JayB007: Good morning house, majority of my tomato plants are like this. What could be the cause and what are the solutions? @farmerakinloye6 and others pls My oga, let me be sincere with you sir. This tomato is gone. This is TOMATO YELLOW LEAF CURL VIRUS. Most of the tomatoes will not grow again once affected, and the ones that struggle to grow will struggle to produce any meaningful fruits. Remove the affected ones and spray against white fly. If most of the tomatoes are affected, just prepare to do another nursery. |

mcyemite: this year is actually going to be different kinda off ...the tomatoe calendar for this year is already ruined ,although it's not advisable to borrow money to fund tomato cultivation I however still believe tomato will still sell for very good price till end of the year...because the main supply line has be critically hit this year, before thing goes back to normality will be next year...
I saw a programme on nta 100s of tomato farmers are vowing to never cultivate Tomato again in the north until the government find a way to help them with tuta absoluta ,more than 5000000 hectares was lost to tuta absoluta this year...
So I will implore western farmer to keep cultivating Well said |

alexanderrguian: Honest Review of the services of providing farm workers by kpas4kpas2
After seeing a feedback from @farmerakinloye6 our reputable farmer here, that @ kpas4kpas2 was able to supply him 2 workers so I decided to try him I paid advanced payment for two workers , the agreement was that I ll pay 15k for each worker and upon delivery I pay the balance of 15k on each worker. The experience was not a palatable one at all after giving him a long rope to redeem himself, I just have to come to a conclusion that he is a scammer.
I sent him 30k on the first of june 2023 and he was supposed to send the workers a day or two after receiving the payment. I told him if he delivers I will still need 3-5 workers more. Then the story started. He wanted to start working on the extra workers but I told him to send the 2 available first. He even told me he was likely going to send 3 workers so that when they get to the park i ll send another 15k to cover for the 3rd person. But I insisted not to send 3 people , he should just deliver the 2 I paid for first cos I got workers elsewhere when he was delaying After his phone was not reachable , he eventually called me with his wife's number and gave a story before noon that finally He sent me 1 worker and I took delivery of the guy on the 5thof June 2023.He as supposed to send one more person so I can pay him the balance of 30k but that was not forth coming By the time it was next morning ,the so called worker came with a story that he is a student and his result just came out ,the the brother called him that he need to come and rectify something on his result as the name on the result is different from his name, so I should give him money to go back and rectify his result and then come back. It was so funny to me and I knew he is a scammer, so I ignored him. Before I knew what was happening he left the farm, so I called him and asked him where he got money as he claimed he doesnt have transport back, he started asking me to send him money that at least he worked for one day . (HE DON SEE MUMU) Eventually the kpas4kpas2 guy (moniker on naira land, his real name is ALAKU ALFRED AKPAS LUKA) apologized and said he send another worker. So I started waiting for him and made alternative arrangement for another 4 workers elsewhere which came within 3 days. The last time I called him , he told me the guy has finished what he went to do and looking for money to come back, I didnt buy the story , in order words I shd send money for transport . Till today 7th July 2023 (more than one month and one week) I haven't heard from him on supply of any worker . neither did he return my 30k fee. So please be careful to deal with him I have same experience like twice too, though with different person. No worker to farm as planned this year. Just doing the best I can do on my own. Please how can I contact you? |

REUBEN010: RISK MANAGEMENT. A lot of us have other enterprises. Aside tomatoes, some of us here cultivate pepper, watermelon, yam, cucumber etc. I have 1 acre of pepper in addition to my 2 acres of tomatoes of different ages but we don't need to start showing off all our enterprises. Besides, do you think the local seed farmers expend all the resources (staking, time and agro chemicals) we expend on our hybrid tomatoes? Imagine what is currently happening to the sole cropping tomato farmers up North that are currently ravaged by Tuta absoluta (tomato Ebola). This is the reason many diversify into other enterprises to spread our risks and we don't jump out to declare all our enterprises. A 2plots tomatoes farmer may have 10 acres of cassava elsewhere. You are on point my brother |

@reuben010, the purported import from neighbouring countries that hit the FP few days ago coupled with the little availability of local breed in the markets, this is gradually crashing the price. i sold 14.5k on sat. Yes, the watery small non-hynrid |

REUBEN010: In my opinion, drenching the plants and fruits with a fungicide combination of copper + mancozeb will contain it. You can alternate with bluesnow or five star fungicides. Remember to spray regularly.
For prevention, avoid handling your crops during the cooler part of the day (morning and late evening). You can transmit the disease rapidly when you handle the wet leaves. Exactly what I will recommend, but in addition, be careful if the dosage of the fungicides being applied. It's better to apply in small doses regularly |

You are right o....the drought plus sun intensity is super. We hope the price of tomatoes will compensate farmers for their wahala.
It rain once here this month so far, the once can not even be used for transplanting. Almost two weeks now, no rain.
A local farmer here prepared nursery of tomatoes if about 15,000 seedlings, as I'm typing now, he can't boast of 500 tomatoes well established.
What can we do to maintain our tomatoes in times like this to have maximum yield |

tessy990: I did the transplanting march 31st, and I started noticing this on Tuesday. I will ask the following questions based on experience: 1. Did you spray herbicide during your land preparation? That's my prime suspect. 2. Is your water clean, hope it's not treated with any chemical. Did you irrigate well? 3. Are there any undecomposed weed or leaves under your bed? 4. Lastly, but not likely...it could be nematodes, remove the dying ones immediately and check their Roots. My humble submission sir |

Cizarr: (1). Please my question is that, can I spray the land because of weeds before transplanting the tomatoes. (2). Can I plant the tomatoes naw at this period without irrigation system, will the rain be enough for it at this particular time.
@Farmerakinloye6 @Simfglobal You can't plant tomato now without irrigation. Tomato does not like too much water like that but need enough water for at least two weeks to become fully established after transplanting, and rain is not falling now. Secondly, I will advice you don't use herbicide to prepare your soil, herbicide used to prepare land for transplanting have residual effects on tomatoe. I lost more than 200 seedling to this. |

Only experts can use contact herbicide to kill the weeds within the row while you use hand to weed the beds You can spray contact herbicide on pepper but you must be very careful too |
Agriculture › Re: Raining Season Maize by Simfglobal: 4:48pm On Mar 21, 2023 |
Zerofarm: Good morning Nairalander’s
I’m in a confused state as I have like 4m I wanted to use for agriculture this year I wanted to plant the raining season maize but people are saying that raining maize is unprofitable and marketers don’t buy raining season maize unlike dry season maize that I wont make profit. Please have anyone planted raining season maize here and sell it as fresh maize before and was able to sell everything and make profit ? I wanted to do the farm in Ibadan fully mechanized but I’m worried I might not be able to sell when it’s ready by June/July or so If you truly have 4m to invest in agriculture, then you have good capital to start Farming maize, but I will give my candid advice in the following points based on my experience. I will tell you how profitable maize is and how you can do it but hear the following first. 1. Do you have any experience in agriculture,? Have you farmed before? If the answers are NO, then you need to have good knowledge about maize farming and the best way is never by investing all your 4m at once, but rather Start small and learn the ropes yourself, don't be like me when I just entered the farming business. I wish you can see my heart ❤️ 2. If you don't want to start small, get a practical farmer who is farming profitably with proofs and let him guide you while you carry out his instructions and learn at same time and don't forget to appreciate such person. I'm available if you don't mind. 3. Don't be a proxy farmer, hmmm, again never think of being a proxy farmer. By proxy farmer I mean a farmer that only send money for labourers to work and visit once in a while. If you do that, you will surely learn the hard way. Ensure you are available to manage your farm Every day as farming is like every other business. 4. if you want to cultivate fresh maize and make profit: a) avoid getting land in far areas. Get land in a place that is easily accessible to buyers. If you want to sell fresh, dont farm in a far place. Ensure it near to market or access to buyers easily. b) you must be ready to spend heavily on maize to sell fresh and make profit because buyers will not buy maize that are not big, and if they buy, you will be offered ridiculous prices. Most time I sell my maize on the farm. Buyers come to farm to buy. c) you can plant maize twice depending how technical you are and mixed with cassava at the second planting. 5. If you want to sell dry maize, plant by June/July and ensure you mix crop with cassava. Farming this days is not about how many acres oo. It's now about how much you can get from one acre of land. Why plant 10 acres and find it difficult to manage when you can do less and get very great result. Remember again, location is important, if you don't want to be begging buyers to buy from you, let your farmland be where buyers love to go. I have a number of fresh maize sellers now, they buy from me and many other farmers, one farmer cannot satisfy them because they buy daily. Finally, If you want to plant maize to sell it fresh, hi can't just plant a large acres of land at once, else you will be on your own at the end. There are other things you can do sir but this is my candid advice as an experienced farmer of maize, cassava and vegetables. I hate people losing their investment in farming because of nativity, therefore I give free consultation to any new farmer. If this is helpful, chat/call on 0 9 0 7 1 4 1 9 2 2 5 God bless you |
