A total of 23 people have now died from ethanol poisoning blamed on locally brewed gin in southwest Nigeria, the local health commissioner said on Monday. “The total number of deaths is 23,” Ondo state health commissioner Dayo Adeyanju told AFP by telephone. Last Monday the death toll stood at 18. Adeyanju said the five additional deaths were those taken to hospital when all the victims fell ill in the town of Ode-Irele earlier this month and that there were no new cases. The mysterious symptoms and deaths raised fears of a contagious disease but investigations ruled out illnesses such as Ebola and other viral conditions. Symptoms included headache, weight loss, blurred vision and loss of consciousness. All the victims died within a day of falling ill. Leaders of the All Progressives Congress on Thursday failed to reach a decision on the zoning of political offices. They met at the Rivers State Governors’ Lodge at Asokoro, Abuja all through Wednesday night and the early hours of Thursday. The leaders however adjourned the meeting after considering the party’s performance in the last general elections as well as the way forward for this week’s re-run elections in Abia, Imo and Taraba states. It was learnt that they felt more consultations were needed before a final decision could be taken on position sharing. A highly placed member of the party, who spoke to The PUNCH about the meeting, explained that the APC leadership was only being meticulous. The member, who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak on the issues discussed at the meeting , said, “We have to be careful in dealing with such sensitive issues because we must carry everybody along to eliminate the possibility of having aggrieved members who could be used by our opponents. “If you remember, the President-elect, (Muhammadu Buhari) has promised to be the President of those who voted for and against him and even those who did not vote. And in keeping with this promise, we want to come up with what is fair to all like we have done so far. We may meet again today(Thursday) or tomorrow(today).” The PUNCH however gathered that the APC National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun, was mandated to meet with the serving and elected lawmakers of the party to feel their pulse on the zoning of the principal offices in the National Assembly. The meeting which was scheduled for Thursday was postponed for an undisclosed reason. When contacted by one of our correspondents, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed, said, “Like I told you yesterday (Wednesday), our leaders only met to discuss party issues, there was no National Working Committee or National Executive Council meeting. “When we hold such a meeting, we will let you know.” The APC leaders at the meeting were the President- elect, Muhammadu Buhari; the Vice-President-elect, Yomi Osinbajo; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu. Others were a former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Ogbonnaya Onu, publisher of Leadership Newspaper, Sam Nda- Isaiah; the Chairman of the Progressives Governors’ Forum, Rochas Okorocha, Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi; Nasarawa State Governor, Tanko Al- Makura, and Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole. The Chairman Senate Committee on Millennium Development Goals, Ali Ndume, and the governorship candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance for the April 25 re-run election in Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, made surprise appearances at the national secretariat venue of the meeting. Ndume, who is among those being tipped for a leadership position in the incoming 8th Senate, held a closed-door meeting with some leaders of the party. He later told journalists that the North-East where he comes from was seeking for the highest available office. The lawmaker added that as genuine party members, they were prepared to abide by whatever decision the party arrived at on the matter. He said, “Anything that is given to us will be okay. We have contributed so much as a zone. We even prefer to be given the best but we know that the best cannot be given to all. “For instance, we prefer to be given even the presidency but that has been given to another zone and the vice- president also to another zone. “The party is considering all these and we are pushing our case. It is left for the party to decide what is in the best interest of the country which is what the party stands for.” It was not clear why Otti was at the venue of the meeting with the leaders of the APC but insiders believe his visit was to consolidate on a working relationship he has developed with the APC. Meanwhile, a member of National Executive Council of the APC told one of our correspondents that the South-East would not produce any principal officers in the Buhari administration. The NEC member said the inability of the region to produce a senator or a member of the House of Representatives in the April 11 elections shut out the zone from producing any principal officer. The NEC member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that the idea of picking a Peoples Democratic Party senator-elect or House of Representatives-elect as a principal officer was impossible. He said, “The national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Tinubu, has gone to the US. He will also be in London. If Senator Chris Ngige had won his election into the Senate, he would have been an automatic candidate for the senate presidency. “There’s no way a PDP senator or federal lawmaker would be selected for any of the principal posts which include the senate presidency, deputy senate presidency, speaker and deputy speaker. Remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists have run out of arms and ammunitions, as the Nigerians military intensifies attack on Sambiza Forest, an escapee and military sources have revealed. This is even as the Director Defence Information, Major General Chris Olukolade confirmed to newsmen in Abuja that ground troops with support from airstrikes have stormed sambisa forest combing terrorists from their hideouts. Although, Olukolade did not disclosed whether military troops have succeeded in killing or destroying terrorists camps in the ongoing raid which began on Wednesday, an escapee from Tabe village of Damboa local government area who narrowly escaped from the area said “the Boko Haram terrorists have run out of arms and ammunitions as the military intensify attacks on Sambiza Forest”. He said “you can find more than 500 members of the insurgents with only few of them having rifles and even when one or two of them have rifles, it is like a stick, as they have run out of ammunitions, because the usual supplies they get are not forthcoming. “I am optimistic that the military will succeed by killing many of these sect who have been terrorising residents in the past three years in the shores of Sambisa forest””. He stated Another resident of nearby Yamtake village who does not want his name in print told our correspondent that “ As a result of the recent aerial bombardment on the Sambiza forest, many of the sect members including their commanders have fled into the nearby bushes of Yamtake, Tabe and Jangoro villages of Damboa local government area of the state.” He called on the military authorities to come to their aid by mopping up the remnant of the insurgents who fled to these areas before they regroup to unleash terror on innocent villagers. He said “the Boko Haram terrorists have only bow and arrows, matchets, daggers and other local weapons, as they have run out of arms and ammunitions and were roaming about in the bushes of the villages along the fringes of the Sambiza forest”. Meanwhile, a security source from Bama, one of the recaptured local government area in Borno said the Boko Haram has caused a lot of destruction in Bama town, as corpses were scattered all over the streets, some were dumped in destroyed buildings and wells. He said “only few structures still standing, as the terrorists have virtually destroyed all structures in the town. Very soon we are also going to the Sambiza forest for mop up operations, as we have been directed to clear the Sambiza before the May 29handing over dateline”. The sharp drop in power generation from 3,000 megawatts to about 2,988.72MW, has been attributed to low supply of gas to generation companies, Vanguard has learnt According to a source in the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, “The issue with the drop in the megawatts can be attributed to the generation and distorted supply of gas, we have been experiencing for some time now. However, “Most of the country’s thermal and hydro- power plants are dependent on gas for optimum performance to meet the Nigerians’ demands for robust power supply.” In the last four weeks, Vanguard learnt that there has been massive decline in the power supply in some parts of Lagos. Some of the areas affected include, Ajegunle, Ijesa, Oko-afo, Ile-Ipo, Ojo (all areas in Badagry road), Comfort Oboh, Kirikiri town. According to data obtained from the Federal Ministry of Power, electricity supply fell to 2,988.72MW on April 12, while 3,060.37MW was generated that day. Power generation had on March 11 dropped to 2,747.45MW, while 2,676.64MW was distributed to consumers, down from 3,505MW on March 8. Power supply in the country have dipped below the 3,000MW mark for at least five times this year. On February 10, electricity supply plunged to 2,869.84MW as 2,936.83MW was generated that day, according to the Presidential Task Force on Power. On January 11, 2015, generation fell to 2,502.39MW, while 2,449.04MW was sent out. A group, Progressive Lawyers Forum, has offered free legal services to all government agencies responsible for fighting corruption under the incoming Buhari administration. Speaking Thursday at a media briefing, the group’s National Coordinator, Silas Onu, said the pro-bono service will be for government agencies saddled with the responsibility of fighting corruption against public officials, past and present. “To demonstrate our commitment to support the fight against corruption, we have resolved to offer pro-bono legal services to all government agencies,” he said. He said the agencies concerned can take advantage of the offer to cut down the high cost of prosecuting corrupt persons. “There are too many thieves that need to be made an example for prospective ones to learn from, therefore the cases on corruption may overwhelm the internal lawyers of these agencies,” Mr. Onu said. Mr. Onu said the group agreed with the president- elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on the need to halt corruption. The group called for the removal of constitutional immunity presently protecting sitting governors and presidents from facing corruption charges. The group, which is also part of the All Progressives Congress’ legal team, said the incoming National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly should seriously consider the urgent need to remove the immunity clause from the constitution. “This has allowed a window to disregard our laws and encourage impunity,” Mr. Onu said. He asked the president-elect, Mr. Buhari, to be circumspect in appointing the heads of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Independent Corrupt Practices and related offences Commission. As part of the fallout of the Peoples Democratic Party’s failure at the last general elections, top party men are calling for the resignation or removal of the party’s National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu. PDP stalwarts who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH said it behoves on Mua’zu to turn in his resignation letter even without since he had been unable to take the party to victory. The PDP not only lost the presidential election to the opposition, All Progressives Congress, it also lost its National Assembly majority status and governorship seats including state Houses of assembly. But the embattled national chairman, Mu’azu, has said he would not resign despite the loss of the party he leads. Mu’azu said it was also wrong for anyone to call for the sacking of any member of the party’s National Working Committee because of what happened to the ruling party during the elections. PDP chieftains including a former National Vice- Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Edet Nkpubre, former Senior Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Political Affairs, Mr. Ahmed Gulak, state chairmen and stakeholders who spoke with SUNDAY PUNCH, have demanded for the ouster of Mu’azu. Nkpubre, who said this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Saturday, said Mu’azu should resign as the party chairman. The former national vice-chairman, who is from Akwa Ibom State, said, “If you led a nation to a war, and you failed, you should resign. Mu’azu should resign. He allowed the PDP Governors’ Forum to take over the party. The chairman of that forum was virtually directing the party and imposing his will and the will of the so-called governors on the President through the party.” Nkpubre the PDP governors’ forum should be disbanded, adding that unpopular candidates were imposed on the party He stated, “The PDP should be reorganised and you cannot reorganise that party with Mua’zu still there. I predicted that there would be protest votes and that is what is happening today. Jonathan lost because many people were aggrieved. Governors were given unlimited powers and they trample on everybody. “They imposed candidates from state house to the House of Representatives and the Senate as well as their successors.” Gulak also told SUNDAY PUNCH in an interview: “There is no party chairman of the PDP since 1998 that has led the party to such a disastrous outing. As a result, the national chairman should consider himself one of those that have to give way for the new party to come up. In fact, he doesn’t need to be told to turn in his resignation.” A chieftain of the party and governorship aspirant in Ogun State, Mr. Kayode Amusan, also added his voice to the removal of Mua’zu. Amusan, a former member of the House of Representatives, said with the poor performance of the PDP in the last general elections, the most honourable thing for Muazu to do is to resgin. He said, “Look at performance of the party in the whole of the North. He is a chairman that cannot deliver his state. He should cover his face with his hands and resign.” Similarly, the Ogun State PDP chairman, Mr. Adebayo Dayo, said in some other climes when a political party suffered such a defeat that PDP suffered in the recent general elections, the leadership of the party should be considering the option of resigning. Dayo, did not exonerate himself, but said at the state level, the executive council tried its best for the party. He said, “I am not aware of the call for he resignation of the national chairman of the party, Adamu Mu’azu, but it must noted that in any good clime where a political party suffered such a defeat as we witnessed in our party, the leadership should think about resigning. Even including myself.” But Mua’zu, speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Tony Amadi in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Saturday, said rather than quit, he was going to stay behind and reform the troubled party. He accused those who had defected from the PDP to the APC of being impatient, wondering where they were when members of the opposition were building the party. Amadi said, “Those who are asking him to resign, why are they not asking the President to resign immediately he lost election? The chairman will stay back, serve his tern and rebuild the party.” He denied the allegation of imposition in the party, saying many of those making the allegation were not popular in their wards. He vowed that the PDP would remain a formidable opposition “but will not fight dirty.” But one of the founders and PDP chieftain in Oro Federal Constituency, Akwa Ibom State, Sylvester Akaiso, said Muazu has failed the party. According to him, prior to elections, there had been complaints about imposition. He added that instead of Mu’azu addressing the issue, he waved it aside as the party’s affairs. He said it was the imposition that gave birth to people defecting from the party which ultimately resulted in the PDP’s misfortune in the last elections. A former governorship aspirant of the party in Kwara State during the just concluded governorship elections, Mr. John Dara also said Mu’azu should resign owing to the poor performance of the PDP at the just concluded polls. Dara said Mu’azu should resign as he presided over the party’s conduct in an election in which a sitting President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was defeated. He also said Mu’azu should not be the only PDP leader to resign or leave his office, he added that the Board of Trustees and the National Executive Committee of the party should be dissolved while the party should be reorganised. Dara described Mu’azu’ tenure as disastrous. Dara said, “I believe that reasonable thing for Mu’azu to do is to resign. When you preside over a project and it turns into this kind of calamity, it will be honourable to resign. How Buhari Can Arrest Deziani And Okonjo- Iweala On May 29 By Illesanmi Omabomi These two individuals are not the most corrupt members of the now infamous Goodluck Jonathan led presidency—and it will take a very long time before the full extent of the damage done to our economy can be fully established, if at all possible! However, in the case of Deziani and Okonjo-Iweala, the information gleaned from the several House of Representatives investigations into the 10 Billion Naira NNPC plane maintenance contracts, and oil subsidy payments that were not budgeted for provide the incoming President with enough information to order their immediate arrests and have them charged with the appropriate offenses the same day. I can afford to take the risk of concluding that the majority of Nigerians would like to see brought to justice, and swiftly so, the people who brought Nigeria to her knees through the looting of our commonwealth. Many Nigerians are afraid that some, if not most of these looters, may flee the country after May 29, 2015, before investigations are commenced/ concluded. The purpose of this article is to advocate that the President elect, Mohamadu Buhari, should start the blitzkrieg against corruption immediately after concluding his swearing-in ceremony at Eagle Square on May 29, 2015. Based on readily available public information, there is no better way and place to start that fight than the arrest Allison Deziani Madueke and Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala before the end of day on May 29, 2015. Both women are currently serving as minister for Petroleum and Finance respectively. They both represent some of the biggest fishes, yes fishes, in the pond. The new president should demonstrate his commitment to the rule of law and the time limit requirement for charging arrested persons with offences known to law and having such persons presented before a court of law by ensuring that both women appear in the court on Monday June 1, 2015 to enter pleas and apply for bail. (May 29, 2015 being a Friday). Like many other Nigerians, I believe that both women are surely guilty of more heinous offenses than the ones mentioned above. However, arresting and charging them will send a clear and unambiguous message about the ferocity of the incoming President’s war against corruption, yield valuable information into the more complicated investigations and encourage others to step forward and make voluntary disclosures, thereby reducing the time and resources needed for the fight against corruption. The President-Elect can then offer leniency on the basis of voluntary disclosures, have a hiatus of a few days and wait to see if there will be takers of the offer. The majority of Nigerian politicians are cowards and trust me, seeing the powerful Deziani and Okonjo-Iweala charged before the court, they will be lining up to confess. This approach will be cheaper, point you to previously unknown and maybe otherwise never possible to find stolen resources. I believe it will also yield more of the stolen resources. This topic will be fleshed out in full in another article. For me, calling for the arrest and trial of Okonjo- Iweala is personal anguish for me but the nation’s interest must be the over-riding consideration. It is anguish for me because at the tail end of Obasanjo’s presidency she was one of those I sincerely considered worthy of becoming the President or Vice President at the very minimum. How she allowed herself to be sucked into the bowels of Goodluck Jonathan’s rampaging corruption whale is an examination that would have commenced inside her head by now. Let PDP supporters call me what they want and I am not a member of APC. The party I support is the one I believe has the interest of Nigeria at heart. I believe Mohamadu Buhari of APC does at this point in time. Nigerians, including me are eager to see these corrupt and arrogant politicians from all parties who bestrode our political landscape in the recent past like Colossus, feeding fat on our collective inheritance brought to justice and swiftly so. The stoppage or reduction of corruption and the recovery of our stolen resources is critical the efforts to build a sustainable society in which we all have a reasonable chance of achieving our legitimate aspirations. The Orekoya children kidnapped by a nanny, Mary Akinloye, in the Surulere area of Lagos State, have been rescued and reunited with their family. A family source told The PUNCH on Wednesday that they were rescued on Tuesday night. Confirming the incident, the children’s father, Leke, in a telephone interview with our correspondent, laughed as he said the children were undergoing check up at a clinic. ABUJA – The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal that was lodged against Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State by the All Progressives Congress, APC. In their unanimous judgement this morning, a seven- man panel of Justices of the apex court led by Justice John Fabiyi, held that the appeal which challenged Fayose’s election victory, lacked merit. The panel maintained that the APC failed to prove its allegation that the election was fraught with unparalleled irregularities, adding that the allegation that Fayose tendered forged Higher National Diploma Certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was not proved beyond every reasonable doubt.
