The men of the Nigeria Police Force, Imo State
Command, have arrested a total of thirty nine people
suspected to be involved in cult related activities at the
Federal Polytechnic, Nekede environs.


Speaking while parading the suspects at the Command
Headquarters in Owerri, the State Commissioner of
Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, disclosed that the suspects
were arrested at different points in the state during their
initiation ceremony.



He said that on the receipt of credible information about
the activities of the cult groups, covert operatives of the
Command were promptly mobilized and dispatched to
the area to monitor the situation. "Notable flash-points
within Nekede and environs namely, ‘South Africa ‘,
‘Shrine Tree Square’ and Pentagon Bar Umuofocha’
were surrounded and cordoned off by ever ready
operatives.


"As a result, 39 suspected cultists who converged in the
aforementioned location for initiation and other cult
activities were rounded up," he said.
The commissioner added that the suspects have made
useful statements confessing their membership of the
Aiye confraternity and after a thorough investigation, the
suspects would be charged to court.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has
rebuffed the idea that Nigerian students are unjustly
denied admission. JAMB believe that admission
procedures are done fair and square by tertiary
institutions in the country and debunked such claim of
unfairness. If a candidate scores 180 in the UTME with
5 C6 in WAEC at two sittings and another candidate
applying to the same school for the same course scores
260 and has 3 A1 and 2 B2 at one sitting, who would
admission be most certain for?

The Vice-Chancellor of the National Open University of
Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdalla Adamu, has stated that
the present management is planning to set up a Faculty
of Engineering for the university.


Speaking during a courtesy call to the new Executive
Secretary of the National Universities Commission
(NUC), Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, on Tuesday in Abuja,
the VC said that NOUN respects regulatory agencies and
will not do anything without their input and
considerations.


"We are moving from a static situation to a very active
situation; with the support we are getting from the NUC,
everything is possible.


"I am not being specific at the moment, but I will let you
know that we set up a committee to look into the
possibility of establishing a Faculty of Engineering.
"That committee has submitted its report and it will be
tendered at the next senate meeting.


"At the same time, there are challenges with courses
that require specific competences—laboratory courses,
clinical courses, engineering courses-these are courses
that require competences.’"
