honeric01:ok Oga mtn or glo which one will i send to you now? Spanish Inquisition: Will Barcelona’s Squad Depth Be Exposed Without Lionel Messi, Toure Yaya & Seydou Keita? As Barca enter another busy period in their schedule, Goal.com’s KS Leong asks if a weakness will be exposed and exploited… Dec 11, 2009 2:00:03 PM Lionel Messi, Seydou Keita, Osasuna, Barcelona (Getty Images) Photo Gallery Zoom Lionel Messi, Seydou Keita, Osasuna, Barcelona (Getty Images) Related Links Teams * Barcelona Players * Seydou Keita * Lionel Andrés Messi * Yaya Touré Rest is for the weak. And that axiom could not be more pertinent for treble champions, Barcelona. The Catalan behemoths have not had a chance to draw their breath ever since a hectic pre-season schedule. They had to cram in ridiculous amounts of games into a single week and since the campaign-proper started, without fail they have had to play a game every three or four days, barring the international breaks. That, coupled with the club’s refusal to spend to strengthen the squad significantly, has exposed a few chinks in the Barca armoury. The Blaugrana have by no means suddenly become weaker, but as Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos recently highlighted, they are not as good as they were last season. Even those within the Barca circle readily admit that the team doesn’t look as sharp as they did the previous campaign. Fatigue is clearly one of the contributing factors, as was plainly evident against Xerez while the lapses of concentration were obvious against the likes of Osasuna and Rubin Kazan. Pep Gaurdiola’s brigade have also looked laborious and uninspired at times and on occasions, they just seem to be going through the motions rather than trying to spellbind their opponents. Maintaining the same group of core players and retaining a well-defined style of play brings stability and continuity, but it also makes it easier for the opposition to learn how to stop them in their tracks. This does somewhat explain why Zlatan Ibrahimovic is doing so well, as defenders are still struggling to mark him out of a game or try to wrestle with his physical presence. What Barca needed was perhaps one or two more Ibra’s, a new player who could add an extra dimension or bring in something fresh. You don’t have to be an expert to see that their squad size is also rather limited, compared to the other heavyweights in Europe. Young players like Jeffren Suarez, Jonathan dos Santos, Andreu Fontas often have to fill in the gaps in the squad whenever necessary. Others such as Dmytro ‘Txigrynskiy’ and Maxwell are still adapting to La Liga and more specifically, Barca’s style, Rafa Marquez is slowly rebuilding his confidence after a spell on the sidelines, Thierry Henry, meanwhile, is still recovering from the plague of the ‘Hand of Henry’ aftermath, Bojan Krkic is nowhere near the level he should be at, and Gaby Milito, the fighter that he is, is unlikely to be called upon for the decisive games – which is pretty much every match once the second half of the term kicks off – having just returned from nearly 600 days out on the sidelines. That leaves by and large the 11 players out on the pitch to carry the club. And there’s no certainty that those 11 warriors will be able to stay fit and healthy for the remainder of the campaign. Lionel Messi has already missed key games, and will out of action again in the coming weeks, Ibrahimovic, by his own admission, has not been able to go through an entire month without picking up some kind of niggle, Henry, you feel, appears to be stuck in second gear due to a few injury problems of his own while Andres Iniesta just looks fragile. Many would argue that he falls down too easily but he also takes some brutal knocks for a footballer his size. Barca have already shown that they can cope without Messi. As long as Xavi and ‘San Andres’ can keep on ticking like clockwork, you just sense that the cules will not miss their Messiah that much. The real question is, how much more playing time will Messi miss? The heavens have not been kind to El Mesias lately Just last month, Pep’s performers had to negotiate a tough sequence of games that included Athletic Bilbao, Inter and Real Madrid. They then had a brief reprieve against La Liga’s bottom side, Xerez, who turned out to be even tougher rivals than Inter on the night. But if Barca think that they can rest easy going into the holiday season, they are gravely mistaken. There’s no time to rest for ‘El Tricampeon’. This Saturday, they take on bitter city rivals, Espanyol, one of the only few sides who had the audacity to win at the Camp Nou last season when Barca still had something to play for. After that, they have to jet off to Abu Dhabi for the FIFA Club World Cup, and they could potentially be without Messi. The European champions are not only the highlight of the competition, but their Argentine genius is unquestionably the main drawcard. Barcelona are also heading to the Emirates to do nothing less than lift the trophy on December 19, and Guardiola could be pressured to field the 2009 Ballon d’Or winner. The majestic Argentine is currently out with a sprained ankle, but if he is rushed back, well… let’s just say we all know what happened to Cristiano Ronaldo, voodoo curse or not. That will be their last game of 2009, although some of the Catalan-born players will quickly fly back home to represent Catalonia in a friendly against Argentina on December 22. Barca will then start off 2010 against Villarreal, before having to face Sevilla three times in a space of 11 days: twice in the Copa del Rey and once in La Liga. And they will have to do this without two of their most important figures, Seydou Keita and Yaya Toure, who will be heading to Angola for the 2010 African Cup of Nations. The two holding midfielders are extremely vital for the Blaugrana, whose defence are looking shakier and shakier. If their absences are not dealt with, Guardiola could be forced to change the way the team play and function. Sergio Busquets, who is on a steep learning curve this season, will have to step in for the African duo, unless Rafa Marquez can suddenly hit a rich vein of form, or unless Joan Laporta and co. decide to make a Lassana Diarra-esque capture during the winter transfer window. Busquets is a tremendous young talent, but he is not the kind of player who can hold a team’s midfield together. And even when Yaya and Seydou return, who’s to say what condition they will be in or if Messi’s ankle will get worse. With the staggering amount of games and travel time Barcelona have to accrue this season, collectively and individually, you just have to wonder if the club’s exhaustive quest to win double trebles and sweep everything before them is starting to catch up with them. we are barca, we are like a team, so we are not one man squad with or without those players we will still retain our trophies UP FCB |
ogazi007:that is sure. Alessandro Nesta Hoping Milan Avoid Chelsea & Barcelona In Champions League Draw The Champions League Group Stage concluded on Wednesday evening and the draw for the knock-out stage is set to take place on December 18. AC Milan finished second in their group behind Real Madrid, so could face a number of the competition's strongest entrants. Without naming his preferred opponents, Milan defender Alessandro Nesta has spoken of the sides he hopes the Rossoneri will avoid in the last 16. "Barcelona and Chelsea are the strongest, I'd rather not meet them," he told Calciomercato.com. "With the others we would gladly play, even if Manchester United remains a strong side as always." hahah sorry man Barca take note Allow Ac Millan to be. |

Barcelona-Espanyol Derby, Valencia-Real Madrid Clash Declared As High Risk The Comision Antiviolencia (Antiviolence Commission) has released a statement declaring this Saturday's Barcelona derby between FC Barcelona and Espanyol as a 'High Risk' event. The match will be played at 20:00 CET in the Camp Nou and will be subject to a variety of extra measures to ensure security for the players, fans and property.
