A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Adamawa State, Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has given directive to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on what should be done to the Resident Electoral Commissioner of Taraba State. Former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar Atiku, who is an elder statesman in a statement issued on Wednesday by his Media Office, urged INEC to remove the Taraba State REC, Alhaji Hamad Makama and replace him with someone else. READ ALSO: Atiku And Tinubu Meet Behind Closed Doors The Turaki Adamawa also called for the removal of security officials implicated in the conduct of last weekend’s governorship election in Taraba State. He said the indicted personnel should be replaced with new ones before the rerun election in the state. Atiku reportedly made the call while welcoming INEC’s decision to cancel the governorship election results in some local government areas of Taraba State and declare the outcome of last Saturday’s polls in the state inconclusive. The former vice-president reportedly agreed with the widespread reports of irregularities in some local governments of the state. “These irregularities included using armed personnel to intimidate voters. Elections should not be militarised. Nigeria is a democracy, not a dictatorship. Citizens should be able to go out and vote without fear of being threatened with the nozzle of a gun,” Atiku said. The APC chieftain listed Southern Taraba, specifically in Wukari, Takum, Kurmi and Donga local councils as the area were election violations were mostly perpetrated. Atiku revealed that thousands military troops were deployed in these areas and electoral officers were heavily compromised. READ ALSO: ‘I’m Overwhelmed With Emotion’ – Senator Alhassan “These people should not be allowed to go back during the rerun election. No troops should be allowed nearby,” Atiku said. Atiku urged the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, to redeploy the officials that were compromised with news hands from neighbouring Gombe, Bauchi and Adamawa states during the re-run polls. Meanwhile, APC in Taraba state had earlier alleged that the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Hamad Makama, deliberately refused to release results from certain polling unit. The development allegedly caused tension and anxiety in the state. A source close to the state’s APC governorship candidate, Aisha Jummai Al-Hassan alleged that the REC was paid the sum of one billion naira by the Peoples Democratic Party to rig the elections in their favor. |

Student creates a Batman outfit - and it works By Thomas Page, for CNN Updated 1352 GMT (2052 HKT) April 16, 2015 Story highlights 21-year-old student Jackson Gordon has designed and built a functional Batsuit Made with money raised on Kickstarter, the outfit has received a prestigious endorsement (CNN)— Jackson Gordon is no ordinary 21-year-old. By day he is an industrial design student at Philadelphia University, but Gordon has another side to him -- a side altogether darker, tougher and more enigmatic. Hanging in his workshop Gordon has a full suit of armor plating, cape and cowl -- matte black and built to stop a knife. Gordon has an alter ego: the Dark Knight himself, Batman. You might expect his origin story to be cloaked in mystery, but speaking to CNN Gordon is quick to explain how the transformation took place. Gordon says his calling came five years ago when he began experimenting with cosplay. "Previously I'd been involved with costume making... I'd made a version of the Batsuit from Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight Trilogy' and I really liked that suit," Gordon says. But, as elaborate as his design was, it lacked the functionality or the authenticity of the genuine article. "I was frustrated every time I wore it," Gordon explains. "It really limited my mobility and I didn't like that -- it didn't go with the character." Building the Batsuit In September 2014 he bit the bullet, deciding "to do another one that wouldn't inhibit my mobility and would actually provide protection and function more like Batman's actual suit." The Batsuit had to be strong -- tough enough to withstand the stab or slash of a knife, the impact of a punch or a baseball bat, but light and articulate enough to make it practical. Striking such a balance required expensive materials, and they didn't come cheap. Gordon therefore fired up a Kickstarter campaign . He "didn't really think anyone would fund it or even be interested in it" -- he raised $1,255 in 6 days. "It was a little surprising," Gordon demurs. Writing out his shopping list, it was important that "everywhere, even places without armor plating, had some sort of protection." Kevlar was sourced as the base fabric, making it "cut and slash resistant to bladed weapons, but breathable and wearable all day." Eschewing conventional materials, Gordon opted for a form of memory foam, built around key areas to "squish and compress," dissipating the impact of blows. After much experimenting with "polycarbonates and extruded PVC materials," ¼" Kydex (or ABS) plastic formed the tough armor plates, located on the torso, forearms and shins. Stab resistant, Gordon says "it can take anything but a gunshot." The cowl was more problematic, being "nearly impossible" to craft out of the same materials within the limits of his workshop. Gordon therefore took a mold of his head using Sintra plastic, "working on top of that with different sculpting clays and soft plastics to get it into a recognizable Batman shape." Using a two part box mold Gordon was able to create a "silicone jacket" of this, into which liquid polyurethane was poured, forming the final, "durable and functional" cowl. Expanding the franchise Gordon (who doesn't appear to be related to Gotham City's police commissioner, James Gordon) is also an expert in Shaolin Kung Fu: he is both brains and brawn, a cross between Bruce Wayne and Batsuit designer Lucius Fox from Nolan's Batman trilogy. Legendary, the production company behind the films, has taken note of his design and given it their seal of approval. The Batsuit has made appearances at conventions and proved a showstopper among his fellow students and the faculty. "People love the theatricality of it," its designer says. That the product so closely mimics DC's fantastical comic book creation has had resonance. He has already begun manufacturing the cowls for the public, with "fully adjustable" jackets going up for sale on his site Armatus Design "in the next couple of weeks." The jackets have received particular attention. Gordon has received "easily over 50 requests from people," and not just from the cosplay community. "They range from recreational use to martial artists... but also motorcycle and All Terrain Vehicle riders who want protective gear and prefer the look and functionality of [Gordon's] suit." Perhaps because of their versatility and the small matter of copyright issues, those that go on sale will not feature the iconic bat symbol. Gordon says his fledgling business will remain small whilst he's at University -- he has to finish he studies after all, and won't be using the project towards his degree credits. For now the Batsuit and Armatus Design will remain a one man operation: such is the life of a superhero.

Turkey’s Erdogan – ‘I condemn the pope’ over Armenia genocide comment REUTERS, 14/04 18:38 CET ISTANBUL (Reuters) – Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said he condemned Pope Francis on Tuesday for comments that the 1915 mass killing of Armenians was genocide and warned him not to make such a statement again. The pope became the first head of the Roman Catholic church to publicly call the killing of as many as 1.5 million Armenians “genocide” on Sunday, prompting a diplomatic row with Turkey, which summoned the Vatican’s envoy and recalled its own. Muslim Turkey agrees Christian Armenians were killed in clashes with Ottoman soldiers that began on April 15, 1915, when Armenians lived in the empire ruled by Istanbul, but denies hundreds of thousands were killed and that this amounted to genocide. “We will not allow historical incidents to be taken out of their genuine context and be used as a tool to campaign against our country,” Erdogan said in a speech to a business group. “I condemn the pope and would like to warn him not to make similar mistakes again.” While other Turkish politicians, and now Erdogan, have lashed out at the pope, some ordinary Turks have dismissed the row as empty politics and voiced a desire to leave history be. Erdogan’s comments are likely to put a focus on whether the United States, a traditional ally of NATO-member Turkey, will eventually use the term “genocide” for the mass killings. Unlike almost two dozen European and South American states that use the term, Washington avoids it and has warned legislators that Ankara could cut off military cooperation if they voted to adopt it. Pope Francis appeared to refer to his use of the term “genocide” on Monday, saying in a sermon that “today the Church’s message is one of the path of frankness, the path

Clinton's Secret Is Out - Now It's Open Season The Democrat will face an onslaught of attacks in this White House race, but there are risks for Republicans if they go too far. 05:07, UK, Tuesday 14 April 2015 Greg Milam US Correspondent Follow Greg One of the worst kept political secrets is out - now the hard work begins for Hillary Clinton. The former First Lady and Secretary of State has officially joined the race for the White House with pretty much no opposition from within the Democrats. But with official candidacy comes intense scrutiny - and her Republican opponents have been arming themselves for an 18-month assault on Mrs Clinton. Every candidate for the White House has to fight a two- track battle: trying to communicate their message to the country while fending off negative stories and smears. Will Bill Clinton be an ally or a liability in the coming campaign? Mrs Clinton faces an onslaught on a number of fronts: her use of a private email server while America's top diplomat, donations from foreign governments to the Clinton Foundation, her role in response to the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi, Libya, her close relationship with Wall Street. All of that - "scandals" that have filled hours of airtime - will become fodder for the attack ads in what will be probably the most expensive election in history. Video: Hillary Clinton In 90 Seconds But Mrs Clinton knows the American public also will have some substantial and relevant questions. She will tackle one of those head-on in the early days of her campaign: meeting voters in key states to counter the impression that she is aloof, secretive and out of touch with real Americans. For a woman who has spent decades in the Governor's mansion in Arkansas, the White House, the US senate and the State Department, she is the definition of a Washington insider. Making a connection with the ordinary folk is important. Her campaign will have learned the lessons from what Barack Obama's team did to them in 2008 and, as a result, social media outreach and fundraising will be front and centre. A more sensitive issue for 67-year-old Mrs Clinton will be her age and health. Republicans demonstrated when she was Secretary of State that they were not above questioning if she was physically fit for office after she suffered a fall and a concussion. But David Goodfriend, a former adviser in the Clinton White House, says Republicans need to be careful with how they attack. Video: Clinton Musical Goes Off-Broadway He told Sky News: "If past is prologue the Republicans will overplay their hand and attack her just a little too much and you will find American women rallying to her defence in overwhelming numbers and that will push her over the top." But Mrs Clinton knows her private life will become open season and that brings us to one of her campaign's greatest potential strengths: the formidable election powerhouse that is Bill Clinton. Her team knows they have to manage the former president carefully. Some of his pronouncements on Mr Obama in 2008 were unhelpful, to say the least, but he still connects with Americans like few other politicians. The polls show Mrs Clinton ahead of all of her possible Republican challengers. But the gap is closing and those Republicans will get match-fit in a bruising contest over the next 12 months. Though Mrs Clinton looks largely unchallenged for her party's nomination, she knows better than most that being a certainty can be a dangerous place.

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state has boasted that anyone who wants to impeach him must first face the herculean task of impeaching God before he can be removed as governor of the state. The Fayose said this at an audience participatory programme; “Meet Your Governor” aired on the State Television, EKTV, Ekiti Radio on Monday, April 6. READ ALSO: Buhari’s Victory: Asari Dokubo Receives New Warning Explaining why any impeachment proceedings against him will fail, he said : “I’m like Israel that is in the midst of enemies but will always prevail. Whoever wants to remove me will first have to impeach God. The governor, according to the Daily Post, also described those plotting his impeachment as the same enemies of Ekiti State that plotted his exit from office in 2006. He also alleged that he was been witch hunted for being loyal to President Jonathan. He said: “They are doing all these just to get at me because of my support for President Jonathan and I have no regret for supporting the president. Fayose who claimed that he hadn’t seen any impeachment notice, explained that Dr Adewale Omirin who was instituting the proceedings against him had been impeached as the speaker of the State House of Assembly. “Let me say it again, I have not been served any impeachment notice. The House of Assembly is also on recess and Dr Adewale Omirin is not the speaker of the State House of Assembly. READ ALSO: INEC Addressed Challenges With Card Readers “Omirin is in court, challenging his impeachment and he can’t be challenging his impeachment in court and at the same time laying claim to being Speaker” , he added Last week the 19 All Progressives Congress lawmakers in the Ekiti State House of Assembly began impeachment proceedings against Governor Ayodele Fayose. The embattled Speaker, Dr Adewale Omirin, has forwarded a notice of gross misconduct to the governor, which sources within the APC said was served on him during the week. But Fayose has describing the purported impeachment notice as the “joke of the century. |
On Thursday, April 2, it was announced that 17-year-old progeria victim Hayley Okines had passed away in East Sussex, England. The condition called; Hutchinson Gilford Progeria Syndrome, also known as HGPS or Progeria, causes children with it age up to 10 times faster than normal. Hayley's mother, Kerry Okines, posted the news on Facebook: "My baby girl has gone somewhere better. She took her last breath in my arms at 9.39 pm." Hayley - who BBC News say had the "body of a 104-year-old" - was being treated in the hospital for pneumonia, but she returned home shortly before she died. "She came home for an hour and she saw her puppies, little brother Louie and her sister Ruby," Hayley's father, Mark Okines , told BBC News on Friday, April 3. He added; "I think she wanted to come home to say goodbye to everybody," he continued. "I think she knew that yesterday was going to be the time." Children with progeria rarely live past the age of 14, often passing away from ailments that affect the elderly, such as heart disease and stroke. Hayley was told she would not live past the age of 13, but in 2007, the teenager began undergoing pioneering treatment at Boston Children's Hospital, US, as part of the first clinical trial for the condition. In September 2012, the trial was a success. In a statement following Hayley's death, the Progeria Research Foundation (PRF) praised the teenager for her contribution to progeria research: "The entire PRF community mourns the loss of one of our shining stars, Hayley Okines. Hayley was one of the first participants in the ongoing progeria clinical trials. Hayley was a pioneer - and one of the reasons that we now have the first treatment for progeria. Today we remember her tremendous courage and determination," the statement said. Hayley was an avid campaigner for progeria awareness, hailed locally and nationally as an inspiration for people with and without the condition. The teenager wrote two books detailing her experiences of living with progeria - " Old Before My Time " and " Young at Heart " - and took part in numerous interviews. The news of Hayley's death comes just 15 months after it was announced Sam Burns , a boy from Massachusetts, United States had died from progeria. He was 17 years old too. Progeria is caused by an abnormal protein in the LMNA gene, called progerin, which interferes with the production of lamin A - a protein that stabilizes a cell's nucleus.

A 56-year-old woman who was recently released by Boko Haram said that the Chibok girls abducted in April 2014 are being held in Gwoza town in Borno State. According to the International Center for Investigative Reporting, icirnigeria.org, Mbutu Papka was kidnapped in July, 2014 and held by the insurgents in the same location as the abducted Chibok girls. Reportedly, the abducted girls are being kept under very tight security in a house in Gwoza. Papka said that nobody was allowed near the fenced building where the abducted girls are being held under 24-hour security. “Even the heavily armed guards who keep watch over the girls round the clock are only allowed to go into the house to deliver food, water and other supplies to them,” she said. After Boko Haram attacked Gwoza on July 4, 2014, Mbutu Papka along with others was taken to Mdita, a remote village near the notorious Sambisa Forest, bordering Askira Uba, Damboa and Gwoza. The abductees reportedly were kept in Mdita for five months before being transferred to Gwoza, where they were held for three more months till Nigerian army released them on March 15. Though Papka has never seen the Chibok girls, she explained that people in the area pointed at the heavily guarded flat and said the girls were inside. “Because access to the house was restricted the girls apparently did their own cooking and chores by themselves,” she said “In the camp at Gwoza, there were clear demarcations between where people were kept. The Chibok girls, other captives and Boko Haram members and their family members all had their separate areas secured, though the security in the area where the girls are kept is visibly different and much tighter,” she added. READ ALSO: Boko Haram Releases New Audio, Announces Alliance With ISIS According to Papka, the conditions under which the captives in Gwoza were kept were fairly tolerable and far better than the first location, as there was water supply. “When we got to Gwoza, things changed because there were facilities there and the place was 10 times better than Mdita. We had a normal life in Gwoza, except the trauma of living in captivity. Whatever we wanted to eat, they were provided. They would bring water, firewood, etc., and leave them outside,” she explained. Mbutu Papka Speaking about living conditions at Mdita, she recalled that the place stank and maggots were everywhere because of lack of water. She also said that she met other abducted people including women and children, among whom were many under the age of seven. Because of the terrible conditions and absence of health care facilities in the camp, many people fell sick and some died. “There was a Redeemed Christian Church of God pastor who was killed during the attack on our village, and his wife was abducted with us. She died at Mdita due to the condition of the place and the death of her husband,” she told. According to Papka, she and the other women were not raped or assaulted, though she could not speak for the Chibok girls because nobody was allowed to see or interact with them. |

Atiku Abubakar, Endorsed President jonathan And Advices His Northern Brothers And Sisters. Please to all my Muslim brothers and fellow Northerners, let us not deceive ourselves and be in high hope, GEJ will win this election,. It’s very clear. When the voting starts things will be different from what we're seeing. Don’t go out to destroy thing when Buhari looses please. My vote and that of my entire extended family and people are for GEJ not because he has done what I expected or performed well but because Buhari is no fit to rule where we have someone like Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and others. Buhari will be worse than what we are facing now. Nigerians, we must not go back to former heads of state who have ruled and destroyed the progress and development of our future, always coming back to rule us again in a democracy era. Does it mean we civilians don’t have what it takes to rule? Please every Northerner should put sentiment aside and vote for GEJ. If not for this Boko Haram issues I don’t think GEJ has failed as people are claiming. Ask Buhari the origin of Boko Haram. He said he will make the Country ungovernable for Goodluck if he looses the election. If you say Goodluck Jonathan has failed, what do we then say about previous presidents that siphoned all our monies to foreign accounts? — |
