The experimental area was located in the northwest corner of the Iowa Conservation Commission State Forest Nursery, 1 mile south of Ames, Iowa. The soil of the experimental nursery area is O'Neill sandy loam, a brunizem. Its parent material is stratified outwash of the Cary or Mankato glacial drift, or both. This soil occupies high terraces that vary from nearly level to somewhat eroded.

ractical Understory Treatments A study designed to test several understory treatments of possible value in stand conversion practices was established in March 1956 as one approach to artificial regeneration under low-grade forest canopies. The primary objective was to test several methods of potential practical value in understory treatment and to obtain information on materials, equipment and effects on competing u

With one acre of plantain farm ,we should provide sufficient laborers that can work without supervision .After the panting ,we will need to weed from day-1 to 90- days continuously because this are the time we call trial period for the plant and if this is not adequately taken care of, some plant will won’t produce up to the expectation and standard and below is the table on how we can be weeding from day-0 to 90-days. Its not that weeding don’t require after 90days but it will be minimal to that of 90 days ....or however herbicide van be adopted.

Plantains are eaten as a vegetable and are cooked prior to consumption. They are an important component of many dishes in Western Africa and Caribbean countries. In addition, the leaves of Musa species can be used as a source of fibre for thread, cloth string, thread or can be used as thatch and roofing. The plants are also grown as an effective source of shade for other crops.

This type of Soil moisture Content is measured in m3.m-3 (so howmuchofacubic metre is water out of the entire cubic metre of soil sample). Alternately, the Volumetric Soil Moisture content can be referred to as a % of volume (which is much easier).

Soil water content is expressed on a gravimetric or volumetric basis. Gravimetric water content (θg) is the mass of water per mass of dry soil. It is measured by weighing a soil sample (mwet), drying the sample to remove the water, then weighing the dried soil (mdry). .. Volumetric Soil Moisture Content refers to the volume of water in a given volume of soil as discussed on previous pages.

The success of the procedure depends on this stage. Note that the base of the plantain plant has a conical pseudostem formed by the leaf sheaths of its spirally arranged, long, thin leaves. Peeling involves remo-ving these leaf sheaths one by one. At the level of the bulb, there is a light-coloured band (the colour depends on the variety) that attaches each leaf sheath to the bulb; this is called the knot.

Musa parasidiasca belongs to the natural order, plantaginaceae which contains more than 200 species, twenty-five or thirty of which have been reported. The common plantain (Plantango major) has broad, irregular oval leaves, abruptly contracted at the base into a long broad, channelled footstalk. The fully grown blade is 1.3–2.4 meters long and about two- third as broad, usually smooth, with several parallel veins. Plantain grows more than any other plant in compacted soils, is abundant beside paths, roadside and other areas with frequent soil compaction. It is also common in grassland and as a weed among crops.

1. Do you have an empty land? if yes you are well positioned, it grows in all kinds of soil but best in a loamy soil
2. Prepare the soil by decomposing it with decaying plants, mulch etc., this is to protect the suckers from the harsh sun that may dehydrate it
3. Get plantain suckers from heathy plant and cut space them
4. In case you wish to add fertilizers, use very little and ensure they are mostly good NPK fertilizers.
5. Do not weed the plantain with any form of modern implement especially at their early stage of development, use mostly hand to weed so as not to harm the tender sucker
6. water them as may be needed

than 18 percent (472,000 acres) of the commercial forest area in Iowa is in nonstocked stands (Morgan and Compton 1956). These stands contain so little timber that they are not grouped in any acceptable saw timber, pole timber or seedling and sapling classification. The high density of undesirable shrubs and noncommercial tree species that invade these understocked areas precludes their use in timber production until a new stand is established. The inferior shrubs and tree species must be replaced through a combination of overstory-understory canopy removal and underplanting practices.
