It has been made official that the 3rd industrial revolution has ended. The 4th industrial revolution has begun. We are now at the beginning of a revolution that is radically changing the way we live, work and relate to one another. The emergence of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones), mobile supercomputing, intelligent robots, self-driving cars only proves the fact that machine learning revolution has really kicked in. Gizmos of all kinds now see better than humans can, read street signs and even diagnose cancer. This era can be described as a range of new technologies that are fusing the physical, digital and biological worlds, and impacting all disciplines, economies and industries.

I came across an article that postulated that by 2021, the everyday software will be vastly more intelligent and powerful, replacing humans in more and more tasks. That’s just four years from now. How will we keep up? This is a big question that worries me when I consider the current rate of unemployment and the attitude of the youth towards work, and life generally. Particularly the youths that are in the marginalized part of Nigeria.

Although, I may not have facts to back my surmise, by being observant to our environment, and considering recent happenings, one can tell that the regular and routine jobs are in danger of being taken over by machines. Below is a chart which analyzes the impact of Artificial Intelligence in the US labour market, which in my opinion, will not be far from the case in Nigeria if there are reliable data for extrapolation.
