TV/Movies / TVC News Channel Set To Launch February 2013 by SATMAN(m): 6:42pm On Feb 12, 2013 |
Continental Broadcasting Services owners and operators of TVC Entertainment and Radio Continental are set to unveil TVC News, the continent’s first 24 hours pan-African news channel. In a statement last week, CBS said the TVC News channel would look at the world through African eyes. The 24-hour pan-African news channel, according to the statement, will offer a fresh perspective on African and world events and will deliver to viewers the latest news 24 hours a day, telling the news as it is. Chief Executive Officer, CBS, Mr. Nigel Parsons, who was formerly Al Jazeera English boss, said for so long, issues concerning Africa and Africans had been overwhelmingly reported by the foreign media, which often, misrepresented the continent. “I believe that TVC News cutting-edge reporting and programming will fill an important void by serving as a voice for Africa and Africans on the street to be heard on the global scene, challenging stereotypes, correcting factual inaccuracies and re-shaping global perceptions about Africa,” Nigel added. He stated further that TVC News would provide accurate and reliable access to information about Africa and the opportunities that abound in Africa through its state-of-the-art equipment and a network of bureaux across Africa (Nairobi, Johannesburg & Accra, etc), Europe and the United States. Commenting on the readiness to begin live transmission in February, the Public Relations Manager, CBS, Mr. Celestine Umeibe, said over 350 staff had been under intensive training since September 2012, including hostile environment training. Umeibe noted that TVC News had also engaged the services of top broadcasters in the local market and a number of expatriates, Nigerians and Africans from the Diaspora. TVC News channel will feature a range of informative programming – on the arts and culture, the environment and weather reports, current affairs, business, sports, gender and health issues, and much more. It reports that TVC News has secured agreements to air on British Sky Broadcasting Group plc (BSY) in the UK, DStv in Nigeria, Multi TV in Ghana. The channel is also in talks with TopTV and DStv in South Africa, DISH Network Corp. (DISH) in the US and Wananchi Group Ltd. in Kenya. TV/Movies / The 10 Types Of People On Nigeria Twitter by SATMAN(m): 2:38am On Feb 09, 2013 |
If you spend a lot of time on Twitter, you would have bumped into one of these ten characters. You just have to. They are everywhere!! 1) The Cool Kids- Twitter is just like secondary school and in every secondary school (including public ones) there are always these cool kids who believe they are better than everyone else. They will forcefully let you know why KFC in Atlanta is better than the ones in Lagos. They wake up one morning and determine what should be said and not be said on Twitter. The cool kids on Nigerian Twitter will let you know they are better than you regular folks and that they have been around the world, twice with no visas. If a new phone or app is out, they tweet about it first and rant about it till something else pops up. They go on about how this phone is better than that phone and how they find Elegushi Beach disgusting and pedestrian. Cool kids are mean and they never hesitate to insult anyone on Twitter who they feel isn’t as fab as them. Unfortunately they have a lot of followers because just like in secondary school everyone wants to be in their cool book. 2) The Enlightened Ones- The enlightened ones are always the first to retweet a ‘breaking news’ tweet or shed more info on a particular topic whether you asked for it or not. They are never shy in letting you know they are brilliant. Some of them might even go as far as instagramming their WAEC results. They are the nerds of Twitter and no matter how hot a gadget or phone is they are quick to let you know its fault. Nothing ever pleases them. If you have a movie you are dying to watch, don’t go through their tweets, they will ruin the movie for you with their over-analysis and criticism. They see ‘Avengers’ and ‘Avatar’ as boring flicks. They find a fault in everything and everyone except themselves. They tweet too much. Most of them are really on a lot of people’s mute list. 3) Models- Now we are not talking about real models. Real models exist on Twitter. We are talking about the fake models who put up a picture of themselves on Instagram and tag it #nofilter plus forty other irrelevant tags. Throughout the day their timeline is filled with instagrammed pictures of different pouts and postures. You don’t want to know what happens when they ‘finally’ take a picture with a celeb. They won’t stop gushing about it all day. They are at every event and party. They will post it on all their social networks including Hi 5. Somehow they never put up a picture of them actually ‘modelling’ or strutting on the runway. Maybe their type of modelling isn’t mainstream yet. God knows how they can afford those big bags and expensive phones. Are you pondering what we are pondering? 4) Twitter Celebs- Twitter celebs are people who basically tweet crap from morning to night. They generate irrelevant tweets that force you to respond like “80 percent of female bankers in Nigeria are prostitutes” Therein lies the trick. Once you respond you are making them popular which undoubtedly gives them more followers. Then comes the second phase. These twitter celebs have an ‘epiphany’ on how they can use the large numbers of followers they have to make money for themselves. They suddenly morph into artiste managers/PR persons/online hype machines/guidance and relationship counselors and what have you. They can be quiet drab to follow unless they get involved in a twit fight. 5) Haters- SMH…haters are the scum of Twitter. They see nothing good in what people do. They solely exist in taking people down, famous people especially. If Genevieve has a new car they tweet about her not having a man. When Toolz conducts a new interview, they make fun about her size. When Sina Rambo drops a song they abuse him and his father. They are very bitter and insecure people whose only joy comes from insulting relevant people. Ironically they haven’t achieved anything. Some of them even beg for money to pay for their BIS which they would later end up using to insult people online. How pathetic. Technology Market / Nigerians Spent 22.3billion Minutes Talking On Phone In 2012 by SATMAN(m): 5:10pm On Feb 04, 2013 |
Nigerians reportedly spent an equivalent of 42,427 years, talking on the phone last year alone according to data provided by Price- WaterHouseCooper, a global consulting firm. In other words, the over 110 million active telecoms subscribers on GSM and CDMA networks spent a total of 22.3 billion minutes talking in 2012. According to Price- WaterHouseCooper, Nigeria’s outgoing and incoming on-net and off net calls totaled 22.3 billion minutes in 2012, while 1.8 billion text, SMS, messages were set within the same period. It was gathered that while the total call times recorded in Nigeria increased by over five billion minutes from 17 billion in 2011 to 22.3 billion at the end of 2012, SMS volumes also increased by three billion, rising from 1.5 to 1.8 billion during the same period. With telecoms operators running different disparate tariffs for on-net calls, ranging from N9 to N12, industry analysts said average tariff charge per minute of call could be conservatively pegged at N15. At such, by multiplying 22.3 billion minutes of calls made in 2012 by N10, the calls volume is conservatively valued at N223bn. A breakdown of the data from Price- WaterHouseCooper, revealed that in 2011, minutes of calls for outgoing on-net; outgoing of-net to mobile; outgoing off-net to fixed networks; outgoing off-net to international networks; outgoing calls to voicemail; outgoing inbound roaming calls hit 7.3 billion; four billion; 288 million; 315 million; 29 million and three million respectively. Correspondingly, these figures, in 2012, increased to 10.2 billion; 4.7 billion; 352 million; 403 million; 10 million and three million. On the incoming calls during the period, minutes of incoming calls from other mobile operators increased from 3.9 billion to 4.6 billion; calls from fixed operators increased from 472 million to 537 million; calls from International operators into the country moved up from 745 million to 877 million; while inbound roaming increased slightly from two million to three million. Speaking on the SMS volume, Mr. Alastair Macpherson, Quality Assurance Partner at PriceWater- HouseCooper, stated that while outgoing SMS on-net increased from 911 million from 2011 to 958 million in 2012; outgoing SMS to other mobile operators moved from 316 million to 449 million, while SMS from other mobile operators also increased from 327 million to 421 million during the same period. Though, 2012 recorded increase in minutes of successful calls between 2011 and 2012, which might be as result of improved services, National Mirror learnt that the minutes of calls had also fallen on an annual basis. Given that the deal targets just Lumia phones it won’t be on that scale. Nollywood is the name given to the Nigerian movie business, second only to India’s industry in terms of the number of titles released a year. Jason Njoku, CEO and Founder of iROKO Partners, said Nokia engineers had worked with iROKOtv to help them build the app. “Most importantly, they have helped to optimize it for Nigeria’s networks.” Mr. Njoku expected Lumia users in Nigeria, who will get the first three months access to iROKOtv’s premium service free, mainly to access the library of 5,000 movies over Wi-Fi networks, although “a lot done technically with this app to make it feasible to use on 3G.” The app will give customers extras including interviews with Nollywood stars and additional news. Outside of the Nigerian community iROKOtv is something of an unknown. Formed in 2010 by Mr. Njoku, a multiple-times failed entrepreneur living in the U.K., he had moved back in with his mother. She asked him to find some Nollywood movies to watch online. When he was unsuccessful he realized there was a huge untapped market. The company started life as a YouTube channel before launching as a company in its own right in 2010. While the company has been successful in targeting the Nigerian ex-pat community mainly in London and New York, where the company has offices, reaching African consumers has been harder he said. “2013 is Africa year. We are very focused on finding African solutions. There are more people using iROKOtv in London than there is in the whole of Nigeria. This is ridiculous.” Mr. Njoku closed an $8 million funding investment round from Tiger Global in April 2012. TV/Movies / Africamagic Viewers’ Choice Awards Nominees Announced; Voting Now Open by SATMAN(m): 2:17am On Jan 29, 2013 |
Tonight, watched by audiences in 47 African countries, the nominees for the first-ever AfricaMagic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCAs) were revealed during a special edition of lifestyle program 53 Extra. Held in association with MultiChoice, and headline sponsor Amstel Malta, the AMVCAs recognizes and rewards excellence in African film and TV. Announcing the nominees were stylish Eku Edewor and Dolopo Oni, joined by Jara co-hosts Uti Nwachukwu (Big Brother All Stars winner) and Helen Paul, Biola Alabi (M-Net Africa MD), Femi Odugbemi (AMVCA Executive Judge), Lizz Njagah (Kenyan soap and reality star) and Edem Vindah (Media and Public Affairs Manager, Nigerian Breweries PLC). Also in studio was the elegant AMVCA trophy! Encompassing 28 awards in 26 categories, the AMVCAs includes 6 categories where viewers will vote for winners and 18 more technically focused categories where winners will be selected by an expert industry based judging panel (judges will be announced at a later date). This judging panel will also select the rising star Trail Blazer of the Year, and the Industry Merit recipient, a veteran industry professional whose long term contribution will be honored. And ensuring the awards specifically recognize outstanding achievement, the AMVCAs did not name nominees in two categories (Best Documentary and Best Online Video) as the nominee selection team had preferred to award certificates of encouragement instead to all entrants. Understanding that there will be a great curiosity about the initial selection team responsible for the nominees list, tonight’s show revealed their identities. They are Allison Triegaardt, Armand-Guy de Beer, Bongiwe Selane, Deborah Odutayo, Ebou Waggeh, Eileen Sandrock, Njoki Muhoho, Phad Mutumba and Richard West. Together this expert team has an extraordinary range of experience and an impressive passion for the art of African storytelling. More info on these accomplished individuals is available at www.africamagic.tv. Joining this nominee selection team in January was the accounting firm Sizwe Ntsaluba Gobodo, who will also verify all winner results going forward. M-Net Africa MD Biola Alabi says, “We want the AMVCAs to be transparent, credible, respected and fair. So we selected people to the nominee selection team who embrace this philosophy. We will do the same when selecting the industry judging panel that will pick winners in certain categories. We know that everyone associated with these awards must be diligent and conduct themselves with integrity during what are challenging, tough processes. At this time, I must also say that we are truly delighted with the list of nominees and we wish them all well. Roll on March, we couldn’t be more excited about the big night and promise TV audiences an event to remember!” However, the focus of the night was the nominees and leading the way was South African hit Otelo Burning with 14 nominations while Nigeria’s brilliant The Mirror Boy grabbed 11, just in front of Man on Ground, another powerful Nigerian offering which garnered 9 nominations. Other titles scoring multiple nominations included Perfect Picture (, Two Brides and a Baby (7), Maami (5) and Skeem (5). In total, there were 110 nominees chosen from 43 different productions from countries as diverse as Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
