Foreign Affairs / Re: Russia Has Sufficient Military Clout To Fulfil All Of Its Aims In Ukraine In Ful by SecretAgent7706: 7:08pm On Mar 14, 2022
US told us that Russia has the biggest army in the world, suddenly it tells us about how Russia is asking for a military assistance from China while on the other hand US and NATO fear that Russia might use hitech weapons such as ICBM, nuclear weapons and others. Yesterday they were surprised when Russia hit Ukraine just 25km from Poland territory but today they change the topic and the Ukrainians are dying and pleading for help, America says it's not Ukraine crying it's Russia. I wish Ukrainians can concentrate on negotiations and save their nation because the more resistance the more damage they invest. I also wonder about thr airstrke yesterday at the military base, with NATO air defence system installed, yet it was damaged, i wonder, i just wonder what the Rusians have that is so powerful

Foreign Affairs / Russia Has Sufficient Military Clout To Fulfil All Of Its Aims In Ukraine In Ful by SecretAgent7706: 7:07pm On Mar 14, 2022
Russia has sufficient military clout to fulfil all of its aims in Ukraine in time and in full.
LONDON, March 14 (Reuters) - The Kremlin said on Monday that Russian forces could take full control of major Ukrainian cities and it had sufficient military clout to fulfil all of its aims in Ukraine without any help from China.

The United States and its European allies have cast President Vladimir Putin's invasion as an imperial-style land grab that they say has so far been poorly executed because Moscow underestimated Ukrainian resistance and Western resolve to punish Russia.

"The defence ministry of the Russian Federation, while ensuring the maximum safety of the civilian population, does not exclude the possibility of taking major population centres under full control," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.
Peskov said claims by the United States and European Union that Putin was somehow disappointed with the progress of what the Kremlin casts as a special military operation amounted to a provocation aimed at prompting Russia to storm cities.

The United States, Peskov said, had shown its complete disregard for human life with the bombing of Yugoslavia and its capital Belgrade in 1999, its wars in the Middle East and the invasion of Afghanistan.

"We don't need advice from such strategists," Peskov said. "All the plans of the Russian leadership will be achieved on time and in full."

Peskov said Putin had at the start of the operation explicitly asked the defence ministry to avoid storming major cities such as Kyiv because he thought Ukrainians units would use civilians as shields.

He said some Ukrainian cities were already surrounded by Russian forces.

When asked about remarks by U.S. officials who had said that Russia had asked China for military equipment, Peskov said: "No."

"Russia possesses its own independent potential to continue the operation. As we said, it is going according to plan and will be completed on time and in full."

Politics / Russia will ban Instagram in 48 hours by SecretAgent7706: 10:07pm On Mar 11, 2022
First Facebook, now Instagram
One week after placing a ban on Facebook in Russia, the country’s communications agency Roskomnadzor announced it will ban Instagram, too. While the Facebook ban cited “discrimination against Russian media,” this time, the government claims it’s happening because of a decision by parent company Meta directing moderators to allow posts calling for violence against Russian soldiers if they originate from certain countries, including Ukraine.

Google translated from Russian, the agency’s statement says the following:

As you know, on March 11, Meta Platforms Inc. made an unprecedented decision by allowing the posting of information containing calls for violence against Russian citizens on its social networks Facebook and Instagram.
Messages are circulating on the Instagram social network encouraging and provoking violent acts against Russians, in connection with which the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office demanded that Roskomnadzor restrict access to this social network.

Since it will take time for active Instagram users to transfer their photo and video materials to other social networks and notify their contacts and subscribers, Roskomnadzor decided to complete the procedure for imposing restrictions on access to Instagram at 00:00 on March 14, providing users with an additional 48 hours of transition period.

The government’s decision does not mention that Russian oligarchs have used Instagram to speak out against the invasion. In some instances, this extends to the children of oligarchs who have become influencers with large followings like Sofia Abramovich, daughter of billionaire Roman Abramovich, who reportedly shared a message saying, “the biggest and most successful lie of Kremlin’s propaganda is that most Russians stand with Putin.” Banker Oleg Tinkov, who was at one point the 15th-wealthiest person in Russia, is one of the most notable dissenters with a post that ended by saying, “We are against this war!”

Sort of funny that America has gone begging Venezuela for oil. So the Americans want to use Venezuela and Iran as a second fiddle after falling out with the Russians? All this while they were purnishing ordinary Venezuelans with sanctions in the name of fighting human rights abuses...so now the human rights situation in Venezuela has suddenly improved to the point of easing sanctions on their oil and gas? Does this not show the selfish angle of the whole sanction system? Everything is for US interest. You become evil when u go against them. Suddenly same you becomes Angel Micheal or Gabriel, when they need you.

Meanwhile gas prices are hitting $7 a gallon in some parts of the country!!
Politics / Breaking : USA Bans Russia Oil Import by SecretAgent7706: 6:02pm On Mar 08, 2022
US President Biden:

- Ban includes oil, gas and energy
- We understand allies might not be able to join us on ban
- We remain united in our purpose to pressure Putin

WASHINGTON — President Biden announced on Tuesday that the U.S. will ban the importing of Russian oil, liquefied natural gas and coal, broadening the economic sanctions leveled against Moscow over its war in Ukraine.
The decision to target Russia’s most lucrative industry despite the likelihood of higher energy prices at home comes as bipartisan support in Congress was coalescing behind restrictions on Russian energy.

The White House had initially shrugged off calls to ban Russian oil, arguing that the impact on global markets would be destabilizing to the West. Administration officials had also said that deep economic sanctions were already hitting Moscow’s biggest banks and several oligarchs close to Russian President Vladimir Putin, weakening the ruble and the nation’s economy broadly.
But Biden clearly warmed to the idea as support grew from Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill for a bipartisan bill to ban Russian energy, even as some Democrats worried that they would pay a political price in November’s midterm elections for public frustrations about high gas prices.

In announcing the restrictions from the White House, Biden said the action was designed to target “the main artery of Russia’s economy,” adding that the ban would “deliver another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine.”

It is the first time the U.S. has gotten ahead of its European allies in sanctioning Russia. That could be because Europe relies far more heavily on Russian energy imports. The U.S. imports around 700,000 barrels of oil a day from Russia, accounting for less than 10% of the nation’s energy supply. Europe, which has not yet banned Russian energy, is far more reliant on it, importing more than 4 million barrels a day.

Banning Russian oil imports could lead to higher prices at the pump in the U.S. gas is averaging $4 a gallon nationwide, up from $2.77 a year ago, according to AAA. The average price of gas in California during that same period has risen from $3.75 to $5.34.

Until now, the economic strangulation of Russia by the West over its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine has avoided its robust energy sector. But as Russia increases its unrelenting bombardment of Ukrainian cities, political pressure on the West has grown to do more to put pressure on Putin to stop the onslaught. U.S. officials said the Biden administration is also considering easing restrictions on imports of oil from Venezuela to alleviate the void left by Russian oil bans, a politically problematic step.

The administration was facing pressure to enact an oil ban before Congress took action. Members of both political parties have introduced bills in both houses to block such imports. Congress is weighing an oil ban as it pushes to pass a measure to send Ukraine billions of dollars in emergency assistance. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Monday called for passage of a $12-billion aid package this week, saying it “will provide both humanitarian and military assistance for Ukraine: funding for refugees, medical supplies, emergency food supplies, as well as funding to support weapons transfers into Ukraine, and help for our eastern flank NATO allies.”

In a letter to House Democrats on Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) said Congress intended to pass $10 billion in emergency aid for Ukraine as part of a larger government funding measure. The House is also exploring legislation that would “further isolate” Russia from the world economy, Pelosi said.

Foreign Affairs / European Leaders Warn Against Ban On Energy Imports From Russia by SecretAgent7706: 8:08pm On Mar 07, 2022
The leaders of Germany, Britain and the Netherlands cautioned Monday against abruptly banning Russian energy imports as part of sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, saying there were no immediate alternative supplies.

The pushback came after the United States on Sunday said it was in “active discussions” with European nations about shutting down Russian oil imports as a further economic penalty over Moscow’s aggression.

“Europe has deliberately exempted energy supplies from Russia from sanctions,” German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement.

“Supplying Europe with energy for heat generation, mobility, electricity supply and industry cannot be secured in any other way at the moment,” he said.

“It is therefore of essential importance for the provision of public services and the daily lives of our citizens.”

Russia is one of the world’s biggest crude producers and is also a leading supplier of natural gas.

Europe’s top economy Germany is heavily dependent on Russian fossil fuels, importing an estimated 55 per cent of its gas and 40 per cent of its oil and coal from Russia.

Like other European nations, Germany has vowed to wean itself off Russian energy by boosting the use of renewables, but the government has stressed that the switch will take time.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, speaking at the same press conference, agreed that the energy transformation would “take time”.

“The painful reality is we are still very much dependent on Russian gas and Russian oil,” he said.

Cutting off Russian energy imports without ready alternatives could “generate unmanageable risks” for European economies, he warned.

“We have to be very clear and make no mistakes here.

“This is a step by step approach and that means that we have to make sure that the energy supplies in this part of the world, again, including Ukraine, but also the rest of the world are not hindered.”

Foreign Affairs / Ukraine Vs Russia: US Extends Sanctions On Zimbabwe Because It's A Threat To Its by SecretAgent7706: 6:49am On Mar 07, 2022
US extends sanctions on Zimbabwe because it's a threat to its foreign policy

The United States (US) has extended its sanctions on Zimbabwe, a month after the European Union (EU) did the same.

In a statement, US President Joe Biden said this was done because Zimbabwe's gross human rights and democratic principles disregard are a threat to the US' foreign policy.

Biden wrote:

The actions and policies of certain members of the government of Zimbabwe and other persons to undermine Zimbabwe's democratic processes or institutions continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the foreign policy of the United States.
"For this reason, the national emergency declared on March 6, 2003, and the measures adopted on that date, on November 22, 2005, and on July 25, 2008, to deal with that emergency, must continue in effect beyond March 6, 2022. Therefore, in accordance with Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)), I am continuing for one year the national emergency declared in Executive Order 13288," reads Biden's statement to US Congress.

In 2001, the US Congress passed the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (Zedera) to provide for a transition to democracy and to promote economic recovery.

In its justification, the US said: "President Emmerson Mnangagwa has not made the necessary political and economic reforms that would warrant terminating the existing targeted sanctions programme."

The US also noted that opposition politicians and journalists herald people who bore the brunt of violence from the state.

"Throughout the last year, government security services routinely intimidated and violently repressed citizens, including members of opposition political parties, union members, and journalists."

Biden said:

The absence of progress on the most fundamental reforms needed to ensure the rule of law, democratic governance, and the protection of human rights leaves Zimbabweans vulnerable to ongoing repression and presents a continuing threat to peace and security in the region.
The renewal came a week after the Citizens Coalition For Change (formerly the MDC Alliance, led by Nelson Chamisa) faced political violence that claimed the life of its supporter in Kwekwe. Mboneni Ncube was stabbed three times and died upon arrival at a hospital.

It was also reported that 22 coalition supporters landed in the hospital for critical injuries.

Responding to Ncube's death, Amnesty International's deputy director for southern Africa, Muleya Mwananyanda, said it was a well thought out plan by the ruling Zanu-PF.

"This assault bears all the hallmarks of a premeditated attack that aims to intimidate political opposition and block access to their constituents," he said.

Some of the most notable figures on the US sanctions list are Zanu-PF benefactor Kudakwashe Tagwirei – widely accused of state capture and enabling Zanu-PF financially – as well as former state security minister Owen Ncube, ex-minister Sydney Sekeramayi, Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri, party stalwart Patrick Chinamasa, and exiled Saviour Kasukuwerem, an ally of deceased former president Robert Mugabe.

Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the sanctions are a non-event which is "vindictive" because of Harare's stance on the land reform programme.

The renewal flies in the face of President Emmerson Mnangagwa's re-engagement charm offensive that saw him enlist the services of US lobby firm Mercury Public Affairs, whose contract until the end of 2021 was worth around R1 374 000 (US$90 000) per month.

Travel / Nnamdi Okafor: I Will Rather Be A Refugee Or Die In Ukraine Than Return by SecretAgent7706: 9:37pm On Mar 05, 2022
A Nigerian based in Ukraine, Nnamdi Okafor has declared his preference for becoming a refugee rather than returning to Nigeria.

He said this in an interview with TheNiche Newspapers on Friday.

Asked why he wasn't taking advantage of the Federal Government's evacuation flights to return home, he said, "What am I coming back to Nigeria to do? Has anything changed in our country?"

The 32-year-old Anambra indigene added, “For now, I am still in Ukraine. I used to live in the capital city, Kyiv, but I have moved to one of the border towns which is relatively safe presently.

“But if the war reaches there, I will escape to another country by the grace of God. But if death becomes my destiny, so be it. I would rather be here as a refugee than return to Nigeria."

Ukraine has become a battlefield following the invasion of the country by Russia more than a week ago.

Foreign Affairs / Ukraine Vs Russia: Western Medias Using False Picture To Spread Propaganda by SecretAgent7706: 12:40pm On Mar 02, 2022
Western news and social media have exhibited a racist double standard in support for different peoples’ resistance against military occupation.

While Ukrainians have rightfully garnered expressions of sympathy and solidarity for taking up arms and making molotov cocktails to defend themselves from Russian violence, Palestinians — who have been struggling against Israeli colonization and occupation since the 1940s — have been demonized and punished for their resistance, including for actions that have been falsely but favorably attributed to Ukrainians by social media users.

For example, social media users have admiringly shared viral images of Ahed Tamimi, a Palestinian girl who was vilified and imprisoned for confronting Israeli soldiers throughout her childhood, with the false claim that she is a Ukrainian girl confronting a Russian soldier.
We must stand in solidarity with everyone resisting occupation, including and especially Black, Brown, and Indigenous people who are not lionized or even humanized in Western media. Wherever there is oppression, may there thrive resistance!

Foreign Affairs / Your Actions Won’t Go Unanswered, You’ll Bear Consequences – Russia To EU Nation by SecretAgent7706: 2:47pm On Mar 01, 2022
Russia has warned that any country, especially in the European Union, that provides lethal weapons to Ukraine during the ongoing war, would face the consequences of such action.

The country warned that it would continue to ensure realization of its national interests despite sanctions from the West.

This declaration was made on Monday by the country’s foreign ministry, according to CNN.

Russian Foreign Ministry, in a statement, lashed out against the EU’s plans to provide arms to Ukraine.

“EU citizens and structures involved in supplying lethal weapons and fuel and lubricants to the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be responsible for any consequences of such actions in the context of the ongoing special military operation. They cannot fail to understand the degree of danger of the consequences,” the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement read.

Russia further described the sanctions from the Western countries as another myth that had been propagated by the European Union.

According to the ministry, the EU intends to inflict maximum damage on Russia, “hit its weak points, seriously destroy its economy and suppress its economic growth.”

He said all these and any other plan to be propagated against Russia, “we want to assure you it will not work”, adding that “the actions of the European Union will not go unanswered.

“It is time for Western countries to understand that their undivided dominance in the global economy is long a thing of the past.”

The Ukraine and Russia war entered its sixth day on Tuesday, with hundreds of people reported killed, while thousands of others have been displaced.

Cañada Real is a shanty town in the Madrid Region of Spain, a linear succession of informal housing following a 14.4-kilometre-long stretch of the drovers' road connecting La Rioja and Ciudad Real.

With around 8,048 inhabitants and 2,650 houses as of 2012, the Cañada Real was considered at the time to be the largest shanty town in Southern Europe.
