Most football lovers probably know all the 32 countries that participated in the World Cup as well as followed all the matches. How much then, do we actually know about the World cup and especially the trophy being used? The World Cup trophy used every 4 years do have some amazing facts surrounding it some of which are as follows: 1. The FIFA World Cup trophy which is in use in recent years was commissioned by FIFA in 1974. Silvio Gazzaniga, an Italian sculptor, was awarded the commission after sculptors from 7 different countries made a total number of 53 submissions. 2. The previous trophy being used since the World Cup inception, the Jules Rimet Trophy was stolen from the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janario. It was the 2nd time the Jules Rimet Trophy had been stolen. It was recovered the 1st time wrapped in a newspaper down a garden hedge by a dog. The 2nd time however, it was never recovered. 3. The trophy used since the inception of the World Cup in 1930, the Jules Rimet trophy was originally named ‘Victory’ but was later renamed in 1946 in honour of the FIFA President, Jules Rimet who voted for the initiation of the tournament in 1926. 4. The common tradition of lifting the world cup up in the air after winning it started in 1958 when Brazil won the tournament. The captain then, Hilderaldo Bellini lifted the cup up in adherence with the journalists’ requests to get better view of the cup. Since then, every captain of the winning team lifts up the cup. 5. The Jules Rimet cup had to be kept by Brazil permanently in 1970. This was because Brazil had won the competition for the third time since the inception. This was done in accordance with the stipulated rules by Jules Rimet in 1930. It was then that the cup was kept in the Brazilian Football Confederation headquarters in Rio de Janario before being stolen the 2nd time. Now that we know some of the facts accounting the World cup trophy, we’ll be able to appreciate more the tournament in general.
