raising suspicion that he was killed by suspected ritualists.

“The suit and tie he wore to the office on the day he was missing was still on him when his body was found without his head and some other part of his body,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami, said the mutilated corpse of the late director was found on Saturday in Akure, explaining that the deceased was identified by some people through the suit he wore before he went missing.

• Agency uncovers shopping malls, others owned by ex-IRT commander

The Federal Government has uncovered 14 assets, including shopping malls, residential estate, polo playground, lands and farmland belonging to a former commander, Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Kyari was said to have failed to disclose his ownership of the properties in different locations in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and Maiduguri, Borno State.

Over N207m and Є17,598 were also discovered in his various accounts in GTB, UBA and Sterling Bank.

In the fresh 24-count charges filed against Kyari by the Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, J. Sunday, dated August 30, 2022, the Attorney-General of the Federation stated that the suspended DCP allegedly disguised his ownership of some of the properties.

The case filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja, with charge number: FHC/ABJ/CR/408/22 had as co-defendants, Mohammed Kyari and Ali Kyari, who are believed to be the beleaguered policeman’s siblings.

Also, the Federal Government filed separate 24-count charges against Kyari’s former deputy, Sunday Ubua, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, who is under suspension.

An affidavit in support of the charge deposed to by a litigation officer with the Directorate of Prosecution and Legal Services, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Stephen Kashawa, explained that Kyari, who is facing trial for dealing in cocaine, was subjected to general and financial investigation when he was transferred by the police to the NDLEA headquarters on February 14, 2022 for investigation.

He added that the financial investigation which extended to his properties led to the filing of charges for non-disclosure and conversion of large sums of money.

The deponent further said the case was ready for trial and that all the witnesses were available to proceed to trial.

Abuja land

The Federal Government said Kyari knowingly failed to make full disclosure of his asset at plot no 1927 Blue Fountain Estate, Karsana, Abuja and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 35(3)(a) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, CAP N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

The prosecutor also alleged that the embattled DCP did not declare his ownership of an estate at Linda Chaulker Road, Asokoro Extension; plot no. 5 titled BO/4546; plot no. 9 titled BO/1037; plot no. 10 titled CER/4319 and plot no 33 titled BO/4319, Maiduguri, Borno State.

Furthermore, the AGF said the suspended DCP, who is facing prosecution for illegal cocaine dealing alongside six others, failed to reveal his ownership of a shopping mall titled, NE/1229 and a polo playground with plot no. 270, both located in Maiduguri.

The charges also said the former IRT commander did not make full disclosure of his ownership of farmland along Abuja-Kaduna road and a plaza under construction in Guzape, Abuja.

Count 11 read, ‘’That you, DCP Abba Kyari, male, adult and you Mohammed Kyari, male, adult, on or about February 14, 2022, in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this honourable court in order to disguise the true ownership of the property situate at plot no. 33, Bama Road, GRA Extension, Maiduguri, Borno State, covered by certificate no. BO/4319 issued by Borno State Government by deposing to a false affidavit at the Federal High Court in suit no. FHC/NG/Cs/9/2022 and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended) and punishable under section 15(3)(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, (as amended).’’

Maiduguri land

In an attempt to disguise the ownership of a plot of land covered by Certificate of Occupancy no: 000271 issued by Maiduguri Metropolitan Council, Borno State, Kyari was alleged to have also deposed to an affidavit at the Federal High Court, Maiduguri in suit number, FHC/NG/CS/9/2022, contrary to section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

The AGF equally accused Kyari of deposing to an affidavit to hide his ownership of plot no 9, BOTP/63 covered by the grant of right of occupancy no. BO/1087; a shopping mall at number 4, Aliyu Close along Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, covered by Certificate of Occupancy no. NE/1229.

The charges revealed that the DCP knowingly converted N28.4 million in his GTB account number 0121075250; N65.2m in his GTB account number 0138360064; N95 million in UBA account number 1002250112 and N16.9 million in Sterling Bank account number 0072451994.

The first defendant was similarly accused of failing to declare in the NDLEA assets declaration form the sum of Є17,598 in two GTB accounts, being proceeds of unlawful activities; N2.9 million in UBA; N366, 258.77 and N88.000 in Sterling Bank.

A Satanic Temple member who won the right to give the opening prayer at a government meeting in Alaska has prompted a protest from officials after declaring “Hail Satan”.

Iris Fontana’s invocation triggered a walkout by the mayor of Kenai Peninsula Borough, several members of the regional assembly and people in the audience.

The borough had previously restricted people from giving invocations unless they belonged to official religious organisations with an established presence on the peninsula.

It was forced to change its policy in November after the Alaska Supreme Court ruled it was unconstitutional.

Ms Fontana was one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit, along with an atheist and a Jewish woman.

During her invocation on Tuesday, she said: “Let’s cast aside our differences, to use reason, logic, science and compassion to create solutions for the greater good of our community. It is done, hail Satan.”

A man, Peter Orji, has allegedly killed his elder brother, Godwin, during an argument bordering on the payment of N1,500 electrical bill at their residence in Uruagu, in the Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the brothers were at home when they started arguing over Peter’s refusal to pay N1,500 for his monthly electrical bill on Tuesday.

As a measure to get him to pay the money, it was learnt that power supply into Peter’s flat in the house was disconnected.

A source in the community said Peter, who was angered by the development, stormed into his flat, brought out a gun and allegedly shot his brother to death.

After perpetrating the crime, the suspect reportedly rushed to the nearest police station and surrendered himself to the police to avoid being lynched by angry mob.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, however, said the suspect was arrested contrary to claims that he willingly surrendered himself to the police.

Ikenga said the wife of the suspect was first arrested at the crime scene, adding that the couple were currently in police custody.

Ikenga said the state Commissioner of Police, Echeng Echeng, had ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for discreet investigation.

The Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, has asked the commercial drivers’ unions in the state to always be security conscious in their various parks across the state.

The governor said there was a need for the drivers at parks to check the luggage of the passengers and the passengers themselves before boarding their vehicles, as part of security measures.

He gave the charge at a two-day training organised by the state Ministry of Transport in conjunction with High Point Nigeria Limited, for the executive and members of the state chapter of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, held at Oba Ile in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state, on Tuesday.

Akeredolu, who was represented at the event by his Special Adviser on Transportation, Tobi Ogunleye, said the training was to sensitise members of the association on their security and security of their passengers on the road in the light of recent security challenges in the country.

He said, “There is a need for us to have a culture of empathy. You have the right to check loads of your passengers at parks; you need to know your passengers. We want you to partner with Amotekun; we want you to be part of security and surveillance in the fight against insecurity in this state.”

The airline disclosed this via a statement, stating that the route suspension was to fit into “the current demand environment.”

The leaders of the Middle Belt communities and delegates known as the Southern and Middle Belt Alliance have endorsed the presidential ambition of the Labour Party candidate, Mr Peter Obi of Labour Party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

There was tension at the Kuje Correctional Centre, early Monday, over the death of an inmate.

It was gathered that the unrest was triggered following the death of the inmate, who was allegedly not given prompt medical attention.

Sources also noted that some inmates attempted to escape from the prison facility amidst the tension but were prevented by the warders.

Officials of the prison confirmed the death of the inmate to our correspondent. The source said, “He was sick recently and the doctors here were attending to him before he was referred to Gwagwalada specialist hospital last week Thursday. He was there till Friday before returning to the facility on Saturday. He was supposed to go for another check-up today. I don’t know exactly what ailment he was diagnosed of but I heard his blood pressure was on the high side. It was unfortunate he died.”

Another source told our correspondent that the inmate died of kidney disease.

“The inmate was sick. He died this morning. He was at the hospital last week where he was suspected to have kidney issues. That is all I can say about what you are asking me,” the source said.

A spate of animal attacks and the appearance of occult symbols in the New Forest are being investigated by police, with local residents concerned a Satanic-style cult could be to blame.

One of the rescued victims, Hafeez Olayinka, who spoke to The PUNCH, confirmed that the building had collapsed on Thursday night at about 11:30 pm, but they were only rescued in the early hours of today (Friday), and we’re taken to the hospital.

He noted that he arrived at the collapsed building on Monday to fix up some things in the building.

Olayinka said, “We’ve been trapped since Thursday night. I have been here since Monday to fix up some things in the building.

“At about 11:30 pm on Thursday, we noticed that the building was collapsing, and we tried to escape. But five of us we were rescued this morning, and they took us to the hospital.”

A global rights group, Amnesty International, has condemned the demolition of Dubaidna Durumi 3 village days after the forceful eviction of the inhabitants of the community.

The Federal Government has said that the Lekki Deep Seaport project will create 112,000 jobs to Nigerians upon its completion.

The Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Sambo, said this recently in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, while addressing journalists.
