Unbeaten in Champions League games in RussiaJordi Clos Barca's game in Kazan on Wednesday will be their fourth in Russia and their first outside of Moscow in the Champions League, where they have previously faced CSKA, Lokomotiv and Spartak and have yet to taste defeat. Since the destruction of the USSR in 1991, FC Barcelona have now visited Russia on four occasions – in the previous three they have faced CSKA, Spartak and Lokomotiv and have come away with two draws and win. 1992/93: CSKA Moscow 1- FCB,1 After struggling to overcome the Norwegian team Viking Stavanger rather more than expected, Barca travelled to Russia looking for a good result as they defended the title won at Wembley the season before. The 1-1 draw, thanks to a Begiristain goal, was decent enough, but the Russians spoilt the party in the return game at the Nou Camp beating Barca 2-3 and dumping them out of the competition. 1993/94: Spartak Moscow, 2 - FCB, 2 Two years later, Barca returned to the Russian capital to face Spartak in the third game of their Champions League group. Barca appeared to have things under control, two goals from Stoichkov and Romario leaving them 2 up with thirteen minutes to play before the hosts pulled back a couple of goals to draw the game. The result didn't affect Barca too much though and they finished top of the group. 2002/03: Lokomotiv Moscow, 1 - FCB, 3 Louis van Gaal's team were inconsistent in the domestic competition, but implacable in Europe. This was one of the 11 unbeaten European games they chalked up, beating Lokomotiv 1-3, thanks to goals from . Kluivert and Saviola(2 |
Relaxing in the hotelMarc Guillén / Vanessa Forns After the long trip to Kazan, the Barca players spent he morning relaxing in their hotel. Only a few backroom staff braved the bitter cold for a stroll round the city. Although there was a chance to train at the Kazin facilities this morning, the decision was taken, especially given the delay in yesterday's flight, to just relax in the hotel and wait till this afternoon for training at the Centralniy stadium, whose heating should ensure a perfect surface for tomorrow's game despite the cold. Free morning The team didn't get to the hotel till 23.00 last night and it was decided that the best way to acclimatise was to take the morning off. The squad were up late and had breakfast together at 10-30, after which they enjoyed the hotel facilities. Cold and snowy Some of the backroom staff opted to brave the elements and explore what is considered Russia's third city after Moscow and St Petersburg and they wer greeted by freezing temperatures and plenty of lying snow. |
I suspect a similar game to the Camp Nou”Roger Bogunyà Despite the cold, Josep Guardiola does not expect a very different game to the one played a fortnight ago at the Camp Nou. He believes there are small details to be modified in order to avoid a second defeat to Rubin Kazan. Guardiola admitted that the 2-1 defeat in Barcelona “was not a matter of luck”, but that the visitors were a great side. Guardiola is aware that the Russian champions can play very good football, and doesn’t want anybody to use the cold as an excuse. “It will be cold, that’s the way it is. We shouldn’t think about that for a moment more. The team wants to achieve big things this year, and we’ll have to play in cold grounds, on muddy pitches, against twelve men … if it’s cold here, then cold it is.” “No time for self-flagellation” Neither does Guardiola want to hear any more laments over the two points dropped in injury time in Pamplona. “What happened has happened, and we need to think about the things we did right. We have to prepare for the next game and there is no time for self-flagellation.” He also denied that the team passed the ball around too slowly on Saturday, claiming they were actually slower in this respect against Almería and Valencia. “All 19 are fit” Asked about Dani Alves’ fitness, Guardiola said that the Brazilian, who was only given the all-clear on Monday, is as ready as any of the others travelling to Kazan. “All 19 that have travelled are fit to play” he said. “Despite the injury, Alves has trained in perfect conditions”. An open group Whatever happens on Wednesday, Josep Guardiola predicts that this group will go down to the last day. “It will be tough for all four teams” he said, believing that any of the teams could qualify. “It’s a very good group” he concluded. More info Attacking with intentionJosep Guardiola only has words of praise for the Tatar outfit. “I don’t know which players will play, but they are a marvellously organised team, and very quick on the counter. We will have to be very careful about how we attack. There are very good teams in Russia, and they take their moments well, but they also push their lines forward and look for attacking plays” he said. Asked about Rubin Kazan left back Ansaldi, he admitted that FC Barcelona have had their eye on him for some time. However, at the moment “we are delighted with our two full backs” he said, referring to Abidal and Maxwell. |
Messi: "I have never played anywhere so cold" Vanessa Forns Lionel Messi has said that against Rubin Kazan, Barça will need to get over the extreme cold and play their typical football to ensure a good result. But he did admit “I have never played anywhere so cold”. The extreme cold in what is generally considered Russia’s third capital is the definite protagonist of FC Barcelona’s trip to Kazan. Although he does admit that "the Russian winter will be reflected in the game ", Messi considers that the key to victory revolves around “not thinking about it … we have to go out onto the pitch as we always do, and try to impose our style of playing and look for a good result.” "We shouldn’t think about it" This is going to be the coldest game of football the Argentinian has ever played in, but he hopes "it has no affect on the team at all … I have never played anywhere so cold. I hope it doesn’t show, and the way to do that is simply not to think about it. The important thing is to play a good game” he added. Taking chances But aside from the climatic conditions and the famous Rubin Kazan victory in the game played at the Camp Nou, Messi knows that a win is essential to get everybody "feeling a little bit more relaxed" about the situation in Group F. He also believes the players “need a bit more luck than they had in the home fixture … in Barcelona we had a great game and had much more chances to score. But we just didn’t get much luck in front of goal. Let’s hope tomorrow we get to put some of them away.” But whatever happens, he added that “this game is not a final." Rubin Kazan, a great side Asked about the squad from the Tatar city, he observed that “they are a great side … Rubin Kazan have some top quality players, they’re very fast on the counter attack and also defend well". Close stuff in the Champions League Asked whether, after losing at the Camp Nou to Rubin Kazan, Josep Guardiola’s side will be stepping into the Centralniy Stadium with a certain dose of extra energy, Messi made it clear that "we are in the Champions League, a competition where no team is inferior to any other, where everything is very close. Now the important thing is to win here, nothing more ". we must win this match oh no matter what gomy boys!!!!!!!!! |

If the pitch is OK then I’m not worried" www.fcbarcelona.cat Director of football Txiki Begiristain is convinced Barça can put on a good show despite the cold in Kazan. However, he warned that the group is difficult and the fixture pileup could also prove tricky. Txiki Begiristain spoke to reporters in Barcelona on Monday morning before boarding the plane for Russia. He expressed cautious optimism for Wednesday evening’s clash: “If the pitch is Ok then I’m not worried. I believe we are the better team and the main thing is that the players warm up thoroughly. Kazan work hard and have a good group of players. We mustn’t forget that they are champions of their country and they’ve got money to spend”. A difficult group Group F is extremely tight with Barça, Rubin Kazan and Dynamo Kiev tied on 4 points while Inter have 3. Txiki reminded reporters of what he said directly after the group draw in Monaco: “I remember perfectly how I assessed the draw. I especially emphasized the difficulty of the away matches. In all senses it’s a very balanced group. Inter and Barça were the favourites and now we have to fight to qualify in two away matches”. A good start Despite the uncertainty of the Champions League, Begiristain is satisfied with the Club’s start to the season. “We have achieved the same results as last season in the Champions League but in the league we are top with seven wins and two draws and in the Cup we lead 0-2 from the first leg. It’s only October and we’re getting excited!” Injuries and referees Barça’s director of football also referred to Dani Alves and to the referee in last weekend’s match. There was good news this morning from Club doctors who announced that Dani Alves is fit to play: “The main thing is that he makes a full recovery because it’s a long season.” However, Begiristain refused to be drawn in to criticism of the referee of the Osasuna match: “It’s not our style to complain about the referees. In addition I don’t think it would be fair for Barça or Real Madrid to do that”. we must beat them go!!!!!!!!! my boys |
