source: www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/08/waec-withheld-results-of-137295-ssce.html?m=1 The West African Examinations Council , WAEC has withheld the results of 137,295 candidates, representing 9.74 percent of candidates who wrote the 2016 SSCE, for further investigation in connection with various cases of examination malpractice. According to the Head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Mr. Isaac Adenipekun, the reports of the investigations will be presented to the Nigeria Examinations Committee (NEC) of the Council for consideration. He said the Committee’s decisions will be communicated to the affected candidates in due course. Announcing the release of the results, Mr. Adenipekun, said there was a significant improvement in the performance of candidates when compared with last year's results. He attributed the improvement to better commitment on the side of the students, teachers and governments at all levels. Adenipekun however warned that individual candidates or some state governments that were still indebted to the council may not have access to the council’s website for their results. Candidates that participated in the examination are advised to check their result by following the details outlined on the link below; www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/08/mayjune-waec-result-checker-2016-is-out.html?m=1 Stay updated with all STUDENTS News plus other Nigeria Education news; Always visit www.SchoolParrot.com.ng Share this. www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/08/scholars-kick-against-change-of.html?m=1 Lecturers from the University of Lagos, UNILAG have kicked against the federal government's directive to scrap the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by polytechnics in the country. The lecturers claimed that the move would result in more unemployments for polytechnic lecturers. The Federal Government had given a directive that Polytechnics should upgrade to campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of the upgraded universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities’ Councils. Acting Head, Mass Communication Department, UNILAG, Dr. Oluruntola Sunday, said that the move by Federal Ministry of Education will not augur well as certain machineries ought to have been put in place before declaring the outright scrapping of HND by polytechnics. Prof Sunday noted that since most lecturers in polytechnics have to upgrade their degrees to a higher level so as to enable them fit into the university system, many lecturers may lose their jobs due to constraints of time, age , finance and even unfavourable structures. “Although, in terms of financial benefits, polytechnic lecturers earn more than their universities counterpart. But, both qualifications and expectations as regard lecturing differ. So, for government to declare change of the status quo of the polytechnics; they have to put things in place. For example, the consideration for lecturers in polytechnics to upgrade their degrees to varsity equivalent will and need to arise. “ If this arise, the implication is that some lecturers may lose their jobs due to certain constraint that has to do with their age, experience, time , finance and the issue of automatic change from what they were used to. The question is, what machineries are put in place to effect this change in policy? Also, a senior lecturer from Mass Communication department, Dr. Tayo Poopola lamented that the constant change of policies without getting people's opinions has been the bane in the education sector. Dr Poopola said that Nigeria, who operate a democratic rule, ought to set agenda for public discussion before declaring a new policy. “ This is a democratic era and in democracy, there is the Agenda Setting model. Government should set the agenda for public discussion. Let them get the views of members of the public. And take proactive steps that will be in the interest of the public,'' he said. ''The era of somebody arrogating wisdom to formulating of policy that backfires is not good. This has been the bane of Nigeria's education system. Before now, we had the 6-3-3-4 system which was scrapped. They brought 9-5-4. So, where are we going? This kind of policy changes in the education sector without due consultation is not good for national development,” he concluded. Its National President, Comrade Usman Dutse, a lecturer in the Department of General Studies, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, made this known in an interview on Wednesday. “At the last meeting of the council on establishment a memo was presented by the minister of education demanding the removal of the dichotomy placed on HND and B.Sc graduates. “The minister said the reason dichotomy was placed ab initio, has now been overtaken by events. “And now if you look at the environment and the situation that we have in the country at the moment, you would see that the abolition of the dichotomy is long overdue. “One of the major reasons the meeting and other stakeholders gave for the abolition of the dichotomy is the hitherto different entry requirements into both the university and polytechnic. “Now the requirements have been harmonised. There was also the issue of curriculum, which was not wide. “The issue of dichotomy was demoralizing to polytechnic graduates. “We have a lot of HND graduates in the civil service and they have contributed a lot, but that dichotomy is killing their morale because they feel that their qualification is not being appreciated. “Now it has been discovered that performance at work is not based on the certificate that people have or where you come from, but on the skills and the ability you have. “Experience has shown that there are a lot of HND holders that perform better than some degree holders.’’ Dutse noted that the dichotomy had created a flawed mindset among parents and employers that university degrees were more prestigious than higher national diplomas. “The dichotomy even made people to give preference to university education at the expense of polytechnic education because if you look at the patters of application for admission to tertiary institutions every year, you will see that applicants keep applying more to the universities. “In the last admission, 1.6 million applicants applied to the universities, but only 38,000 applied to the polytechnics, while only 29,000 applied to collages of education. “And the major reason for all that was this dichotomy thing. “Out of the 1.6 million people that applied to the universities, only 300,000 were admitted. “It means that 1.3 million applicants would not be offered admission. “So, dichotomy has denied people polytechnic education, but with the abolition of that dichotomy now, the tide will change a little especially with the Federal Government now talking about diversifying the economy. “I believe that the diversification process will lay a lot of emphasis on technical and vocational education and that is where polytechnic education is strongest.’’ Source: Vanguard Stay updated with all STUDENTS News plus other Nigeria Education news; Always visit www.SchoolParrot.com.ng SchoolParrot Nigeria Team! www.schoolparrot.com.ng/2016/08/asup-hnd- holders-perform-better-than.html?m=1 |

The dismissal of Prof Dibu Ojerinde as the JAMB Registrar along side 16 other Chief Executives of some parastatals and agencies in the Ministry of Education came as a surprise to many. Though the Ministry of Education did not make known the reasons behind the sack, however, going by the gross irregularities that marred the conduct of the last UTME and the ongoing 2016 admission process, the reason for the sack of the former JAMB boss whose tenure was suppose to end April 2017 may not be far- fetched.
