It’s been observed that online contests and academic reward programs are now springing up to shore up the little number of feasible scholarships for Nigerian University undergraduate. As usual, we had to put our sentiment aside and randomly engage a few of our audience via email to get their opinion on this development. Below are a few excerpts: Isimoya Japheth from FUTA: These programs should be encouraged because their requirements are not painstaking at all. Imagine trying to apply for a scholarship being organised by an oil magnate and they tell you to bring a letter from the Oba of your village, a reference letter from the Imam on your street, recommendation letter from your state Governor and several other impossible things. It’s just crazy, where do you expect one to get all those things from. Or is it the Oba of Lagos that said the Igbos would die in the Lagoon I will go and meet for a reference letter. It’s just absurd and I think the fact that these online contests demand so little – makes them a thing one wouldn’t mind to delve into. Tunji Aderibigbe from Kwara POLY: The thing about these contests is that, the chances of winning is quite high unlike the fundamental scholarships that have rigorous requirements. But if they could ensure they produce more beneficiaries and try to be at par with the big wigs, then I believe they would be anyone’s choice over programs that would require ‘neck-breaking documentations’. Jumoke Oladele from LASPOTECH: I think online contests should be banned because their questions are usually very difficult. It makes one feel like one didn’t go to school at all. Chidiebere Aninyem from UNILAG: I feel academic contests are cool because they are challenging and actually makes one feel more exposed to several things. I have participated in a few – although, I haven’t won any, I still remain positive ‘cos I feel privy to quite a number of new things. And another things is, they usually don’t require ridiculous documentation, mostly there is a fee involved and this is usually affordable. However, the major thing that makes academic contests unique is the fact that they don’t ostracize students based on CGPA or whatever. I mean, a student struggling with funny grade like me could just turn up lucky. We also made our own findings by sending emails to a few of these organisations that put up academic contests. Of course, we relayed some excerpts to them and gave suggestions from what was gathered from our audience and we discovered a shocking thing though. Most of these firms, if not all, are being required by the FG to seek an approval for these contests and that usually costs them close to half a million naira, and could be more in some cases. SIGH – well, now we are not surprised as to why charges are being levied. Our FG be taxing since 1600BC….SOL SOURCE: http://www.scholargrant.com/the-emergence-of-academic-contests-among-nigerian-university-undergraduates/ |
A couple of Nigerian students were interviewed on their preference over either cash disbursement or academic grant involving an arrangement with their institutions. Well, as one would imagine, the conversation got trailed by series of mixed reaction. Here are a few excerpts below: Joshua Adeleke from UNILAG: To me, I prefer cash, because looking at the way things are in the economy, unemployment rate is higher. Prices of capital items are dwindling and there are no longer stable white collar jobs one could rely on anymore. I believe if any student can exhibit an outstanding performance to win any scholarship award. Such student shouldn’t have a problem thinking of a way to build something meaningful with the appropriate capital. Its just my view from the entrepreneurial perspective. Sandra Nwala from YABATECH: Well, I think cash is better, because nowadays, a lot of families are struggling to keep up with the average standard of living and most times, we find out that these families have more than a single child in a Nigerian university. Tell me, if one of the children should win a scholarship of say N200,000 at 400level – I’m sure what the student would require to complete his/her academic pursuit in the tertiary level wouldn’t be up to N100,00. So, the balance could still be useful in helping out their siblings. Kenneth Okonkwo from FUTO: Cash is better. This is because sometimes, you would want to buy textbooks and pay for group projects at school. In this kind of situation, you don’t expect the organising body to hearken to your needs because they will think you are unserious, but it’s really hard to keep up with these things when they come calling. I feel if they can start awarding cash, even the beneficiaries can still do one or two businesses in the campus to multiply the amount they won. Tega Oshoniyi from UNILORIN: It pays to have an arrangement with the school because some students can spend this money on something not so meaningful. I mean, I could win a scholarship and take the cash to go get some clothes, shoes and bags if I want. But having an arrangement with the school helps put me in line. According to the views expressed above, one could see what the majority would rather go for. However, Tega doesn’t share the same school of thought with her colleagues from other institution. Please note that this does not reflect the views of the vast majority from their respective institutions though. Lol! Well that wasn't recorded in the bible! An actor in Mexico playing the role of Jesus during a crucifixion show on Easter Sunday fell from 4 metres above the ground after the cross was tilted by those carrying it. The actor has been dubbed El Cristo Batman (Batman Christ), Volador de Papantla (The Flyer of Papantla) and El Cristo Volador (Flying Christ) among others by users on Facebook.

Scholarships have been a wonderful tool to help students, who would not otherwise have found it easy to complete their university education, due to financial constraints. The first step for most is to apply and hope they get the scholarships. Yet, many have tried to get without success, why is this the case? And how can you guarantee your own success? 1. Begin Early Most students do not know about the undergraduate scholarships until they are in their second or even third year of school, by which time they have already lost out on scholarships they could have been getting since their first year, and they may not have the CGPA to apply. So how can you fight this? Start immediately you gain admission. 2. Maintain Good Grades Most scholarships require that you maintain a good grade of at least 3.0 or higher. So you have to study hard from your first year of school. This conditional scholarships also help you to stay focused and keep getting good grades till you graduate. 3. Apply Early Most students leave application until it is too late. Most scholarships have wide publicity, with millions applying yearly. So if you apply early, the chances that you will qualify is higher. 4. Follow -up Do you register for scholarships and then go to sleep? No. Keep checking this website regularly and stay alert to the scholarship alerts for more updates, to keep you informed about the selection process or any examinations that will be written.
