The bulk of the plantain, cooking banana and plantain are eaten either as raw, in the ripe state, or as a cooked vegetable, and only a very small proportion are processed in order to obtain a storable product. Generally, preserved products do not contribute significantly to the diet of the millions of people who eat banana, cooking banana and plantain, however in some countries or areas, the processed or preserved products are important in periods when food is scarce. Processing is recognized as a way of preserving the fruit. Yet the proportion of fruits processed and the suitability of the various Musa groups to processing is relatively unknown. The compensation point of each species at an average temperature of 79°F. was determined at the point where the regression line of CO2 absorption on light intensity crossed the abscissa-the light intensity at which CO2 uptake equals CO2 evolution. Seedling pretreatment, photosynthesis determinations, and leaf area and weight measurements were obtained as described for the first study.

Black sigatoka is a leaf spot disease caused by the fungus Mycosphaerel/a fijiensis. All known plantain cultivars are susceptible to this wind-borne fungus. Leaves first show yellow spots which later turn brown and black. Ultimately the leaf tissue becomes necrotic and dies. In this way entire leaves become nonfunctional and in many cases, bearing plants are left with hardly any green leaves at maturity. Photosynthesis is reduced and small bunches (sometimes with undeveloped fingers) are produced. Yield losses are estimated at between 30 and 50 percent. Visit www.sedulusplantainsucker.com.ng
