PoliticsIs Zoning Holding Nigeria Back? by sillyme(op): 9:22pm On Nov 25, 2010
A recent piece in the Economist highlights the system of zoning, that Nigeria employs to alternate power between the north and south of the country. In the Economist’s words: “Candidates are picked alternatively from north and south behind closed doors and presented to voters in rigged polls.”

I have to agree with the message of the piece, which is essentially saying that zoning does not work. In a country of approximately 150 million people, they need a government that consists of the best people for the job – through merit rather than where they come from.

Since independence 50 years ago, Nigeria has not achieved its full potential as ‘the giant of Africa’. Public services across the nation are all but non-existent, corruption is rife and democracy, in the true meaning of the word, is  not being practiced.

Another extract: “The zoning system…tends to produce poor leaders. Only the well-connected get to the front of the queue. Usually they are incompetent, too, since the regional barons who anoint them like weak figures who will not challenge the status quo.”

Food for thought – What do you think? Is zoning an out-dated idea that produces poor leaders, or is it still the best way to deal with ethnic tensions within Nigeria? Comments below.

Yes of course I have dealt with the police. me and my family had an incident with them that has made me think twice about visiting nigeria again.

And i made a point that it is the ppl of a country that makes up the govt. the ministers, officials and civil servants don't come from another planet. What is going wrong at the foundation to make these people have just a dark view of life and their fellow people that all they want to do is steal, lie and kill when they get any power?

And don't get me started on NEPA,

Also I would love more people to join this debate and not just ignore it because it sounds to difficult. Of course self refection is a hard thing to do, but ti is the ONLY way to grow

My list sounds like very debilitating real problems to me but please elaborate on what I have missed? And also what are these ideas sold by the west?

Is it not time to stop blaming the west, get some balls and look out for ourselves? Asia has managed to do that. Why can't we?

i was born and raised in the western world but have been to nigeria several times.

problems i see there and among nigerians where i live

1. dishonesty. corruption like the type seen in africa is not just a reflection of the govt. but of the people-lets not kid ourselves on that
2. lack of interest in cultural activities like art and beauty
3. pride- many nigerians think they're the shit when they are just normal ppl like the rest of us. get over yourselves
4. close minds
5. selfishness/greed
6. lack of responsiblitly- in nigeria it is normal to cheat and abnormal not to!! also the problems we see with black men and running away from their kids starts in africa. let's change this culture
7. lac of pride- maybe this should be near the top of the list. if nigeria had pride, they would want to present their country on a global scale as developed and put together, not a poor mess (especially with oil so we can't blame the white man for taking our resources!!).

What do you think?
