No damage or injuries caused at Erbil airport, only one flight delayed; explosive UAV also falls near Kirkuk airport



ERBIL, Iraq — A drone was intercepted late on Thursday near Erbil airport, which houses US-led anti-jihadist coalition troops in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, Kurdish security forces said.

“At 21:58 (1858 GMT) an explosive-packed drone was downed near Erbil International Airport, without causing casualties or damage,” said the counterterrorism services of the Kurdistan region.

Erbil airport, which includes a military base of the international anti-jihadist coalition, was a frequent target in previous years for rocket and drone attacks.

A US defense official told AFP, “We are aware of an explosion from a UAV that occurred outside of the airbase in Erbil,” adding that the “incident is under investigation.”

All US personnel are accounted for and there were no injuries or damage to the base or US assets in the area,” he said.

Dana Tofeek, the airport’s interim director, told AFP that the facility is “safe,” adding that “only one flight was slightly delayed due to security measures.”

There has been no claim of responsibility for the drone attack.

In the past days, drone and rocket attacks have been reported in different parts of Iraq, including drones that landed in open spaces.


Earlier on Thursday, an explosive-packed drone fell near Kirkuk airport, which was struck on Monday by two rockets, a senior security official told AFP.

Kirkuk airport hosts Iraqi army units, federal police, and the Hashed al-Shaabi, a coalition of pro-Iran former paramilitary forces now integrated into the regular armed forces.

Early on Tuesday, Iraq’s anti-aircraft defense engaged at least one drone near the key refinery of Baiji in Salaheddin province.

Last week, hours before a ceasefire ended the 12-day Iran-Israel war, unidentified drones struck radar systems at two military bases in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

Iraq has long been a battleground of drone and rocket assaults and has proved a fertile ground for proxy wars.

The country has only recently regained a semblance of stability after decades of devastating conflicts and turmoil.

Unknown gunmen have reportedly carries out a deadly attack on the residence of former Minister of Sports, Mr. Damishi Sango.
Naija News reports that the former Minister’s home is located in Dalwal village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The deadly attack resulted in the death of a female relative and serious injury to his police escort.

According to Zagazola Makama, the incident occurred on July 2 at about 10:46 p.m., when the assailants reportedly stormed the compound and opened fire.

He stated that “During the attack, Inspector Walba Go Tom, a police officer from the Special Protection Unit Base 4, Makurdi, attached to the former minister, sustained gunshot wounds. His service rifle, an assault weapon with breach number, was taken away by the attackers.

“A female relative of the former minister was also hit by gunfire and later died while receiving treatment at Plateau Specialists Hospital in Jos. The police officer is currently hospitalized and responding to treatment.

Community sources say the assailants fled the scene before help could arrive.”

Naija News reports that Damishi Sango served as the Minister of Sports from 1999 to 2001 under the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Plateau State has been hit with major clashes and killings between communities and suspected herdsmen.

There was panic at the Alake Sports Complex, Ijeja, Abeokuta, one of the venues of the 2024 National Sports Festival, due to gas explosion, PUNCH Online reports.

Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred while a gas truck supplying the complex’s generating set suddenly caught fire, triggering panic among athletes and spectators nearby.

Emergency responders were quick to the ground, and the situation has been put under control.

ABEOKUTA — A female broadcast journalist, working at Ogun State Television, OGTV, in Abeokuta, Mrs Bukola Agbakaizu, on Monday slumped and died while preparing for afternoon shift duty at the state-owned television station.

Agbakaizu’s death was confirmed by the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, Mr Bunmi Adigun.
Agbakaizu, 52 years, was an ex-Officio of the council until her death

The statement read: “Agbakaizu, a dedicated staff member of Ogun State Television, tragically collapsed while preparing for afternoon shift, and despite efforts to revive her, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre.

“A versatile journalist and a passionate comrade, Bukola served as a former Vice Chairman of OGTV Chapel and was an invaluable member of the Wale Olanrewaju-led Executive.


“Her vibrant spirit and commitment to journalism will be sorely missed, leaving an irreplaceable void in our community.

“She is survived by her two children, her aged mother, and countless colleagues and friends who mourn her loss.”

Reacting to the death of one of her members, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, in Ogun State expressed shock and sorrow over her demise.

NAWOJ, in a statement by its Chairperson, Sekinat Salam, said Mrs Agbakaizu’s death was a rude shock to the chapter.


Salam, who described the late broadcast journalist as consummate and dedicated staff of the OGTV, said her death was painful and a bitter pill to swallow.

The statement reads: “Ogun NAWOJ received the news of Mrs Bukola Agbakaizu with a rude shock. Her death came when her experience and exemplary leadership would be needed by the association.


“As a dedicated member of NUJ, Ogun State Council and NAWOJ, Ogun State chapter, the mother of two will be sorely missed by all. Her compassion towards others, dedication, love and passion for the pen profession will always be remembered and cherished by all.

“Though, she passed on at the age of 52, her dedication to God and service to humanity will continue to keep her in our memories for a long time to come.

“We pray that her soul finds peace in the Lord, while the family he left behind will continue to be under protection of the God Almighty. Rest on, the amazon of our profession.”
