However, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Dr. Folashade Yemi- Esan, stated that there was an increment in the school fees of unity schools from the original sum of N20,000.

She said the increment, which was not up to N75,000, was the boarding fee for students. Yemi-Esan said the increament was due to the economic realities in the country.

EducationWe Have Not Converted Kaduna Poly , Yabatech To Universities – FG by Schoolparrot(op): 10:15am On Aug 10, 2016
We Have Not Converted Kaduna Poly , Yabatech To Universities – FG. . The Federal Government has denied reports that it had converted Kaduna Polytechnic and Yaba College of Technology to universities. The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abubakar Abdulrasheed, who made this remark in Abuja, when he received the Executive Secretary of National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr. Masaudu Kazaure in his office, said the report was untrue.

Kazaure also revealed that dichotomy between HND and BSc holders in the civil service had been eliminated as Polytechnic graduates who acquired Post Graduate Diploma can now rise to the pinnacle of their career like their university counterparts in the Civil Service.

EducationBsc/hnd Dichotomy Has Been Abolished - Adamu, Minister Of Education. by Schoolparrot(op): 7:24pm On Aug 03, 2016
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu on August
2, confirmed the abolition of the dichotomy that
hitherto existed between the Higher National Diploma
(HND) and University degree otherwise known as B.Sc.
The Minister who announced the official position of the
government in Abuja yesterday said the stories that has
been on social media has element of mischief.
“The dichotomy between Bsc and HND has been
eliminated,” he said.

Daily Sun gathered that the National Council on
Establishments (NCE) has also given approval for the
abolition of the dichotomy.

The Minister, last month announced that the
government had concluded plans to abolish the
dichotomy that hitherto existed between these two
educational qualifications, but a reliable source in the
Ministry said the policy announcement was put on hold
pending the decision of the National Council on
Establishments and the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

“This is serious education policy that has effect on
millions of Nigerian students. So, the Minister is very
careful not to make mistake that would further
compound the issue. To this end, he (the Minister)
decided to wait for the input of all stakeholders,” the
source said.

However, some scholars have expressed mixed reaction
to the plan of the government to abolish the dichotomy.

A lecturer from the University of Abuja who pleaded said
instead of abolition, a short post-graduate program
should be developed for polytechnic graduates
to brush them up and bring them up to the level of the
University graduates.

“Why would you want to abolish the dichotomy and put
both qualifications side by side when the entry
requirements for university is higher than that of
polytechnics. For instance, there are specific number of
Professors and P.hD holders required in a particular
faculty in a university, unlike in the polytechnics, where,
in some cases, you discover that it is university
graduates that are teaching the students,” he said.

The president of the Academic Staff of Nigerian
Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi also
opposed the abolish the dichotomy.

“The tenacity of these two qualifications is tested at the
work place. People have been saying that there is no
disparity between HND and Degree certificate but I
don’t see how both graduates can match each other
especially at the level of work place. Dr. Femi
Olufumilade, Head of Political Science Department,
Igbinedion University, Okada said the decision ought to
have taken place long ago.

“Nevertheless, it is a good development in our education
system because the disparity has created a huge
psychological gap between the graduates of
Polythecnics and University,” he said.

Prof. Ifeoma Nwoye of the Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida
(IBB) University, Lapai, Niger State also endorsed
government. She argued that polythecnic
education system failed woefully in achieving its
objective of raising skilled technical manpower.

“Even the Britain where we copied the polythecnic
education system from has abolished and now run a
single university system. So, there is nothing bad about
the decision,” she said.

She, however, called for a total overhaul of the tertiary
education curriculum.
A lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Dr. Peter
Ogah said , “ It has little or no negative implication. We
welcome it even though I graduated from University. Let
us support it” he said.

She accused the of double standard for giving due
recognition to HND holders, saying that the
discrimination is obvious in government employment,
where HND holders are placed below degree Degree
holders.

A Professor of Education in Ebonyi State University,
Sunday Agwu asked the government, in implementing
such decision to consider admission requirements,
qualifications for lectuerers as well as curricular.

EducationFEC Approves The Scrapping Of HND Certificate by Schoolparrot(op): 9:29am On Aug 03, 2016
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the scrapping of the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by polytechnics in the country. Thus, the Federal Government has restricted the award to only the students currently on admission for the various programmes country in a move the Minister of Education; Dr Adamu Adamu stated forms part of the comprehensive reform of the tertiary education sector.

This is just as the Federal Government is set to scrap programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based.

According to the minister, under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities’ Councils.

Adamu stated that with the new arrangement, polytechnics will now be limited to an award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

He stated that two most polytechnics – Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic, will change their nomenclature as they would now be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.

And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law.

He, however, added that states that are interested could borrow the FG’s model, “But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education.”

EducationWao! 1st Northern Female SUG President After 30 Years (pictured) by Schoolparrot(op):
Amina Yahaya Becomes 1st Northern Female SUG
President After 30 Years

A northern Nigerian female for the first time broke the
jinx of being a student union leader in the region. The
student Amina Yahaya, a 400 level English student at
the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto became the
leader of the university’s student union, a position
usually taken by males.

The first female student to ever hold the position in the
northern region 30 years ago is Najatu Mohammad, the
wife of late Bala Mohammad – a political adviser to
Abubakar Rimi, a second republic governorof Kano
State.

In an interview with the BBC Hausa service, the new
Student Union Government (SUG) president said her
greatest challenge has been getting the support of
fellow females. She described the female folks as their
own enemies.

“When it comes to leadership issues we (women) are
own enemies,” Yahaya said. “We don’t support one
another mostly because some of us assume that‘
women are arrogant’ so I won’t support her. When I
came to this university, there was only one female
professor in my department.“ She’s been my role
model,” she said.

Yahaya was formerly the vice president of the school’s
student union before the impeachment of its leader.
She took over the office of the student union president
from Faruk Sai’d after a vote of no confidence was
passed on him by the legislative arm of the students’
assembly.

He was alleged the union’s constitution by withdrawing
N200,000 from the union’s account without appropriate
approval. Yahaya also said that her ambition has
always being to be involved in national politics.
