Yes

Teaching is a profession as you have to study and obtain some certification before you can teach

There's is a body that teachers belong to, teachers can also be trained and retrained and advance on the job

Teachers can be specialists and they get paid for the service they provide

They are essential in the society

They may not have a Creed but they have a code of conduct i. e dress code and have a work ethic to adhere to, often strictly and they must be disciplined and professional in their conduct both on and off the job because they are assumed to be mentors to their students

personally i won't consider teaching as a profession

Teaching is an inbuit traits, it's absolutely within

we obviously have varieties of teachers (Islamic scholars, Bible/Sunday school teachers, parental/guidian tutors to mention but a few)

these aforementioned categories are obviously a teacher. but nonetheless, do not consider it to be a profession

while majority of those in the formal education settings. particularly, we Nigerians without any iota of doubt consider it as an option, a second fiddle et al. Interestingly, majority of those in the formal sector (teachers) are not happy in what they do, possibly they have no other offer at hand and they deem it fit to opted for what's on ground. they aren't proud of what they do

Nobody is proud to be a teacher, no parents want their beautiful daughter to get married to a class room teacher.

those who had the skills, the intellectual capacity to impact adequately aren't there, they rather consider something else other than a class room teacher

Personally, you don't have to acquire a formal education before you can be referred or addresed as a teacher, we do have religious tutors who perhaps didn't see the four walls of classrooms but were able to impact! judiciously, some got paid in their various religious denominations while some don't but they were happy

some of our parents didn't see the four walls of classrooms. Nevertheless, they made us a responsible fellow we are today in the society due to their dedication, adequate monitoring, mentorship, guidance and what have you in our upbringing. They most times thought us what those class room teachers were unable or can't teach us

My parents are my teachers which they don't even see as an option to be considered as a profession!

Lastly, a teacher is a service to humanity which personally i don't consider a profession!

To answer this question in such a way as to clear the doubts of anyone with a contrary view, we must first understand what a profession is.

A profession is a paid occupation, especially one that involves a formal education.

A paid occupation...

That involves formal education....

So let's measure teaching against this yard stick.

Is teaching generally a paid occupation?

YES YES YES

In all my years of formal education, I have not seen any teacher volunteer himself at the school to impart knowledge on the students free of charge.

Have you seen?

NO NO NO

Furthermore, before you can get employed as a teacher, you must have passed through a formal education where the art of teaching would have been taught to you.

Have you ever seen a teacher who did not pass through the four walls of a school.

NO NO NO

Having passed the above litmus test in what I'll consider flying colours, won't you then agree with me that truly teaching is a profession?

Or have I left any room for doubt?
