Celebrities / Charles Novia Writes On Tiwa Savage And Teebillz Saga by simtosul: 11:56am On Apr 30, 2016
I watched the video interview of Tiwa Savage. And I have a few thoughts on it.

Seems to me that the basic idea, coming from a PR perspective, was to pull a fast Olivia Pope ish on the scandal which broke a few hours ago. And understandably so. Tiwa Savage is a Brand Ambassador for a few top brands such as MTN, Pepsi and Pampers.

Whatever the negative fallout of this impending and scandalous divorce , it’s going to have some downside a bit on the brands she campaigns for. So a fast ‘tell-my-side-of-the-story mode’ had to be employed and fast too.

I don’ t know if a professional PR person was involved with the packaging but it was tacky. Not professionally done, in my opinion. I’m not harping on what she said, as those things are her personal heart cry and she has a right of reply but I’m more interested in the optics of what has been put out.

First, perhaps in a bid to elicit some linear empathy or something, Tiwa was made to think that looking humble and contrite corresponds with tying a dormitory scarf on her head and looking casual in a T Shirt was a good way to send the message home. I think it only demystified her brand more. This is a video which would be watched for years to come and even more so by her kid. Having tried so hard to be a Beyonce clone in Nigeria (and that’s my perception of her artistic projections all these years), she should have known too that Beyonce never plays with her optics in any way. That scarf and sombre look wasn’t the right optics, if you ask me. There are more visually acceptable ways of projecting a diva’s side of the story and her PR team ( if she has any) messed it up there.

I’m asking myself too if the proprietary of having such an interview twenty four hours after the scandal was advisable. For many, it wouldn’t matter but for some, perhaps a little dignified silence would have been advisable. Ma’am, you are supposed to be pop queen. You be ‘ Dorodiva’ . A simple press statement that you and your family would love to have your privacy respected at these trying period and bla bla bla would have kept everyone a bit cool till a proper interview surfaces. Recent clamping up lessons from Toke Makinwa would have helped.

And the spilling though! I really have nothing to say on that much. First, every marriage has peculiar challenges. And couples try to work things out till the pressure point either makes the marriage go South or force the brakes for reconciliation.

I have written many times about couples, especially celebrity couples who ‘flash and form’ seemingly pristine lifestyles on social media and I always end my homilies with the caveat that incessant kudos by one or even both partners to each other on social media at the slightest opportunity, are indications of a festering problem in that marriage. It’s the way it is here. The guy can be pummeling the wife every morning and she still would go up on social media to post his picture with words like ‘the only one for me…my lover, my life’. Incredible.

In her interview, Tiwa said she dreaded his birthdays or wedding anniversaries because of “what people would say”. Sad, when a marriage is predicated on keeping up appearances for the public when it should actually be more private for both couples.

Like I said, what she said in the interview is her right of reply. I would sympathise with her beyond the cosmetic sympathies she’s getting from fans, friends and fiends. She wanted a fairy tale life, worked hard to build it but found out that she was kissed by a frog who didn’t turn out to be the Prince she desired. My sympathy would be on the truncation of that dream and really not the nightmare she woke up from. Because she created it with him. And it had its entertainment value for the fans who lapped it all up.

He was still legally married, from reports back then which were either squashed or played down, yet did she ignore the alarm bells and went ahead to marry him “after the traditional introduction”? Was the celebration in far away Dubai just a reception for the introduction perhaps and not the legal nuptials? I stand to be corrected on this?

It’s the classic case of the gullible girls always falling for the bad guys. And when you ask the question why such girls fall into that trap, they would reply that ‘I thought I could change him. That he would change’. Shiooor! His father could not change him, his mother could not change him but it’s you and your ikebe that will now change him?

The gods are wise!

She has denied the allegations of the trysts she purportedly had with Don Jazzy, Dr Sid and Tuface. Just as well too. Because I’m sure those guys must have had some temporary flaccidity after Tee’s ‘depressed’ rant. Person go just siddon e own and next tin your name go dey for somebody gbanshing list! Na wa o.

And hasn’t this marital incubus taken its toll on her career in the past year? I think it has. In my opinion, this last album of Tiwa is crap. It’s quite a flat album. And it’s being received as such since its release in December. Perhaps the matrimonial shenanigans distracted the focus.

It’s going to be hard work to rebuild her career from here on. Hard work.

But she could just reinvent her career . She seems like one who came into the scene with a ferocious focus to be on top. And she was arguably the biggest female act on the scene before perhaps a personal yearn for emotional fulfilment veered her off the path. And in trying to make a comeback, it hasn’t been easy. The fans have limited patience and other female rivals have come on the scene.

Somehow, some comic relief seems to have come out of this. And it is perhaps culinary by inference. ‘ Edible Catering’. Talk about choking on one’s swallow! No pun intended.

I do not know how people psycho-analysed that Tee Blizz’s instagram rants were as a result of depression. It seemed like a drunken or spaced-out outcry to me when I read it. And an accompanying recant on twitter later that his account was hacked seemed too like some silly sobriety thereafter. It’s high time these celebrities stop using the hacking excuse to cover up for infantile indiscretion.

In all of this, I do feel some little sympathy for the couple. But there is a larger lesson to be learnt from all this by them and intending couples too ; stop trying to keep up with The Joneses when in actual fact you have forgotten that you are The Jegedes. Keep the ish real.

Oh….and if Tee Blizz was really hovering around the Lekki Ikoyi bridge as reported, for a suicide swim from which he was saved by Banky and others, then I would advise a whole squad or eagle – eyed friends to surround all bridges in Lagos after this Tiwa’s interview.

She cleaned him out. Finished his ass like he messed up hers the day before.

Dude’s likely to see any bathtub as a river after he watches that video.

Health / 8 Important Ways To Drive Cancer Far Away From Yourself by simtosul: 6:33am On Apr 30, 2016
There was once a time cancer was
considered the ‘White man’s sickness’. In
Nigeria, it was nearly impossible to hear that
the cause of one’s death was cancer…not
anymore.
In more recent times, though, there have been
approximately 100,000 new recorded cases of
cancer yearly, in Nigeria alone. The most
common forms of cancer among women are
the cervical and breast, while for men, it is the
prostate.
Below are some ways of reducing the risk of
getting cancer:

1. NO CARBONATED DRINKS
Regular intake of carbonated drinks increases
the amount of insulin produced by the
pancreas and can double the risk of
developing pancreatic cancer. It could increase
a man’s chance of developing prostate cancer
by around 40 per cent.
Drinking just one-and-a-half cans a day can
increase a girl’s breast cancer risk by five per
cent. Some chemicals that are used to colour
soft drinks can cause cancer.

2. REDUCE INTAKE OF PROCESSED FOOD
Many substances are added to foods to
prolong shelf and storage life and to enhance
colour, flavour and texture. Some of these
substances are carcinogens: “substances or
agents capable of causing cancer”.

3. AVOID SMOKE BY ALL MEANS
Smoke enters the body either by inhalation or
digestion. When foods like suya, smoked fish
or any other smoked food is eaten, you digest
the smoke. Smoke is a serious risk factor of
cancer. The reason for smoking food is to
preserve or enhance colour and flavour.
Also, smoke can be inhaled either primarily or
secondarily. When someone lights a cigarette
and takes a puff of it, that person is known as
the primary smoker and anyone around any
form of smoke is a secondary inhaler or
smoker. Either way, smoke inhalation takes
place.
Of the more than 7,000 chemicals in tobacco
smoke, at least 250 are known to be harmful,
including hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide,
and ammonia. Among the 250 known harmful
chemicals in tobacco smoke, at least 69 can
cause cancer.
Once you get into a car that has been parked
or has been in the sun for a while with the
windows rolled up, always roll down the
window immediately you get inside. This is
because the cells in the body split and
regenerate every few minutes and if the stale
and radioactive air in the car is not let out, the
cells will split in an unconducive environment
and cancer may set in.

4. STAY OFF RADIATION
The most common appliances used by people
are the microwave, laptop and mobile phone.
These appliances emit electronic radiation,
which is a major risk factor of cancer. We
bring these devices in close contact with parts
of our bodies. Mobile phones emit
radiofrequency energy (radio waves), a form of
non-ionizing radiation, from their antennas.
Tissues nearest to the antenna can absorb this
energy.

5. MAKE FRIENDS WITH LIPIDS AND
STEROIDS
Lipids and steroids are oils that nourish the
cell. These compounds are present in bread
but if they stay in it for more than a day, they
spoil. They are now being extracted because
they do not help to maximize profit. In their
place have come butter and sugar. This way
the bread lasts longer and profit is maximized.
Still, you need to find a way to consume 50%
of lipid and steroid. You can find it in ofada
and abakiliki rice. Local rice serves as a rich
source of lipid and steroid. The compounds
are capsulated in this form, making it easy to
take daily, and helping to heal the white blood
cells and protect the body system.

6. EAT LOTS OF FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
When a fruit leaves its tree, it starts to lose
25% of its nutrients daily; and in four days, the
nutrients in that fruit will all be gone. In as
much as one must consume lots of fruits and
vegetables, make sure these fruits and
vegetables are fresh!

7. TAKE A LOT OF ZINC AND SUPPLEMENTS
This is especially for the men. Take a lot of
food and fruits containing zinc. Water melon
seeds are a good source of zinc. Also the
back of watermelon contains fibre that controls
blood sugar. Take a lot of supplements like
calcium and supplemented drinks.

8. SCREEN YOURSELF REGULARLY
Do not be scared of going to the hospital to
check yourself. It is better to be safe than
sorry. Doing this reduces the risk of getting
cancer and even if cancerous cells are present,
they will be discovered early and something
can be done about it.
There are also so many do-it-yourself tests.
Either way, you will be taking care of yourself.
Your health is one thing that cannot be played
with.

Politics / World Bank Gives Kachikwu Thumbs Up On NNPC Reforms by simtosul: 5:37am On Apr 28, 2016
The World Bank wednesday said it was impressed
with the reforms initiated by the Minister of State
for Petroleum Resources and Group Managing
Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum
Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, at the state-
run oil company in order to reposition it into a
profit yielding entity.
The bank also commended Kachikwu for bringing
transparency and accountability to NNPC and
Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
A statement from the Group General Manager,
Public Affairs of NNPC, Mallam Garuba Deen
Muhammad, in Abuja contained this development.
According to the statement Managing Director of
the bank, Sir Mulyani Indrawati, said this when she
paid an official visit to Kachikwu in his office in
Abuja.
According to Indrawati, the ‘20 fixes’ introduced by
Kachikwu to the NNPC business models have gone
a long way to reform the corporation for
profitability.
She said the bank was ready and available to offer
the ministry of petroleum resources technical
support, advice and funding.
She stressed that adoption of sound policy thrusts
was key in the areas of fiscal direction, gas flare
out and gas to power for Nigeria.
The statement also quoted Kachikwu to have said
that since he assumed duty in August 2015, he had
introduced lots of reforms ranging from the first
phase of restructuring and the recent restructuring
which served as enablers for the introduction of new
business models that have drastically reduced the
losses recorded by the NNPC in the past.
“We first started with the softer issues which were
transparency issues, governance, restructuring and
that was going well when we went straight into the
business model.
“For example, when we came in, the NNPC was
recording huge losses and we have been able to
reverse that trend and if we continue with that sort
of trajectory then we should be able to record profit
in the near future,” said Kachikwu.
He added that a lot of institutional framework
restructuring are still ongoing in all the parastatals
under his watch.
According to him: “Infrastructure is the toughest
gap as a lot of depots and pipelines need urgent
attention and you need infrastructure, be it in the
upstream and downstream sector, for you to deliver
results but we will continue to throw solutions at
them and try to get private sector participation.”
He said: “The other tough gap is the funding. Just
sheer funding of the upstream joint venture cash
calls demands a lot of money and we are not
pretending about it. Again, the President has
travelled from point to point and a lot of people
have offered to support.”
Kachikwu urged the World Bank to offer support in
the area of institutional framework and training for
the ministry and NNPC, adding that the training
would provide the necessary skill sets that are
required to grow Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
NNPC through the “20-fixes” which are however
embedded in five cardinal business objectives that
it intends to pursue, plans to amongst other
initiatives, attain zero tolerance for corruption,
restructure its major subsidiaries as well as
enhance probity in its operations across board.
Also to be done within the initiative are, reduction
and audit of running costs; restructuring of
corporate centres and staff; renegotiation of existing
contracts including Production Sharing Contracts
(PSC); streamlining of subsidy management as well
as improve security of the country’s critical
petroleum pipelines.
The corporation will also restructure its refining
business; improve on its use of information
technology for its businesses and demand for
topnotch service performance from all its staff in
the ‘20 fixes’

Business / World Bank Raises 2016 Oil Price Forecast To $41 Per Barrel by simtosul: 6:31am On Apr 27, 2016
Fresh hope of a quicker recovery is on the horizon for cash-strapped Nigeria as the World Bank has raised its 2016 oil price forecast up from the previous level of $37 per barrel to a new height of $41.

The crude oil price at the international market according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data yesterday was between $43 and $44 per barrel.

Despite the country’s diversification efforts, crude oil remains the major income earner for the country with the sub-nationals heavily depending on revenue from oil sales at the monthly Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) to fund their activities now reeling in pains since last year when oil prices took a downward plunge as low as $25 per barrel. This followed global slow growth when Nigeria’s 2016 budget benchmark price estimate was fixed at $38 per barrel.

However, the World Bank yesterday said crude oil market rebounded to $40 per barrel in April following production disruptions in Iraq and Nigeria and a decline in non-Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) production, mainly U.S. shale.

A proposed production freeze by major producers failed to materialise at a meeting in mid-April.

The World Bank explained that the review of the forecast followed improving market sentiment and a weakening dollar, declaring that its new 2016 forecast for crude oil prices is now $41 per barrel from $37 per barrel, pointing out that Commodity Markets Outlook, as an oversupply in markets, is expected to recede.

“We expect slightly higher prices for energy commodities over the course of the year as markets rebalance after a period of oversupply,” said John Baffes, Senior Economist and lead author of the Commodities Markets Outlook.

“Still, energy prices could fall further if OPEC increases production significantly and non-OPEC production does not fall as fast as expected.”

All main commodity indexes tracked by the World Bank are expected to decline in 2016 from the year before due to persistently elevated supplies, and in the case of industrial commodities – which include energy, metals, and agricultural raw materials – weak growth prospects in emerging market and developing economies.

Energy prices, including oil, natural gas and coal, are due to fall 19.3 per cent in 2016 from the previous year, a more gradual drop than the 24.7 per cent slide forecast in January.

Non-energy commodities, such as metals and minerals, agriculture, and fertilizers, are due to decline 5.1 per cent this year, a downward revision from the 3.7 per cent drop forecast in January.

Crime / Viewer Discretion Photos: Female Student Was Battered By Soldiers by simtosul: 3:31pm On Apr 19, 2016
Students of Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu
Igbo, have cried out for help after their colleague
was brutally beaten up, battered and detained by
soldiers.
Aggrieved students of Abraham Adesanya
Polytechnic, Ijebu Igbo has cried foul of a fellow
colleague from the Department of Mass
Communication identified as Leshi Folashade who
was bartered by the school security (soldier) having
stood her ground that she will be writing her exams
since she has her cash payment with her as
damage payment mandated on all students.
According to a close colleague who claimed
anonymity, trouble started when the Cisco office in
the institution got burnt thereby affecting the
continuation of exams as students were mandated
to make a contribution of 5000 each via POS. Lesi
Folashade who could not make the payment as at
when due came in with her cash to the exam
premises but was denied entry into school premises
as the soldiers insisted that the payment was late.
Shade’s refusal to leave the school entrance gate
warranted the security men to rough-handle her;
denying over 100 final year students who could not
make payment the opportunity to write exams.
With several injuries inflicted on her, the soldiers
refused to let her go.
It was gathered that after informing the rector of the
institution of the situation on ground what had
happened, nothing came out of it.
Folasade was later driven to ‘Topan’ police station
by DSA (Miss Jokotagba) where she was detained
for no cause.
The aggrieved students equally noted that Prof.
Jumoke BIlesanmi Awoderu (rector) has done
nothing on the case and has denied Folashade
access to her lawyer. The students have insisted
that the government must come to the aid of their
colleague whose right was violated before more
