PoliticsTop Ten Things Wrong With Nigeria's New Old National Anthem-saharareports by ShoeGetSize(op): 2:22pm On Jun 03, 2024
How do I explain to my students that the government of the so-called giant of Africa has decided to run back to the vision of our country that a pampered British expatriate suggested for Nigerians as they prepared to leave?

As a teacher of Post-Colonial African History, nothing the Bola Tinubu government has ever done has embarrassed me as reverting to Nigeria's old national anthem. What will I tell my students when they come back in September? Should I tell them that sixty-four years after independence, 200 million Nigerians couldn't compose a national anthem of their own if they felt that the 1978 anthem was flawed and inadequate?

With what face will I teach them of what the Belgians did to Patrice Lumumba and the people of Congo, where over eight to sixteen million Africans died between 1885 - 1908, the atrocities the British committed in Kenya against freedom fighters and the Mau Mau, the British concentration camp during the Second Boer War in South Africa or the punitive Benin expedition of 1897 when the British used 1200 men to destroy the Benin Kingdom and loot their artifacts.

How do I explain to my students that the government of the so-called giant of Africa has decided to run back to the vision of our country that a pampered British expatriate suggested for Nigerians as they prepared to leave?

Here are my top ten things wrong with the new old national anthem.

1. A British woman named Lillian Jean Williams wrote the lyrics of Nigeria's new old National anthem. We have yet to start dealing with the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder of having our name, Nigeria, given to us by the girlfriend of colonialist Mr. Frederick Lugard; now we have to add Lillian Jean Williams' vision of Nigeria to our trauma. What could be more humiliating? It is like a woman agreeing to the name that her rapist, who got her pregnant, gave her child and singing the lullaby he wrote for the child. Tufiakwa!

2. The second line of the first stanza says Nigeria is our own native land. Is Nigeria really "our own dear native land?" Think about it. Do we, as native people in that land, feel we have the rights and privileges that natives should have in their lands? With so many of our native people now living in IDP camps, are we not heading to the same fate as native Americans now relegated to life in reservations? Governor Bala Muhammad and many like him have continued to insist that Nigeria is open to any Fulani from anywhere in the world who wants to come in and live in any forest in Nigeria. Over the last six decades, people like him have implemented that policy. So, is it still our dear native land or just for mouth? If it is our dear native land, how is it that 60 years later, we have not been able to feel free in any part of the land? Why are we hostile to each other in what is supposed to be our native land?

3. "Though tribe and tongue may differ..." What kind of educated illiterate still call themselves tribes in the 21st century? Most of the 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria are nations and not tribes. They were nations with their own rights before the British came. That distinction should have been clear to anyone who wants to be president of any African country. We cannot have a tribe of useless and poorly educated politicians who are ignorant of the power of words demean the about 250 nations that have existed as long as the Germans, the French, the English, and the Russians have by calling them tribes.

4. "...In brotherhood we stand." This was an admirable aspiration some 60 years ago. But we have gone in the opposite direction for so long that we have lost the right to mouth such expression without first reversing in actions fortified in law some of the policies that make such expression mere mockery of the words. What symbol of brotherhood still exists in our nation? Is it in having some brothers enter Unity Schools with a cut-off mark of 136 while others are admitted with a score of 4? What brotherhood is there with lopsided recruitment into the DSS and other sensitive agencies of government?

5. For Nigerians to all be proud to serve, as the anthem alluded to, there should be a level playing field. And that cannot happen until merit dethrones mediocrity. For all Nigerians to be proud to serve, the pay of the elected political class and their accomplices at the top echelon of the Civil Service must be reduced drastically to where it makes sense to say that we all are proud to serve. A state House of Assembly member should not be paid more than a general, a university professor, or a brain surgeon.

6. About calling Nigeria "our Sovereign Motherland." Should we not wait until we start acting like a sovereign nation? Can we make our pens and pencils? Can we refine our own crude oil? We do not make our own toothpicks. We run to Chatham House to have the colonialists vet and approve our politicians for us. Haba, where do we see the sovereignty in our motherland? At 60, shouldn't we have outgrown this illusion of grandeur?

7. "Our flag shall be our symbol/Where truth and justice reign..." For real? It's a beautifully crafted flag, I must say. So sophisticated and distinguished. Give me a break. And about that truth and justice... the truth about what? Our history? How can we have truth when we abhor transparency? And about justice. How many local government areas does Lagos have? How many does Kano have? Check the population of the two states and come back to me with a reasonable explanation.

8. "To hand over to our children/A banner without stain." This one makes me laugh. First of all, no country hands over banners without stains. So, we should scratch that aspiration. The British Union Jack is littered with stains from Australia to India to Kenya. The Star Spangled Banner is dotted with more stains than all its stars, from the massacre of Native Americans to the transatlantic slave trade to Hiroshima to Haiti to Afghanistan. And since 1960, we have handed Nigeria's banner full of stains to several generations of our children.

9. To beg God to help us build a nation where no man is oppressed could be an excellent request for a virgin nation. Sixty years later, we have done the very opposite. We have lived and relished a country where most men were oppressed to death. The stains of the massacres in Asaba, Odi, Zaki Biam, Lekki, and many others are not going to be bleached away in the next 1000 years. At this point, we should not make an insincere request like begging God to help us build a nation where no man is oppressed. We should not even pray for forgiveness of sins. Instead, we should seek severe penance. We should be rolling in the dust, gnashing our teeth, and making sacrifices to see if our sins can be forgiven.

10. Nigeria is blessed. We all can agree on that. So, there is no need for pleading and dreaming that Nigeria should be blessed. The question we should be asking ourselves is how did we turn Nigeria's blessings into curses. We need to know the answer to that if we want to be able to reverse the curses. Reverting to an old, discarded national anthem is a mere whitewash.

The Lillian Jean Williams' Nigeria National Anthem was a naive set of aspirations written by a guilty beneficiary whose exploitative people clobbered together a nation aimed at servicing their political and economic interests. It is not profoundly held aspirations of the Nigerian people who have matured and come into their own, have honestly looked at the situation they found themselves in, and have agreed to chart a new path. Nigerians returning to the old national anthem at 64 is like Bola Tinubu moving back to live in his father's house where he was born.

Sports21% Of Germans Say There Should Be More White Footballers In The National Team by ShoeGetSize(op): 1:52pm On Jun 03, 2024
German head coach Julian Nagelsmann has condemned as "racist" a recent survey that asked participants if they wanted to see more white players on the national football team.

The poll by the ARD public broadcaster said 21% of respondents agreed with the proposition.

"It is racist. I feel we need to wake up. Many people in Europe had to flee.. searching for a safe country," Nagelsmann said on Sunday.

The 36-year-old said he agreed with Germany midfielder Joshua Kimmich, who described the questionnaire as "racist" a day earlier.

“Josh [Kimmich] responded really well, with a very clear and thought-out statement,” Nagelsmann said at a briefing at his team's training base.
“I see this in exactly the same way. This question is insane.

“There are people in Europe who’ve had to flee because of war, economic factors, environmental disasters, people who simply want to be taken in.

"We have to ask what are we doing at the moment? We in Germany are doing very, very well, and when we say something like that, I think it’s crazy how we turn a blind eye and simply block out such things."
ARD - the German public broadcaster - said it had commissioned the survey to have measurable data, after a reporter working on a documentary on football and diversity was repeatedly asked about the make-up of the national team.

The poll was conducted among 1,304 randomly selected respondents.

Karl Valks, sports director with the ARD station who commissioned the poll, said the company was "dismayed that the results are what they are, but they are also an expression of the social situation in Germany today".

"Sport plays an important role in our society, the national team is a strong example of integration," German media cited him as saying.

The current national squad has a number of players with mixed heritage, including captain Ilkay Gündogan and winger Leroy Sané.
Germany is hosting the Euro 2024 tournament later this month, and Nagelsmann said his team would be playing "for everyone in the country".

They will kick-off the competition with a clash against Scotland at Munich's Allianz Arena on 14 June.

The controversy comes just weeks after the team's kit manufacturer, Adidas, was forced to ban fans from buying German football kits customised with the number 44, after media raised their resemblance to the symbol used by World War Two-era Nazi SS units.
The SS was responsible for many of the crimes against humanity committed by the Nazis. Members of the SS ranged from Gestapo agents to concentration camp guards. SS duties included administering death camps where millions of Jews and others were put to death.

BusinessMexico Elects First Female President by ShoeGetSize(op): 10:43am On Jun 03, 2024
Claudia Sheinbaum will be Mexico's first ever female president
Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico's first woman president in an historic landslide win.

Mexico's official electoral authority said preliminary results showed the 61-year-old former mayor of Mexico City winning between 58% and 60% of the vote in Sunday's election.
That gives her a lead of about 30 percentage points over her main rival, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez.
Ms Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on 1 October.

Ms Sheinbaum, a former energy scientist, has promised continuity, saying that she will continue to build on the "advances" made by Mr López Obrador, further building on the welfare programmes which have made the outgoing president very popular.
But in her victory speech she also highlighted what has set this Mexican election apart from previous ones. She told cheering voters: "For the first time in the 200 years of the [Mexican] Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico."
She said, it was an achievement not just for her but for all women.
"I've said it from the start, this is not just about me getting [to the top office], it's about all of us getting here."
She added: "I won't fail you."
Ms Sheinbaum also thanked her rival, Xóchitl Gálvez, who has conceded victory.

Prior to running for president, Ms Sheinbaum was mayor of Mexico City, one of the most influential political positions in the country and one that is seen as paving the way for the presidency.

Ms Sheinbaum, whose Jewish maternal grandparents immigrated to Mexico from Bulgaria fleeing the Nazis, had an illustrious career as a scientist before delving into politics. Her paternal grandparents hailed from Lithuania.
Both of her parents were scientists and Ms Sheinbaum studied physics before going on to receive a doctorate in energy engineering.

She spent years at a renown research lab in California studying Mexican energy consumption patterns and became an expert on climate change.

That experience and her student activism eventually earned her the position of secretary of the environment for Mexico City at the time when Andrés Manuel López Obrador was mayor of the capital.

In 2018 she became the first female mayor of Mexico City, a post she held until 2023, when she stepped down to run for president.

The election, which pitted Ms Sheinbaum against Ms Gálvez, has been described as a sea change for women in Mexico.

Edelmira Montiel, 87, said that she was grateful to be alive to see a woman elected to the top office.

"Before, we couldn't even vote, and when you could, it was to vote for the person your husband told you to vote for. Thank God that has changed and I get to live it," she told Reuters news agency, referring to the fact that women were only allowed to vote in national elections in 1953.

While the fact that the two front-runners were women was widely celebrated, the campaign was marred by violent attacks.

As well as a new president, voters were also electing all members of Mexico's Congress and governors in eight states, the head of Mexico City's government, and thousands of local officials.
And it was local candidates in particular who were targeted in the run-up to the vote.

The government says more than 20 were killed across Mexico, although other surveys put the total at 37.
Ms Gálvez harshly criticised the government and her rival in the presidential race for the violence which blights large parts of Mexico.
She promised to be "the bravest president, a president who does confront crime" if elected, but failed to provide many details about how she would tackle the powerful criminal cartels which are behind much of the violence.

After Ms Sheinbaum's lead became unassailable, Ms Gálvez called her.
"I told her I saw a Mexico with a lot of pain and violence. I wished that she could solve the severe problems our people have,” Ms Gálvez said of the call.
How to tackle Mexico's violent cartels is going to be one of the many challenges facing Ms Sheinbaum when she takes up office.

She has said that it is important to tackle what she says are the roots of the violence and has promised to invest in welfare programmes to prevent poor young Mexicans from being recruited by criminal groups.

On relations with Mexico's northern neighbour, the United States, which at times have been testy under her predecessor in office, she said she would ensure there would be "a relationship of friendship, mutual respect and equality".
But in a reference to the many Mexicans living and working in the US, she promised to "always defend the Mexicans who are on the other side of the border”.

Relations between the US and Mexico suffered under Mr López Obrador, who has been in power since 2018.
The outspoken leader was barred from running for a second term under Mexico's constitution, which limits presidents to a single six-year-term.
He threw his weight behind Ms Sheinbaum instead.
Having the backing of the popular president, who has an approval rate of close to 60%, gave Ms Sheinbaum's campaign a huge boost.
Many of those voting for her said they backed Morena's programme to alleviate poverty and wanted to see it continued.

Israel has presently transformed itself into a war time economy because of the Gaza War and the attacks from Hezbollah, Houthi Rebels, ISIS etc.

What this means is that normal levels of productivity will drop marginally for as long as the wars continue. That is normal in warfare. Russia is going through the same thing because of the war in Ukraine.

However in the long term, investors have not lost confidence is Israel's tech industry which is one of the leading experts in producing semi conductors in all manner of devices from super computers to iPhones. Israel also leads the world in Artificial Intelligence (AI). You will be surprised that many of Israel's enemies are secretly patronising Israel while they are fooling you that they hate Jews. Even Indonesia which is the biggest muslim country on earth in terms of population, is codedly doing business with Israel. The Saudis too follow join. As soon as the war is over, it will be business as usual and the Palestinians will crawl back into the hole they climbed out of.

PoliticsDonald Trump Found Guilty On All 34 Counts In Hush Money Trial by ShoeGetSize(op): 10:39pm On May 30, 2024
Donald Trump has been found guilty of all 34 counts of falsifying business records in a criminal hush-money scheme to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

https://www.hostpic.org/images/2405310312430108.jpg

The verdict came after a jury deliberated for less than twelve hours in the unprecedented first criminal trial against a US president. It marks a perilous political moment for Trump, the presumptive nominee for the Republican nomination, whose poll numbers have remained unchanged throughout the trial but could tank at any moment.

Trump was convicted by a jury of 12 New Yorkers of felony falsification of business records, which makes it a crime for a person to make or cause false entries in records with the intent to commit a second crime. He will be sentenced on 11 July at 10am ET.

“This was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt,” Trump said at the courthouse after the verdict was read. “This was a rigged trial, a disgrace.”

In Trump’s case, the Manhattan district attorney’s office alleged Trump falsely recorded the reimbursements he made to his former lawyer Michael Cohen, who paid the adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 for her silence about her affair with Trump, as “legal expenses”.

The prosecution alleged the falsifications were made to conceal Trump’s violation of New York state election law, which makes it a crime to promote the election of any person to office through unlawful means.

Prosecutors argued in part that those unlawful means were the $130,000 payment to Daniels, which was in effect an illegal campaign contribution, because it was done solely for the benefit of his 2016 campaign and exceeded the $2,700 individual contribution cap.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office called 20 witnesses who, over the course of four weeks, gave evidence of how Trump plotted with the tabloid mogul David Pecker and Cohen to bury accounts of affairs with Daniels and the Playboy model Karen McDougal.

The witnesses – some friendly to Trump, others openly hostile – said Trump’s worry over the Daniels story intensified after the October 2016 release of the infamous Access Hollywood tape, in which Trump was caught on a hot mic bragging about sexual assault.

The recording featured Trump boasting about being able to grab women “by the pussy” without their consent because he was famous. Trial witnesses testified the Trump campaign worried that his efforts to dismiss the tape as “locker room talk” would fail if more boorish behavior came to light.

When the Daniels story threatened to become widely known weeks before the 2016 election, Cohen moved into action and paid Daniels $130,000 to buy the exclusive rights to her story – in order to suppress its publication.

After the 2016 election, prosecutors argued, Cohen worked out an illicit repayment plan in which he would be paid $420,000, an inflated sum that “grossed up” for tax reasons the $130,000 and other items Cohen billed.

The trial saw prosecutors elicit testimony from Cohen, Daniels and a parade of Trump’s confidants and employees, as they sought to establish that Trump concealed the alleged payoff scheme in an effort to ensure he would not lose support from female voters.

Cohen proved to be perhaps the most legally consequential witness for the prosecution, as he recounted how he used a home equity loan to raise the $130,000 he then wired to Daniels’ lawyer through a shell company. Cohen did so in the belief that Trump would reimburse him, he testified.

In January 2017, Cohen said, he discussed with Trump and the former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg about being repaid for the $130,000, an overdue bonus and other expenses he incurred doing work that benefited the Trump 2016 campaign.

Cohen produced 11 invoices seeking payment pursuant to a legal “retainer” that did not exist, according to Cohen, which led to 11 checks being cut to Cohen and the Trump Organization recording 12 entries for “legal expense” on its general ledger – totaling 34 instances of alleged falsifications.

Cohen, who was the final witness for the prosecution, said that Trump was furious when he learned that Daniels was on the verge of going public – not least because Cohen had previously worked with Daniels’ lawyer Keith Davidson, in 2011, to remove the affair story from a gossip website.

“Just take care of it,” Cohen recalled Trump saying. “This was a disaster, a fucking disaster. Women will hate me.”

“Would you have made that payment to Stormy Daniels without getting a sign-off from Mr Trump?” prosecutor Susan Hoffinger asked Cohen.

“No, because everything required Mr Trump’s sign-off. And on top of that, I wanted the money back,” Cohen said.

Cohen said that he filed bogus invoices for legal services to cover up the reimbursements, and repeatedly said that Trump was the force behind the Daniels plot. He carried out the payoff “to ensure that the story would not come out, would not affect Mr Trump’s chances of becoming president of the United States”.

In a watershed moment, Cohen told jurors these repayments started not long after an 8 February 2017 meeting with Trump in the Oval Office, where they talked about money. Cohen hadn’t been repaid anything for the payoff.

“So, I was sitting with President Trump and he asked me if I was OK, he asked me if I needed money, and I said: ‘No, all good’,” Cohen told jurors. “He said, ‘All right, just make sure you deal with Allen.’”

“Allen” referenced Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer at the time, who was recently incarcerated for lying at Trump’s recent civil fraud trial. Weisselberg had previously pleaded guilty to tax crimes, for which he was also jailed.

Cohen submitted $35,000 invoices for each month, listing the bill as for legal services. He said it was actually for “the reimbursement, to me, of the hush-money fee along with [another expense] and the bonus”.

Hoffinger went through every invoice and pay document and asked Cohen whether it was for legal services – or false. Cohen repeatedly said that the descriptions of invoices and payments in emails and business documents were, in fact, false.

“What I was doing was at the direction of and benefit of Mr Trump,” Cohen said at one point, among the many times he directly implicated Trump. “Everything required Mr Trump’s sign-off.”

Daniels provided stunning testimony that undermined Trump’s denials that they had sex following a celebrity golf event in Lake Tahoe nearly two decades ago. After rejecting Trump’s invitation to dinner, Daniels decided to go at the advice of a colleague, who said: “It’ll make a great story.”

Daniels said that she went to Trump’s hotel room, and they decided to chat before grabbing something to eat. He asked over and over about her work as an adult film actor, repeatedly asking her questions such as: “What about testing? Do you worry about STDs?” Had she been tested?

“Yes, of course, and I volunteered it as well,” Daniels said. “He asked me, oh, well, have you ever had a bad test? I said: ‘Nope, I can show you my entire record.’”

Trump started to show photos to Daniels at one point, including one of Melania, about which she commented that his wife was “very beautiful” – but allegedly added she should not worry about Melania because “we don’t even sleep in the same room”.

They spoke about Trump’s show, The Apprentice, and Daniels remarked there would be no way she would make it on TV given her line of work.

“You remind me of my daughter, she is smart and blonde and beautiful and people underestimate her as well,” Daniels remembered Trump saying.

Daniels excused herself for the restroom, which was through a bedroom. When she came out, Trump was on the bed, in his underwear and a T-shirt.

“At first I was just startled, like a jump scare,” Daniels said. “I just thought: oh my God, what did I misread to get here? The intention is pretty clear if someone’s stripped down to their underwear and on the bed.”

Daniels tried to leave but he stood between her and the door, albeit “not in a threatening manner”, she said.

“He said, I thought we were getting somewhere. I thought you were serious about what you wanted, if you want to get out of that trailer park … ” Daniels testified. “I was offended, because I never lived in a trailer park.” Daniels said they had sex.

The description of the hotel room encounter was uncomfortable and cringe-inducing testimony, one of the prosecutors suggested in closing arguments. But that was precisely why Trump was so desperate to suppress the story – and conceal that he had done so.

“This scheme, cooked up by these men, at this time, could very well be what got President Trump elected,” the prosecutor Joshua Steinglass said.

Foreign AffairsHavard University Poll Shows 80% Of Americans Strongly Support Israel by ShoeGetSize(op): 8:34am On May 29, 2024
Anyone who watches the evening news or cable news outlets in the United States might conclude that Americans have turned against the Jewish state and back Hamas instead.

https://www.hostpic.org/images/2405291308320099.jpg

But a new Harvard/Harris poll makes it clear that such a conclusion would be wildly inaccurate.

The truth is that the vast majority of Americans are continuing to stand with Israel despite the vicious and relentless assault by those in the so-called "mainstream media," radicals on college campuses, and radically left-wing "progressive" Members of Congress against Israel and its conduct in the war in the Gaza Strip.

The poll, conducted in late April, found that fully 80% of Americans say they support Israel in its war with Hamas.

Almost 7 in 10 Americans believe that Israel is acting morally in its fight against Hamas.

Specifically, the poll found that 67% think Israel is actively trying to avoid civilian casualties in the fighting.

What's more, 56% of Americans support the $26 billion aid package that Congress just passed and President Joe Biden just signed that provides arms and ammunition for Israel on an emergency basis, as well as humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza.

Today marks 209 days since Oct. 7, the day that the Hamas terrorist organization invaded Israel communities bordering the Gaza Strip, murdering some 1,200 innocent men, women and children, beheading some and burning some Israeli famines to death in their homes.

That day, Hamas also kidnapped 253 Israelis and foreign workers, dragging them into terror tunnels underneath Gaza, raping women and brutally torturing and sexually assaulting others.

The Harvard CAPS Harris poll was conducted on April 24-25, 2024 among 1,961 registered American voters.

A picture should be taken of your brain so it can be studied for signs of decay and disintegration.

Israel is a self sustaining country. They don't have a drop of oil, but they have been getting by in spite of the hatred of all the muslim countries around them. How do you think that is happening? The Israelis have mastered the art of self preservation.

Afrojuju2017:
Israel is at the economic mercy of the rest of the world. Do you know why the October 7 happened, it was to force the Saudi Arabian government and it crown prince from recognising the state of Israel. All things prior to October 7 has been reset

Where is the indecency and prostitution? Or is it not the case that stupidity and lack of self control is deeply ingrained in the mind of the average believer of that religion to the extent that a woman has to be wrapped from head to toe in black cloth before you h0rny he-goats will regard her as decent?

Human rights groups are calling for the release of a Saudi woman, who they say has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for supporting women’s rights and for the way she dressed.

Manahel al-Otaibi, a 29-year-old fitness instructor and women’s rights activist, was sentenced during a “secret hearing” before the kingdom’s Specialized Criminal Court on January 9, 2024, Amnesty International and the London-based Saudi rights organization ALQST said in a joint statement Tuesday.

However, the decision to imprison al-Otaibi only surfaced weeks later, after the Saudi government replied to a request by United Nations Special Rapporteurs for information about the case, the watchdogs say.

Al-Otaibi “stands accused of terrorist offences and was arrested in accordance with the law under a legally valid warrant,” Saudi Arabia’s mission to Geneva said in a letter in January, in response to the UN request.

Amnesty and ALQST allege Al-Otaibi’s charges are related “solely to her choice of clothing and expression of her views online, including calling on social media for an end to Saudi Arabia’s male guardianship system, publishing videos of herself wearing ‘indecent clothes,’ and ‘going to the shops without wearing an abaya’.”

Her sister, Fawzia al-Otaibi, faces similar charges but was able to flee Saudi Arabia after she was summoned for questioning in 2022, they said.

Saudi Arabia’s authorities “must immediately and unconditionally” release Manahel al-Otaibi, as the decision to imprison her “directly contradicts the authorities’ narrative of reform and women’s empowerment,” Amnesty and ALQST said.

“Manahel’s conviction and 11-year sentence is an appalling and cruel injustice,” said Bissan Fakih, Amnesty International’s Campaigner on Saudi Arabia. “With this sentence the Saudi authorities have exposed the hollowness of their much-touted women’s rights reforms in recent years and demonstrated their chilling commitment to silencing peaceful dissent.”

Following her arrest, al-Otaibi was subjected “to physical and psychological abuse” in the Malaz Prison in Riyadh, the groups said. She told her family in April that she was being held in solitary confinement and had a broken leg as a result of physical abuse, Amnesty and ALQST said. CNN is unable to independently verify these claims.

CNN has reached out to the Saudi government for comment on the accusations.

In its letter to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the kingdom’s mission to Geneva said that “no person is held in detention in Saudi Arabia for exercising their rights and freedoms,” and that “state institutions have a legal obligation to ensure that all individuals are treated fairly irrespective of their religion, race, sex or nationality.”

While Saudi authorities have removed some of the restrictions on women under the male guardianship system, “many discriminatory features remain in place,” the watchdogs said.

“The long-awaited 2022 Personal Status Law, which was supposed to be a major reform, in fact serves to codify rather than abolish many restrictive elements of the system, including matters of marriage, divorce, child custody and inheritance,” Amnesty and ALQST said.

Al-Otaibi “ironically” believed in Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s pledge for reforms, “yet she was arrested on 16 November 2022 for exercising exactly these freedoms,” Amnesty and ALQST said.

Al-Otaibi’s sentencing comes “amid an intensified crackdown on free speech in Saudi Arabia, including online expression,” the groups said. Over the last two years, Saudi courts have “handed down lengthy prison terms on dozens of individuals for their expression on social media, including many women,” they said.
