Nigeria National League Group B2 Botched match

Afuape: No Regret Over ABS Match

-After Leading Gateway FC’s Boycott In Ilorin
-Ogun Sports Commissioner Suspects Foul Play

Ogun State Youth and Sports Commissioner, Afolabi Moruff Afuape has declared that he has no regret in leading Gateway United of Abeokuta to refuse against playing the crucial last second tier Nigeria National (NNL) match away against Abubakar Bukola Saraki(ABS).

He said he took the decision amidst tension and harassment in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, as Ogun State Football Association chairman ,Ganiyu Majekodunmi and General Manager of the Abeokuta-based side, Tunji Onatolu described last Sunday’s ugly incidence as most disgraceful for Nigerian football .

Afuape, who was speaking in Abeokuta on Tuesday, also took a swipe at the role played by Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Honour Sirawoo in the whole saga, particularly his recent comment on Channels Television that there was no reason for the visiting Gateway United to abandon the match despite presence of security.

But the commissioner maintained that the decision was taken in the best interest of the team and people of the state, citing high level of insecurity at the match venue with reference to the rules guiding the league.

“That there must be minimum of 50 policemen or security operatives before commencement of any match,” he said, while also alleging that only less than 20 security personnel were on ground as at 4.45pm for the match to kick-off.

Afuape said a protest letter had since been filed against inhuman treatment, accused ABS top officials of harassing and intimidating Ogun State high power delegation led by Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi and 10 commissioners that accompanied the visiting team.

He said they were all on the Ilorin trip for the match that was to decide which of the sides with 21 points each will be promoted to the elite Nigeria Premier League from the group.

Afuape also said the home team official led by its manager Alloy who insisted that the match would be played behind close door, prevented the clubs supporters and government delegation from gaining entrance to cheers the Gateway boys for the needed win.

However, it took more than 45 minutes after 4:00 pm slated for the match to kick -off before some of the delegate and players and officials were eventually allowed into the main bowl.

This, according to Afuape , violated another rule of the league that clearly stated that any match that was deliberately delayed by the home side for more than 30 minutes, would be forfeited and the three points awarded to the visiting team.

He said this was not the case in the encounter as match commissioner whom he suspected of foul play ,refused to accept the protest filed immediately on the pitch.

“My worry is that justice must be done ,we can not continue to run our league in this manner, where visiting team and official s were subjected to harassment before match,” he stated,

The commissioner also vowed to take the protest beyond the organizers ,if justice is not done ,to seek legal redress, insisting that the match must be played in the open with minimum presence of security.
