PoliticsThree Post-presidency Projects Of GEJ by SenJoe(op): 10:35am On Aug 16, 2015
The immediate past president, Goodluck Jonathan, has embarked on at least three projects since he handed over to President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2015.

Speaking with Daily Trust on August 16, Sunday, a close confidant of Jonathan revealed that the ex-president is working hard on his memoir.

“The former president, for those who know him closely, is not given too much talk.

“He’s kept himself from too much on publicity, but I can tell you that he’s busy writing a book, in which he will recount his experience over the years. He is putting together the records of his administration, his personal files and notes in a research format, with details of how events took place and how decisions were taken. That is why he’s been silent about diverse attacks since he left office. The book will tell his story, and I assure you, many Nigerians will be shocked by its content,” he said.

According to the former aide, the memoir will tell Jonathan’s grass-to-grace story, his political adventures, his experience as vice-president and president, and the presidential election which he lost.

The aide added that apart from writing memoir, the former president is setting up a foundation, called Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, which will promote good governance, democracy and engage in humanitarian activities.

“The foundation is not targeting the Niger Delta region alone. Nigerians from all parts of the country will benefit from it. Already he has acquired an office in Abuja, and he’s working closely with local and international consultants on the principles, vision, mission and strategies of the foundation,” he said.

Commenting on the probe of the petroleum sector under the ex-president, the former aide expressed his assurance that nothing would come out of the exercise.

“The former president expected everything that is playing out now. There’s a lot of falsehood being peddled around, and he’s been under pressure to speak but his book will answer many of the questions. All the allegations about billions of dollar being stolen are the same old story, but I tell you, the ex-president doesn’t have a foreign bank account; he doesn’t own a house abroad.

“When he travelled abroad in June, he flew on a commercial flight, Air France from Port Harcourt. He doesn’t have a private jet. The money he spent during the elections was not his own. People donated to the project. The billions of dollar being talked about, where does one keep those sums? So far, no one has accused him directly, so there is no specific allegation for him to deny. Everything revolves around the old $20 billion. Nothing has been traced to anybody, unlike the Abacha loots which were traced to several foreign bank accounts.”

It was also gathered that Jonathan is involved in the process of re-engineering the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It would be recalled that some of the party’s leaders blamed the former president and his wife, Dame Patience, for the party’s loss of the presidency after ruling Nigeria for 16 years. Therefore, now Jonathan has been reportedly involved in the efforts to revive the party.
Daily Trust learnt that the first step the ex-president took was to hold series of meetings with the PDP leaders in London shortly after he left office between June and July, 2015.

During that period, the party’s top officials and some of his former aides reportedly flew to London to discuss the loss of power to the All Progressives Congress and the future steps that should be taken.

Although some politicians described the London meeting as speculation, Reuben Abati, the former president’s spokesman, confirmed it.

“I get tons of positive messages with common questions like “Where are you? What are you doing, Dr. Reuben Abati?” I’ve been participating in the Advanced Management and Leadership Programme of the Oxford University’s Said Business School since the 7th of June. I had a great time discussing Nigerian politics with my boss and former president Jonathan in London over the weekend.”

It is worth mentioning that there were indications that the former president planned to retire from politics and devote his time to God and humanity. However, the leaders of the PDP insisted that if Jonathan quit politics, it would be impossible for the party to rise from its big fall.

“The party’s leaders told him that he’s the only unifying figure and factor in the party at the moment.

“Former president Obasanjo had dumped the party. He should have been the rallying point. Therefore, the party needs former president Jonathan to survive, and that’s the role he’s playing at the moment,” the aide noted.
Meanwhile, the former president and his wife Patience are making frantic efforts to stop the looming massive defection expected to hit the Bayelsa state chapter of the PDP.

Man Undergoes Surgery To Look Like Michael Jackson

A 20-year old Iranian refugee has now become a mini celebrity in his own right, having undergone surgery to look like pop icon, Michael Jackson.
Abbas Sharhani left his family and fled war-torn Iran  when he was 16 years old, later making the journey to Australia by boat via Malaysia and Indonesia. He was held in a Darwin detention centre for three months and after his release, he straightened his hair and had plastic surgery so he could make a living According to Mail online, Abbas disclosed that he still suffers the loneliness and isolation of being a refugee.

He said: “Despite the fame, it has not erased the loneliness and isolation of the experience of being a refugee so far from home and family. However I do find joy in performing for people everyone loves Michael Jackson. From the bottom of my heart I love the way he dances.”

Speaking on his strict Muslim upbringing and how his family responded to his change, he said: “they were like “why would you change your appearance and change your hair?” They weren’t happy, they didn’t accept it. It is difficult being far away, but I just keep doing what I’m doing. Dancing is my passion“.as a Michael Jackson impersonator.

RomanceAmnesty International Votes In Favour Of Decriminalizing Commercial Sex Trade by SenJoe(op): 8:41am On Aug 12, 2015
adopting a policy supporting the decriminalisation of prostitution. The organisation has since received widespread criticism for its stance.

According to F Word, the decision was taken at the human rights group’s International Council Meeting (ICM) in Dublin by a majority of the 400 delegates from 70 countries.

Speaking on the development, Amnesty International Secretary General Salil Shetty, called it a historic move.

“Sex workers are one of the most marginalised groups in the world who in most instances face constant risk of discrimination, violence and abuse,” he said after the vote.

It was not a decision that was reached easily or quickly and we thank all our members from around the world, as well as all the many groups we consulted.”

In addition, Amnesty is petitioning for the decriminalisation of third parties involved in prostitution, such as pimps and brothel operators, alongside sex workers themselves.

Amnesty International (commonly known as Amnesty and AI) is a non-governmental organisation focused on human rights with over 7 million members and supporters around the world. The stated objective of the organisation is “to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated.

CrimePolice Gets 14-day Ultimatum From Ogoni People by SenJoe(op): 12:07pm On Aug 11, 2015
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has issued the police a 14-day ultimatum over the gruesome murder of an Ogoni man, David Legbara by a policeman, Sergeant James Imhalu.

The group has demanded the immediate prosecution of Imhalu and payment of adequate compensation from the police to the family of the deceased within 14 days or they would be forced to protest peacefully and non-violently against the killing, PM News reports.

It was learnt that the deceased, who hailed from Uegwere-Boue community in Khana local government council of Ogoni in Rivers state, until his death was a commercial bus driver, the only child of his parents and bread winner of the family.

In a statement signed by Bari-ara Kpalap, the media advisor to the president of MOSOP, the group said: “The Ogoni people, we must say, are keenly watching and would accept nothing less than justice not only being done but also seen to be done in record time.”

Kpalap said Legbara was killed in questionable circumstances at Whimpy junction, Mile 4, Ikwerre road, Port Harcourt on Friday, August 7, 2015.
“The condition under which Mr. Legbara was killed is reminiscent of past situations wherein a huge number of Ogoni natives have been gruesomely murdered over the years by the police over the latter’s attempts at extorting money from our people.

“Reports available to MOSOP have shown that the issue occasioning this latest death was extortion-related but seemingly masked otherwise,” he said.

MOSOP stated that the police officer had no right to kill Legbara, irrespective of his offence, adding that, “As a police officer of his rank, he could not have feigned ignorance of the fact that he was prohibited by law and good conscience from denying the deceased his inalienable right to life hence the it is believed that the policeman’s killing of the Ogoni was deliberate because there were acceptable options available to him.”

The group further expressed concern over the violent approaches most police officers use in extortion, saying it had become a major source of concern and an appalling embarrassment to the people.

They therefore, called for the comprehensive reform of the Nigeria police.

There was an early morning rowdy protest on Saturday, August 8, following the killing of the commercial bus driver by the trigger-happy policeman. The protest extended to major highways and caused traffic gridlock that crippled most parts of the city till around 1.30p.m.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state had condemned the killing, vowing that the killer-cop would not go unpunished.
