Good job ishaq. More grease to your elbow. I want to try this sack farming on a small piece of 3m * 8 m space in my compound. I have the following questions:
1) what no of rows would you advice and no of sacks per row.
2) can I mix the soil with fertilizer before filling in d sack. (If yes, ratio n fertilizer type)
3) do I need to perforate the bottom of the sack so as to reduce water content when there is excess rainfall.
4) for this small setup, do I need irrigation setup. Can't I just wet by sprinkling water.
Thanks as I await your response.

Can the alarm buzzer be replaced with a relay/contactor?
i'd be very interested in your device if it can drive a relay in addition to alarm annunciation.

Hello boss. Yes, it can be configured to suit your purpose. Just a little bit of adjustment to the circuit. It can also be wired directly from the tx unit if the distance is not much thus eliminating the use of the RX unit. Your requirement would determine what adjustment is to made.

Hi All. I have this device i designed for battery monitoring. Its called Automatic Low Battery Alarm System. It can be used to monitor battery banks remotely via your mobile phone. It is ideal for situation where you need to get alert when your battery bank is getting low and you need to recharge the batteries. It can send out sms message at a preset low bat value. E.g You want it to send alarm at 11v for a 12v system , or ....... or 176v for a 192v system.(ANY POSSIBLE VALUE AS REQUIRED BY CLIENT IS PRESET) . It will also send battery full sms alert at a preset battery full condition.

As an option, it can also send rf signal to its paired RX Unit over a distance of about 200meters. E.g from main office building where you have your inverter to the generator house/security house/utility office for prompt alert.

THE MODULE
1) TX Unit (for monitoring battery and sending SMS and RF signal)
Consist of gsm module, rf module, lcd display, calibration knob, inbuilt device battery and circuits
2) RX Unit (for receiving signal condition low battery/battery full)
Consist of led display, alarm buzzer, inbuilt battery

APPLICATION
Anywhere power outage is critical (e.g server room)

Hello,
I would like to introduce the "GSM BASED AUTOMATIC LOW BATTERY SIGNAL ALARM" system.

In certain circumstances where constant backup power is required, inverters are usually deployed. As we all know, the functionality of inverters are dependent on batteries. At a point during inverter usage, the battery low condition takes place and the inverter shuts down.
Most inverters are designed to give beeps when batteries are getting low and needs to be recharged before the inverter actually goes off. There are scenerios where you dont want this to happen even when you are not there to monitor the inverter. E.g on weekends, public holidays where you expect your SERVERs to be up 24/7 and no one is available to monitor situations; the GSM BASED AUTOMATIC LOW BATTERY SIGNAL ALARM (ALBSA) has been designed to monitor situations and send you report via gsm means of communication. The ALBSA can send you both BATTERY LOW and BATTERY FULL conditions. The system also has an alternate communication mode which is the RF.

The ALBSA consist of 2 units devices (the TX UNIT and the RX UNIT)

TX UNIT
This device consist of a gsm module, RF module (tx) , circuitry, inbuilt battery, monitoring points and lcd display. The device is pre-set to monitor battery voltages (low and high). on detection of this voltages, it sends gsm message to your mobile device informing you of the situation. subsequently, it sends RF signal (low or high) to the RX unit. The Rf signal can go as far as 200meters.

RX UNIT
This device consist of the rf module (rx), inbuilt battery and buzzer. On receiving signal from the TX unit, the buzzer alarm comes On informing you of the condition of your batteries. The RX unit can be installed at the gen house to inform the generator man to either switch ON/OFF the generator providing power to the inverter for charging its batteries. As an option, it can be configured in auto mode to power ON/OFF the gen.

As we know, most inverter manufacturers set the battery low cut off to 10.5volts per 12vdc design, it means for a 24dc inverter it cuts off at 21vdc. For 16 batteries inverter, the cut off voltage is 168vdc. With this device, we set the battery low voltage to 11volts per 12vdc. such that at that instance, you receive the gsm/rf messages, a proper measure is taken to Power ON the gen for charging. Thesame principle is applied for battery full condition at 13.8vdc.

WHO IS THIS DEVICE USEFUL FOR
All oranisation whose activities depends on constant power supply 24/7 workdays/holidays.

Its possible you and your guy both have recessive genes for tallness and this might become dominant in ALL or some of your kids. In summary, its a 50% thing. If you love him, stick to him.

I will strongly advise you to go for a 48V system. I can help you get a 48VDC to 24VDC converter for the DC load.

For the Charge controller, FM80 24V @ 80A = About 2000W for each charge controller
Thats a waste of money if you go with 24V system.
You could buy 2 x FM80 or Midnite Classic 150

Hope this helps

Thanks.
How much would that cost and what is the rating of the converter?
Suggest the solar and battery sizing. I would have loved to use trojan 6v/410 for my design but the clients doesn't want it.
So far, no one have mentioned if my calculations on sizing is the right procedure.
Thanks as I hope for more options.

Perfect, a reasonable option.
Is the pump AC or DC?
You just have to be careful with high DC currents, they are dangerous.

Your efficiencies might also well exceed 90% since there will be no power inversion.

On the side, is your client building a poultry farm?

For the lights. Its for a factory premises.

For the pump, its for production purposes. (AC pump)

Money is not the issue here.

I just want to confirm if my calculation parameters n methods are in tact.

Are the loads purchased already? if not, I suggest you go for 220v power so you can go higher on the battery voltage. It might save you some more costs.

Same for the 30HP pump. You will be able to run it on a VFD and prevent the expected starting current...

Yes the loads are existing. Both for the lamps and pump.

As a way out, I might have to split the load into 3. That way I can have 1200watts each and then size each load separately.
What do you think?
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by schneid: 9:44am On Mar 07, 2015
bodejohn:
@ Schneid, it will be near impossible to charge 38 strings of battery adequately.
It is even advisable not to go beyound 3 or 4 strings.
You will definitely need to step up that battery voltage to 48 or 96V so that the number of the strings will be reduced.
I think you were also too optimistic about the efficiency of the system. 85 or 90% will be reasonable.

On a lighter note, are you going to finance that project with a World Bank loan or is it FG sponsored? 78 batteries at 60k each will be 4.6M.

Thanks BodeJohn,
Increasing system voltage won't be possible because its a 24DC load (DC lamps)

I can adjust efficiency as u suggested.

I might have to reduce autonomy to 1.5days

I might have to increase DOD to 75%.

All these above just to reduce cost.

Hhmmmm World bank? Its not a personal project but the owner should be able to fund it.

Thanks

Here I am again [sup][/sup] my professors in the house. Am not familiar with water pumps been powered with solar. I know of grundfoss DC pumps but not the AC pumps.

My challenge.
Am to power a 30HP AC pump with solar.
30HP will give me (30 x 750) = 22500watts.
Been an inductive load , am looking at pf of 0.65. This therefore means my apparent power is 22500/0.65 = 34615.38VA.

And considering starting current which might be up to x 3. Kindly advice on this project with the following.

This system is expected to be TOTALLY off grid and running 24/7.

Inverter capacity? Brand and system DC voltage .

Solar and battery sizing?

Thanks as I await your professional suggestions.

Best Regards
Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by schneid: 8:23am On Mar 07, 2015
Top of the morning to you solar geniuses in the forum. Kindly view my sizing below and assist where possible.

Power requirement= 43200WH
At 97% efficiency/losses = 44536.08WH
Using 24DC system, AH required= 44536.08WH/24 = 1855.67AH

At 50% DOD = 3711.34AH
At 2days autonomy = 7422.68AH

Battery selection
Using 200AH batteries = 7422.68/200 = 37.11
approx 38pcs .
For 24 system (2 batteries in series) = 76pcs

Solar sizing
Power requirement = 43200WH
Assuming 5hrs of sunlight 43200WH/5 = 8640W
Using SW255w panels= 8640/255 = 33.8 = 34PCs

Solar arrangement
Strings = 2 x 24
Parallel = 17 of the strings.

Charge controller
Knowing that each panel is about 8.5A x 17 in parallel gives 137A. I want to use 2 nos of Outback FM80.

Pls kindly review my calculations and correct me before I do something crazy.

Thanks as I look forward to your professional responses.

How much is the MNSPD300 and at what points of installation is it necessary?
richmon74:
This low cost device -MNSPD300 lightning arrestor- Saved the $2500 magnum inverter below from 415V supplied by PHCN on comissioning of a new transformer.

The system below has witnessed two major hits by over voltage. This time around the Lightning Arrestor did a very good job by shutting off the inverter from the excess power supply and in the process gave up the ghost just like Jesus Christ in order to save the Inverter after struggling to cut off the excess voltage for about 45 mins. The client was so happy with the protection and called for immediate
replacement of the MNSPD300.

The remains of the MNSPD300 was given a very honourable burial as it has left behind a golden legacy for it's family. May It's Soul rest in Peace.

The story continues...

Thanks Richmon. Its good news to know I can use up to 18panels practically on 1 fm80 outback. Still waiting for the client to respond. For sure am patronising you for all my . [stuffs grin. Thanks always for your contributions here. quote author=richmon74 post=30014306]

I usually don't like commenting quickly on this kind design posts for a couple of reasons. I usually allow others to do so first while I read. One of the reasons is that I don't usually comment is the fact that the actual applications from my experiences might differ very well from the theoretical designs.

Like Barezzi and c0ogumo has calculated for you, sometimes you will see that if you want to follow the actual dos and don'ts according to the theories you won't install solar.

As a man in the field, the truth is your configuration is perfectly ok for the real life practical application. You'll be shocked that you will hardly run your battery bank (which is theoretically incomplete) down to 50% as long as you have that amount of solar panels installed. This config will run off-grid without any stress. Reason being that you'll learn and adjust your load as time goes on.

Now for the question of if you have to use one cc. Just like I said before that if you want to do all that the solar theory says you won't install solar. The manufacturers of the CCs calculates the number of panels the cc can carry by the rated current carrying capacity and that is why Barezzi said you can load up to 15 panels. But the solar standards say you should leave a head room of about 30 to 40 percent on the cc current capacity meaning if you are using an 80A cc the max load on it should be in the region of 3kw as in your design.

In actual application, I have loaded 18 255W solar panels on an Outback FM80 charge controller (theoretically wrong) on more than one installation site and it works effectively. Why? The reason is simple, it is only very few minutes in very few days of the year that the power output from the panels will hit 100% and above (as in the case of Solarworld Panels) and in such cases the cc will simply clip the excess current and no harm is done to no one. Those moments are very few that they are insignificant. For the remaining larger part of the day/year the output power will remain within the region of 80% (that's about 76A) peak which is safe for your CC operating level.

In summary, you can install up to 18 panels on FM80 should you want to cut cost as you said.

Also remember to use professional accessories for all the stages to achieve a high efficiency.

Do not also forget to buy our Professional Solar Mounts grin (page 79 of this thread)

Hope this helps someone

Satellite TV Technology / Re: Solar Energy, A Complement To FTA by schneid: 9:30pm On Jan 21, 2015
Thanks barezzi and cogumo. Just like I said the battery bank is a "fix factor" here. Doubling the batteries is a suicide mission on cost.

The most important info is the use of 2 CC which is justifiable and the max array of 15panels for one CC which i believe would be the worst case scenerio if total cost would be an issue. Though 80A would be OK for the "charging ONLY " disregarding day time usage through inverter load.

Thanks again gentlemen
