The observation of the South East governors on the deteriorating condition of Enugu Airport is quite alarming. It is not surprising that such a damning verdict came from them. As regular users of the airport, they should be in a better position to know when things are no longer in order. We commend their forthrightness in drawing public attention to the worsening condition of the airport and the need for government’s urgent intervention. The poor state of Enugu Airport and indeed some of the nation’s airports is not in dispute.

We recall that under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Enugu Airport was among those that received infrastructural facelift. Since then, not much has been done in that direction. The latest haphazard rehabilitation of the airport might have been responsible for its further deterioration. The governors’ appeal to the Federal Government to rehabilitate the airport is in order and the government should listen to them.

Since the aviation industry is known for its strict adherence to international best practices, government must ensure that the deteriorating facilities at Enugu Airport are fixed forthwith. The stakes in the industry are very high and there is no margin for error. These are issues that concern safety of air travelers.

The nation can earn much in foreign exchange if its aviation sector functions optimally. Since airports are usually the gateways to any country, the government should remodel our airports in order to compete with the best in the world. The state of a nation’s airports can boost its tourism and attraction of direct foreign investments. Ethiopia is a good example of an African country that has so much developed the aviation industry to the admiration of the world. It is worth pointing out that some viable airports in Europe and the United States command better economies more than some African countries.


What the Enugu Airport needs now is a comprehensive repair of its facilities. We strongly believe that the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, should make a difference. The rehabilitation of the nation’s aviation facilities must be undertaken in phases, with the international airports given priority. The Enugu Airport, together with those in Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano fall into this category. Many of these airports still lack basic facilities like adequate runways, tarmacs and lighting systems as was highlighted by the South East governors. The Abuja Airport had to be shutdown not too long ago to undertake a rehabilitation of its runway. Work on the proposed second runway is yet to commence.

Government must show commitment and provide the enabling environment for other stakeholders to operate maximally in the aviation industry. The frequent policy somersaults, backed by a lack of honesty of purpose, have terribly undermined our aviation sector over the years. It must address the rot in the sector.

Government must repair the facilities at the airport and be mindful of the widely held perception in the South East of a deliberate policy to neglect the zone in terms of infrastructure and do something positive to change the story. We welcome the reported Federal Government’s plans to carry out a comprehensive rehabilitation of the runway of Enugu Airport and urge it to do so without further delay.

The Ekiti State Police Command yesterday, appealed to medical doctors operating in the state to save the lives of victims with gunshot injuries by treating them without its authorisation.

The police however, directed the doctors to immediately report such incident to the police after the victim must have been attended to as stated under Section 4 of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provisions Act, 1984. The command’s Police Commissioner, Mr Bello Ahmed, who stated this in a statement issued in Ado Ekiti, said this was to guide against the death of innocent Nigerians who fall victim of robbery and other vices.

According to the statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, Caleb Ikechukwu, the police boss stated that the section provides that offences relating to sheltering and treating an armed robbers without police clearance. “It shall be an offence punishable under this act for any person to knowingly house, shelter or give quarters to any person who has committed an offence under sections 1(2) of this Act. “It shall be the duty of any person, hospital or clinic that admits, treats or administers any drug to any person suspected of having bullet wounds to immediately report the matter to the police. “Any person, hospital or clinic, which fails to report as stipulated in subsection 2 of this section, shall be guilty of an offence,” it stated. He said anyone guilty of the aforementioned offence shall be liable to five years imprisonment or payment of N10, 000 fine.

The police boss expressed regret about how those shot by armed robbers while performing their legitimate duties were allowed to die under the pretext that they have not received police clearance. Ahmed appealed to the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to urge its members to adhere strictly to the new directive in order to save the lives of the people. “It is our duty to save the lives of Nigerians and to ensure that faces of criminals are exposed. So the command, therefore, calls on all hospitals and clinics, to strictly adhere to this directive.”

Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh, and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, yesterday took the campaign against human trafficking to students of the University of Abuja.

The campaign which was well-attended by several other celebrities aimed at increasing the conversation around the menace especially among students of the institution. Speaking to newsmen on the sidelines of the campaign, the Director-General of NAPTIP, Julie Donli-Okah, said the event created an opportunity for the agency to engage directly with the undergraduates on the issue of trafficking in persons. According to her, a lot of youths have fallen victims in the past to human traffickers who exploited their ignorance on the issue. Donli-Okah, represented by the Director Public Education, Mr Arinze Orakwue, said: “The Tonto Dikeh Foundation has ushered a very important week for the commemoration of the 2018 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. The actress has provided platform for us to speak to one of the largest groups we are targeting. “Basically, the aim of the campaign is to raise voices and increase the conversation around human trafficking which is a clear and present danger affecting our best and brightest minds, the youths. “The plan we have is to continue to push the frontiers of the conversation around human trafficking because, till today, a lot of youths are acting out of ignorance. That’s why we are asking the whole society to get involved in this matter.

” In her remarks, Tonto Dikeh explained that she chose, as NAPTIP’s national ambassador, to focus her energy on undergraduates because it has been observed that most victims were unemployed fresh graduates who were enticed with prospects of securing high-paying jobs overseas. She said: “We chose to focus on the undergraduates because human traffickers exploit the unemployment situation in the country to lure youths who are fresh out of school with job offers overseas. “So, we have to educate them even before they leave school and also tell them about the pains, the dangers and the negative effects of human trafficking on our society and country at large. Some people are ignorant and that’s why they were trafficked in the first place. “We are also working closely with the student unions to set-up a NAPTIP club on campus to ensure that the campaign is sustained beyond this event. “We want to drive the message against human trafficking to the streets, homes, communities as well as nooks and cranny of Nigeria.” Other celebrities who accompanied the popular actress to the campus campaign include: Toyin Abraham, Bobrisky, Styl Plus, Halima Abubakar among others.

The house of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, was this morning besieged by men of the Nigeria Police Force.

The siege on the Senate President's house, it was gathered, was carried out to prevent him from appearing before the police following a summons on him to so do.

Saraki was invited yesterday to answer to allegations against him in connection to the Offa robbery which claimed the lives of scores.

In a related development, the residence of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, is presently under siege by operatives of the Department of State Service and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The operatives stormed the residence of the Deputy Senate President during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Confirming the siege on Ekweremadu's house, his Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, in a telephone conversation said "I can tell you this is true.

"The house of the DSP is presently surrounded by DSS, and EFCC operatives."

A Zimbabwean man’s attempt to poison his three children backfired and he has been charged to court on Wednesday on three counts of attempted murder.

iHarare reports that,prosecutor, Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa reported that on July 11 in Dzavara Village under Chief Chinamora, the man had a domestic dispute with his father and brother.

As a result, on July 12, he reportedly took his three children aged 14, 9 and 5 to the shops. While there, he allegedly bought two 300mls bottles of Coca-Cola and termic poison.

The man reportedly proceeded to mix the poison with the drink and drank it after instructing his three children to drink as well.

The offence was discovered when at night the children and the man became ill and were rushed to Makumbe Hospital where they were treated and discharged.

The victims sustained internal injuries as a result of the poison. The matter was reported to the police, leading to the man’s arrest.
Court magistrate, Mr Milton Serima denied him bail and remanded him in jail till July 31.

Cameroon has arrested four soldiers suspected of shooting dead two women and two children in the country’s far north where its army is battling jihadist group Boko Haram, two security sources told Reuters.

A video of the incident, which went viral on Twitter since it emerged on July 13, has provoked international outcry.

Government spokesman Issa Tchiroma Bakary initially described the footage as “fake news” and said that the men in the footage, who were wearing military fatigues, did not appear to be Cameroonian soldiers.

However, he said the government would open an investigation.

“Four soldiers were arrested on Sunday. They are suspected of being the authors of the executions in the video,” said an army officer in Cameroon’s Far North region near the border with Nigeria.

A second security source said that three of the soldiers had been transferred to the capital Yaounde whilethe fourth was still being held in Maroua, the capital of the Far North.

Spokesmen for the army and the government did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

The shaky footage shows two women, one with an infant strapped to her back, being led across a patch of dusty scrubland by a group of uniformed men, who accused them of belonging to the Nigerian militant group, Boko Haram.

The women, silent throughout the ordeal, were blindfolded and told to sit down alongside their children.

Moments later, two men step back, level their rifles and fired series of shots.

Amnesty International said it had gathered credible evidence that the men in the video were indeed Cameroonian soldiers based on an analysis of their weapons, speech and uniforms.

A Consultant Gynaecologist and fertility expert, Dr Ibrahim Wada, on Wednesday advised career-minded couples to preserve their sperms and eggs to avoid losing out on parenthood.

According to him, fertility preservation can also be useful for couples who want to postpone having children for medical reasons such as treatment of cancer or ovarian cysts.

Wada, who is also the Founder, Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He said as many women in society were increasingly becoming household heads and men engaging in high professions, fertility preservation would be a solution.

Wada defined fertility preservation, also known as `cryopreservation’ as the storage of gamete embryos such as sperms in males or eggs in females for future child-bearing.


He explained that the preservation technique could be achieved by cooling the temperature of the sperms and eggs as well as cells and tissues susceptible to damages caused by chemicals and radiation overtime.

The fertility expert said that sperms and eggs could be frozen prior to radiotherapy, chemotherapy and extensive surgeries.

“The mammalian embryo was first successfully cryopreserved in 1972 and the first reported pregnancy from frozen embryos was in 1983.

“At Nisa Premier Hospital, the first pregnancy from frozen embryos was in 2001.

“We encourage early marriage and early pregnancy, especially for women; also good social and health habit, prevention of infection, alcoholism and smoking can help prevent infertility.

“However, if time is a challenge, then, preservation should be considered,’’ he said.


Wada said that sperms were produced in the testes and millions of new sperms were continuously being produced daily, while in females the ovaries produce eggs at either sides of the womb.

He said that the uterus was the organ where conception occurs, union of an egg and sperm cells; hence, there were various factors responsible for the inability of couples to conceive and bear children.

“In men, it can be the sperm quality, infection, injury, aging or impotency, while in women ovulation problems can be caused by aging, egg quality, and blocked tubes, among others.

“As people grow older, there can be various impediments to one’s fertility such as smoking, alcoholism, drugs and high risk occupation which can also account for decline in sperm count,’’ Wada said.

The recovery of two bodies of police officers killed by suspected bandits on Monday in the Birnin-Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State sparked protest in the state capital on Tuesday.

The incident forced policemen to protest the continued loss of lives of personnel in the hands of bandits.


It was gathered that the policemen brought in the bodies of their colleagues that were killed by the suspected bandits.

The protesting policemen shot into the air several times and in the process, a stray bullet hit a widow and she was pronounced dead.

Our correspondent learnt that the incident that happened at the police headquarters saw passersby running helter-skelter for their dear lives.

An insider added that the police officers that brought in the recovered bodies, were angered that their allowances had not been paid for some time, hence, the protest.

A statement by the police in the state confirmed the incident.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mukhtar Aliyu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, two police officers were ambushed and killed by unidentified gunmen.

He also confirmed that two policemen were killed but was silenced on the protest.


The statement said, “the Kaduna State Police Command wishes to categorically state that, on 16/07/2018 at about 1830hrs, a team of police officers on special duty, while on routine patrol at Tabanni Village along Birnin-Gwari – Funtua Road, were ambushed and attacked by unidentified armed men.


“The police team engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and at the end, two of the unidentified gunmen were killed and one AK-47 rifle was recovered. Unfortunately, two police officers lost their lives in the incident. However, the situation has been promptly brought under control.”

A generator repairer, Ajibike Oyekan, has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly sexually molesting a seven-year-old and six-year-old pupil in Ogun State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the 30-year-old suspect allegedly lured the pupils into his house with gifts whenever they were coming back from school.


It was also learnt that when the victims were in the suspect’s house, he allegedly had sex with one of them, which often time made them to get home late.

Our correspondent gathered that the victims’ parents had gone to the school to complain about the time their children got home.

The teacher was said to have questioned the pupils and they reportedly said they usually stopped at Oyekan’s place.

Further questioning revealed that Oyekan had allegedly been sexually abusing the pupils and this prompted the parents to report at the Sagamu Police Division.

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the parents reported the case to the police after they discovered that the suspect had been sexually abusing their children.

Oyeyemi said, “The name of the suspect that alleged to have sexually abused two female pupils is Ajibike Oyekan, a 30-year-old generator repairer.

“The two victims have been taken to the General Hospital, Sagamu, Ogun State. The hospital report confirmed that the hymen of the seven-year-old girl is no longer there, while the six-year-old girl had no penetration.

“The case has been transferred to Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labor Unit in Abeokuta.”



Oyeyemi advised parents to watch their children and stop sending them on errands at odd hours.

He also urged parents to develop cordial relations with their children so that they could be free to share secrets with them.

He said, “The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Hammed Iliyasu, also warned parents to take good care of their kids, especially the female ones. Parents are so careless that they would send their children on errand in the night. Some parents will even leave their children in the care of just anybody; anything can happen in such a situation.

“Parents also need to be friendly with their children so that when anything happens, the children would be able to confide in them.”

Actor and producer, Dele Odule, has admonished young Nigerians to be weary of the dangers posed by the social media, stating that without caution, the platform could destroy a lot of people.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, the respected actor said that while the social media has helped the society to develop in many aspects, it has contributed to the loss of morals and values in several parts of the country today.

According to him, the situation has resulted in a lot of people losing sense of their cultural values and imbibing all sorts of alien behaviours that are now threatening the sanity of the society.

“My worry is that a lot of people are not making appropriate use of the social media. In instances that they are supposed to hide their heads, they expose themselves unnecessarily all in the name of posting certain things on the social media.


“People have forgotten our culture; they are indulging in practices that our society ordinarily does not accept all in the name of civilisation and trying to follow trends in the Western world.

“Though the social media will not expose an individual on its own, it is what such persons put out there that will expose and endanger them. This technology and innovation have been abused by a lot of people in Nigeria,” he said.

But despite that hard stance, the celebrated movie practitioner also had positive thoughts about the social media. Odule said that the entertainment industry has benefitted immensely from the creation and usefulness of the social media to continue on the path of development.

According to him, the industry in Nigeria has continued to enjoy global prominence with much of that credit going to this innovation in recent times.

“Social media has been very good to the entertainment industry in Nigeria.

“As a result of piracy, many producers have gone online so that they can get the money they have invested in a particular production.

“A lot of young guys in the sector have continued to make names for themselves by leveraging on the power of the social media to bring their ideas and concepts to the front burner,” he said.

THe name Port Harcourt represents many things to diverse individuals. While to some it is no more than another urban centre in Nigeria, to others, it is the land where ‘milk’ and ‘honey’ flows. The capital of one of the country’s largest oil-producing states, the town fondly dubbed ‘Garden City’ by its teeming admirers, is not only revered by many within and outside it but also regarded as a place where dreams are lived. Housing nationals of different nations drawn into it by its oil wealth, the city is a melting pot of culture, lifestyle and a thriving leisure industry anchored on diverse forms of entertainment. It is one of the few cities that never sleep in Nigeria.

While ‘joints’, hotels and spots where women – young and old – in the business of servicing men in need of steamy sex are in abundant supply across the city like in many urban districts around the country, ladies in need of male company in this regard have had to rely on their seductive instincts to either ‘trap’ one or attend to such needs through other means. However, all of that changed recently with an all-male brothel in the city where Hot women can satisfy their urge for a fee.



Tucked in the heart of one of Port Harcourt’s most serene and reserved neighbourhoods – Government Residential Area – the coded hangout is the new playground of rich and lonely women in need of ‘quality’ male companion for a short period. Though unknown when the ‘hot’ spot began operations, our correspondent, during a visit to the area recently, discovered that the place is less than three months old in business. The one storey building with an expansive bar at its back, sits in between plush houses on teh major road, making it difficult for passersby to suspect anything sinister while around the place. Beyond a small wooden board with the drawing of a man and woman holding hands while dancing, there is nothing to suggest that this ‘special playground’ for ‘big’ women is what it actually is.

After being tipped by a source of the activities of the brothel, our correspondent had a difficult task locating the place especially with its discreet nature adding to the issue. Guarded by a few security men at the entrance, it is an entirely different picture when one finally makes his way into the place. Operated by a handful of young men, about five, with well-trimmed bodies and biceps, the bar area is where most potential clients sit and conclude any deal of their choice. At a corner of the section was seated a woman, who appears to be the manager of the place when our correspondent and a female friend, who pretended to be a prospective client, visited. The young male workers could be seen taking orders from her before reporting back to her at intervals. On approaching one of the young men how the place operates and what it would entail if she wanted any of them to ‘service’ her, the lady was directed to a woman positioned a few metres away, who later introduced herself as Patty.

Pretending to be making enquiries on behalf of her female boss, the lady said, “My madam wants a clean and neat guy to keep her company. Is it possible to get one here?” While responding to the question, Patty went further to roll out their array of services and how they have helped satisfy the needs of many of Port Harcourt’s ‘big’ and ‘lonely’ women.

“While others mainly supply women for the satisfaction of men, we do the reverse,” she began while flashing a warm grin as if to reassure the visitor that they had everything under firm control. “Whichever specification of men you need to make you happy in bed, we have them. Communication on the type of man needed and other issues like payment is always discreet. Everything is done through the telephone while the client does not necessarily need to come to this place.

“As part of our mode of operation, we do not give out rooms here for clients to be attended to; we run a ‘takeaway’ service, so they are expected to meet at a hotel of choice of the customer.

“Our clients need not be scared about the possibility of being blackmailed because all our guys are well-trained and are not allowed to communicate directly with the women needing their services. They are not also availed of the identity or contact number of the client, so the chance of such happening is very remote.

“The type of service to be rendered by our guys depends on how much the client can afford. Our charges are reasonable and negotiable but the standard fee for an entire night service is N40, 000.

“Before any client pays, she must have selected from a number of photos of our guys that we send through the Internet. It is after the person indicates interest in one that we proceed with payment and other things,” she said.



While quietly seated as the interaction went on, our correspondent observed a few more young men like the ones earlier spotted, walk into the bar, taking up normal roles in the place. Luckily enough, one of the guys had been seen before by our correspondent inside town, close to a tertiary institution. On exchanging pleasantries and asked if he had completed his National Youth Service Corps Programme, the stunned young man, giggled before saying “I am in my final year now, I’ll graduate next year.” Efforts to engage him further in discussion proved a tough nut to crack as he soon disappeared into a restricted section marked “Staff only” and barely came around the area our correspondent was seated for the rest of the evening.

In the process of assuring the young lady, whom our correspondent took along during the visit, that all the guys were medically-certified and free of any transmittable disease, Patty indeed confirmed that undergraduates made up a large chunk of their male sex workers that help bring happiness to many of the city’s rich and Hot females.

“We have a guy here now; he is very clean but not as tall as you want. He is a university student and very good in bed,” she said with a sense of pride. “There is another one around now too, he is a graduate. I know them very well. They all earn good money for their performances.

“We usually run medical tests on them to make sure that they are free of any disease, especially HIV/AIDS. But if the client wants an additional test, she will pay for such,” she added.

When asked by the lady pretending to be negotiating on behalf of her boss on how many guys they have working for them and if they could supply as many as 20 at a time, Patty, perhaps tantalised by the huge amount about to be dropped into the company’s account and her potential commission, chuckled a bit before asking to quickly make clarifications with a senior colleague at the place. Dashing back almost immediately, the excited woman made all sorts of declarations.

“I just spoke with our director who is abroad through a senior colleague, she said there are enough guys for the task and that as many as could be needed would be made available on request.

“I want you to come through the company so that I will not get myself into trouble. She (director) will be the person that will give you the persons that you want no matter how many of them you need. She is not in the country; she is overseas but knows how to handle everything from there because she knows everything we do here. If she knows you are coming from my side, she will not bill you too much,” she said.

While revealing that only graduates were employed permanently by the management of the place and that those still in school are enrolled on part-time basis, Patty revealed that their director sometimes ‘organises’ pretty young women for men, who could afford their charges. She further disclosed that gay men needing male company have also been patronising them.

“Yes, even the other guys (gays) have been coming too,” she said. “We have one or two who can attend to their needs for the right price. We are here to make everyone happy,” she added.

When asked on the criteria used in determining how good a young man is before enrolling him into their service and on the number of guys still on their waiting list, Patty admitted that she had no idea, preferring instead to allow the potential customer to take on her boss on that. Interestingly, when the woman based in the United Kingdom finally responded to an email sent to her by our correspondent, it was discovered that the array of ‘bedroom’ services the hangout offers goes beyond what was initially imagined.

A 23-year-old jobless uncle, Everness Onyebuchi, who allegedly defiled his eight-year-old niece, was on Thursday remanded at Kirikiri Prison by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The Magistrate, Mrs B.O Osunsanmi, who refused to take the plea of the accused, ordered that he should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

“Based on the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. Bail will be the discretion of the court.


“Casefile should be documented and sent to the office of the DPP for advice,’’ she said.

Onyebuchi, who resides with the girl’s parents at Oshodi, Lagos, is being tried for defilement.


The Prosecutor, ASP Ezekiel Ayorinde, told the court that accused committed the offence in May at the girl parents’ residence.

He said that the accused severally had canal knowledge of his niece.

“The accused had sexual intercourse with the girl on several occasions,’’ Ayorinde said.

The prosecutor said that the father of the girl accommodated the accused when he needed a place to stay.


“The accused started sleeping with her not long after he moved into the girl parents’ house due to lack of accommodation.

“The housekeeper, who noticed changes in the girl’s behaviour and body, informed her parents.

“The girl’s parents interrogated her and she told them what her uncle used to do to her when nobody was at home.


“The case was reported and the accused was arrested,’’ the prosecutor said.

The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates life imprisonment for defilement.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 13.

In his tweets @jassjegs, the SARS officers who arrested his cousin alleged that he was a yahoo boy, only to change the story by accusing the deceased of a being a cultist. However after the mother of the deceased couldn’t pay the 60K bail for the release of her child, the soldier alleged that his cousin was tortured to death.

A 50-year-old man has been arrested by the Katsina Police Command for alleged gun-running.

Safiyanu Amadu of Barbelu village in the Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State was alleged to be a notorious gunrunner who supplied arms and ammunition to cattle rustlers, kidnappers and armed robbers hiding in Rugu forest in the Safana Local Government Area of the state.

The spokesman for the Katsina State Police command, Gambo Isah, confirmed the arrest, revealing that Amadu was arrested on Monday in the forest.

Two locally-made revolver pistols and 7.62MM ammunition of AK 47 rifle were allegedly recovered from him.

Isah said, “Based on a tip-off, the command succeeded in arresting a notorious gun- runner supplying arms and ammunition to cattle rustlers, kidnappers and armed robbers hiding at Rugu forest, Safana LGA of Katsina State.

“Nemesis caught up with the suspect, one Safiyanu Amadu, aged 50years of Barbelu village, in the Bakori LGA of Katsina State when he was chased and arrested deep inside Rugu forest and two locally-made revolver pistols and 7.62mm life ammunition of Ak.47 rifle were recovered from him.

“Suspect has confessed that he intends selling same to cattle rustlers inside the forest. He is assisting the police in investigation.”

Meanwhile, the command has also arrested a nine-member armed robbery-cum-kidnap syndicate.

The command spokesman said in a statement made available to Northern City News in Katsina that the suspects were nabbed at Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State on a tip-off.

a 64-year-old man, has reportedly killed his grandson, Seun Fasoyin, at Agric Settlement, Ile-Oluji, headquarters of Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo Local Government Area of Ondo state.

It was learnt that Gabriel shot the boy with a dane gun on Wednesday under the influence of alcohol.

The grandfather, who was said to be fond of getting drunk, has been arrested by the State Police Command.


The corpse of the deceased has been deposited at an undisclosed morgue.

A source told INDEPENDENT that the suspect was drunk on the day he killed his grandson and was locked inside a room in order to avoid embarrassing the family.

“The man was fond of drinking too much of alcohol and his family members were not happy with the habit because he always messed himself up whenever he drank.

“At times, he would drink, get unconscious and start urinating all over his body. The family members were not happy with his drinking habit and they have made several efforts to change him but not successful.

“On that day, he had drunk as usual. So, in order not to embarrass the family again, he was locked up in a room so that he could sleep. But he did not.

“As Seun, his grandson, was trying to lock the room with a key, the man brought out a dane gun and shot the boy,” the source said.

Femi Joseph, the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), confirmed the incident.

Joseph said the suspect had been arrested and was currently in the police custody while investigation was ongoing.


He said: “I can confirm that the boy was shot by his grandfather. The man is already with us.

“The boy was shot at a close range and died on the spot. We have commenced investigation into the matter.”

The PPRO said the suspect would be arraigned in court after the completion of investigation.

The Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Eket, has sentenced one Okon Ebenge to death by hanging for killing his neighbour, Eteyen Ekong, over N80,000.

The presiding judge, Justice Nsemeke Daniel, on Wednesday passed the death sentence on Ebenge from Akpautong in the Esit Eket Local Government Area for conspiring with his son, Akaninyene, to kill his 37-year-old neighbour when he demanded the refund of N80,000.



Ekong, a native of Ntak Inyang in Esit Eket, was said to have given the convict N80,000 in 2013 to construct a container shade for his business.

It was learnt that the convict did not construct the container and refused to refund the money to Ebenge, prompting the deceased to go to Ebengevs house for his money on January 10, 2016, where he was beaten to death by the convict and his son, who escaped.

A medical report was said to have been admitted as exhibit before the court.

The report was said to have shown that father and son used machete and a pinch bar to hit the deceased, which caused fractured skull, leading to damage to his brain tissue.

A neighbor of the deceased, Abednego Owo, who was the third prosecution witness, told the court that he tried to rescue the victim, but was prevented by the convict and his son who threatened to kill anyone who entered their house.

In his judgement, Justice Daniel said, “The law is trite that when any person aids the commission of an offence by being at the scene not as an onlooker but with the purpose of assisting any other person in committing the offence; he is equally guilty of the offence as a principal.”

He ruled that the death of the deceased was accelerated by the convict who prevented sympathisers from taking the deceased to a hospital while he was still breathing even though unconscious.

“In my view, the specific act of using a machete to chase away people from entering his compound to rescue the victim was a manifestation of his intention to ensure that the man was dead,” Daniel said.



He sentenced Ebenge to death for murder on count one, while on count two, he was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment.
