Instagram has announced a new TV service IGTV that appears designed to lure young viewers away from YouTube and back in the clutches of Mark Zuckerberg.
And it features one major difference from its rival: Instagram’s video display will be designed to fill a vertical smartphone screen, rather than horizontal displays like YouTube.
The featured is called IGTV and will increase Facebook-owned Instagram’s video time limit from one minute to 10 minutes for most users.
Accounts with large audiences will be able to go on for as long as an hour. The video will be available through Instagram or a new app called IGTV.
The video will eventually give Facebook more opportunities to sell advertising. It’s the latest instance in which Instagram has ripped a page from a rival’s playbook in an effort to preserve its status as a place for young people to share and view content.
In this case, Instagram is mimicking Google’s YouTube. Before, Facebook and Instagram have copied Snapchat – another magnet for teens and young adults.
Instagram, now nearly 8 years old, is moving further from its roots as a photo-sharing service as it dives headlong into a longer-form video.
The initiative comes as parent company Facebook struggles to attract teens, while also dealing with a scandal that exposed its leaky controls for protecting users’ personal information.
Instagram, which Facebook bought for $1 billion six years ago, now has 1 billion users, up from 800 million nine months ago.
More importantly, 72 per cent of U.S. kids ranging from 13 to 17 years old use Instagram, second to YouTube at 85 per cent, according to the Pew Research Center.

President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Bauchi, capital of Bauchi state, where a windstorm on Saturday destroyed many buildings and schools.
Buhari, who only several months ago visited the city, returned this morning to commiserate with the people over the loss of lives and property.
President Buhari had on 19 June also dispatched a team led by the minister of education, Malam Adamu Adamu to assess the damage done by the storm.
An estimated 1505 houses, including the office of The News Agency of Nigeria were destroyed by the storm.
The presidential delegation included the Director General of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr Mustapha Yunusa Maihaja.
Gov. Mohammed Abubakar of Bauchi had said 349 schools were damaged across the state by the windstorm.
Abubakar disclosed this while receiving Chairman and members of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) Governing Board in Bauchi on a courtesy visit.
“From the report we received so far, 349 schools were affected by the recent disaster from 13 out of the 20 Local Government areas of the state.
” The schools need immediate renovation because the roofs, furniture and computers were all damaged and students are about to start examination,” he said.
Abubakar called on management of UBEC to assist in renovation of some of the schools, just as he urged the chairman to find time and inspect some of the affected schools.

Buhari Cancels May 29 As Democracy Day, It’s Now June 12

President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the cancellation of May 29 as the country’s annual Democracy Day.

Instead, the President said the annual celebration will now hold on June 12, arguing that June 12, 1993 , the date of the election popularly adjudged to be the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history “was far more symbolic of democracy in the Nigerian context than May 29 or even October 1”.

Buhari also announced that MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled election, will be posthumously awarded the highest honour in the land, GCFR.
