So I have a close friend who is of the opinion that doing traditional marriage is akin to appeasing the gods of the place of your intending spouse, and as Christians, particularly Catholics, we should not, under any guise, invoke deities, whether through calling on ancestors or the use of traditional elements to bless intending marriage unions, and then come to God in the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. 

Also, he is of the opinion that in the days of our forefathers, when a man married a woman traditionally, he was allowed to take multiple women, i.e., polygamy, and that by merely returning the bride price, the man could do away with the woman and take another one. So if he marries a woman traditionally, giving him leeway to marry as much as he might want, what’s the point of marrying sacramentally in church? 

He has personally said he’ll not have any traditional marriage, whether full or miniature, i.e., a “paying bride only ceremony” or paying a dime as bride price for his wife, as a woman is not for sale or to be bought.

Following the attainment of 25 years of unbroken democracy in the country, former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has said he has no regrets handing over the reins of governance to a democratically elected government in 1999.

The Chairman, National Peace Committee, who spoke exclusively with Sunday Sun in Abuja, looked back with nostalgia on how democracy has fared in the country, expressing satisfaction with the practice in the country.

General Abubakar, however, said that though there are some drawbacks, but when compared 1999 and today, democracy has really made advances in the country.

Abubakar who has been making regional interventions in the area of democratic practice, particularly in the West African sub-region, stated that yes, Nigeria is not yet there, “but we have come a long way since 1999.”


He stated that there was nothing to worry about on the level of the practice of democracy in the country as world political situation is causing upheaval. Excerpt:

Let me begin by asking you, how you are faring under retirement?

Well, Alhamdulillah, we thank God, so far, so good, the Chairman has been very nice and I have a lot of time with my grandchildren. We thank God.

Many people are still wondering how you are getting your energy to move around. How do you keep going?

As a military man, you know, we just have to weather the storm whether we like it or not. Well, I am struggling and I thank God that despite my age, I am still able to move as much as I want.

Don’t you think it is time for you to sit back and have some rest, having achieved so much in life?


You know sometimes when you are very active and during military regime, during my service years, which have been very active for me, and so, I feel delighted in moving. When I sit down and say I am going to relax, I would succumb, you know age is catching up with us and if you don’t do any exercise, you find yourself in a different position.

What is your daily routine like because you are approaching 82 next month?

We thank God. The daily routine is, you know, as much as possible, do a little bit of exercise in the morning as much as somebody can and then, you will face the day. You will receive people, you will receive your relations and relatives and so on.

Do you still visit the farm?

I have reduced going to the farm as the children have now taken over the farm. It is not easy. Once in a while, I go to the farm.

It is 25 years since you handed over to a democratically elected government. How do you feel 25 years after because people are still referring to our democracy as nascent?


Well, we thank God and I am very happy that it is now 25 years ago I handed over. And we thank God that Nigerians and Nigeria are enjoying the dividends of democracy. We are not yet there, but we have come a long way since 1999. The only drawback we have in the system is people still sell their votes and they do all types of things, they allow the politicians to use them in ballot box snatching here and there – unnecessary things that we should have overcome at this age. But gradually and thankfully, yes, Nigerians are gradually coming out of this menace, they are realising that their vote counts and they are making sure that their vote counts. Unfortunately, I still maintain, there are some very few people who abuse the process and they allow their votes to be bought. And if they are buying these votes, certainly they cannot be called to be accountable, the people who are being so elected.

Do you see us being at par with what happens in the United States and Europe soon where their votes count?

We will be deceiving ourselves if we think in 25 years you can catch up with somebody who has been practising democracy for the last 200 years. Yes, our hope is to be there, but even if you look at the politics now all over the world, it is messy. See right now what is going on in America, which is the basis of our democracy. You can see in the last election they had, right from the leadership of the country, the president is being accused of tampering with election result. And also, you have seen what has happened in America where within three, six months, they have so many prime ministers because of the murky field politically. And if I follow the news very well, in July, they are going to have general election. So, you can see politics all over the world is a murky affair, from America, the United States, in UK (United Kingdom). When I mean the Americas, I mean the Latin America and so on. Is it India? Is it the Philippine? Is it Australia? Is it New Zealand? Is it South Africa? The whole world political situation is causing upheaval.

But is this the democracy you envisaged when you were handing over 25 years ago?

You know democracy is a continuous process. You can’t say this is democracy. When you describe democracy, you are talking of government of the people, for the people and by the people. Yes, we are not yet there. There are some drawbacks, but compared to 1999 to today, I will say democracy has really made advances in Nigeria.

So, you have no regret handing over?


Not at all! Not at all! Not at all! I am happy with what is going on. Yes, everything is not perfect, but here we are today, celebrating 25 years of unbroken democracy.

You have been involved in regional interventions. How will you compare Nigeria with other countries in the region in terms of democratic practice?

Well, we have to thank God. Nigeria, we make a lot of noise, but in the long run, each and everyone thinks about Nigeria. Despite the fact that yes, there are political violence, there is arson and so on, but at a stage, Nigeria holds, sits back, thinks and comes out with a solution to maintain our integrity.

In some countries in West Africa, in our region, the military have taken over. Having handed over power to a democratically elected government in Nigeria, is that the right thing to do?

You see, whatever happens, it must be the political field that allows any military man to take over. When you are in government and there is no equity and justice, certainly this brings problem. You have a political party and even in the political party one belongs to, there is no democracy. So, certainly, you will expect some quivers, some quarrels to come out and if they are not handled amicably, certainly, this will result to military takeover. Remember there is no military man that takes over without the connivance and assistance of politicians and civilians.

From 1999 till now, we have seen Obasanjo as our president, the late President Yar’Adua, Jonathan, Buhari and now, Tinubu. How will you rate them individually?

Every leader, you know, has his good points and has some weaknesses. So, all of them, I can say, they did their best and they have made mistakes here and there. But like I say, it is a learning process. I hope the current President Tinubu who is in power, will learn from the mistakes the past leaders have made. I am not saying that I didn’t make mistakes; of course, there are lots of mistakes. Every leader does. It behoves on the current president to look at the history of the country to see where mistakes have been made and he tries to correct those mistakes and also does his own the way he thinks the country should be governed.

President Tinubu is one year in office. In the last one year, it appears Nigerians have suffered more than ever before. What advice will you offer Tinubu in order to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians?

I will say President Tinubu has inherited a very difficult situation. I compare him to the time I took over Nigeria. We had political problems that were very, very chaotic. Now, President Tinubu has taken over the country where it is struggling with insecurity, the economy of the country has gone down, our main foreign exchange earner which is the crude oil we have is in a lot of problems; the insurgents in the area where the oil is being produced are restless and are sabotaging the operation of the NNPC and also, you can hear it and see how our security agencies are fighting people in that area for setting up illegal refineries. So, I really know that President Tinubu has really inherited a lot of problems in Nigeria. But so far, so good, he was forced to take some hard decisions and I am glad that some of the decisions he took are really biting, but all the same, they are necessary for a leader who thinks for his country and for a leader who wants to better the country. Leading people is not easy. In one way or the other, you have to take decisions. There is a book in those days, John Ploughman’s Talk (authored by Rev. Charles Haddon Spurgeon, an English Particular Baptist Preacher), during our era. It says “Do not be all sugar, otherwise, the world will suck you in and do not be all bitter, otherwise, the world will spit you out.” This is the position President Tinubu finds himself. My prayer is that God continues to give him good health and the wisdom to weather the storm of leading our country.

Well, for Nigerians, let’s keep hope alive. There are a lot of problems like insurgency and insecurity, there is economic hardship and you can go on, the list is inexhaustible, but we shall keep hope alive and try as much as possible, try to see what we can do to better our country. Uplifting Nigeria is not the only responsibility for the government, but every one of us has a role to play. Let’s hope we play that role. Yes, I know it is a difficult situation we find ourselves and for me to ask Nigerians to tighten their belt, I know it will not be realistic. The belt has been tightened and there is no more hole to tight the belt. But I have some hope. We are getting somewhere.

General overseers need to treat local church pastors the way Jesus treated his disciples !

The average salary of a pastor in Nigeria is 30,000 to 40,000 Naira ( 30-40USD) a month! How can a pastor with a family survive on this? With the prevailing conditions in the country, GOs need to up their pay. These pastors are crying and unhappy ! Many of them work full time and don’t have any other source of income!

These pastors have to also ensure that a large percentage of income generated in church through tithes and offerings are sent to the headquarters on a weekly basis! I have had some of these devoted pastors tell me how they feel sad that the headquarters takes almost everything and they have little or nothing to run their local churches!

I find this preposterous, someone slaves away to build a local ministry and sends almost everything to the headquarters for the big boy at the top to live large with his family! GOs are not more important, special or better than any child of God.

The General overseers in the headquarters fly private jets, drive bulletproof luxury cars and live a life of luxury while the foot soldiers( pastors in local churches) wallow in poverty!
Jesus was difficult to separate from his disciples because they had the same quality of life hence the need to have a Judas betray him when the time arose.

I am looking forward to a time when it will be difficult to separate pastors of local branches from the GOs. A time when they will all wear same quality of suits, drive same quality of cars, have access to fly the private jets and also have same quality of life! That is when I will be convinced the GOs really want to be like Jesus!

All in all, General overseers need to be more considerate and put less financial pressure on their pastor foot soldiers. They should also pay them decent salaries(minimum of 100k/mth and ensure the financial gap between them and their pastors is significantly narrowed!

It's just the weather that changed the narative. The period you did the seedlings would be on point last season. The ones i transplanted in batches were result of failed nursery replanted twice. Henceforth i will prefer sowing in batches to combat the unpredictable weather.

I am not sure what the SPF5000 can handle (early models say 18, later models 22) but the SPF6000es which is rated for 16A on each MPPT can handle 60A. This is direct from Growatt engineer. The bottom line with growatts and many (not all) inverters and SCCs is do not exceed VOc under any condition but there is often a lot of wiggle room on current side.

I think two 3.5-4K strings in parallel on an spf5000 is a sweet spot. It should give reasonable to good output in bad weather and will have a broader output curve and won’t waste too much power in sunny weather

We have started harvesting the cucumber on the first section of our cucumber. This harvest came so early because harvest was supposed to start on the 5th of this month.
Price of a bag of cucumber is so high that I have to pity my customers by reducing my own price a little, then I instructed my boys to bag the cucumber surplus as seen in the picture below.
A bag currently goes for 28k but I sold mine 25k flat. We harvested a total of 9 bags and we sold all immediately.
Many people are not producing cucumber now as a result of the high price of the seed and previous bad weather

An Abuja-bound Air France flight has dropped off 61 Nigerian passengers in neighbouring Chad and allegedly abandoned them in the country.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, disclosed the development via his X handle (formerly Twitter) on Saturday evening.

The Minister said he had immediately directed the Consumer Protection Department of Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to swing into action and engage Air France even as he urged the airline to quickly speak out on the fate of the Nigerian passengers.

In a video posted by Keyamo, the passengers, including a former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Johnson Agbonayima, were heard lamenting their fate, saying they hoped the Nigerian authorities will quickly do something about their plight.

Keyamo wrote: “It has come to my attention that some Nigerians on an Air France flight from Paris to Abuja are presently stranded in Chad, from where the flight earlier dropped some passengers.

“I have immediately directed the Consumer Protection Department of NCAA to swing into action and engage Air France. We shall inform everyone of the outcome soon. Meanwhile, I urge @AirFranceNG to immediately issue a statement on the fate of those Nigerians.”

However, in an update provided by NCAA following the directive of the Aviation Minister, the Air France aircraft was said to have developed a fault owing to weatheric conditions.

Head of Consumer Protection Department of NCAA, Michael Achimugu, who also took to X to respond to Keyamo’s directive, said the affected 61 passengers have been accommodated in two hotels in Chad pending their airlift to Abuja.

Achimugu stated: “We have engaged the airline. Aircraft developed a tech due weather. All 61 passengers have been accommodated in two hotels and feeding is taken care of. Discussions are ongoing to ensure pax are flown in ASAP. Will provide further updates shortly.”

LEADERSHIP reports that just last week, Turkish Airlines left over 300 Nigerian passengers stranded at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, a development that infuriated the Federal Government of Nigeria, hence its intervention and subsequent airlift of the passengers to Istanbul.

Lagos, June 1, 2024 (NAN) The Lagos State Government (LASG) on Saturday handed over a police station it constructed to the Marine Division of the force in Epe.



The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN)reports the old police station is to be demolished by the state government to pave the way for a road project in the local government area.



Speaking at the handing over ceremony , Special Adviser to Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Infrastructure, Mr Olufemi Daramola, said the planned demolition of the old station and construction of a new one was to enable government promptly deliver the expansion of Awolowo Way-Ita Marina road project.



Daramola,represented by a Permanent Secretary, Mr Ayodele Somide, said the old police station was marked for demolition because it was standing in the way of the ongoing project.



Daramola said that the expansion of segment five of the project required redesign of the existing vertical and horizontal curves on the road alignment.

This, according to him, necessitated the relocation of the existing Epe Marine Police post and some other structures on the new road alignment.

“Taking into cognisance the security implications, a new Marine Police Post had to be built to accommodate police officers .

“This is the only outstanding challenge to the full completion of the rehabilitation/upgrade of the strategic arterial/inner roads (Phase II) in Epe L.G.A, which is currently at 95 per cent completion”,he said.





He said the expansion of the road and other inner city roads in the town had become inevitable to eliminate potential gridlock and reduce travel time through improved road connectivity.







He said government was improving road infrastructure in the area because “Epe and its environs are presently witnessing an influx of people and increased traffic volume as a result of industrial and commercial growth arising from the development of the Dangote Oil Refinery, Air and Sea ports as well as industries within the Lekki Free Trade Zone”



Speaking ,Mr Fady Bourjely, representative of Cranberg Construction Limited, the contractor handling the road project ,said the new police station was built by government because the old one was delaying the execution of the road project.

“The implication is that we can continue the work. What is holding us back now is for the officers to shift to the new building so we can continue as fast as possible.

” The project is now just with the demolition of the old police station which will take place June 5 so we can commence work, by August we should be done.

” Although it depends on the weather because now we are in the rainy season. It may have some delay time because of the weather,” Bourjely said.

A representative of the police , SP Richard Ekemerusu, commended the state government on the new station.

“One thing about the structure is that even though it is close to the river, water can never wash it away.

“There are boulders, which are big rocks arranged around the structure, preventing erosion from washing it away.

“The former structure that we were using was old , not befitting the status of the Police.

“But the present one is a very beautiful one, the one that will actually help us to perform our duties well.

” There are a lot of things there.You have the security cameras.Inside, the personnel that are working can see far away from where the structure is located and criminals can be sighted far away.

“With the CCTV camera, we are going to perform. We are performing very well, but this one is going to improve our performance, and we are going to make the citizens happy because our job is to protect lives and property of residents,” he said.

NAN reports that the government also handed over a 12 -room bungalow to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) in Badagry.

Daramola said that the 12 -room bungalow would facilitate the delivery of the ongoing Hospital Road project (Phase 1), in the area.

NAN reports the old NCoS staff quarters were on the Right of Way of the Hospital Road project (Phase 1), a strategic road that transverses Idale, Akarakunmoh, Povita, Topo and Ajido communities to the Lagos-Badagry Expressway via Joseph Dosu Road.

” The result is a sleek and functional living space that prioritises the well-being and comfort of the NCoS staff.

” The project reached its fruition after the tireless efforts, of the project team from the office of Infrastructure and the Staff of the NCoS which culminated in the official handing over.

“Also the handing over of the quarters would make room for the completion of Hospital Road, which is currently 80 per cent completed”,he said

Speaking at the handing over ceremony ,Controller of Corrections, State Headquarters, NCoS. Mr B. R. Freedman, he appreciated the LASG, for the expeditious reconstruction and handing over of the staff quarters

He said that the reconstructed staff quarters were delivered with a generator to ensure uninterrupted power supply,adding it would enable NCoS staff to carry out their tasks efficiently.
