AgricultureFUNAAB Graduates With Interest In Agriculture Let's Meet Here by Simfglobal(op): 11:51am On Mar 18, 2023
Greatest FUNAABites!!!!

Let's flood this thread and together we move.

I noticed Many of FUNAAB graduates both fresh and old ones are not practicing agriculture despite their interest in farming. This is due to many factors ranging from inability to access land for farming, funds, quality seeds, etc.

I met two FUNAAB graduates in NIHORT Ibadan about two years ago, they were able to get land and join hands to cultivate about two acres of cucumber. They explained their plights in getting land, source of water for irrigation, etc. I saw the need for likes mind from FUNAAB to gather together, and cultivate crops from pepper, tomatoes, cabbage, onion, maize, cassava, etc.

Animal husbandry is not left out, we can raise birds, and other animals.

The first is to provide land for every farmer and everyone shall be responsible for their cultivation or animal husbandry.

Drop your suggestions here.

We can do something as rain is just starting.

All vegetables farmers must be very calculative. It's very easy to produce at times but if you plant at the wrong time, you will loose your profit or gain very little for your efforts.

I delayed my project mainly because of market issues and some other things that cannot be overlooked.

With the money problem, tomato is now very cheap. A big 60kg hausa basket of tomatoes sell for as low as 3000 in shasha market in Ibadan. Best average price is 5000 per 60kg basket.

I've done my nursery now and planting only 5000 seedlings (pepper and tomatoes combined).

I should transplant by March 15 or so.

Can I see the picture of your seed planter and how much are you selling?
The planter is very strong, it's the type that the spring don't get damaged by soil easily, because they are covered with plastics It's goes for 75k, negotiable when you are ready sir.

Drip accessories are also available for those who need them for irrigation this season.

Made my first sales last week Saturday, I was not happy with the sales. Took one of the women selling efo tete in the street to my farm, she harvest all the grown efo tete and she told me my money is N700. I was not happy at all cos I know she will sell all those efo for nothing less than N6000 when she get to town. I collected the N700 and made up my mind never to sell for anyone of those women again.
So today I just went to pluck few, use a small rope to bind them into 5 places, before I could get home from the farm, I sold everything. I have to go back to farm to pluck more and I placed it in front of my wife's shop, she sold everything and more people are still coming to ask for more saying it looks very fresh and bigger than what they used to buy before.
I'm happy I made N3700 sales today, I'm going to pluck more tomorrow
Retail marketing is the best dear brother. Those market women are cheaters who will always take advantage of you. Try to work and on where to sell your vegetable on retail apart from your wife's shop if your vegetable farm is producing more

My own worker is a drunkard and can't take emergency deciton unless he reach out to me ! ( I lost my 3 acres of maize to rodent attack due to his stupidity)

I'm planning of ordering some drip irrigation materials from AliExpress since I can't get around here in osun

My farm is at isero. Ola oluwa local government
I have some drip materials for sale and can guide you to get the ones I don't have at a good price in Ibadan. You can easily get any irrigation materials here.

How can I reach you?
AgricultureRe: One Million From My Dry Season Tomato Farm by Simfglobal(op): 11:46am On Jan 17, 2023
When it comes to farm workers, I learnt by experience and it was very costly.

I hope someone will learn from my experience below.

Last year dry season, after spending heavily on Borehole and irrigation equipment, I decided to start with a plot before expanding.

I didn't have access to permanent workers so I gave the work to a nearby togo guy to make bed for me.

Firstly, he was questioning why I want to make bed, what I want to plant and other nonsense questions. I had a plan and time to carry out each task.

I gave him half of his money he promised to start, so I prepared my nursery tray for cucumber and tomato.

He did only two rows of bed and nothing more. I expressed my anger and told him I work with time. I had to lay my drip and transplant the few cucumbers the bed can accommodate.

Meanwhile, he challenged my usage of seed tray too, that I'm wasting money. That he can teach me to plant cucumber.
A month later, He didn't do anything than those two rows.

I lost the all the seedlings in the seed tray which amounts to thousands and I couldn't earn a dime from the cultivation because I ended eating the two rows with my family.

I tried to get workers especially permanent ones but I don't get so I used the land to cultivate maize and later planted pepper and tomatoes around June.

Meanwhile, I have other farms which are mainly cassava farms.

I will drop my pen here

What is the situation report on the established farmland?would visit for partnership soon, pls update me on whatsapp +2349034612092 or unclemoringa@gmail.com
I will chat you up on whatsapp.

We paused a bit in our project to:
1. ensure we establish as many market channels for our produce when harvest commences.

2. avoid harvesting and selling when there is glut which is from January to march. Currently a crate of tomatoes is now 3k - 4k Big hausa basket of about 60kg is now less than 10k in Ibadan. Though it's still profitable a little for those who can manage their farms well.

3. Get workers as we are still very short of workers for this project considering the area of land and the types of crops we want to cultivate.

What is opv and hybrid?
OPV means open pollinated variety, that the variety planted in the north. It has less disease resistant but it can don well in dry season.
The seed is also cheap.

Hybrid on the other hand is more productive, has higher disease resistant but the seeds are very expensive, though you will get your money back of you practice good agricultural practices

Where do you intend selling your produce
I have several strategies for marketing my produce. But let me put them in two categories,

1. Premium markets. Those who can buy at good and stable price. Meaning I will sell per kg to them.
I've surveyed about 100 schools to sell minimum of 1000kg per week

I'm also doing commission sales, where some group of people in certain estates sell to their neighbors and earn commission. Plus other premium markets I've mapped out.

2. Open market.
Markets here are open every five days for buying and selling. I have up to four markets to take my goods to in a week.

Let me give us a summary of what is available on the farm.

Currently, the following are available on the farm.
1. two Boreholes
2. Water tank
3. Irrigation system

The farm is 10 acres, 3 acres cleared already with no trees at all.
The plan is to plant vegetables like cucumber, pepper, tomatoes, sweetcorn, cabbage and spices like onion, etc. My plan is to plant all year round.

My plan is to go fully organic but for now, I cannot but will reduce my chemical usage to minimum level.

My farm is in outskirt of Ibadan, in a local government called Ido. I will welcome those who will like to visit when the project fully commence especially those in Ibadan.

I'm still short of workers on the farm, I will appreciate those who can be if helps regarding this.

So I will start with the report of the small scale Tomato.
Hope you are following.

Hello everyone, I'm Farmer Oluwaseun, I've really benefited from nairaland from inspiring stories to tips in Agriculture. I've been following nairaland since my undergraduate days, infact I influenced my younger brother with nairaland and he is now a passionate lover of naira land too.

I've attended several practical training on vegetables, however this is my first time of going into vegetable in full scale, though I've planted in small scale to have more experience

I will be sharing pictures of my small scale Tomato farm on this thread

I'm a passionate farmer and I love to farm Profitably, I've been planting maize and cassava for for more than five years now.

I'm calling @farmerakinloye6, @ideepaul, @grandpoh, @oluchidelly, @aquadude15 and others to contribute as I update is daily on the activities of the tomato farm
