By Yusuf Pappa Tomiwa These thoughts have been gathering at the back of my mind for a while now. Like dust, they haven’t exactly settled together in a place but i’ve decided the dawn of birth has set upon them. Talk of Nigeria dividing/separating whichever word best describes ‘secession’ has been ongoing long before i knew it’s meaning and lately it’s been ringing everywhere. In Mosques, Churches, Schools, and even in my small head. Initially, the debate was on what would divide the country fastest; Tribalism or Religion? Now, stemming from incessant bombings by ‘You-know-who’ in the North (mostly) all fingers seem to be pointing towards the religious perimeter. Last Thursday (August 25th), some ‘gun-men’ struck just about 25 minutes drive to where i was then. They killed 4 Policemen, a Soldier, several civilians and robbed two notable banks. It made the news, not just locally because i later saw it on Yahoo news. It was easily concluded to have been the work of ‘You-know-who’ judging by their modus operandi. I shouldn’t nauseate you with more gory tales here but this isolated incident got my brain-box in overdrive. Questions came flooding in naturally like mosquitoes in rainy season. Could it have been ‘You-know-who?’, What was their overall plan? Was it division? If yes, along what parameters; religious or tribal? A lot of people are already clamouring for separation emphasizing that it’s the best panacea for Nigeria’s problems. I always disappoint most when I disagree it’s not. Here’s what I think; * Nigeria is foremost a ‘political’ entity not a tribal or religious one * Political entity translates into ‘united by politics’ which in reality means ends, means, resources etc or to be precise crude ‘oil’ economics * Tribalism and religion divides rather than unites us as a people. Incessant ethno-religious conflicts in the country attests to this fact (e.g perennial Jos crisis). Even with Massob, Arewa, Omo O’dua etc it is as glaring as day that there’s still factionalism within these groups and the tribes they claim to represent. * I also believe the same reason Nigeria won’t split is part of why NYSC hasn’t been scrapped. So, in the event of separation (if it ever were possible) by any tribe, i foresee, division after separation, followed by fragmentation and then eventual dis-integration. This leads me back to thoughts of ‘You-know-who’ and their elusive overall motive. At best, their stated grievances/goals/agenda are flimsy and untenable. Their virulence seem to be directed at ‘Western influence’ with emphasis on ‘Islami-sation’ of the country. I don’t doubt it’s a bad idea but they should answer this question first; Should we do away with Western influence/education but retain the bombs, ammunitions, weaponry, and motorcycles used by them in their operations yet were manufactured by Western influence/education? I’m waiting… Seeing as their actions/activities belie their ’cause’, i’ve arrived at these ‘thoughts’ about them. * I would like to think they are copycats of MEND or arose from the pursuits of similar interests i.e recognition from FG. * I also think secession is not the overall goal (and i think choosing this option would enrage them further just like the strong arm measures currently in place e.g JTF) * I think creating a ‘war hysteria’ (condition of general insecurity) had been part of the plan all along. * I think they are not as ubiquitous and organised as they make believe. * I think ‘copy-cat miscreants’ are thriving in the ‘war hysteria’ created by ‘You-know-who’. It’s a mutual relationship beneficial to both parties. (I still think last Thursday’s incident and some others before it were copy jobs not ‘You-know-who’) * I think the fact that FG’s not giving them recognition, or considering amnesty/official pay-off for them but is doing/did the same for MEND is part of what irks them most. * I think withdrawing the JTF even temporarily would give a clearer picture of what they want and are really about. * I think finding out why their erstwhile leader was ‘silenced’ abruptly in custody would be a good place to start getting tangible results. Invariably, these are just conjectures/theories and i do not claim to have the best understanding of these issues raised here, afterall, I’m just one head in 162 million! http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/08/31/opinion-should-nigeria-split-up-2/ |
In a recent interview with 234Next, Chocolate City Group executives, Audu Maikori, Yahaya Maikori, and Paul Okeugo revealed that the label is in search of a Beyonce-calibre female singing star. “Ideally, the new choc girl will be the complete package: physically appealing, good voice, stage presence, and able to speak intelligently when interviewed by the press,” NEXT reports them to have said. The Chocolate City execs so far appear to be impressed by Kele Kele Love singer, Tiwa Savage. On her performance at the Crack Ya Ribs comedy show with Julius Agwu, Chocolate City boss Audu Maikori said ”She was fantastic. She worked the crowd, danced, and was just captivating.” The execs further revealed that “What has eluded every female musician in Nigeria thus far is a runaway club hit like Ice Prince’s Oleku, or his latest track, ‘Super Star’, or Mo’Hits’ ‘Give it to Me’.” The label is currently on the look out for promising female talents that could hopefully become the next “Choc Chic.” http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/08/30/chocolate-city-group-in-search-of-beyonce-calibre-female-singing-star/ |
By Abiola Olaifa I was born to a Christian father and a Muslim mother. My mum later converted to Christianity as our cultural belief is that any religion practised by the head of the house, is the religion for the family. My mum’s conversion to Christianity was without any troubles from her kinfolks since it was believed that we serve the same God. I have relations, friends and neighbours who are Muslims, we all co-habit and live in peace in the same neighbourhood, my mum’s Islamic background gave me a good knowledge of Islam and I can easily recite some of the quranic quotes. I did not for once doubt this religion as a religion of peace. We all live together in harmony, believing that we are serving the same God, but in different ways. At Christmas, our Muslim friends and family visits my home, we have one or two Sheeps ready to go for the big Christmas celebration, we all eat, danced and partied together. The same is the case when it is time for the Muslim’s Sallah festival, we all gather in my Uncles, who already have their Rams ready for the slaughter, these are always exciting moments for us. We also enjoyed playing with and using the Rams for fights before they are slaughtered and these are great moment of excitement for us kids. We do not see ourselves as being religious enemies or opposite or unequal before God in whatsoever way. We were happy together and we often attend one Islamic lectures or the other in my uncle’s home from the Alfa’s that visit for prayers on weekends, this are equally very happy moments for us as we are sure that we will have some food to eat at the end of the prayer session. The recent event is throwing this happy inter-religious relationship into the winds, not only am I getting worried about the latest developments, I am equally saddened by the appalling and heartless killings going on in Nigeria at the moment through suicide bombings. I have not been able to fathom the immediate reason for this, except accepting this as a sure sign of the end times. Does it mean that those practising Islam before are doing it the wrong way or a new version of Quran has just been invented which is very hostile to the opposite religion? If the Quran is still same one used by the Alfa’s in my uncle’s home, then we are in for a new inconceivable disaster. The spokesperson for Boko Haram, the Islamic extremist group recently claimed responsibility for the bombing of UN Building in Abuja, in a phone call to BBC. He claimed further that there are more than 100 recruits ready to carry out more suicide attacks in Nigeria, just after the country was thrown into panic on the 26th of August 2011. It broke my heart to hear that this act is being perpetrated because of God and the need to Islamise Nigeria. This group reason that killing innocent people is a sure way to achieve their aim of winning people to Islam. I beckon on these newly recruited bombers to be wary of the effect of these heinous attacks on our world and the psychic of the people, no one with his right senses will change to Islam if you continue with these activities. Violence has never been and will never be the right way. I am confident that these killings are not for God, but purely to make political statement. It could not have been for God if you must shed human blood for sacrifice to the same God, who they ironically say also wants to save the world. I have believed based on teachings from the Alfa’s visiting my Uncle, my mother and personal discovery that God should be some humble-spirit, interested in saving the world and a comfort to those in trouble and that we pray to about our problems and he helps us through it. I am now beginning to have a change of mind, if these killers are saying they are committing all this crime in the name God and that God will make them martyrs if they are able to kill so much people, then this God must be different from the God I have previously known. This is a serious and dangerous consternation to my long held belief about Islam and I am absolutely startled. I have many questions going on in my head that I sure need answers to; what do you aim to achieve by killing those you choose to convert. If the reason you give is to change the unbelievers to accept Islam, how would a dead person accept Islam? Must violence be the way to make your voice heard? Has God instructed you to carry out these unlawful killings or is this politically motivated? If this God makes you a Martyr as you claim, would you be happy by how many people your sect lands in hell through sudden death, since they have no time to repent of their sins. Why must you create so much fear and panic to the world to impress your views on others? I am of the opinion that if God has ordered this killing as these suicide bombers claims and the same God is happy with what they are doing, then I do not want to be associated with this God. He must be a God with no human face and I dissociate myself from such heartless God. Also if you are perpetrating these evil acts out of the need to be made a martyr and have a place in Al-Jannah as you claim, then it’s a big shame, I equally do not want to be associated with such a materialistic religion. I have a personal message for the over 100 suicide bombers still left in Nigeria as claimed by Boko Haram, who are ready to attack at any moment. Please stop and think for once, your next victims may be your brother or sister. Do not be deceived, you have no mansion and beautiful bride waiting for you in heaven, but hell. Sit back and think before you strike. It is not fair on the already volatile planet, there is so much panic and pain, and what joy do you get in that. I have spoken to many Muslims and confident that this killing is not Islamic, let us all hold tight and pray for these religious asinine to stop this unnecessary killings, they are not heroes at all as they believe, but criminals. The world now live in fear because of these extremist groups, let us pray for this evil acts to stop and for the perpetrators to be caught and brought to justice. Let us pray for the repose of the soul of the dead and for the peace of the world. http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/08/30/opinion-to-the-100-suicide-bombers-left-in-nigeria/ |

Huawei’s popular $100 Android Smartphone, Ideos has been a hit in Kenya quickly becoming a best seller after launching less than a year ago. For the first quater of this year, it was the most popular smart phone in Kenya beating previous favorites such as the Blackberry and the iPhone. Read this post to learn more about how well the Ideos did in Kenya this year. The Ideos’ advantages are glaring. It is very affordable and in a region like Africa where earnings by citizens are so low, this is a massive attraction. https://www.cp-africa.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/huawei.jpg In terms of features, the phone runs on Android 2.2 with a touch screen, has up to 16GB storage and has the ability to be transformed into a 3G Wi-Fi hostpot that can connect up to 8 devices. Hearing about Huawei’s success with marketing the phone in Kenya begs the question, will it do well in other African markets? With such fast acquisition rates, it could easily be the catalyst for promoting wide spread adoption of smart phones in other parts of Africa. Currently low end and feature phones are prevalent among majority of Africans. However, the affordability of the Ideos and its ability to provide previous low end phone users with access to the Internet could make a world of difference in boosting Internet penetration rates in many countries in Africa. A key market of course is Nigeria. With over 83 million cellular phone subscribers (according to the Nigerian Communications Commission, the NCC), Nigeria is an attractive market for testing the impact a phone like the Ideos can make in increasing smart phone penetration rates. If current low end phone users in Nigeria can purchase the Ideos, mobile Internet penetration rates have the potential of skyrocketing, thus further positioning the country as a prominent player in the African Internet space. However, phones like the Blackberry have quickly become a favorite amongst Nigeria’s young people and is an instant class symbol. It has aspirational value making it the object of envy to other young people who don’t own one. Even Nollywood has cashed into the craze for the Blackberry through its movie, “Blackberry Babes.” You can watch snippets here. Will the Ideos do well in Nigeria? For instance, would its affordability advantage persuade young people with the aspirations of getting a blackberry in a sense, “settle” for it instead, if it is launched in Nigeria? At his recent visit to Lagos, Nigeria, British Prime Minister David Cameron had some interesting commentary on Nigeria’s growth prospects in the coming years. According to him, some predict that in the next forty years, Nigeria will have the highest average GDP growth rate in the world. “Tell me this: which part of the world has seen its number of democracies increase nearly eight-fold in just two decades? Eastern Europe? No, it’s Africa. Which continent has six of the ten fastest growing economies in the world? Asia? No, it’s Africa. Which country is predicted by some to have the highest average GDP growth in the world over the next 40 years? You might think Brazil, Russia, India or China. No. Think Africa. Think Nigeria.” – David Cameron What do you think about this prediction? http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/07/22/nigeria-predicted-to-have-the-highest-average-gdp-growth-in-the-world-over-the-next-40-years-david-cameron/ |

Are you all high on crack? You actually think this was the Buhari ad that NTA rejected This was just an independent video from a Buhari fan who added pictures and hijacked Omolara's independently written song, Transformation to make the You Tube clip. Here is Omolara's song, "Transformation." I'm sure the person didn't even take permission from her. What if Omolara doesn't support BB? Now you are all making her beautiful non partisan song the BB campaign anthem How will we fix Nigeria if you can not even credit someone for their work ? ![]() Transformation by Omolara - INDEPENDENTLY RECORDED SONG NOT BB AD PLEASE!!! The Nigerian-born performer Emmanuel Uwechue, a k a Hao Ge, has risen to stardom singing in Mandarin Chinese. Watch two videos on him here… http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/03/16/meet-nigerian-born-singer-emmanuel-uwechue-chinas-rising-pop-star-2/ Profile New York Times Hao Ge (pronounced How Guh) is perhaps China’s most unlikely pop star: he is Nigerian, and he sings in Mandarin. His real name is Emmanuel Uwechue, though he is better known by his stage name, which sounds like the words for “good song” in Chinese. Mr. Uwechue, 33, has developed quite a fan base, particularly among the children and middle-aged women who watch “Xin Guang Da Dao,” the “American Idol” knockoff show, where he first gained notice a few years after his arrival here almost a decade ago. He has performed alongside a host of Chinese superstars — including Sun Nan, Na Ying and Han Hong — and has been enthusiastically embraced by the Chinese media. “The African Who Searches for His Dream in China,” read the headline atop a 2006 article about Mr. Uwechue on QQ.com, a popular social networking site here. Articles by the state-run Xinhua news agency and in the Web-based magazine Sina Entertainment, as well as a television documentary, have similarly chronicled his unusual story. Mr. Uwechue even appears on bus ads: “Good Song Comes From Good Wine,” reads an advertisement for the Guan Gong Fang company, which signed him to represent its brand of wine. “He’s good — he’s not just another foreigner who got on TV because he could speak and sing in Chinese,” said Yu Na, 40, who lives in northwest Beijing, adding that she likes to “jump up and down” to Mr. Uwechue’s more upbeat songs; many of them are soul-infused versions of classic Chinese love songs, with faster rhythms. Mr. Uwechue is not the first foreigner to have made a name for himself in China, but he is the first African to have reached widespread success here. Some music industry experts in China credit part of his fame to the close economic and cultural ties — including friendship and exchange programs and other joint ventures — that have long existed between China and some African countries. In a recently televised public performance, Mr. Uwechue dressed up as an oil rig worker and sang alongside a Chinese fellow laborer. http://www.cp-africa.com/2011/03/16/meet-nigerian-born-singer-emmanuel-uwechue-chinas-rising-pop-star-2/ |
