To answer this question in such a way as to clear the doubts of anyone with a contrary view, we must first understand what a profession is. A profession is a paid occupation, especially one that involves a formal education. A paid occupation... That involves formal education.... So let's measure teaching against this yard stick. Is teaching generally a paid occupation? YES YES YES In all my years of formal education, I have not seen any teacher volunteer himself at the school to impart knowledge on the students free of charge. Have you seen? NO NO NO Furthermore, before you can get employed as a teacher, you must have passed through a formal education where the art of teaching would have been taught to you. Have you ever seen a teacher who did not pass through the four walls of a school. NO NO NO Having passed the above litmus test in what I'll consider flying colours, won't you then agree with me that truly teaching is a profession? Or have I left any room for doubt? |
Good question! I wish someone had sat me down to ask me this question when I was an undergraduate. |
