Weeds are initially controlled about every 6 to 8 weeks; but when the plantain canopy closes, about 5 to 6 months after planting, weed infestation declines due to shading. Any plant with a superficial root system should be considered a weed and therefore eliminated. Grasses or herbs are the most pernicious weeds because they derive their nutrients from the same level of the soil as the plantains.

Plantains should always be weed-free. Weed control starts during field preparation.

The success of the procedure depends on this stage. Note that the base of the plantain plant has a conical pseudostem formed by the leaf sheaths of its spirally arranged, long, thin leaves. Peeling involves remo-ving these leaf sheaths one by one. At the level of the bulb, there is a light-coloured band (the colour depends on the variety) that attaches each leaf sheath to the bulb; this is called the knot.

If your soil is alkaline, you can lower your soil's pH or make it more acidic by using several products. These include sphagnum peat, elemental sulfur, aluminum sulfate, iron sulfate, acidifying nitrogen, and organic mulches. |
The weeds are too much ....for herbicides to penetrate properly, kindly use man power to weed first and do not allow the weed to compete with the plantain as this will reduce the yield production.... After weeding please apply some fertilizer, and the after one week use glyphosate herbicides and never let it touches the leaves

Molecular DNA-based markers are powerful tools for gaining insights into individual genetic characteristics, and for determining allele frequency. DNA markers were developed first for humans, then applied in plants, and subsequently for the analysis of the banana genome (Figure 2). This feature allows plant breeders to select only those individuals with desirable characteristics and significantly reduce the selection time.

In this chapter, we discuss the development and applications of molecular marker technology to improve some of the commercially available Musa cultivars and to assess their genetic diversity.

Bananas and plantains belong to the family Musaceae and are cultivated throughout the humid tropics and sub-tropics. This crop is perennial with a faster relative growth rate compared to other fruit crops, while producing fruit all year round. Because of their nutritional value, bananas and plantains are considered the fourth most important crop worldwide after rice, wheat and corn. |
Plantain is an Alterative meaning that it is one of about 100 plants that clean and correct impure conditions of the blood and the eliminative tissues and organs. kenfarm Research Team explains that although many herbs might work fast on a given organ to relieve engorgement to really be an Alterative herb it must do the job slowly but surely, toning the organs as well as cleaning the blood. This herb does that and can be used completely. The roots, leaves, flowers and seeds can be used internally or externally. |
The desired pieces of the plant are usually planted 30–60 cm (11.8–23.6 in) deep in the soil and should generally be planted at the end of the dry season or the beginning of the wet season. Plant spacing is dependent on the cultivar being planted. Frequent weeding is required until plants are tall enough to shade out competing plants and should be started about 6 weeks after planting

Our government needs to support real farmers. They need to select farmers that have passion, vision and can see the future of farming in Nigeria, not the two bags of fertilizer or one bag of maize they distribute to farmers. I have about 40 acres of land, what will two bags of fertilizer do for me? The best thing is for government to bring back the Bank of Agriculture. My vision is to go for 120,000 suckers because I know I can. I have the suckers and the land, the only problem is fertilizer and funds for other inputs. Funding is what is breaking farmers down,” he said. / |

High postharvest losses are among the major problems limiting the availability of plantain in the country. As a result of poor handling, postharvest diseases are commonly seen on fruits sold in the country: visit: www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng
