A 13-year-old young lady took her own life after her father freely disgraced in her in a YouTube feature.
Izabel Laxamana jumped from a bridge on May 29, just days after her dad Jeff cut off her hair and posted a video of the punishment online.
She was taken to a hospital, where she died on Saturday.During the video posted by her father, a male voice can be heard saying: “The consequences of getting messed up, man, you lost all that beautiful hair.“Was it worth it?”

She replies “no” before he asks: “How many times did I warn you?”

She girl quietly replies: “A lot.”

It is still not clear why Izabel was in trouble with her father.

The News Tribune quotes reports on social media that the schoolgirl was upset after being banned from running for a position on the student body.

A statement said the girl did not have parental permission to participate as a candidate, and rumour-mongering was hurting efforts of students and staff to deal with the trauma of Izabel’s death.

Education36 States Of Nigeria And Their Meanings by sholly007(op): 7:20am On May 28, 2015
1. ABIA STATE
As many might have guessed, Abia is an acronym derived from the name of the four main groups of people in the state as at the time it was formed in 1991. These were the: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato and Afikpo. Former Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu (hin too dey talk joor) is from Bende while Lambert Ndukwe, one of the richest men in Nigeria in the 50s (he imported stockfish from Northern European nations like Norway and exported cotton back) was from Isuikwato. Afikpo now belongs to Ebonyi State and as for Aba, we all know berra…lol! Okay, let’s roll!

2. ADAMAWA STATE
The area that is now Adamawa State was conquered by Modibbo Adama Bin Ardo Hassan, a warrior of the Ba’en clan of the Fulanis, in the beginning of the 19th century. Modibbo is a Fulani courtesy title that means ‘The Lettered/Learned One’ (in Hausa, it is Mallam). Modibbo Adama was also the regional leader of the Fulani Jihad led Uthman Dan Fodio in 1804. That made the Adamawa Emirate a vassal state of the Sultan of Sokoto. He hailed from the Gurin region (now a tiny hamlet) and got the green flag (to lead the jihad) in 1806. A man of humble beginnings (father was a local teacher and mother, a simple Shuwa Arab lady, according to some historians), he later founded Adamawa Emirate in 1809.

A brave warrior of Dan Fodio, he fought at Ngazzargamu (capital of the old Borno Empire now in Yobe State) and was later ordered by his teacher, Dan Fodio, to return home and become the Lamido Fumbina (the Ruler of the Southlands in Fulfulde, the language of the Fulanis) and then carry out the jihad from the River Nile to the Bight of Biafra (shoooo!). He was followed back to his place by Hausa and Fulani (Toronkawa) fighters. Even trainers and instructors came from as far as the Maghreb (now Northwest Africa: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya) and the Ottoman Empire -in the light of recent events in Nigeria, does this ring any bell at all? Think about that for a minute. Thereafter, he conquered many areas and regions (including incursions into Northern Cameroon where we now have mainly Fulani Muslims), moved his capital to Ribadu, then Joboliwo and eventually died in 1847 in Yola, which he also founded but not after he had formed his new state which he named after himself. His tomb is in Gurin, Furore LGA till today and at the height of his power, Adamawa Emirate stretched 103,000 sq km as far as Lake Chad and had as much as 1.5 million inhabitants. Expansion towards the south was prevented by the thick jungle and tsetse fly (dangerous to cattle). He also founded Garoua in northeastern Cameroon.

Today, his descendants rule as the Lamidos of Adamawa, and the emirate is like the only one in the north in which Hausa is regarded and learnt as a second language. The current one is Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa (a former chairman of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria) whose father, Aliyu Musdafa, was one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Africa having spent 57 years on the throne. Adamawa (cattle breed), Adamawa Region (in Cameroon), the 4,000 ft-high Adamawa Plateau called Lesdihosere by the Fulanis (in Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic), Adamawa languages such as Chamba-Mumuye, Kim, Mbum, Wiyaa and Laal are all named after him. Okay, enough of Adamawa before my Akwa Ibom friends start to dey vex…lol!

3. AKWA IBOM STATE
One of the richest states in West Africa and the homeland of my much-cherished Ibibio, Annang, Obolo and Oron friends, Akwa Ibom is named after a river, the Qua Iboe (or Kwa Iboe) River. About 20 miles to the entrance of this river is the popular Qua Iboe Offshore Oil Terminal and the Qua Iboe Onshore Oil Field (Oil Mining Lease, OML, 13) (btw, Oando owns 40% of that).

Translating Qua Iboe itself was not an easy task. Some records indicate that the river emptied itself around a settlement in Ibeno called Aqua Obio (meaning ‘Big Town’) but early European explorers corrupted it to become Qua Iboe. Today, Aqua Obio includes Mkpanak and its neighbouring settlements. The river itself originates from the Umuahia Hills in Abia State and travels for about 150 km before it flows N-S and then empties into the Atlantic Ocean through Eket, Ibeno LGA of Akwa Ibom State. Its maximum depth is about 10 metres.

There are fears that discharges from the effluent treatment plants of the nearby Exxon-Mobil company are poisoning the fish and other organisms in the river with heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium, lead and chromium. That’s according to a very detailed study carried out in 2006 by scholars from the Medical Biochemistry, Chemistry and Animal Science of the Imo State University and the Federal University of Technology, Owerri. See the references if you are interested in the study. Ok, before I forget, Qua Iboe was also the site of Qua Iboe Mission, the third Protestant Church to arrive Nigeria in 1887. The interesting thing here is that the mission was founded by Samuel Alexander Bill, a British missionary and a Member of the British Empire who devoted his life to preaching to the Efik and Annang speaking people of the area. He is buried at Ibeno on the bank of the Qua Iboe River beside his wife, Gracie and his very first convert, David Ekong. Next!

4. ANAMBRA STATE
Okay, this is pretty straightforward. It was derived from the name of the Oma Mbala (Omambala) River (in Ibo, the native name of the river is Ànyịm Ọma Mbala). Anglicize the pronunciation and you have Madam NAFDAC’s homestate. The river is quite long o, about 210 kilometers, it is a major tributary of the River Niger, the most important below Lokoja. Yep! Let’s keep rolling.

5. BAUCHI STATE
Nicknamed the Pearl of Tourism (check out Yankari). ‘Bauchi’ is Hausa word meaning the southern flanks of Hausaland. Tribes living in the southern parts of the Hausaland were referred to as kasashen bauchi and the area they lived in later came to be known simply as Bauchi. Then, kasashen bauchi included the areas that we now call Bauchi itself, Plateau State, Northern Niger, Southern Sokoto (that includes Yauri and Zuru) and Southern Kaduna (hello to my Barnawa friends). It was a major center for the slave raiders of the day. In another rendition, the state was named for Baushe, a famous hunter who settled there before the 19th century while another states that ‘bauchi’ is Hausa word for slavery since it was a center for slave raiders. You decide.

6. BAYELSA STATE
Famed for being the homestate of our dear President (where the First Lady also known as Mama Ice Cream is also a Perm Sec), Bayelsa is also the place of Samson Siasia and Finidi George. Let’s continue before we delve into football…lol! How the name came about is quite interesting. In the old Rivers State, it was the tradition to use acronyms when naming the local government areas (LGAs). For example, Brass LGA was simply called BALGA, Yenagoa was YELGA while Sagbama was just SALGA. And since it was the people of these three former LGAs of Rivers State that clamoured and fought for the creation of the state forming the State Creation Movement, the name that they finally agreed upon was this:
BA + YEL + SA = BAYELSA. Simple. No long thing.

7. BENUE STATE
It is a word from the Batta language ‘Binuwe’ which means ‘Mother of Waters’. Streams forming watershed from the Adamawa Plateau drain into this mighty river and it has its roots in northern Cameroon. Interestingly, the Benue (La Benoue in French, and it was also formerly called Chadda (Tchadda) River) has many tributaries in the Adamawa Emirate. These include the Beti, Kunini and the Lamorde. During the months of August and September, the river becomes very navigable as it reaches its widest and can stretch up to a mile from bank to bank bringing with it flood plain deposits of fertile soils that has made the state one of the best locations for farming in Nigeria. It reaches its lowest level in March and April and stretching for 1,400 kilometers, it is the longest tributary of the River Niger.

8. BORNO (BORNU) STATE
It has been nicknamed the Home of Peace but you will agree with me that that has to be changed asap! The name was derived from ‘Borno’, an alternative name of the Kanuris who form the predominant ethnic group in the state. Kanuris are also known as Yerwa, Sirata or Beri Beri (known in places like Ilorin as Baruba or Bariba). However, another rendition has it that it means ‘Barr Nuh’, which is Arabic for ‘The Land of Noah’ as it was believed that the Ark of Noah landed there after the Flood. Some historians do not subscribe to this because they believe it is a fancy of some Arabists. You decide.

9. CROSS RIVER
First, it is Cross River State and NOT Cross Rivers State. And yes, it is Rivers State, not River State. Don’t get it twisted. The state took its name from the Cross River (known to natives as the Oyono, and the Manyu River in Cameroon). Flowing through swamps, creeks and inland delta, it joins the Calabar River to end up in the Atlantic Ocean.

10. DELTA STATE
Obviously, it was named for the delta of the River Niger formed as it enters the Atlantic Ocean. The geographical feature formed when a river is about to enter a larger body of water like the sea or ocean is called a delta and there are various shapes.

11. EBONYI STATE
Known for having some of the nation’s finest rice, yams and richest salt deposits, the state was named after the Aboine River which rises from the Enugu Highlands and cuts through Abakaliki, the state capital. It was formed in 1996 under the military junta of the late General Sani Abacha. Geographical name data supplied by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, a member of the United States military intelligence community shows the river flowing not too far from Afikpo too, with its main tributary being the Asu River. The river joins Cross River 10 km to the east of Afikpo (see references). During the colonial times, it was known as the Western Aboine River. One of the major activities along and on the river is sand quarrying. Ebonyi is home to the brilliant Nkwa Umuagbogho and the Amasiri-based Ojianyalere Dancers. You need to see their dances to appreciate. Mehn! They are superb dancers! Nigeria is such a rich country, only if we realize this and concentrate on real matters and not the irritating trivialities you see everywhere today. You can enjoy some of the dances here, like the Ahunanyaekwe Dance Group Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria below:

v=BTaC8HQfW_k

Let’s go to Benin now…lol!

12. EDO STATE
Hmmmmn, Edo. Initially applied to mean the Bini people (they’ve always called themselves Edo or Iduu, after the progenitor of the Edo race) of the Benin Kingdom (which existed for about 1,000 years before the British conquered it in 1897), Edo today also means the land itself, the culture and the language. It also refers to the adjoining peoples, cultures and languages. The name appears in the royal title of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo. I must chip it in here that many of the websites of Nigerian state governments were absolutely useless for any form of information gathering. Some were either propaganda pages for the governor or were just too bad -graphics and all. Some states did not even have any website! No online representation or presence at all! In the 21st century, this is a shame. But I must say that a few states have very outstanding websites.

13. EKITI STATE
‘Ekiti’ is a term that is said to denote a settlement of many hills. Hills are common geographical features in Ekitiland and are responsible for the division of Ekitiland into smaller kingdoms and subunits.

14. ENUGU STATE
Also known as Nigeria’s coal city, Enugu derived its name from two local words enu ugwu which means ‘top of the hill’. Amazingly, that itself is a derivative of the village of Enugu Ngwo, which is located just to the west of the city. Enugu City itself is not on the hill, it is actually at the base of a plateau but the village is situated right on top of the hill. I hope Governor Sullivan Iheanacho Chime will triumphantly conquer the particular hill he is climbing right now.

15. GOMBE STATE
Established as emirate during Jihad by Modibbo Buba Yero, a Fulani warrior and student of Uthman Dan Fodio in 1800, the modern-day Gombe State was carved out of Bauchi State. Gombe was known in the 1930s for its groundnuts and for cotton in the 1950s. Today nko? Gombe is mainly populated by Fulanis and the state has been named ‘Gombe’ which is the dialect of Fulani language (Fulfulde) spoken in the area.

CrimeChildren Day: UNICEF Criticize The Use Of Kids As Suicide Bombers by sholly007(op): 6:38am On May 27, 2015
It’s Children’s Day.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed concern over the increasing use of children as suicide bombers in northern Nigeria.
UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Jean Gough said that UNICEF’s report showed that more children and women have been used as suicide bombers in Northeast Nigeria in the first 5 months of this year than during the whole of last year.“In 2014, 26 suicide attacks were recorded compared to 27 attacks as of May 2015. In at least three-quarters of these incidents, children and women were reportedly used to carry out the attacks. Girls and women have been used to detonate bombs or explosives belts at crowded locations, such as market places and bus stations.”

Meanwhile, senator, representing Lagos Central District, Senator Oluremi Tinubu said that this year’s celebration calls for sober reflection because many children are still victims of insurgents who are brutally subjected to abuses, (physically, psychologically and sexually), with many becoming refugees in their own country.

the former Lagos first lady said,“Celebrations should not be restricted to fanfare but should serve as a wake-up call to parents and guardians on the need for protective parentage. It becomes important that we advocate protection for all children while warding off vices. Our children are our tomorrow, our linear contact, who deserves utmost protection,” .

Tinubu said, “It is universally recognized that all children are entitled to protection and education as enshrined in International Conventions, our own Constitution and the Child Rights Act passed by the National Assembly and some states of the federation. Our best efforts at survival and development will amount to nothing if children are continually abused, as it harms their lives, if such laws are not enforced.”

PoliticsPresident Jonathan Talks Over Amendments by sholly007(op): 6:04am On May 27, 2015
A Presidency team led by the Attorney-General of the Federation Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), and National Assembly leaders yesterday(26-05-2015) met in Abuja on the stalemated amendments to the 1999 Constitution.

The Assembly has agreed to drop most of the 10 disputed amendments of the 65 passed by the two chambers.

One of the contentious amendments is payment of pensions for life for the President of the Senate, Deputy President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Deputy Speaker as well as principal officers of the legislature at the state level.

The National Assembly may forego the section on pensions because the economy cannot sustain it.

But as the 2parties wound up the re conciliatory session, there were fresh hurdles on the new amendments, including how to pass these into law and assented to before May 29 when President Goodluck Jonathan will leave office.

There were two options on the card last night on how to address the challenges.

These are either the President signs the amendments into law after the grey areas have been removed by the National Assembly or the Executive will leave the National Assembly to invoke Section 58(5) of the 1999 Constitution to pass the amendments into law without Jonathan’s assent.

It was however learnt that the President was willing to take credit for passing the amendments into law.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that the session of the 2parties lasted for about two to three hours.

It was gathered that the meeting was “frank and reconciliatory” because the communication gap between the Executive and the Judiciary was bridged.

A source said: “The Federal Government team explained that it never harbored any agenda to frustrate constitution amendments in any manner whatsoever.

“The team said what it expected the National Assembly to do was to look at the observations of the Presidency and effect amendments to allow the President to sign the bill into law.

“The government team said the acceptance of 55 amendments out of 65 showed its commitment to the alteration of the constitution.

“At the end of the day, the National Assembly team accepted to effect the correction of some errors observed by the Presidency, including the right to free education, primary and maternal care services, which are made free; pensions for principal officers of the National and State Assemblies; allowing the NJC to appoint the Attorney-General of the Federation and a review of the 30 days allowed for assent to any bill by the President.”

A principal officer of the National Assembly said: “The Executive and the National Assembly leaders have had talks on areas of disagreement.

“I may not be able to give you the details because our legal representatives are working out the details of what we agreed upon.

“We hope to present these details to the Supreme Court on Wednesday. At the end, a fine-tuned copy of the Fourth Alteration Act, 2015 will be presented to the President.”

Another source said: “Our expectation is that the President should be able to sign the amendments into law. Alternatively, since the lifespan of the 7th National Assembly ends on June 6, we can still pass the amendments to the incoming President, Muhammadu Buhari, for assent.

“If things work according to plans, the President may assent to the amendments. This is the essence of the reconciliatory session.”

A Senator said: “I don’t see the possibility of the President assenting to the amendments before May 29 because of non-compliance with the threshold specified in Section 9(3) of the 1999 Constitution on amendments.”

The President listed some errors noticeable in the amendments to the Constitution by the Senate and the House of Representatives as follows:

PoliticsMongonu Steps Down From Speakership Race, Endorses Gbajabiamilaa Re- Elected Mem by sholly007(op): 7:12pm On May 26, 2015
A re- elected member of the House of Representatives (Mohammed Mongonu) would no longer contest for the position of Speaker in the 8th Assembly, it emerged on Tuesday.
Instead, Monguno,a member of the House representing Borno, North East, would contest as Deputy Speaker on a joint ticket with the Minority leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila as Speaker. He spoke with journalists at a two- day retreat organised for All Progressive Congress lawmakers in Abuja.

Monguno said his decision was the outcome of broad consultation.

He said: “I will instead be running for the Deputy Speaker position on a joint ticket with Hon. Gbajabiamila.

“I am withdrawing from the race for two reasons – First, is to ensure party cohesion.

“As leaders of our great party, we can ill-afford to have a divided House, if we are to deliver on the much-needed change we promised Nigerians in the course of the campaign.

“And, secondly, Gbajabiamila stands tall amongst our peers in terms of experience and understanding of the contours and nuances of the legislative process.

“The convention in representative democracies the world over is that having served as Minority Leader, you ascend to the Speakership position should your party gain the majority.

“Besides, the position cannot be left in the hands of anyone who desires to learn on the job because managing the complexities and subtleties of a legislative process is serious business.

“Over the years, I have come to know Gbajabiamila as an exceptionally effective legislator.

“He leads by building consensus, listening to good ideas and putting the nation first. His outright rejection of a national award on grounds of principle, tells you all you need to know about his character.

“As our chamber’s next Speaker, Gbajabiamila will re-energize our institution by building the capacity we need to make our role in government more effective and more accountable to the voters.

“Today, our beloved country stands on the cusp of change, we have a unique and golden opportunity to make our legislature more vital and inclusive for all of its members irrespective of party affiliation.”

He appealed to his colleagues to vote for the Gbajabiamila/ Monguno ticket.

Nairaland GeneralPhoto: How Boko Haram Burnt His Family Alive, Says Survivor by sholly007(op): 10:06am On May 26, 2015
Boko Haram survivor currently residing at Mararaba Gurku near Abuja, James Yaduma, narrated how he lost almost all his family members in one fell swoop to the rampaging Boko Haram insurgents who struck his Zha community of Hong Local Government in Adamawa State about 7 months ago.
Yaduma, who was a farmer before he was sent packing from his village, has since started a new vocation in his new found abode to keep body and soul together by scooping sand in a nearby stream and disposing it to builders of houses as the place is a beehive of construction. In his narration of what he suffered, Yaduma said life for him will never be the same since the gory and unfortunate incidence occurred, having witnessed how his aged father, mother and other relatives were burnt alive by Boko Haram insurgents.

“They struck our village in the wee hours of that fateful Friday and started shooting indiscriminately leading to the death of many residents.
“My aged parents, who could not run for dear lives, were trapped in our family house where the insurgents met them, set a bonfire and threw them inside alive,” he narrated.

Yaduma noted that among his family members who were at home when the insurgents struck, only he was lucky to escape by a hair’s breadth, having tucked himself in an obscure part of the house.

“When I started hearing gun shots, I instantly knew that Boko Haram had struck our village having taken over Mubi and other parts of the state. Since they took over Mubi, we could not sleep anymore as we knew very soon our village will come under attack,” he said.

He added that since he managed to escape the onslaught, he trekked for three weeks inside the surrounding bushes without knowing his bearing until he met some cattle rearers who accommodated him for few a days before showing him the way.

“After I escaped, I set out to Abuja since I know I have relatives here. I trekked most of the distance from Hong to Abuja but at intervals some spirited motorists do offer some help after hearing my ordeal,” he said.

He noted that the sand he sells fetches him between N5,000 – N7,000 weekly, just as he appealed to the President-elect General Muhammadu Buhari to do his best to secure Nigeria without prejudices as he said there is nothing like peace, noting that he is in his present state due to absence of peace.

“I am appealing to President- elect, whom I believe is an upright man to do all within his power to restore peace in Nigeria as many people have been made to suffer unnecessarily, having lost their lives and properties to the insurgency.
He said “Some of us want to return back to our villages but we cannot do so; all our houses, businesses and farms have been destroyed,”

Well I doubt it if there's any "secret" you're referring to, which I don't know. I'm an SEO guru myself. I have a blog that generates 6000 daily visits and over 500,000 monthly page views (Nigerian traffic) -- all from SEO alone. I'm ranking on Google page one for over 100 keywords that Nigerians are searching for every day. Over 80 percent of my traffic is organic. Does that speak volume to you?

Why I asked my question is that I've seen many people rejoice over ranking for keywords that attract very meagre search volumes on Google.

Nairaland GeneralPhoto: 2 Children Die Of Hunger In Ibadan On Tuesday by sholly007(op): 8:12am On May 22, 2015
2 children starved to death on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
Whereby the state police command to Celestial Street in Agbowo visited the area..
The area is close to the nation’s premier university, the University of Ibadan (UI).

When the police convoy get to the area, surprise was written on the faces of residents and passersby. Many followed their vehicles to find out if a heavy crime had been committed in the area. But they soon discovered that Amarachi Ukoha, 16yrs, and Munachi Madagu, 3yrs, died because the breadwinner of the family, Mr Kunle Ayoola, could not feed them.

Failed to provide the medical treatment for them because he had no money to take to the hospital.

Ayoola, 20yrs, said he could not help the children because of his poor income, adding that those who could help were also around.

He is married to Chinonye, also 20yrs. They have an 18month old baby. Chinonye had Munachi for her first husband and brought him to her new home. Her younger sister, Amarachi, 16, came to live with them.

She was said to have died of hunger, which was compounded by diarrhoea when the family was preparing to bury Munachi.

Both died in an 8rooms bungalow. They were thought to have been struck by a strange illness that caused their death. But Ayoola confessed that death visited them because he could not feed them.

Ayoola said: “I think they died as a result of poor medical care. I tried my best to save them but there was no money. The only people that could help were not at home when I visited them.”

The family man gathers metals from dustbins and dump sites and sells them at Ogunpa Market in Ibadan. But the income, according to him, is so small that he could not afford to feed his family well.

Ayoola said: “I sell scraps at Ogunpa Market. I make between N500 and N1,000 daily when business is good. I did not learn any work before starting the scrap business. I dropped out of school in Primary Six because there was no money.”

The scraps seller said he was making efforts to bury Munachi when he approached the priest of a church opposite the house for advice. But the man advised him not to bury the boy because he was not his father. He took him to the police station to report the death.

The priest, Most Superior Evangelist Tosin Otakoya, said: “On Tuesday, one boy called Kunle Ayoola, who is living in front of my church, came to me and said one of his babies had died. I asked if the baby truly belonged to him and he said no. I told him he had no right to bury the baby unless his dad authorised him to do so. When we tried to get the baby’s father on phone and the number was not going, I told him to go to police station and report himself because he could not keep the body in his house.

“I said it was not ideal for him to bury a boy that he did not father. On getting to the station, I met with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and explained the situation to her. She volunteered to go to the house with me. When we got to the house, we met another 16-year-old lady, who was already dead, on the floor. It was strange to us.

“So, she contacted the Area Commander and the police commissioner to come to our rescue. The Area Commander came and take them away to the mortuary. I noticed these people died of poverty. They had nothing to eat or money to take care of themselves. The lady and that baby were sick and there was no care before they pass away.”

It's Pathetic.

May God Help Us.

Nairaland GeneralTrain Kills Middle-aged Woman In Lagos Yesterday by sholly007(op): 7:30am On May 22, 2015
An unidentified middle-aged woman was killed yesterday by an Ido, Lagos-bound train.

The accident occurred on the rail line at Cappa bus stop on Agege Motor around by 12.30pm. Sympathisers gathered around the victim, watching as she breathed her last.Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the woman seemed to have been lost in thought as she stood on the railway track while the train approached.

A passenger hanging on the train was said to have shouted at her to get off the rail track.

An eyewitness, who simply gave her name as Iyabo said: “I was here (side of the track) and the woman crossed onto the rail track. She just stood there lost in thought and somebody from the train stoned her, we all shouted at her to get out but she did not until she was hit.”

Another witness said the train did not horn until it got close to the victim.

Some said the victim might have been on a suicide mission.

“There is no way a train will come on the tracks and you will not know by the vibrations on the rail. They stoned and shouted at her but she refused to leave, what do you call that if not suicide?” A man said.

Emergency and rescue services operators are being blamed for failure to respond to calls when the accident occurred.

When The Nation arrived on the scene shortly after the accident, her body was still on the track with blood oozing out of her nose.

“We have called Lagos emergency numbers several times and they promised to come, yet refused to show up; nobody was ready to help,” a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority ( LASTMA) official said.

Another LASTMA official accused the traffic police of neglecting the victim.

“Immediately it happened, I told the policemen to let us move the woman, but they refused, maybe we would have saved her life,” he said.

Nairaland GeneralBPE: FG Spents N373bn On Former PHCN Workers’ Settlements by sholly007(op): 4:37pm On May 21, 2015
Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Mr Benjamin Dikki, said the Federal Government spent over N373 billion to settle former workers of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Thursday by BPE’s Head of Public Communications, Mr Alex Okoh.According to the statement, the director-general disclosed the amount when members of the National Union of Electricity Employees of Nigeria (NUEE) visited him. It reported Dikki as saying that the money represented payment of 98 per cent of the workforce of the former officials of the power sector.

According to the statement, 46,744 of the 47,913 bonafide staff members of the defunct PHCN have so far been paid their entitlements amounting to over N373 billion.

“Only 1,169 of the 47,913 workers of the defunct PHCN are yet to be paid. The outstanding number includes workers that exited the company before the severance payment commenced. “Also, 2,791 retired staff of the PHCN, representing 65 per cent of the retirees, have been paid N16.4 billion. “The outstanding number of retirees is 1,516,’’ it said.

The statement appealed to the over 1,000 former workers that were yet to present themselves for verification, to do so, adding that government would not pay anyone that had not been verified. It also urged the union officials to help next of kin of deceased staff members to obtain the appropriate court papers, to enable them to receive their entitlements.

The statement said a committee would be inaugurated by the BPE to ensure prompt payment of beneficiaries. The statement noted that NUEE’s team, led by its National President, Mr Mansur Musa, had decried the non-payment of the severance benefits to some of the affected former staff members. Musa said the delay in the payment had caused untold hardships on the yet-to-be-paid former staff of the company.

PoliticsIndignation Nigerians Blast FG Over 6.4% Unemployment Claim by sholly007(op): 8:47pm On May 16, 2015
Pervasive unemployment across the country, the Nigerian government says the proportion of people without jobs has plummeted dramatically from 28% to just 6.4%, meaning France has a higher percentage of unemployed people than Nigeria, and the United States and United Kingdom barely managed to beat Nigeria by a mark.Unemployment rate in France stands at 10.6 per cent, while the U.S. and U.K. have 5.5 per cent each.

Nigeria’s new rate, unveiled this week by the National Bureau of Statistics as the outcome of a revised methodology for calculating unemployment, has angered many Nigerians.

The revised methodology for computing unemployment statistics reduced Nigeria’s official work hour benchmark from 40 to 20 hours a week, leaving the possibility of categorizing millions of underemployed Nigerians “employed”.

Work hours are the average number of hours a person is expected to complete in a week to be considered employed.

A Nigerians who described the new figure variously as “delusionary”, “politically motivated”, “unserious” and “fallacious”.

But government experts considered that figure inadequate, arguing that persons who put in as much as 39 hours per week cannot be considered unemployed.

The NBS boss noted the difference between unemployed and “not having work”, saying that only those within the working age of 15 and 64 years and looking for work, but cannot find, are considered unemployed.

“When those in the age brackets of 0-15 years and 65 and above are removed, all others in the economically active population who are not working are either not available or willing to work, not unemployed, like student and full-time housewives,” Mr. Kale said.

Indignation Nigerians React
For the Country Director, PLAN International, Hussaini Abdu, the 6.4% rate is far from realistic. He said 34 per cent would be close to the true figure.

“The truth is that the NBS has been under tremendous pressure from the World Bank and the Minister of Finance to review these indices,” Mr. Abdu said. “The review was basically to reduce the negative expression about unemployment, just as they said poverty level was 53 percent.”

Mr. Abdu said unemployment statistics are too serious to be politicized, particularly at a time Nigeria is having a political transition.

“Changing figures on paper does not reduce the number of the unemployed in the job market. This is a very unserious way to deal with a national problem. If we say unemployment is 6.4 per cent in Nigeria, are we saying we are better off than France, UK and U.S. with higher unemployment figures?

“How do we explain to millions of young Nigerians out in the street looking for jobs? Is government telling them that what is their major problem is not too much a problem? Mr. Abdu stated.

“If government’s is to be believed, it should reflect in the amount of tax they are collecting”, the labour leader said. “This is the globally acceptable standard for measuring employment situation in a country.

“If government is saying almost the entire population are employed and it is not reflected in the tax collected, then something is wrong with the government.”

If one considers the U.S.,(Mr. Esele) said, one hour job for a week would be enough for the person to live very well with his earning, pointing out that in Nigeria’s case, one hour’s work is dependent on other people.

May God Help Us.
