Politics / Most Of The Laws In Nigeria Are Outdated , Here ’s What I ’ll Do About Them by seunwen2(m): 3:01pm On Jul 24, 2015 |
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Yakubu Dogara has said most of the laws in Nigeria were outdated and do not align with current realities. He made the remarks while speaking to members of a 22-man committee he has set up to oversee legal reforms for various sectors of the Economy. “The major reason that informed the setting up of this committee is the urgent need to review the various laws in the statutes book, some which have become obsolete and outdated. “Your committee is being inaugurated today (Thursday) to assist us in cleaning up our statutes book and bringing all our laws up to date in order to meet the social, political and developmental needs of our country,” Honourable Dogara said Besides reviewing the old laws, the Committee will suggest new laws and reforms that will help the anti-corruption campaign amongst other issues within 60 days. The Speaker urged the committee members to engage their individual and undivided attention to the law reforms. “Law reforms put laws in place that will aid the anti-corruption struggle, infrastructure renewal, efficient and optimal utilisation of our petroleum resources, solid minerals, education and social services, agriculture, diversification of our economy and massive employment of our teeming youthful population,” he said thesparkng.com/2015/07/most-of-the-laws-in-nigeria-are-outdated/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Politics / Governors Express Worry Over High Naira Exchange Rate by seunwen2(m): 2:39pm On Jul 23, 2015 |
Nigeria governors have expressed worry over the high exchange rate of
Naira to other foreign currencies.
They have therefore said this and other issues would be discussed with
President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja on Thursday.
This was one of the resolutions arrived at by the governors after their
meeting in Abuja on Wednesday night.
The meeting, which ended in the early hours of Thursday, was attended
by majority of the governors.
Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, who is also the Governor of
Zamafara State, Alhaji Abdullaziz Yari, read the communique of the
meeting to journalists.
It was gathered that Naira is being exchanged for about 243 to a dollar
at parallel market.
Yari said, “We are going to discuss with Mr. President to seek lasting
solutions to the worsening macroeconomic challenges confronting the
nation, especially on foreign exchange stability.
“The forum pledges to work with Mr. President to ensure coherent policy
actions that will create a clear policy direction for the country and
stimulate domestic production.”He also said the forum discussed health
issues and that the governors pledged to cooperate with the Federal
Government to ensure that the National Health Act is operational.”
According to him, “Sequel to presentation made by the Country
Representative of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the forum
agreed to aggressively support the total eradication of polio in the
country.”
The NGF chairman denied the insinuations in some quarters that the
money given to the states was meant to bail them out of their financial
crisis.
Rather, he said what was shared was money from the Nigeria Liquefied
Natural Gas Company Limited and Federation Accounts Allocation
Committee, which, he said, were legitimate earnings for the three tiers
of the government.
The governor said, “It is also to inform our brothers in the media that
yet the federal government has not given any bailout to any of the
states.
“What had been shared last time was monies from NLNG and FAAC and
as we have been saying, we have not been looking for bailout, instead,
we have been looking for all monies that are in the coffers of the
federation account, most especially we are talking about some of the
monies that are hung around the coffers of government to be brought
together for the purpose of sharing.” www.punchng.com/news/governors-express-worry-over-high-naira- exchange-rate/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |

Politics / Buhari Uprightness Stood Him Out - PDP Governor by seunwen2(m): 5:12am On Jul 13, 2015 |
Ebonyi state governor, Dave Umahi, yesterday salutes President Muhammad Buhari describing him as a forthright leader. He disclosed that the President has displayed such crucial attribute in government since assumption of office almost six weeks ago. Umahi stated this when he paid a private visit to the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta. He also eulogized Obasanjo for using his wisdom in piloting the affairs of the nation. While disclosing his reservation over Obasanjo roles during and after the general election,he said: “after the election, politics should be played down, the welfare of the people, rebuilding the nation should be in the front burner and that has been what you’ve been preaching sir. And we are very grateful. “We see a great nation in Nigeria. And I use this opportunity to thank Mr. President sir and to say one of the greatest things that will move this nation forward is forthrightness, which President Buhari has been displaying. “In our meetings, every governor is pleased with him. It is not a question of being in this party or the other. He displays rare sense of humility, honesty and the willingness to carry this country forward.“And that’s what we are looking for. We are not interested in this party or other party,we are interested in the man who has the welfare and the interest of the nation at heart”,Umahi disclosed.” The governor also commended President Buhari’s efforts to restructure the accounts of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC). He hinted that he had once discussed the issue with Obasanjo, which he expressed dissatisfaction over how the sector is being run. He stated: “President Buhari directive to stop many accounts of NNPC is a welcome development and I’m sure, it gladdened you because I had discussed that with you and you complained bitterly about the way it was being run; when they keep more money than what they give the federal government. “So, we thank you and I want to say sir that you continue to support President Buhari, and I’m very sure with you sir by his side, he is going to deliver in his promises. We are grateful to you sir and we pray that God will continue to sustain you and give you wisdom. “It’s amazing sir, because you are a great man that is full of wisdom. I know the hands of God are so much about you and you are an acclaimed leader of the universe, God has kept you for us and will continue to sustain you. “We have the opportunity to right the wrong, there is no administration that wouldn’t have some ills, but the most important thing is the ability and the knowledge and wisdom to identify them like you just advised me here; all those good ones will continue with them, the bad ones you can always right them. “We thank you because you are always there for our nation, you are always there for our people and we thank God who has given you health and great wisdom to continue with this job. I praise your courage and wisdom”,Umahi said. Obasanjo earlier in his welcome address described the governor as his in-law,reminding him of his role during one of his sons marriage to an Ebonyi girl, where, according to him, “when we came on that occasion, you were the one who spearheaded all the arrangement and the reception for us. I thank you for that”. The former president said: “I was saying that because your state is reasonably peaceful, people in Nigeria don’t hear much about Ebonyi and yet, what I know of it is thedynamic, it’s also a complex state, it remains a peaceful state. I believe the honour and commendation goes to you and your predecessors. “I know of course as I said jokingly that you, being governor should not be strange to you because you have been in the corridor. In fact more than the corridor, you have been in the sitting room of power before your taken over. “I want to say this so that you pressmen can hear it. One of the things that Ebonyi is noted for is rice and I want my in- law in his capacity as my in-law, I wants you to be feeding your daughter, I wont say more than that. He promised to visit the state soonest to retaliate the honour given to him and his people by the governor. Obasanjo added: “I really appreciate this honour and of course, I would only end like Idi Amin, since you have been so kind to pay me and all of us here this courtesy visit, I will have to retaliate by making sure that I come to Ebonyi in not too distant future.” 1 Like |
Politics / 2 Key Witnesses In The Case Involving Nyako Dies Mysteriously – EFCC by seunwen2(m): 4:22pm On Jul 12, 2015 |
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
Yesterday shocked a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja as it
disclosed that two of its crucial witnesses in the N29 billion
fraud cases against former Adamawa State governor,
Murtala Nyako and his son, Abdulazis, had died mysteriously.
The EFCC made the shocking disclosure while opposing the bail
application filed by the accused, arguing that the sudden
death of two of its key witnesses in the case had instilled
fears in the minds of other witnesses thus preventing them
from coming forward to testify against Nyako and his co-
accused.
The anti-graft agency listed the two witnesses to include a
Regional Manager with Zenith Bank, Ma’aji Mohammad Iro,
who was in charge of Adamawa State Government’s
accounts with the bank and allegedly assisted the former
governor in the looting spree.
EFCC said because “two of our crucial witnesses, Ma’aji
Mohammed Iro and Abdulmalik Dalhatu have died in
mysterious circumstances,” this has instilled fear in other
prospective witnesses in the case.
Explaining how the former governor and his accomplices
allegedly looted Adamawa State of billions of naira into their
private companies, EFCC argued that it would be too
dangerous to allow the accused persons go on bail.
Nyako, his son , Abdulazis, as well as two of the former
governor’s former aides, Zulkifikk Abba and Abubakar Aliyu,
along with five companies in which they allegedly have
interests had been arraigned in June by the EFCC before the
Abuja court on a 37-count charge bordering on conspiracy,
money laundering and abuse of office.
The companies are Blue Opal Limited, Sebore Farms &
Extension Ltd, Pagoda Fortunes Ltd, Tower Assets
Management Ltd and Crust Energy Ltd.
However, temporary relief came for the accused persons as
they were granted bail in the sum of N350 million each by
the court which turned down the objection of the EFCC.
Ruling on the matter on Friday, presiding judge, Justice Evoh
Chukwu, not only turned down EFCC’s objection but also
granted bail to the accused persons in the sum of N350
million each with either two sureties or one, who is a director
in any Federal Government’s establishment.
The sureties, according to Justice Chukwu, must own landed
property in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), show evidence
of tax payment for the last three years and must swear to
affidavit of means. He also ordered the accused to deposit
their travel documents with them.
When the charge was read to the accused earlier on
Wednesday, they had all pleaded not guilty and on Friday,
Justice Chukwu adjourned further hearing in the matter to
