I haven't driven upto 6 hours straight before, especially on the highways.I have the strength and will though.

The anxiety is fear for the stability/durability of my car.It's a Honda accord 97 which has never given me headaches: no overheating, brakes, transmission or "legs" issues.I religiously do regular maintenance.I have this fear that this car that rarely disappoints will do when I travel

please, I need the house to guide with with a checklist of what I need to do on my car so as to have a successful journey.long distance drivers..especially.thanks alot.

Pls how did you eventually end it, and how was your experience, I'm in similar situation to yours now, I'm planning on travelling to Kano State from Abuja this Holiday on my personal car. Though I have driven long distance before with somebody's company from Abuja to Jama'are Bauchi State, but now I want to travel to Kano State Alone. Any advice Sir? Thank you

Watch the road and your gauge cluster carefully as you drive two signs you’d never want to see are an overheating engine and low oil pressure signs. These two signs are not dangerous to your health but can make you sleep on the road and pay heavily for a tow truck

To dodge real danger to your health and safety -

Keep your speed moderate and reduce it when it rains. Indulging in races is a recipe for disaster

Your tyres really matter so make sure they’re all in good condition and you have a functional spare with the tools needed for an emergency change

Give cars ahead of you enough distance so if they’re involved in an emergency you can evade them on time

If you’re driving at night on unfamiliar roads follow the car in front of you tyre for tyre by observing their taillights so you know when to swerve or slow down

Don’t drag lane with trucks on the roads or at holdups or checkpoints. They will bash you happily and you can’t fight them

Eat light and drink more. It’s better to stop to urinate than shit

If possible don’t travel alone and if you’re sleepy find somewhere to park and sleep for only 30minutes and continue your journey. The sleep will run away till further notice. Don’t drink anything or chew kola as it isn’t as effective as the sleep itself no matter how short it was

Don’t drive directly behind trucks as their tyres can pick up and fling debris onto your windshield

Don’t force forcefully to overtake especially while on high speed or in a one way lane

If your car unfortunately breaks down clear properly off the road and use your caution signs and hazard lights

Don’t argue with police

Same thing happened to me when I got my car in March, 2019. I drove the car in Lagos till December when I wanted to travel.

Initially, I wanted to take the bull by the horn but my siblings were scared and talked me into hiring a driver that charged me an arm just to drive me from Lagos to Imo state.

Since he didn't mean to stay for the Christmas period, I had to pay for his transport back to Lagos.

When it was time to return to Lagos, I told myself I ain't gonna waste that kind of money again.

I told my siblings that traveled with me that it's either they have faith and believe that we'll get to Lagos in peace or they should board public transport to Lagos because I am not hiring anybody but driving the car myself to Lagos.

Well, they joined me and we got to Lagos in peace. December 2020, I drove myself home and back again. Now, it is no longer news.

So, just start and you will get use to it.

I will not say am a new driver because I have been driving for a year and half now. I bought my first Car Peugeot 206 Manual late last year (around September). I learnt how to drive to the extent I will call my self a professional. I can drive anywhere within Abuja upto Gwagwalada and beyond no hassle.

My only issue now is how to become a professional long distant Driver. On my first long distant Trip, I hired a driver from Abuja to Bauchi, upon return the driver said he couldn't drive me back on the agreed date we planned that he has one or two things to do, that I had to wait for another two days. meanwhile, i had schedule to attend the following day..my instinct said i should try to drive my self back while another instinct said I should wait for the driver.

Eventually I decided to try to drive my way back to Abuja.

Though I drove back to Abuja successful ly, my naivety couple with my inexperience made me fell into a pot hole that I had to do some major repairs when I got back. Though I learnt from the experience.

Now I'm planning to embark on a Trip to Kano with my brother this Holiday but am a little bit worried and scared.

How do I overcome this fear and become a better doing Long distant Trip driver from professionals in the House.
