The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) will unveil a new coach for the Super Eagles in July, it has been revealed. Chris Green, the NFF Technical and Development Committee chairman, has given firm assurances that they would make sure that all the issues around naming a new manager for the Super Eagles were sorted unfailingly by next month. The Super Eagles have been without a substantive coach since Sunday Oliseh resigned and according to Green a lot of applications have been received for the vacant post. “We have submitted our recommendation to the NFF executive board members after receiving a lot of applications from coaches who have shown interest in the job,” Green revealed. At the moment, Salisu Yusuf has been in charge of the Eagles in interim capacity with the duo of Rangers coach, Imama Amapakabo, and Abia Warriors manager, Kennedy Boboye, assisting. Super Eagles are in a tough group for Russia 2018 World Cup qualifiers together with Zambia’s Chipolopolo, Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions and Algeria’s Desert Foxes. Meanwhile, while the federal government might have foreclosed the hope of hiring a foreign coach, the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation is at only at cross purposes on who to appoint, but bent on hiring a foreigner. This is because Amaju Pinnick, NFF President, favours the appointment of Serbian’s Goran Stefanovic, while the Technical Committee headed by Chris Green wants Frenchman, Paul Le Guen. Pinnick is keen on the Serb’s abilities due to his wealth of experience especially in Africa and affordability in comparison to other coaches who will demand higher wages. However members of the Technical Committee are convinced that Le Guen is the most qualified for the job based on his pedigree and heroics with Cameroun in the run up to the 2010 World Cup where he qualified them from an almost impossible situation after taking over the job midway through the qualifiers. The committee members believe that Le Guen has the pedigree that will naturally command respect from players of the Super Eagles which will help bring the much needed sanity and discipline the football house is trying to instill in the senior national team. http://9jaspecial.com.ng/2016/06/29/nff-name-super-eagles-coach-july/ |
PORT HARCOURT : ONE of Africa ’s finest novelist,
poet and dramatist Captain Elechi Amadi died
Wednesday at the Good Heart hospital in Port
Harcourt at the age of 82.
A member of the family , Bar Wabueze Amadi,
confirmed the development to the Vanguard
newspaper on phone, saying he passed on at
about 345pm at the hospital.
The late captain Elechi Amadi was among the first
generation of African writers and novelists.
Some of his works were The Concubine,
The Great Ponds, Isiburu, Sunset in Biafra,
Dance of Johannesburg, Peppersoup, The
Road to Ibadan, The Slave , Estrangement
and the Woman of Calaber.
He celebrated his 80th birthday in Port
Harcourt, in 2014 releasing a souvenir
edition of one of his plays, Isiburu to mark
his 80th birthday.
He was born on 12 May, 1934 in Aluu
community, Ikwerre local government area.
He attended Government college , Umuahia
and went to the University college, Ibadan
where he bagged a BSc degree in Physics
and Mathematics.
He served in the 3rd Marine Commandos of
the Nigerian Army. He was first
Commissioner for Education in the old Rivers state
and also served as Commissioner for Lands and
Housing
He had several honours to his credit. He was
Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Education and a
Member of the Order of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria .
He was awarded a honorary doctorate degree by
the University of Port Harcourt in 2011.
He was abducted by unknown gunmen in 2008
and later released after some days in their custody.
He lived in his community, Aluu until his death.
The Director General, NIMASA, Dr Dakuku Peterside
described him as a great Nigerian who will be
greatly missed.
His words, “Captain Elechi Amadi, certainly was a
man of many parts who touched lives in many
ways. And he will be remembered for good by
many people who met him physically or through
his books. He was a well known author, publisher,
soldier and statesman who was concerned about a
better society.
“My generation will definitely remember him more
for his great books like the Concubine, the Great
Ponds, Sunset in Biafra, Estrangement, the Slave
and a collection of poems.
“It is regrettable that Amadi passed away at a time
when Rivers, our dear state is still far away from
the aspirations of its founding fathers like him and
most sons and daughters of the state. There is no
doubt that Elder Elechi Amadi and other founding
fathers will be weeping in their graves at the state
of Rivers State. Nigeria and the international
literary community has lost a creative giant.
“The departed patriot, no doubt, had a remarkable
life and he will surely be remembered for serving
humanity with literature and his interventions.
May his soul find eternal rest in the Lord.” http://9jaspecial.com.ng/2016/06/29/breaking-news-elechi-amadi-dies-82/ |

The Super Eagles will play Zambia’s
Chipolopolo, Cameroon’s Indomitable
Lions
and Algeria’s Fennecs in the final round
of
qualification series for the 2018 FIFA
World
Cup finals.
In what is already dubbed the group of
death
by pundits, the three-time African
champions,
who will not play in next year’s Africa
Cup of
Nations in Gabon, face a tough route to
qualify for Russia 2018 given the high
quality
of their opponents in the group.
The draw conducted at the Cairo
Marriott
Hotel put all former African champions
in the
same Group B, with reigning
continental
champions Cote d’Ivoire to tackle
Gabon, Mali
and Morocco in Group C.
Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles head Group
A that
also includes Libya, Democratic
Republic of
Congo and Guinea, and Ghana’s Black
Stars
will do battle with the Pharaohs of
Egypt,
Congo’s Red Devils and Uganda’s
Cranes in
Group E.
Senegal’s Teranga Lions, which
reached the
World Cup quarter –finals in its debut
in
2002, head Group D that also includes
South
Africa’s Bafana Bafana, Burkina Faso’s
Etalons
and Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks.
“It is a tough draw, but then I have
always
said that you have to beat the best to
get to
the World Cup. Now we have the draw,
we
know how to prepare. The preparation
has to
start right now and we must make
good use
of every single day leading to the kick
–off of
the series. “The other pools are tough
as well,
because for me, you can never afford to
under
–rate any team these days. Now we
must
quickly sort out the issue of Head
Coach and
his assistants and put every other
thing in
place in good time,” NFF president
Amaju
Pinnick said.
Algeria knocked Nigeria out of the race
to the
1982 FIFA World Cup, but Nigeria also
overpowered Algeria to qualify for the
1994
finals in USA.
Nigeria beat Algeria 3-0 to lift her first
–ever
Africa Cup of Nations title, on home
soil in
1980, but the Fennecs avenged by
beating the
Eagles 1-0 to also nick their first
African title,
on home soil, ten years later.
Cameroon stopped Nigeria from
reaching the
1990 FIFA World Cup finals, winning
1-0 in
Yaounde in a group contest even
though
Nigeria won the home leg 2-0 in
Ibadan.
In Yaounde, only weeks after the death
of
Samuel Okwaraji, Nigeria needed a
draw to
shove aside the Lions but lost 1-0. In a
friendly in Belgium in October last year,
the
Super Eagles steamrolled the Lions
3-0. http://9jaspecial.com.ng/2016/06/25/eagles-group-death-world-cup/ |

Brazil coach Dunga was sacked on Tuesday
after the Selecao’s humiliating group-stage
elimination from the Copa America
Centenario.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said in a
statement it had decided to fire Dunga and
“dissolve the Brazilian national team’s
coaching staff” following their latest debacle.
The news came after CBF officials met with
Dunga earlier on Tuesday.
The exit from the Copa America centennial
edition in the United States was the latest
blow to demoralised, recession-hit Brazil,
which is still reeling from the national
team’s 7-1 World Cup semi-final thrashing
by Germany on home soil in 2014.
After an opening 0-0 draw with Ecuador was
followed by a 7-1 win over Haiti, Brazil
needed a draw with Peru on Monday to
reach the quarter-finals but instead crashed
out of the tournament after controversially
losing 1-0 to a disputed goal.
Speculation had swirled that Dunga was on
his way out, but the coach said he was not
afraid of the sack.
“I am only afraid of death,” Dunga told
reporters.
Brazil are now left searching for a new
coach just weeks away from hosting the
Olympics in August, seeking to win football
gold for the first time.
Dunga, 52, won the Copa America twice as a
player and was captain of Brazil’s 1994
World Cup-winning squad. http://9jaspecial.com.ng/football/brazil-sack-dunga-after-copa-america-exit/ |

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Sunday said true federalism was the only way to drive democracy in the country. Mr. Ambode, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Tunji Bello, made the assertion at the 23rd anniversary of the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential Elections. The programme was organised by the state’s Office of Civic Engagement under the Deputy Governor’s Office with the theme: “Democracy and Inclusiveness — Basis for Good Governance.” “We still have a long way to go in our country today and that is because we are not practicing true federalism. And for us to achieve that, we need to work really hard. “We must ensure that we install a viable federalism in Nigeria, that is the only way to build and enjoy our democracy as well as honour the memory of late MKO Abiola,” he said. Mr. Ambode said that his administration would strive to uphold the ideals of June 12 by ensuring the expansion of the frontiers of democratic governance and social justice. Also speaking, Ndubuisi Kanu, a former Military Governor of Lagos State, said that the practice of true federalism was the solution to the challenges facing the country. “Whatever is happening now in the country either militancy, IPOB or others will not stop until we go back to the Nigeria that we are expected to build; a federal Nigeria. “We should brace up and be prepared. Prayers alone will not solve the problem. We have to get back to a federal Nigeria,” Mr. Kanu, retired Rear Admiral, said. In his contribution, Ayo Opadokun, Convener of the Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reforms, said that restructuring was the solution to country’s challenges. “After 23 years, those who denied Nigerians the opportunity of true democracy are still living and are in government positions. “But it is sad to note that they have not done anything to correct the mistakes from the lessons of June 12. “June 12 will continue to be relevant until Nigerians are given the opportunity to decide their fate in the country and that is when Democracy would have been enthroned,’’ he said. Mr. Opadokun urged President Muhammadu Buhari to direct the Independent Electoral Commission to announce Abiola as the winner of June 12, 1993 election as well include his name in the names of past presidents of Nigeria. In his lecture, Olumuyiwa Noah, a lecturer at the University of Lagos, urged elders in the country to narrate the story of June 12 to the younger generation to curb electoral malpractices. “We owe it a duty to tell the story of June 12 to our young ones who are ignorant of what transpired so that they are aware; and in future, elections malpractices will be curbed,” the professor said. In his remarks, Kehinde Joseph, Special Adviser to Governor Ambode on Civic Engagement, said that the anniversary was to keep the essence and lessons of democratic experience alive. The June 12, 1993 presidential election was annulled by former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, before the final announcements of results. Initial results released showed that Moshood Abiola, a billionaire philanthropist, had an unassailable lead over his then opponent, Bashir Tofa. Mr. Abiola, who later died in government custody, is believed by most Nigerians to have won the election, considered one of the freest and fairest in Nigeria. http://9jaspecial.com.ng/news-updates/only-true-federalism-can-resolve-nigerias-problems-ambode/ |
In this piece, All Progressives Congress (APC)
chieftain Hon. Niran Sule-Akinsuyi says the
spirit of ‘June 12’ frustrated the antics of anti-
democratic forces in last year’s presidential
election. Tribute to all those who played vital roles in the making of this historic event; and those who sacrificed their life for democracy including their families. The story of June 12 cannot be complete without recognising their roles- I mean political associates, patriots and Pro- democracy activists who were sympathetic to the cause of June 12 and the strugAs a member of the Ondo State House of Assembly in the Third Republic, and a state delegate to the Social Democratic Party convention held in Jos where Chief MKO Abiola emerged as the party’s flagbearer, I am familiar with the political exploits culminating in the June 12, 1993 presidential elections which Chief MKO Abiola presumably won. Today, it is clear that the struggle by NADECO, the Nigeria Press and other Pro-democracy activities was not a labour in vain. June 12 is an unforgettable political event in Nigeria, and has taught us useful political lesson which helped Nigeria to learn more about peace, unity, and respect for one another. It has brought about the emergence of two presidential candidates of two major political parties (Chief Olu Falae APP and Chief Olusegun Obasanjo PDP) from the same geo-political zone – the South-West-in the general election of a multi ethnic nation like Nigeria. Such was the importance of June 12 as a lesson of history. June 12 erased the idea of political discrimination, the cornerstone of the multifaceted problems besetting the country and provided a platform for ethnic minority like Ijaw to be Vice President and President of this great country. Genuine concern aimed at restructuring Nigeria took off from the making of June 12; contrary to the current agitation designed to distract the Buhari Administration. We should see how we can consolidate on the gains and sacrifices made by patriotic Nigerians involved in the making of June 12 by giving every Nigerian a sense of belonging. Never again will any election be cancelled or annulled in Nigeria by reason of birth, circumstances, or ethnic region where the winner comes from. Never again will Nigerians allow their leader to convert the political space into a laboratory for trying all manner of selfish political experiment. The lesson of June 12 frustrated the evil plans of the likes of Orubebe who had thought that government machinery or federal might could be used to thwart the will of Nigerians in the April 2015 presidential election the same way machinery of government was used to annul the June 12 1993 Presidential elections. We hail the heroes of June 12, we hail patriotic Nigerians who believed in the lesson of June 12 and have imbibed the spirit behind it. Shouting restructuring barely one year into the life of this administration is a story the proponents should not expect Nigerians to buy. As a nation we ridiculously spent the sum of N9billion on a conference to discuss this subject in 2014. Regrettably no machinery was put in place to consider or implement its recommendation before the Jonathan administration was alternated through the ballot system. In our political history we have had many struggles; the struggle for independence from colonisation, the struggle for unity during the civil war years, the struggle for constitutional government and democracy, and we are currently in a struggle for good governance and economic development. Any economic or political theory that fails to appreciate the current struggles is shallow. Those clamouring for restructuring should find accommodation under the current struggle for good governance and economic development. Restructuring alone cannot sit on one leg of the tripod; other vices must also be eliminated. Local government funds are siphoned East, North and West of Nigeria the same way our governors dispense security votes with impunity across the length and breathe of the country. The same goes for the bailout funds release by the Buhari administration for the payment of workers’ salaries but diverted in about 22 states. Restructuring will not provide answers to the fatal looting of our treasury. It has not been established that the Federal structure is the root cause of corruption in Nigeria. From the courts presently, public officers from Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba, Ijaw land etc are undergoing trials and prosecution for corruption. Local government elections in Nigeria are not won by political parties in opposition in the states, contrary to all the hues and cries for electoral reforms. What is required from the leadership in Nigeria is honesty and sincerity of purpose in accordance with the oath of office of public officers, like what President Muhammadu Buhari is currently offering Nigerians. I feel proud as a Nigerian listening to the opinion of the Archibishop of Canterbury about our President. I feel proud when Obama introduced him as “the President of Nigeria; a man of integrity”. Nigeria is a blessed nation full of opportunities, abundant potentials and God- given endowments. Nigeria needs decent men to run the apparatuses of government to make life better for people. Issues such as constitutional amendments to reduce federal powers, modify revenue allocation formula, allowing state police etc could be handled by the National Assembly, if that is the desire and wishes of Nigerians. Any of the federating states obviously would not require restructuring to be prudent and faithful to their people, embark and engage in massive food production and provide good governance free from corruption and embezzlement. Niran Sule-Akinsuyi is a governorship aspirant in Ondo State, former member Ondo State House of Assembly and Commissioner for Special Duties |

The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, will be in Nigeria between Thursday and Friday to highlight the growing threat Boko Haram poses to the country. This is contained in a statement by the Information Unit, U.S. Embassy in Abuja and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. It stated that Power had earlier visited Cameroon and Chad between April 16 and 20 to underscore the rising danger the insurgence poses to the Lake Chad Basin region. “Boko Haram is one of the deadliest terrorist groups in the world. “ It poses an acute threat to civilians across the Lake Chad Basin, and the group’s increasing lethality and relationship with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are cause for alarm,” it stated. It noted with sadness the second anniversary of the kidnapping of the Chibok Girls. The statement stressed the the need to work with partners in the region to develop a comprehensive counter- Boko Haram effort. It stated that this included a more coordinated military campaign, improved humanitarian access and response, a well- resourced stabilization and governance strategy. It stated that Power would engage with the Nigerian leadership and civil society in Abuja before traveling to the northeast to visit a settlement camp for civilians displaced by Boko Haram’s violence. Power, according to the statement, will host a town-hall meeting with students and participate in a ‘Peace Through Sports’ event with young Nigerians.
