NIGERIAN MUSIC REALITY TV SHOWS ARE NOTHING BUT CREATIVITY KILLING SHOWS!!!

Some few years back, many positive minded Nigerians would have predicted that the advent of musical reality TV shows in Nigeria such as Project Fame, Nigerian Idol, Peak Talent Show, Lukozade Freestyle, Star Quest and even the so called Naija Sings would bring many upcoming and underprivileged Nigerian artistes to quick stardom. Some intelligent social analysts might have even expected a great and rapid improvement in the Nigerian music industry in terms of creativity, originality and professionalism. But contrary to all what the well meaning Nigerians might have expected, none of the so called eventful musical reality TV shows has been able to live up to the standard in which it was established.

For clarity, I shall limit the scope of my criticism to four key aspects of the competition which are: the concept, the screening process, the judges and the result.

THE CONCEPT

It is no longer news that majority of the Nigerian musical reality TV shows are not founded on indigenous or homemade ideas, though some may sound Nigerian. Majority of them (if not all) are brought to Nigeria on foreign franchise. Judging from this, it is important for the Nigerian upcoming artistes to be aware that the idea behind these shows is not to make them whom they are or whom they dream to become but to be whom the producer of the idea wants them to be. Whenever I sit to watch any of the Nigerian musical reality shows, I do not see Nigerian mega star artistes in the making, rather I see the likes of Celine Deion, Lionel Richie, Michael Bolton, R Kelly, the late Witney Huston and the Legendary Michael Jackson in black skin. At almost every instance of the show, I am tempted to ask myself why Nigerians have to sound foreign in their country before they could be heard. Why must I sound exactly like Michael Jackson before you know I am the next Nigerian Super Star artiste?

No doubt, the basis of this idea of clothing the Nigerian upcoming artiste in borrowed robes is as a result of the concept behind the shows. And if care is not taken, my fear is that we may be unconsciously and foolishly dragged to the era of oversaturation of foreign music in the Nigerian music industry which would eventually pull many successful locally groomed Nigerian star artistes to the foreign musical industry (just as it is already evident in the official signing of some Nigerian Star artistes by some big time recording labels in America). Though many Nigerians will see the recording deal as a form of global partnership, I see it as a conscious effort by the Americans to repossess the Nigerian (the most populated black nation) music industry.

THE SCREENING PROCESS

Here, I think we need to be more realistic and practical. Have you ever imagined what would be the reaction of any of the judges of the Nigerian musical reality TV shows when encountered with the likes of D’banj (with one of his old tracks Tongolo), Wired Mc (with her famous Ijo ya), Dj Zeez (with his hit track Foka sibe), 2face (with his well known Only me), Timaya (with his debut Kalangolo) during auditioning? I am very sure that you will agree with me that they would all be sent out; considering the fact that they would not be allowed to sing with any readymade beat except for the use of some musical instruments such as mouth organ, trumpet and the guitar (and that is only allowed in rare cases).

Now, if the so called Nigerian Super artistes could not have made it to the competition, how much more the helpless upcoming artistes. This leaves me to think about how many 2face Idibia, D’banj, Timaya, Wierd Mc we might have lost in the Nigerian musical industry. If truly these shows were to discover talents and push them to stardom, I see no reasons why the organisers or the producers shouldn’t have found a better means of screening the contestants other than the traditional system. I suggest that they fix some appointments with good entertainment consultants for a more comprehensive, intensive and result oriented screening system.

Apart from that, other crucial factors that are to be considered before organising any screening/auditioning for a musical reality TV show are the congestion of participants, the psychological effects it has on their performance during the auditioning and the time factor. In most cases, regarding the time factor, it is observed that the judges attend to the first batch of contestants better than the other batches because of time constraints and stress factor. A closer look at all these factors will help to show the influence they have on the judges’ decisions and the participants’ perception.

THE JUDGES

Before considering who judges any of the musical reality TV shows in Nigeria, I think there are some factors that the organisers of the shows have to consider. These are: the integrity of the panelists, their industry credibility (this entails their technicality and professionalism in the Nigerian music industry) and their ability to prove themselves as worthy role models for the contestants to emulate. From what we have on ground in the Nigeria musical reality shows, one can count only few decision makers (one or two) who comply with the basic requirements mentioned above. Then, I begin to wonder how the likes of Charley Boy (Area Father), Daddy Presh, Wierd Mc, Alariwo, and many others find their way to some of the decision making panel of the Nigerian musical reality shows.

To be candid, we need to ask ourselves what any of the above mentioned personalities have done to the development of the Nigerian music industry. As far as I am concerned, I think Charley Boy would have been a better judge for a competition organised for the Okada riders (commercial motorcyclists) instead of being a judges in one of the Nigerian musical reality shows. From his physical appearance (body piercing et al) to his contribution to the growth of the Nigerian music industry, I think Charley Boy is a good example of who a judge ought not to be. I can never allow my kids to sit and watch any programme that has such personality as a judge, let alone giving them the chance to participate in such competitions. I don’t have any personal dislike for Charley Boy or any other persons mentioned; I respect them all as individuals having the freedom to express themselves in their own special way but I feel the idea of morality that is needed to be impacted to the upcoming artistes cannot be conveyed through such ambassadors.

Another striking issue about the system of judging in the Nigerian musical reality show is the derogatory and demoralising comments that are uttered from the so called judges. In fact, it is very obvious that most of the judges are careless and irrational in the way they handle their comments after assessing the performance of the contestants. I suggest that proper psychological and sociological trainings should be conducted for the judges before sitting on the panel. Have you ever imagined the number of upcoming artistes that would have changed their musical career as a result of the ‘get away!’, ‘shut up!’, ‘fly out now!’, ‘Nonesense!’, ‘No way!’ etc. that they get from the judges of the Nigerian musical reality TV shows? Think about the vision, creativity, ambition and upcoming talent that must have been murdered by the judges of our so called celebrated musical reality TV shows. By now, I am sure you will understand why I tag them as creativity killing TV shows.

THE RESULT

It is never in my intention to dig deep on this section; rather, I intend to make you the judge. My idea of result is not the immediate end product of the judges, it is not the announcement of the winners but it is what happens next after the result of the winners has been announced, it is the actual solution to the problems that the organizers of the shows claim to solve.

On this note, one is tempted to ask these few questions: how many upcoming artistes have they transformed to reigning celebrities so far? Are there follow up measures in place for the underprivileged contestants? Are there career orientation schemes provided for any of the participants? What kind of winners do the organisers of the shows finally produce (You may have to take a clue from their concepts)? All these and many more are what I would want you to provide answers to after carefully watching any of the Nigerian musical reality TV shows.

N.B.: This article is never meant to ridicule or castigate anyone or any organisation mentioned above, it is meant to analyze the social significance and effects of certain aspects of the popular Nigerian musical reality TV shows, the writer sees this piece as an attempt to revolutionalize the concept of most Nigerian entertainment producers.

DB Records owner and pop artiste D’Banj is desperately trying to reconcile with his former Mo’ Hits partner Don Jazzy. In a bid to get his former maverick producer back, D’Banj asked Kanye West to talk to Don Jazzy. A few months ago the rap superstar called Don Jazzy to try and get the two Mo’ Hits owners to forget the past and work again. Our source who is close to both D’Banj and Don Jazzy confirmed this to be true and says that D’Banj’s attempt to get Don Jazzy back has been going on for sometime. Click to continue reading…

Our news story also coincides with Kanye West, Don Jazzy and D’Banj story in today’s edition of City People. According to the magazine, “Kanye West, believed to be at the center of the controversy that led to their fight is making efforts to reconcile them…Kanye West was not aware of the fight between D’Banj and Don Jazzy until 3 months ago and has been trying to get them together.”

The City People story goes on to say that “while he was in the studio with D’Banj some weeks back working on the remix of “Scapegoat” Kanye West brought the topic up again and asked D’banj why Don Jazzy was not in the US with him working on the song. D’Banj was said to have told him that they are still friends but work on different platforms now. Again, Kanye is not happy about the fact that his name was on the internet as one of the reasons the duo fell apart. He insists they get back together if he has to keep working him. He prompted D’Banj to once again try and make up with Don Jazzy.

“Recently D’Banj invited Kanye West to come to Nigeria for the video shoot of “Scape Goat” remix he did with him. He accepted but gave a strict condition that he will come only after he has reconciled with Don Jazzy who must also be in the video.”
According to the City People story, after several attempts by D’Banj, Don Jazzy agreed to appear in the video on a condition that he gets paid for his appearance.

I see Obey as a Juju musician who's very witty and thoughtful with his lyrical composition while King Sunny Ade is more of an entertainer. KSA controls the stage but chants some incantations...this makes some religious minded peeps feel his music could be fetish (I'm kindof indifferent about this). Obey on the other hand is more of a legendary Yoruba philosophical musician. His kind are rare.
In all, I think I would go for Obey, though my opinion can't wear him a crown.

In most cases, too much experience hinders creativity. It inspires complexity in nonentity. Those who truly think outside of the box are people with ordinary mind, with little or no experience and are ready to approach anything with simplicity. What if you never knew anybody like Davido or Psquare and you are meant to talk about music in terms of its genre or lyrics. Forget about personality or relationship with any of these artistes, until then you will not enjoy music at all. Music as they say is a universal language; it is no man's property. Even the profs of music can't claim they know everything about it. I have never met any of those artistes before and do not prefer one to the other. I love music. @kulyi @
Odizzy thanks for your understanding. Life will be better if we start living it with clear mind.

The problem with many folks nowadays is that they don't read. Davido and Psquare are regarded as Nigerian musicians-not minding the age or number of fans. If you are a fan of Psquare, that doen't mean Davido does not exist. Read and read smartly before you post any comments next time pls.

MUSIC IS MIRROR: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DAVIDO’S EKURO AND PSQUARE’S ONYINYE
(Who sabi do love pass: an Igbo man or a Yoruba man?)

After carefully listening to Davido’s Ekuro and Psquare’s Onyinye, I decided to do a comparative analysis of the two love songs. To be sincere, I really had a nice time playing these beautiful songs…I tell you, I can always play them forever in my memory. Besides, I have even copied a lot of lines that I could use to woo any Nigerian lady that comes my way anytime from now. So, ladies, BEWARE!

Indeed, I have learnt a lot from these two Nigerian super star artistes. I have learnt that music could be used to reflect people’s character, interest, culture, values and perception of life in general.

My analysis in this write-up however seeks to explore the perception of the Yorubas and the Igbos (two out of the three major tribes in Nigeria) towards expressing their love for a beautiful lady. I hope you will find this analysis insightful and entertaining.

You may want to sip a coffee as you listen to these songs before I continue my analysis?

Ekuro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxgYPz-sTc4

Onyinye: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lY2H2ZP56K4

Song Title: Ekuro (the radicle of a bean seed)

Ekuro

My analysis of this song starts from the title. For a start, one could be tempted to conclude that the title of the song is absurd and irrelevant to the theme of love expressed by the singer. I suggest that a closer look at the meaning of the Yoruba word Ekuro in relation to the theme of love should help here. As stated above, Ekuro is the essential part of a bean seed that sticks with the seed from its germination till harvest. Even when we cook and eat a bean seed, the ekuro (radicle) is eaten with the seed. When the seed germinates, the cotyledons become two embryonic leaves, the radicle grows into the embryonic root and the plumule develops into the shoot. I know I am already taking you deep into some boring stuffs. Never mind, the beauty of the title of this song can be seen from the everlasting union and bond between a bean seed and its radicle.

The Intro
Mr Cheeto on the beat e
Davido

This is very typical of many Yoruba artistes. They believe in name calling, not for fun but for some kind of respect or media recognition. This is clearly reflected in the lyrics of most Yoruba Fuji musicians. They are fond of repeating their names and mentioning the names of their producers, promoters, marketers, record label, makeup artistes, landlords, in-laws, family members, girlfriends, etc (please, permit my laughter)

The Chorus
Ekuro la labaku ewa (a bean seed and its radicle arinseparable)
Bojo ro (in rain)
Bo orun ran (in sunshine) 4x

I’m sure that the chorus needs no more explanation. You may scroll up if you think you need more explanation on this.

The First Verse
When I look into your eyes
You’re a blessing in disguise
Eh, you make me wanna do the ring-around the roses

Hey! Come-on! That is too sharp for a lady. No introduction, no greetings, not even a ‘hi5’. Haba! This shows the unusual confidence that some Yoruba guys could put up when wooing a lady. Some of them are too raw (lacking courtesy) while some could be very smart with it that most ladies won’t notice. One funny thing about this song is that the singer makes us to know the man on the beat at the beginning of the song but fails to say anything about the lady he loves. I mean the lady that is meant to be the subject of the whole song. Who knows, trust a Yoruba man, it may be intentional; it may be the fear of insecurity he thinks he would get from the world of babes curling around him. A correct Yoruba man always enjoys having them around as long as the money is there. What else do you even expect from the Omo Baba Olowo (The son a wealthy Yoruba man)?

And I love the way you smile
While I give it to you nice

Trust Yoruba babes, they don’t carry last. They can fake smile…but I keep wondering what the guy could have given her to make her smile. Do you want to guess?

I hold your hands
And everybody wants to hold you

How come? I am very sure it couldn’t have been just a hand shake. Trust Yoruba guys na, he must have squeezed some money into her hand, such that would make her friends plead for a share.

When I am with you
You give me these sorts of feeling in my heart

What feeling please? Yoruba guys! They can lie en! Feelings to have sex or what? Say the truth and let the coward be ashamed. This reminds me of the saying that whenever a Yoruba guy is alone in the room with a beautiful lady, there is always a devil in their midst…

When I see you
You give me these thoughts of tingle in my heart

Tingle what?

When I am with you
You give me these sorts of single in my heart
When I see you
You give me these thoughts of tingle in my soul

Did I hear you say single or tingle? What the heck! Yoruba men can say anything to win a lady’s heart; not minding the meaning, all they want to achieve could just be some crazy rhyme.

The Second Verse

When I need to love
It’s you that I am loving
When I need a hug
It’s you that I am hugging
When I need a kiss
It’s your lips that I am kissing
When I need to breathe
It’s your air that I am breathing

Hmmm! Here is where the beauty of the song lies. The closeness, the togetherness, the perpetual commitment of love is clearly expressed here. No sane woman would hear this from a guy and still resist his proposal. I trust some Yoruba women; many of them are very emotional. They are easily carried away with words. Just tell them that ‘I swear by my mother’s grave that I will not leave you’ or you may be creative enough to say ‘I swear by Davido’s song Ekuro, that I will never forsake you’…that is all you need to strip them off. It is just as simple as that, nothing more. Some genuine Yoruba ladies would not even want your money so long you are ready to be close to them always. They are always fond of these ‘me and my husband’ syndrome. They want you to be around when they need to be pampered, loved and appreciated. Like the radicle of a bean seed, it is amazing how some genuine Yoruba ladies could still choose to start a life with a guy from zero and expect to end their life with them, irrespective of all odds.

In fact, I suggest that this song should be on the playlist of every wedding ceremony and in every home where love song is expected to be the only matrimonial anthem.

Ekuro la labaku ewa (a bean seed and its radicle are inseparable)
Bojo ro (in rain)
Bo orun ran (in sunshine) 2x
Iwo sa ni te mi o (you are always mine)
Esu oni le ya wa (devil can’t separate us) 5x

When two lovers genuinely decide to be one and one forever, who can put asunder? Not even the DEVIL!

Song Title: Onyinye (gift)

ONYINYE

Unlike the previous song Ekuro, Onyinye (gift) as a title is self explanatory. It is simply the name of the lady that is being addressed by the singer. From a literary perspective, we could attempt to dig deep by showing the relationship between the meaning of the name Onyinye and the theme of love as expressed in the song. In contrary to what many Igbo men may believe, love can never be bought with money. True love is expected to be a free gift from God. You need to give love before you can earn it from God. Let’s see if the idea of love as a free gift from God is reflected in this song and also in the mindset of a typical Igbo man. By their fruits you shall know them, I am sure that this lyrics will help us to understand the Igbo men and women better than we may think. Kindly read on…

The Intro

e yeh e yeh e yeh eh
e yeh e eeeyeh
Onyinye eh ye eh
Mama eh , eh eh eh eh
Nne meh , eh eh eh eh
All the beautiful onyinye e eh eh eh eh
e ye eh

What a hell is this!!! (Permit my punctuation blunder). This is real, if you don’t believe me, go to the East, you will see plenty Igbo guys who can do anything to attract a lady’s attention. Some of them could go as low as crying, shedding hot tears. What a shame! An Igbo man does not care about whoever does the beat or whoever sings the song…all he wants to do is to attract your attention. When it comes to love matters, most Igbo men find it very difficult to different their wife from their mother.

I won’t blame them, what becomes of a man when he spends all his entire life savings in paying the bride price of a lady? Why won’t he cry when such moment approaches? I mean the moment when he will tell a woman (for the very first time in his life) that I am ready to freeze my account all for your sake. If you see any Igbo man who womanizes, he is not a true son of the soil. Possibly, his mother is a foreigner. There is no crown without a cross; no glory, no pain; no omelets without breaking eggs…you can’t approach an Igbo lady without… (you can fill in the blank space and send me a copy).

Holly shit! You peeps show no sense at all. I am very sure that many of you who abuse the writer or say he is one sided did not either go to school or did not get influenced by education at all. This letter is never a demoralizing or image killing type but even a hype for D'banj. If nobody talks about him just as nobody talks about artistes like Nice, Kas, Konga, Kellyhandsome and others again, that means he is soon gone into the group of the unknown voice. I rather see this as an avenue for him to prove to his fans that he has got the mind to blow irrespective of all odds. Either with Don Jazzy or anybody. This is rather a hype not a knife. It depends on how he sees it, if he can't prove himself worthy, it is a knife and if he is good enough as we all know him to be, this will only be a catapult for him. @omar22, @kott @alaoeri.This is just an informal letter written to a person with the first person narrative technique, how could he not be one sided when he is writing to D'banj not Don Jazzy. I assume you are also learned. Why not also try to do something creative with your brain by writing Letter to Don Jazzy. Who knows you may sell. Leave Nigerian mentality out of this. What mentality does the foreigners have? ***Yawning*** I think i need a coffee.

i think that the beauty of this write-up could be more appreciated from a literary perspective than just being literal about it. No man is God. Don or whoever he calls himself may also have his flaws. I am sure he does. But the truth has to be told. For instance, there is no special boss for 2face and the Psquare (for all i know) but they are still doing well and sustaining the fame. Who says D'banj can't fly with his next attempt. That writer, must have warned him to seek caution and not otherwise. so don't get it twisted joor...

HERE IS A COPY OF THE LETTER AS POSTED ON THIS LINK http://blog.playmyjamz.com/?p=139. You may want to read other interesting articles on the blog too. I hope you will find them friendly.

August 2, 2012.

Dear D’banj,

I commend your remarkable efforts with J SLEEK in the successful production of the new single ‘O yato’. No doubt, you have truly been able to show the world of your fans how good, creative and outstanding you could be without the influence of anybody. I have taken time to listen to the track over and over, sharing your passion for being free, being unique and amazingly incredible. Your melodious delivery reflects the spirit of imaginary gracefulness which is typical of every good music.

Although I am not fully a Nigerian, I appreciate and follow up on the Nigerian music industry and her notable artistes. I think I know a little about how you started your professional music career with the debut album Tongolo-No Long Thing (Volume 1) with your hit track Mobolowowon then you started wondering: Why Me?. I was aware of your encounter with Don Jazzy and how both of you dreamt to become a big shut in the Nigerian music industry with your names spreading through the whole of Africa. At a time when MOHIT was still crippling, I read that you and Don Jazzy almost considered being signed under STORM RECORDS on a 1million naira deal. But as God would have it, MOHIT was lifted by a life changing deal with the brand Kokofist (that N20 million miracle). From there and then, MOHIT had never remained the same.

D’banj I have decided to keep this letter as precise as possible because I know that you don’t like long things. This letter is meant to refresh your memory and inspire you to acknowledge your true brand. Just recently I wrote a piece on EIGHT SURE WAYS TO BRAND YOURSELF LIKE D’BANJ and analyzed the real quality of the brand called D’banj. If you had taken a closer look at the fourth point in my analysis, you would have known that you really got something twisted. Like I concluded (and also predicted) on the fourth point (with my conclusion in the eight point), ‘until you locate your Don Jazzy, you may never get a brand like D’banj.’

You need to understand that life is best lived cooperatively, not competitively. Though you may claim that your Don Jazzy had been very difficult for you to understand, you need to know that difficult people can be the greatest teachers for what you need most at some instances. In order to have a great influence in life, you need to constantly yield yourself to the influence of some important people in your life. Humble yourself by acknowledging that there are always lessons to be leant in life.

I heard about how you recently tried to forcefully acquire another Don Jazzy in your life…a dream which can never be possible. To every man in life, there is always a Don Jazzy, every other great person may look like him, but they can never be like him. Just as there is a Jay Z for every Kanye West; there is a Banky W for every Wizkid and Akon for every Lady Gaga, there is also a Don Jazzy for you. Kanye West may dream the dream for you; he can never live the dream for you. You can quote that anywhere.

No matter how silly and useless your Don Jazzy may seem to be now, you only need to keep on being humble to him for an illuminative career. Like your people would say, gba fun oga e! Yes, I know you love the idea of being illuminated beyond your imagination like brands such as Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Eminem et al. But go back to records; you will discover that there will never be all these brands without brands like Jay Z, Akon and Dr. Dre respectively (though Eminem claims to follow the inner voice, he still remains loyal to Dre)

As far as I am concerned, I see no flaw in your debut single under DB records, but I do hope you listen to your fans and the genuine voice of your fans, not the ones you hear them say to you. A genuine voice doesn’t speak, it pricks. The genuine voice keeps echoing that there is a missing magical finger of your Don Jazzy in the production of the ‘O yato’. You can see this for yourself too; for some 3 weeks now, ‘O yato’ is still not trending like the drop and hit ‘Oliver Twist’. Now I believe you should understand how you got the Oliver twisted.

Dapo, have you soon forgotten the craze and the good spirit behind the success of your Oliver Twist (a #9 hit download on UK itunes)? Think twice about this and amend your ways. Remember, the beauty of life is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. Stand up and relocate your Don Jazzy and show the world that you are man enough to possess your possessions!

Oh! This may seem very long a letter, but I hope it did make sense to you. Thanks for your patience.

Kind regards,

Hello Nairalanders,
I'm a Lagos based upcoming artiste. I came across a site some while ago while surfing the net. I think I may be of help to other up coming artistes in this forum. The site is new and I think it is Nigerian (but internationally endorsed). From the outlook, I think it is the first Nigerian site to offer many free services to the Nigerian up coming artistes. All you need do is to upload your song on the site for free, then ask people to comment, nominate, download and play your song from anywhere in the world. I just uploaded my song on the site. Come and see how people keep calling me from UK, USA, Spain, Ghana telling me they heard my song. You too can download and play my song from this link: http://www.playmyjamz.com/artist/luvt-opa-ireke Please remember to register and nominate my song as top ten. Remember to drop me some lines here if you like my song.

You can also upload your stuff as well. Just click on www.playmyjamz.com then register as an artiste. It is FREE!
