as the FIFA World Cup for Russia draws nearer, many Nigerians are drumming support for the Super Eagles both in Nigeria and Russia.

Supporters have been purchasing jerseys en masse to show support for the national football team.

Mallam Shehu Dikko who is the 2nd Vice President and Chairman of NFF Marketing, Sponsorship and TV Rights Committee said; “the new Super Eagles’ jersey will soon be in the markets all over the world including some Nike shops in different parts of Nigeria on the 29th of May, 2018.”

But the production of the jerseys has taken a phoney twist as some individuals have circulated replicas around the market before the official release date by Nike.

The traders interviewed by the BBC Pidgin have bragged that sales of the fake jerseys have been explosive.

“I pray Nigeria reaches the finals. Once we make it to the finals of the world cup, I will import a container-load of jerseys for big sales” Obiora, a local trader from the South-eastern part of Nigeria said.

“I have been selling the Nigerian jerseys even before they were unveiled on the internet. All my customers have been going crazy about the jerseys. I have successfully sold more than 3,000 pieces so far” he added.

A BBC correspondent also spoke with other traders in the business of selling fake jerseys which the Nigeria Football Federation hasn’t endorsed. One of the traders proudly rocking the replica jersey said his is original as he imported them from Thailand. The traders also help customers in cresting their names on the jerseys for a feee.

Another trader who called the replica jersey a ‘top grade’ said the price ranges from N7,000 to N10,000 per unit.

It would be recalled that there were earlier reports that most of the new Super Eagles jerseys in circulation are fake. Further checks revealed that Nigerians are indifferent about purchasing immitations. They believe the original one which costs $85 (N30,600) is too expensive for them.

One Twitter user identified as Iya Oni Jersey is also in the notorious business of selling fake Super Eagles jerseys for N15,000 per unit on the micro-blogging platform

This act of Intellectual Property Theft and Copyright Abuse is criminal but it appears the society is comfortable with it. It remains unclear if the leadership of the NFF will take judicial actions against the traders of replica Super Eagles Jerseys.

Clash of the Titans: Adidas and Nike continue to battle it out

Nike is not used to playing catchup, but Adidas is beating it in technology, innovation and style.

Adidas (ADDDF) brand sales in North America were up 25% in 2017, compared with 3% for Nike (NKE).
Adidas is still much smaller than Nike: Adidas brought in $5.3 billion in 2017 compared with Nike's $15.2 billion. But Adidas has a better sense for what consumers want to buy, which is making Nike sweat.

"Demand for technical, performance shoes began to subside, and consumers started caring more about fashion," said Christopher Svezia, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. "Adidas was very aggressive. They took off the reins and really went at it."

Adidas landed hits with classic revivals of its Stan Smith and Gazelle shoes, said Edward Jones analyst Brian Yarbrough. Many of the designs caught on with celebrities and became a staple on fashion-forward Instagram accounts.

"Having the Kardashians wear your shoes helps," Svezia said.

But Nike still courts some of the biggest names in sports. It has pricey, lifetime deals with Cristiano Ronaldo, LeBron James and Michael Jordan, whose Air Jordan brand is a boon for the company. Nike also has a sponsorship deal with Serena Williams, and recently released its first line of female Air Jordans.

Nike is also the official uniform provider of the NBA this season -- a deal it snatched from Adidas. Nike also recently locked in a long-standing partnership with the NFL with a deal that runs through 2028.

Nike depends on big names for marketing, and still features the biggest names. But Adidas has encroached on that territory.
In 2015 it lured NBA superstar James Harden away from Nike.

Last week it announced a 10-year deal with the University of Washington, taking over from Nike as the official sponsor. And to compete for female customers they partnered with fashion designer Stella McCartney and supermodel Karlie Kloss.

Although Nike is still the king of endorsements, Yarbrough said Adidas "lapped" Nike's product innovation.
For example, in April 2017, Adidas debuted a shoe with a 3D-printed sole that allows for more customization. The "Futurecraft 4D" is printed through a process called digital light synthesis, which uses UV lasers to create a shoe that's durable and flexible. Most 3D-printed materials are hard and stiff.

Svezia said Adidas' growth has slowed recently but it's gaining more of the market.

Adidas may have the momentum, but Svezia thinks Nike will start growing more in North America during its next fiscal year, which starts in June.

"After 18 to 24 months of pain in the North American market, Nike is starting to launch a product that's resonating more with consumers," he said. "Nike is declining a lot less. It's flattening out."

Yarbrough said part of Nike's strategy to regain its former popularity has been to get closer to consumers.
Nike has made it clear that it wants to increase its interactions with consumers and speed up how quickly it can get product to customers. It's also taken more steps recently to improve the shopping experience for customers in stores and online.

In March, Nike acquired a technology company that predicts consumer behavior. Last week it bought a company that uses artificial intelligence and 3D modeling to help customers shop.

It also has plans to expand its operations in 12 major cities, including New York, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Paris and Mexico City. Nike said those 12 cities will account for over 80% of its growth until 2020.

A previous version incorrectly said Serena Williams signed on to endorse the Jordan brand.

What's the Big Idea?

If asked to imagine what prehistoric human sex was like, according to psychologist Christopher Ryan, most of us would conjure "the hackneyed image of the caveman, dragging a dazed woman by her hair with one hand, a club in the other..." Ryan says this image is mistaken in every detail. A much more likely picture of how it went down in prehistoric times was this: a caveman would quietly sit in the corner and watch another caveman have sex with a woman, patiently waiting his turn.


Apparently, prehistoric women were extraordinarily promiscuous, and like our primate ancestors, women are hard-wired to behave like chimps in the bedroom. In his book, Sex at Dawn: The Prehistoric Origin of Modern Sexuality , Ryan offers a biological explanation for why we find monogamy so difficult today. A male is interested in sex with one woman up until the point of orgasm, at which point he will immediately lose interest, fall asleep, or perhaps wonder off to find more action.


In other words, human males are in important ways sexually incompatible with human females, who are capable of multiple orgasms. So what is the evolutionary advantage of this? Take monogamy out of the equation, and the evolutionary logic becomes more evident. A woman can have multiple sexual partners. This may increase her chances of reproducing, and she needs to try it a lot to be successful. Compared to other animals, humans have an incredibly low rate of conception, based on the number of sexual acts we partake in. And so it is well that sex is so much fun for humans, because if that were not the case, we wouldn't have made it this far.
So just what does it mean to make love like a caveman? It means have a lot of sex, partaking in, as Ryan describes it, the "seven million years of primate promiscuity" that our ancestors so heartily embraced as a species. That's a lot of sex.



What's the Significance?

According to Ryan, if we took an honest look at our dysfunctional sexual lives today, this is what we would find: we are all victims of a well-intentioned inquisition. American society has responded to this crisis by inventing a 'marital-industrial complex' of couples therapy, "pharmaceutical hard-ons," sex advice columnists, and "creepy father-daughter purity cults.” Viagra breaks sales records every year. Pornography worldwide is a $100 billion business. Ryan says we spend all of this money to compensate for a fundamental disconnect we have with our nature.


For instance, why is monogamy so difficult? According to Ryan, we are biologically programmed against it. It was not until the advent of agriculture that man developed a notion of private property, and had reason to feel jealous of a promiscuous mate. Culture invented monogamy, and with it marriage, cheating, and a sense of shame that surrounds our sexual selves. Ryan is anything but a home-wrecker. His book offers no prescriptions for curing our disconnect with nature. What he does recommend, however, is that we lose this sense of shame we have when we feel or act certain ways that contradict our culture, but which are in perfect harmony with our sexual nature.
