The Association of Educational Services and Cyber Café
Operators (AESCCO) has written to the Senate protesting
the policy by JAMB that Cyber cafe operators will not be
allowed to register candidates for the 2017 UTME. According to the letter which was Dated 6 March and signed Mr. Femi Aborisade, lawyer to AESCCO, the policy, announced by JAMB on its website, is discrimination against cyber cafés run by small and medium scale owners in favour of JAMB-accredited CBT centres owned by big- time businessmen. “UTME applicants should be allowed to register for the examination from their individual computer units and/or those owned by their parents and guardians rather than be compelled to patronize CBT centres. Where some individual applicants do not have their own computer units, such applicants should be allowed to exercise the freedom to patronize either a CBT centre or the cyber cafés.” The letter stated. While admitting that small scale cyber café owners may be involved in examination-related fraud, AESCCO argued that owners of big CBT centres are not exactly free of such dubious tendencies. “If institutions of learning can conduct online registration for admission by applicants anywhere in the world, without limiting applicants to CBT centres, what is the peculiar difficulty of JAMB? If WAEC and NECO can successfully conduct registration for their examinations online without experiencing duplication and/or swapping of applicants’ data, why should the approach of JAMB be different,” asked AESCCO. The body maintained that if this development is allowed, it will increase the current unemployment rate in Nigeria and asked the Nigerian Senate to take measures, including adopting a resolution to compel JAMB to execute its functions in line with constitutionally guaranteed rights. www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2017/03/utme-registration-cyber-cafe-owners.html ccc:lalasticlala

The former Speaker, House of Representatives, Dimeji
Bankole, has expresed his dissatification at Joint
admissions and matriculation board (JAMB) for fixing
the cut-off mark for Colleges of education at 130. He
therefore urged the body to increase the mark. He said, “At present, to gain admission into universities and polytechnics, students must achieve pass marks at or above the cut-off points of 160-180. “On the same scale of measurement, the cut-off point for admission to a college of education is 130. This means that the system is pre-disposed to select poorer academic performers to train as teachers for our children.” “If we are selecting poorer academic performers to train and teach our students, how can we expect our students to be high achievers, if all through their formative academic years, they are separated from the brightest minds and not forced to push themselves past the standards and achievements of individuals who are unable to gain admission into university? “This is no joking matter. Our colleges of education should have the highest cut-off points, attract the smartest students, because they matter too much for the future of this country.” www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/10/cut-off-mark-at-130-is-absurd-for.html Stay updated with all STUDENTS News plus other Nigeria Education news; Always visit www.SchoolParrot.com.ng

ASUU threatens to go on strike over unpaid allowances. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike to press home its demands for the implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government. It should be recalled that this is not the first time the body has embarked on a strike for exactly the same reason. Prof Olusoji Sowande, the ASUU Lagos zone coordinator, revealed the plans for a strike at a news conference on Tuesday, August 30 in Lagos. Prof Sowande while speaking said that the union was planning to go on another strike after several efforts to ensure that the government address the pending demands, proved abortive. He stated that the 2009 agreement between the federal government and ASUU, Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on funding of state universities, breaches of the conditions of service and re -negotiation of the agreement, were all still pending till date. Other demands he mentioned include: the exclusion of Nigerian universities from Pension Management Company, non-release of NEEDS Assessment Intervention Fund, funding of state universities, earned academic allowance and renegotiation of the agreement. He explained that the union had embarked on strike in 2012 and 2013 as part of the efforts to make the government implement the agreement, yet up till date the issues remained unresolved. He also said that the 2009 agreement provided for a periodic review after every three years which had not been done. ww.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/08/ASUU-threatens-to-embark-on-nationwide.html?m=1 Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) approved academic calendar for returning students released – 2016/2017 Full Details >>> www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/08/ahmadu-bello-university-abu-approved.html?m=1 Breaking News @ SchoolParrot.com.ng SchoolParrot Nigeria.
