Passport facial recognition
checks fail to work with dark skin and yet the UK decide to continue with the program.

When it launched a new passport checking service, the Home Office knew that it had trouble handling some shades of skin, a report in the new scientist has revealed .

The facial recognition technology failed to recognise the features of some people with very light or dark skin.

The problem had become apparent during trials of the service.

The government says that users can override the automated check if needed.

Facial recognition maps a person's features from a computer-scanned image or live feed.

The results are then compared against a database containing previously created facial maps to find a match.

Documents released as a part of a freedom of information (FOI) request acknowledge that the Home Office knew its system had trouble mapping the faces of some ethnic minorities.

It was aware of the problem but decided to launch the service regardless.

"User research was carried out with a wide range of ethnic groups and did identify that people with very light or very dark skin found it difficult to provide an acceptable passport photograph," the FOI response stated.

"However, the overall performance was judged sufficient to deploy."

The Home Office told the BBC it wanted the process of uploading a passport application photo to be simple. It added it would try and improve the system.

Other facial recognition and facial tracking systems are being developed to address the problem.


This is not the first time the Passport Office's use facial recognition has been known to be problematic.

The photograph of a young black man was recently rejected because it mistook his lips for an open mouth, according to the evening standard.

As a result, Joshua Bada was told his application had been rejected because he needed to provide a plain expression and a closed mouth - something he had in fact done.

Boeing catches fire after takeoff, makes emergency landing ( Ethiopian Airlines)

An airport official in Senegal says an Ethiopian Airlines plane made an emergency landing at the international airport outside the capital Dakar after an engine caught fire after takeoff.

Blaise Diagne International Airport spokesman Tidiane Tamba told The Associated Press that the pilots of the flight, which was headed to Addis Ababa via Bamako, Mali, called the control tower quickly after takeoff Tuesday morning requesting an emergency landing.
He said the pilots reported that the right engine was on fire. The plane landed and an emergency fire crew quickly put out the flames. He said none of the 90 passengers or flight crew were injured

Ethiopian Airlines said on Twitter that a Boeing 767 aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing because of a “technical problem.” It did not provide further details.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame Monday inaugurated what is being described as Africa's "first high tech smartphone factory" in the country's capital Kigali.
President Kagame hailed the launch as another breakthrough for development in Rwanda, which has enjoyed rapid economic growth in recent years and gained a reputation as a hub of innovation.
"The Mara Phone joins a growing list of high-quality products that are made in our country," the president said at the Mara Phones Factory which is situated on the outskirts of Kigali.
The Mara Group, a pan-African business headquartered in Dubai, says the factory will deliver "high quality smartphones at an affordable price."


Mara is producing two types of smartphone in Rwanda: The Mara X with 16GB storage space will retail for 120,250 francs ($130), while the more advanced Mara Z model with 32GB storage is on sale for around 175,750 francs ($190), the company said both phones include features such as high-spec cameras and voice activation mode. The devices are immediately available via Mara's website and stores in Kigali.
