Autos / China Unveiled The World's Fastest Passenger Train. by Sheungbengar(m): 2:32pm On Sep 22, 2017
China has unveiled the world's fastest passenger train, which will travel at up to 350 kilometres per hour, shaving 30 minutes off the journey time from the Chinese capital, Beijing, to Shanghai.

The new service, called Fuxing, was launched in
Beijing on Thursday.
Despite the decreased travel time, experts are raising questions about the economic benefits of the new project.
"The purpose of raising the speed is mainly symbolic," Zhao Jian, economics professor and commentator, told Al Jazeera.
"The train is the fastest in the world, which implies the strength of Chinese train technology and science," he added.

According to estimates by international think tanks, it costs 90 percent more to build lines for trains that reach 350km/h than for ones that allow a speed of 250km/h.
Six years ago, there were questions over the future of the network following a high-speed rail crash caused by a signalling failure that killed 40 people near the city of Wenzhou.
It led the country to reduce its speed limit to 300km/h.

But, after Thursday's launch, China's government is now looking to build more bullet trains, both at home and abroad.
"Nobody predicted that the high-speed rail link between Beijing and Shanghai would be profitable when it was built," Zhang Xiaodong, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, told Al Jazeera.
"But after a seven to eight-year development, it gains, so it can work in other regions as well after eight to 10 years," he added.

Splashing rings

NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
The edges of Saturn's rings aren't all flat. This image shows the edge of Saturn's B ring, where towering structures up to 2.5 kilometres (1.6 miles) high cause shadows.
It's not entirely known what causes these particular structures, but Cassini scientists believe that small satellites or moonlets orbit past the edge of the ring and force it upwards in a sort of "splashing" effect.

We've seen similar structures occur in the wake of Daphnis in the A ring's Keeler Gap.
This phenomenon is only visible at the equinox, once every 15 years. This is because that is when the sun is directly shining on Saturn's equator, around which the rings run, which allows the shadows to stretch from the structures, making them visible.

Saturn's aurora

NASA/JPL/University of Arizona/University of Leicester
Earth isn't the only planet to experience southern and northern auroras, the phenomenon of lights in the sky.
Cassini took infrared images of Saturn's south pole in 2010 that for the first time allowed a study of Saturn's aurora .
Researchers found that aurora on Saturn occur in a similar way to how they occur on Earth - the planet's magnetosphere channels particles from the solar wind to the poles, where it interacts with plasma in the upper atmosphere to cause a light show.
But they also found Saturn's moons can play a role, too, causing electromagnetic waves when they move through Saturn's magnetosphere.

Daphnis making waves

NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
Saturn has several moons that orbit on the edges of its rings, shaping them as they go. These are called shepherd moons.
This is Daphnis, and it was discovered by the Cassini team. A slightly wobbly little moon, it orbits in the Keeler Gap, a 42-kilometre (26 mile) gap in Saturn's A ring. Because it is slightly
eccentric, its distance from Saturn varies by 9 kilometres (5.6 miles), and it moves up and down about 17 kilometres (10.5 miles).
This movement makes a wave pattern where Daphnis grazes the edges of the Keeler Gap, in both the horizontal and vertical directions, pulling at the edge of the ring with its gravity.

Spongy Hyperion

NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
Cassini made a close flyby of Hyperion in 2005, and captured a
close view of the irregular moon, showing crisp details on its strange surface.
It's strange, sponge-like appearance is unexplained, but researchers believe that it has an unusually low density, which makes it highly porous, with a weak surface gravity.
This would mean that the particles from impact tend not to stick around, which would preserve the shapes of Hyperion's craters instead of coating the moon.

At the centre of the hexagon surrounding Saturn's north pole is a turbulent permanent storm in a vortex.
The eye of the storm is 2,000 kilometres (1,250 miles) across, with cloud speeds of up to 150 metres per second (330 miles per hour).
Not much was known about this storm until the change of seasons during Cassini's mission, when the north pole was finally in the sunlight. This image , in false colour, was one of the first taken of the region, on 27 November 2012.
The red colour indicates lower altitude clouds, and the green indicates higher. You can see a black-and-white photo of the region here - looking no less turbulent.

NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
This striking image shows Saturn's rings, cutting across two of Saturn's more intriguing moons: Enceladus in the foreground, and Titan in the back, back-lit by the sun. Because of Titan's hazy atmosphere, light from the sun refracts through, creating an eclipse-like ring effect.

A triple crescent

NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
This image looks like something out of science fiction: Three of Saturn's moons in crescent.
Even though it looks minimal, there are interesting observations to be made. Titan, the largest moon in the image, appears fuzzy because of its hazy atmosphere, and the light wraps farther around the crescent because of the way the haze refracts light.
Rhea, the second-largest, by contrast shows its scarred icy surface. And even tiny Mimas looks rough because of its heavily cratered surface.

Saturn is so beautiful

NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute
Because Earth is in between Saturn and the sun, we'll never be able to see the night side of the ringed planet through a telescope. The only way we have currently is through images taken by spacecrafts.

While this image is utterly breathtaking, it gives us so much valuable information. When Saturn and its rings are lit from behind in this way, researchers can see details in the rings they can't see from the other side.

They were able to detect colour differences they hadn't seen before. Moreover, during this period of observation in 2006, Cassini found two new rings we hadn't known about before - the
Janus/Epimetheus ring and the Pallene ring.

Titan, one of Saturn's moons, is usually shrouded by its hazy atmosphere. Using its infrared instrument, Cassini was able to
take images to create a mosaic that shows the moon's surface in detail.
Although it gleams like an opal, these are not Titan's true colours, which tend towards brown and orange . The colours in this picture represent different near-infrared wavelengths.

The jets of Enceladus

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
Cassini made the incredible discovery of liquid water on two of Saturn's moons, Enceladus and Titan. Even more fascinating was Enceladus' jets .

Discovered on the ice moon in 2005, these jets are geysers of water vapour and ice particles from a liquid ocean beneath Enceladus' icy crust. Cassini actually flew through these jets and took measurements, finding molecular hydrogen .
This makes Enceladus a promising place to look for extraterrestrial life. Although there's little light there, researchers believe there may be hydrothermal vents - which in oceans on Earth, down in the dark, are teeming with life.

The Great Hexagon

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
Saturn's north pole is unlike any other in the solar system, characterised by an enormous permanent cloud pattern in the shape of a hexagon. The sides of this hexagon are 13,800 km (8600 miles) long, which is more than the diameter of Earth.
For the first half of Cassini's mission, the northern hemisphere was in winter, and the hexagon in shadow. But as the seasons turned, the hexagon became visible, allowing Cassini a good look - and it noted some interesting changes.
For instance, between 2012 and 2017, the hexagon changed colour, from blue to golden yellow. NASA researchers believe this may be caused by reactions between sunlight and particles in the atmosphere.

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
Tethys is the fifth-largest of Saturn's moons, and is composed almost entirely of ice, with just a small amount of rock.
Thanks to this composition, it's highly reflective, and shines brightly. In this image , it's lit not by sunlight, but Saturnshine, or sunlight reflected from Saturn.
Cassini has been able to provide a lot more information about Tethys' surface features, including colours at very small scales, that indicate materials not found elsewhere.

Saturn in summer

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
Saturn is a lot farther out from the sun than Earth, and takes a lot longer to complete an orbit than we do. One of Saturn's years takes 30 of Earth's years, which means proportionally long seasons, too. A season on Saturn lasts for over 7 years .
That means Cassini has been able to observe the seasons shift.
This image was taken in 2016, as Saturn moved into its solstice in May 2017. The northern hemisphere, pictured here in the sunlight, is in summer solstice, the southern hemisphere in winter.

These seasons do have an effect on Saturn's weather, and Cassini has been able to observe it in detail.

The Day the Earth Smiled

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute
On 19 July, 2013, Cassini and Saturn were lined up in such a way that this photo was possible. See that arrow, pointing to a
pale blue dot ? It looks like just another star, but it's not. That's Earth. It's us, seen from a distance of 1.44 billion kilometres (898 million miles) away.

The picture marks only the third time that Earth had been photographed from the outer solar system, and the first time that we knew ahead of time that the photo was being taken, so we could all look up and smile at the right time.
If you squint, you can't see anyone, don't be silly. But it allowed people to celebrate the wonder of space probes, science, and space.

Cassini has been out there hard at work for a long time. The Saturn probe departed Earth in 1997 and spent seven years speeding across the solar system to arrive in orbit around the ringed planet in 2004.

For over 13 years, it's been up there collecting data with an array of spectrometers, magnetometers, radars, and yes, cameras.
While all these types of data are valuable to scientists, it's the images Cassini has been sending back down to Earth that have given the world a much more intimate acquaintance with the beloved ringed planet.

And they're not just about showing us its pretty face, either. With the breathtaking photos Cassini has been taking so far from home, we've been learning new and fascinating things about Saturn, its moons and its rings.
Over the years, here are some of our favourite images of a world so alien to our Earthling experience.

Nairaland / General / Nigerian Army, UN Clash Over Invasion Of UN Building. by Sheungbengar(m): 7:10am On Aug 12, 2017
The United Nations and the Nigerian Army on Friday clashed over the invasion of a building occupied by the world body on Friday in Maiduguri , Borno State .

The Army , in a statement on Friday, defended its action, saying the action was part of counter-insurgency activities of its Theatre Command Operation Lafiya Dole . The statement was signed by the 7th Division spokesperson, Kingsley Samuel.
It stated that it had been conducting cordon and search operations in urban and rural areas within the state.
According to the Army , the clearance operations have been yielding successes.

The Army stated , “It has forced the Boko Haram terrorists to change tactics and resort to the employment of suicide bombers to target military locations and the populace. This necessitated the need to intensify cordon and search in the Maiduguri metropolis and environment.

“In the last one week , cordon and search operations were conducted in Jiddari – Polo, Muna Garage , and Jakana amongst several other areas. On August 10 , 2017, the Theatre Command received information from one of its credible sources that some high -value Boko Haram suspects had infiltrated into Pompomari Bypass.

“It , therefore , became expedient to take preemptive action by combing the general area through a cordon and search operation . The operation was successfully conducted as over 30 houses were searched .

“One of such included a property, which was said to be occupied by the United Nations staff members, although the property did not carry a UN designation .
“On the whole , the operation in the general area was successfully concluded but no arrest was made because the suspects were not found.”

Search without authorisation – UN
But the UN , in a statement said its Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria , Edward Kallon , stated that the search was without authorisation. The statement was signed by its Head of Communications, Samantha Newport.

Kallon expressed grave concern over the unauthorised search of the UN base for humanitarian workers in Maiduguri .
Kallon stated , “At circa 0500 hours today (Friday ), members of the Nigerian security forces entered the UN base for humanitarian workers in Maiduguri without authorisation. The security forces carried out a search of the tented camp and left the area at circa 0800 hours .

“The United Nations does not have any information at this time regarding the reason or motivations for the unauthorised search . The Humanitarian Coordinator is working closely with the Government of Nigeria to resolve this issue. The humanitarian crisis in Nigeria ’s North-East is one of the most severe in the world today .”

Kallon said that he was extremely concerned that the actions could be detrimental to the critical work that was being carried out every day to support the most vulnerable in the region, adding “I call upon the Government of Nigeria to provide clarification.

“The United Nations and more than 50 non -governmental humanitarian organisations are working in support of the Government of Nigeria to provide aid , including food , safe water and medicine , to some 6 .9 million people in need in the Northeast . ”

Army searching for Shekau in UN building – Report
An internal UN memo seen by the Agence France Presse
suggested that the Nigerian forces might have been searching for the leader of the jihadist Boko Haram group, Abubakar Shekau , after rumours spread locally that he was hiding in the compound known as the “Red Roof ”.

“Information about Shekau ’s presence in the Red Roof was already being spread yesterday ( Thursday) on the social media ,” said the document , apparently issued by the UN ’s Department of Safety.

“At about 2 a .m. early this morning , Nigerian Army troops in trucks are conducting… (a ) search on UN Red Roof Humanitarian camp and forced their way into the property.”
All UN staff members in Maiduguri were ordered to work from home by the note , which warned of demonstrations against the organisation and other foreign groups active in the area .
A UN source told AFP such searches were illegal under international law and risk raising suspicions about the organisation ’s work .

Nothing wrong with search – Tsav
A retired commissioner of police , Alhaji Abubakar Tsav, however, said there was nothing wrong with the search of the UN building by the military since it was geared towards the elimination of terrorism, a goal the world body was also working towards .

He observed that the military might not have informed the UN about its plans based on the time frame of the intelligence at its disposal.

Tsav said, “ There is nothing wrong with the military searching the UN property. If they suspected that someone is hiding in the building, they could search it and I don ’t think the UN should object since they are working towards the same goal of fighting insurgency.

“I don ’ t think the UN should be angry ( over the search) unless it is supporting the insurgents ,” the security expert added.
When contacted about the development and government’s position on it , the acting spokesperson, Ministry of Foreign Affairs , Mrs. Jane Adam , said, “ I will find out and get back to you. ”

She had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report. Later, she did not pick calls to her mobile phone .

It goes a long way though so once again we can expect Premier League clubs to throw around money this summer in pursuit of the league title, a European place or just being able to stay in the top flight.
Keep track of all the major transfers involving senior players in the Premier League (those making at least one club appearance), as Sportsmail brings you all the summer deals right the way through to transfer deadline day.

Crime / Badoo Storms Lagos Churches, Kills Babies, Mother by Sheungbengar(m): 7:53am On Jul 05, 2017
Suspected members of Badoo cult moved from their Ikorodu base on Tuesday , attacking two churches in Owode Onirin.

Two babies and a woman were killed in the latest attack.

This is just as five residents were crushed to death by a car in Isiwu , Ikorodu , while trying to administer jungle justice on a suspected Badoo member .
In Owode Onirin , the cult members were said to have attacked two orthodox churches – Cherubim and Seraphim Church , Crystal Church of Christ parish ; and Celestial Church of Christ , Orisun Ayomi parish – both on Anibaba Street, Weigh Bridge , Owode Onirin.

PUNCH Metro learnt that in the C&S church , the assailants killed a woman , identified simply as Iya Dabira and her nine -month- old baby , Dabira . A one year - old boy , Ayomide , was killed as well .
Ayomide ’s mother, who was also attacked , was said to be in a critical condition at the General Hospital, Ikorodu .
It was gathered that the victims had attended a vigil at the church . They were said to have slept off in the church after the prayer ended at 2 am.
The hoodlums reportedly scaled the church ’s fence , which bordered an uncompleted building and entered the house of God, smashing a big stone on the heads of the four victims .
A member of the church , Tayo Moses , said Dabira died on the spot .
“ The three others were admitted to the general hospital . Dabira ’s mother and Ayomide have been confirmed dead . The only survivor is still unconscious ,” he added .
Our correspondent learnt that the pastor in charge of the parish, Pastor Rotimi Ajidara, who lived in one of the apartments on the premises, became aware of the incident around 6 am and alerted other residents .
Our correspondent , who went round Ajidara’s church , observed footprints of the suspects on the fence and on the wet ground at the back of the fence.
A resident , Mrs . Tolulope Adelaja, said she participated in the vigil, adding that she retired to her apartment when the prayer ended around 2 am.

“ Around 6 am , the pastor alerted me to the incident . We took the victims in my car to Elam Hospital. A doctor at the hospital confirmed Dabira dead and referred others to the general hospital . It was a special vigil and the congregation was few ,” she added .

Another resident , Oluwadare Anibaba , noted that members found a stone beside the victims , adding that policemen from the Owode Onirin division took away the stone .
“ When the pastor alerted us, we rushed to the church and met the victims in a pool of blood ,” he added .
The pastor in charge of the second church attacked by the gang , Prophet Taiwo Adesanya, said the invaders stole some members’ property .

He noted that attacks by the gang might escalate to other parts of the state if stringent security measures were not taken by the government .
He said, “ We discovered in the morning that strangers had entered our church and stole mobile phones . Nobody was attacked , but we saw traces of engine oil on the ground .

“ We were wondering about who the robbers were when we saw a crowd in front of the nearby church . The Lagos State Government should take proactive measures against these criminals. The gang members are gradually moving away from Ikorodu .
“ They attacked Owode Onirin today, people in Mile 12, Agege, Ikeja and even Victoria Island should be on the alert. ”

The Chairman, Idera Tuntun Community Development Association, Owode Onirin, Ganiyu Ogundipe , urged the police to station a patrol van at a strategic junction so that they could quickly respond to distress calls .
A resident , Ayo Folarin , said the attack could have been averted if some landlords had not stopped a vigilance operation initiated by some youths on Monday.

He said, “ At about 12pm on Sunday, we accosted a boy who was wandering . When we queried him , he said he was going to visit his brother on Ketu Estate. We checked a small bag with him and found a handkerchief , lighter, kitchen knife and four ATM cards .

“ As we were questioning him , somebody came and said the boy was not a Badoo member and that we should release him . A few minutes after we released him , it occurred to us that we should have handed him over to the police. We looked everywhere, but we couldn’ t find him . We decided that we would guard the community at night .

“ In the evening , we knocked on the gates of all the residents to come out for the vigil. Only a landlord came out to encourage us. We made bonfires on the road and secured the community till dawn. In the morning (Monday), people blamed us for the bonfires and told us to stop the vigil .”

As the neighbourhood dicussed the attack, a man who identified himself as a mechanic was accosted by a mob.
He was accused of being a Badoo member and beaten to a pulp.
He was later rescued and handed over to the police at the Owode Onirin division .

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous- Cole, confirmed the attack, but said the command had a record of one casualty .
In Ikorodu , no fewer than five residents of Isiwu community were crushed to death by a car on Sunday on Itokin Road , Isiwu Junction, while trying to lynch a suspected member of the gang .
While two persons died on the spot , three others were said to have been confirmed dead in different hospitals .

Our correspondent gathered that many others were injured in the accident .
Policemen from the Imota division were said to have deposited the corpses in a mortuary .
A resident , who spoke on condition of anonymity, said a motorcyclist (okada rider ) in the community had raised the alarm that he was being attacked by a thief.
He said , “ The okada rider had picked the man along the road around 8 .30pm on Sunday . They were on Itokin Road , Isiwu , when the okada rider suddenly stopped , abandoned his motorcycle and started screaming , ‘thief , thief , thief ’. He said the man brought out a knife to stab him .

“ In a jiffy , a mob gathered . However, the story quickly changed as people started shouting , ‘ Badoo ’, which drew more crowds .
“ The man was taken to the expressway, close to a filling station in the community and they put tyres around his neck .

“ A motorist , who was speeding on the expressway, ran into the mob, killing two people on the spot , while many were seriously injured. ”
The resident said policemen from the Imota division were alerted to the incident .
A community leader, Chief Lateef Ogunbanwo, told PUNCH Metro that the death toll reached five on Tuesday as three other residents later died .
Ogunbanwo, who is the Lapini Awo Opa of Isiwu , said he believed that the Badoo members were land grabbers who had been terrorising the community for some time.
He said, “ Our community has been under siege for a long time. The ajagungbales (land grabbers ) have taken over our community and they invade our homes at will. Appeals in the form of letters and protests to the state secretariat, Alausa , Ikeja, have gone unheeded .
“ It is these people that became Badoo . They killed four people. When it became unbearable, traditionalists came together to pronounce curses on them .
“ When I also saw the suspect , I confirmed that he was indeed a Badoo member . When he was hacked with a cutlass, he was not hurt . I have been told that five people are now dead .”
The community leader said the suspect ’ s corpse was not removed from the road until late Monday, adding that there was tension in Isiwu .
The Commanding Officer of the Ikorodu North Neighbourhood Safety Corps , who did not want his name mentioned, said the case was not brought to his office.
A top government official , who resided in the area , said the tragedy could have been averted if the youths did not take the law into their own hands.
“ I don ’t know why they could not contact the police to handle the case . With what is going on now in Lagos State , many innocent people will lose their lives . The government must take immediate control of the situation ,” he said.
The official , who spoke on condition of anonymity , noted that although Isiwu hosted the headquarters of the Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area , it lacked police presence .
He explained that efforts to build a security post for operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the community were frustrated by some residents.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Famous- Cole , did not pick his calls and had yet to respond to a text message on the incident .
However, the command in a statement by the PPRO directed residents of Ikorodu to always move around with valid identity cards to avoid being restricted or arrested.
The statement read in part , “ The Lagos State Police Command will like to inform members of the public, especially residents of Ikorodu and environs that henceforth, everybody moving around that part of the state – residents , students or workers – should always have on them a valid form of identification.
“ This has become necessary because of the series of police operations lined up in the area by the command . The command is deeply concerned about the criminal activities in the area , which is not only unlawful , but also affecting the integrity of the state .”
