PoliticsCourt Sentences Police Officer In Plateau To Death By Hanging For Murder Of Univ by SJMag1(op): 12:09pm On Dec 10, 2025
A Plateau state high court sitting in Jos has sentenced a police officer, Sgt. Ruya Auta to death by hanging for the murder of a University of Jos (UNIJOS) student identified as Rinji Bala.

The chief judge of Plateau state, David Mann, delivering the judgement on Tuesday, ordered that Auta be executed by hanging or lethal injection after finding him guilty of culpable homicide in the death of Bala.

The fatal shooting occurred on May 12, 2020, during the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown when Bala, then a 300-level student at UNIJOS, and two friends were strolling near the Hwolshe area of Jos when they were stopped, searched, and taken into custody by security operatives.

Though no incriminating item was found on them, the students were detained, beaten, and later released only to be told to run.

As they ran, Auta fired his service weapon, and the bullet struck Bala in the back, leading to his death.

Prosecutors presented evidence, including eyewitness testimony and forensic review, demonstrating that Auta had unlawfully used his service weapon.

The court concluded that the circumstances did not support a claim of accidental discharge but showed intent, especially given that the fatal shot struck the victim in the back.

In remarks after the ruling, prosecuting counsel, Garba Pwul (SAN), said the verdict was anticipated, noting the convict had admitted involvement, though he claimed the shooting was unintentional.

“The prosecution was actually able to show that the convict had the intent of shooting the victim, as he was shot on the back,” Pwul said.

He added that while Auta has the constitutional right to appeal, the prosecution had not yet received any notice of such intent.

The late student’s father, Peter Bala, reacted to the judgment, saying that while no one celebrates the death of another person, the law is the law.

He expressed hope that the verdict would deter negligent or reckless behaviour by security personnel in the future.

PoliticsSenate Query Utilization Of N6.2bn Funds Allocated To Nigerian Police Force by SJMag1(op): 10:41am On Dec 10, 2025
The senate has queried the utilization of funds released to agencies implementing the Safe Schools Initiative (SSI), particularly the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), which received the largest single allocation of ₦6.225 billion from the ₦15 billion disbursed in 2023.

The concerns were disclosed on Tuesday, December 9, by senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC, Abia north), chairman of the senate ad-hoc committee investigating the implementation of the programme, following the committee’s grilling of the national coordinator, financing safe schools in Nigeria, Hajia Halima Iliya.

The committee queried reports of financial irregularities and questionable consultancy spending in the multi-agency security programme designed to protect schools from terrorist attacks and mass abductions.

Kalu ordered a full reconciliation of all financial records and directed the safe schools financing office to return with a comprehensive and rectified breakdown of all funds released, expenditures made, names and details of contractors, and complete documentation from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) trust fund account.

He stressed that the committee would not proceed without clear and verifiable records.

Speaking before the committee, Hajia Iliya traced the origins of the SSI to the 2014 abduction of 276 Chibok schoolgirls, which led to the launch of the programme under former president Goodluck Jonathan in collaboration with international partners.

She listed major contributions to the CBN-domiciled trust fund as follows: federal government, $10 million (₦1.5 billion); Nigerian business leaders, $10 million (₦2 billion); African Development Bank, $1 million (about ₦200 million); German government, €2 million (about ₦1 billion); Norwegian government, $4 million (managed by UNICEF); UN multi-donor trust fund with contributions from UNICEF, UNDP and UNOPS; and a combined $4 million from USAID and the Qatar Foundation.

On the 2023 federal release of ₦15 billion, Iliya confirmed the allocations: NPF, ₦6.225 billion; Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), ₦3.362 billion; defense headquarters, ₦2.250 billion; federal ministry of education, ₦519 million; while the exact amount for the Department of State Services (DSS) was not publicly disclosed during the session.

She also revealed that the safe schools financing office had no budgetary allocation in 2024 and 2025, explaining that its request for inclusion in the 2024 fiscal year was submitted too late to reach the President.

Tension emerged during the hearing when senator Oluranti Idiat (APC, Lagos central) queried why nearly half of ₦4.44 billion previously referenced in documents appeared to have been spent on consultancy and operational costs, almost equaling the amount spent on core projects.

“You have used almost half of ₦4.44 billion for consultancy and operational expenses and spent about ₦4 billion on the project itself. Don’t you think that is why you are not getting another budget?” Idiat asked.

In response, Iliya said the documents being referred to related to 2014 and not the 2023 funding cycle, adding that the Safe Schools programme funding in question was released in 2023.

Idiat replied: “You’re not doing us a favor. Please withdraw that statement.”

Also contributing, senator Musa Maidoki (APC, Kebbi south) questioned the policy rationale of separate allocations to security agencies, arguing that Safe Schools funding should be tied strictly to performance and domiciled closer to communities.

Similarly, senator Kenneth Eze (APC, Ebonyi central) raised fears of possible misappropriation, stating that the financial submissions lacked clarity and authenticity, and that consultancy expenses raised serious red flags.

The senate committee vowed to continue its probe and insisted that no further steps would be taken until complete, transparent and verifiable records are presented.

Politics‘democracy Under Severe Attack,’ PDP Reacts To Fubara’s Defection To APC by SJMag1(op): 8:32am On Dec 10, 2025
The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday warned that democracy in Nigeria is under severe attack, following the defection of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, from the party to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

“We reiterate to Nigerians and the global community that with the unrelenting disposition of the ruling party towards the attainment of a one-party state, and the constriction of the political space, democracy is under severe attack in Nigeria,” the PDP said.

In a statement signed by party spokesman Ini Ememobong, the PDP called on Nigerians to rise and oppose what it called ignoble trip toward electoral authoritarianism.

The party expressed pity over Fubara’s decision, describing it as an example of the old legal maxim: “to one who is willing, no harm can be done.”

“Everyone who has followed the developments that culminated in this uneventful defection will recall that the Governor willingly travelled the path that took him to this destination,” the statement read.

“Having done so voluntarily, he cannot turn around and accuse our party, or any other person or group of abandoning or not protecting him. Whilst a person who is at a crossroads of threats of existential proportion, will most likely suffer from temporary amnesia caused by trauma, the Governor should have nothing less than praise for our party, civil society organisations, and all Nigerians who freely stood up in his defence since this crisis started until he capitulated.

“It is our prayer that the Governor should not suffer from Stockholm Syndrome, where a victim falls in love with his captor. In all, despite these, we pity the Governor and wish him well.”

The PDP also highlighted that the situation in Rivers State underscores the dysfunction of Nigeria’s democracy, where it said individuals are bigger and stronger than institutions and can use the apparatus of the Federal Government to obfuscate political life out of their opponents and bring them to their knees.

“Democracy is terribly threatened by acts of this kind, and all well-meaning people should unify in condemning this progressive decline of democratic norms,” the statement added.

“Finally, we reiterate to Nigerians and the global community that with the unrelenting disposition of the ruling party towards the attainment of a one-party state, and the constriction of the political space, democracy is under severe attack in Nigeria. Everyone must rise together to oppose this ignoble trip toward electoral authoritarianism.”

PoliticsNSCDC Officer Sentenced To Combined 7 Years Imprisonment For Certificate Forgery by SJMag1(op): 4:11pm On Dec 08, 2025
The federal high court sitting in Gudu, Abuja, has sentenced an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Hassan Abdullahi, to a combined seven years imprisonment for certificate forgery and salary fraud.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) brought Abdullahi before Justice E. Okpe on Friday, who found him guilty on a two-count charge filed by the commission.

According to evidence presented in court, the superintendent had submitted a forged Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) purportedly issued by Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu, Kebbi state, to the NSCDC in December 2010 to advance his career.

Prosecuting counsel, Hamza Sani, told the court that the document was confirmed to be fake during investigations.

For the forgery offence, which contravenes section 366 and is punishable under section 364 of the penal code, the judge sentenced Abdullahi to two years in prison or a ₦2 million fine.

The court also ruled that Abdullahi corruptly benefited from the forged certificate by collecting salaries and allowances applicable to the rank of senior inspector between December 2011 and October 2022.

He was convicted under section 19 of the ICPC act, 2000, and handed a five-year jail term without an option of fine.

Invoking section 321 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, Justice Okpe further directed him to refund all salaries, emoluments, and benefits earned through the fraudulent promotion.

The ICPC in a statement on Monday, described the judgement as a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s support to curb corruption in the public service, urging public institutions to strengthen their internal verification systems to prevent similar abuses.

PoliticsGovernor Fintiri Imposes 24-hour Curfew After Fresh Communal Clash In Adamawa LG by SJMag1(op): 3:28pm On Dec 08, 2025
The governor of Adamawa state, Ahmadu Fintiri, has imposed a 24-hour curfew following a fresh communal clash in Lamurde local government area.

In a statement signed by the press secretary to the deputy governor, Hussaini Hammangabdo, on Monday, December 8, the governor instructed security agencies to swiftly deploy to affected areas to restore peace and maintain order.

According to the statement, Fintiri directed security agencies to move to the areas threatened by the renewed communal clash to promptly restore peace and order.

“The Adamawa state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Lamurde local government area with immediate effect following a renewed communal clash that broke out on Sunday evening,” the statement read.

The government is urging residents of Lamurde to remain calm and cooperate fully with security operatives as efforts are underway to prevent further escalation.

PoliticsLagos–calabar Highway Project: FG Pay N1bn Compensation To Residents Affected By by SJMag1(op): 2:25pm On Dec 08, 2025
The federal government has paid N1bn in compensation to residents of Cross River state whose properties were affected by the ongoing construction of the Lagos–Calabar coastal highway.

The disclosure was made by the federal controller of works in Cross River state, Yinka Onafuye, during an inspection of the Calabar–Itu road and sections 3A and 3B of the 750-kilometre highway by the minister of works, David Umahi, on Sunday, December 7.

“Payment of compensation is ongoing. Farmlands and buildings affected by the project have been valued, and beneficiaries have started receiving payments through the banks.

“Between 700 and 1,000 people from 12 communities in Akamkpa and Odukpani local government areas have benefited so far. The federal government has paid compensation amounting to N1bn to affected persons,” he added.

Umahi highlighted features of the highway, including relief stations, solar-powered lighting, and CCTV cameras, designed to enhance safety and ensure rapid emergency response.

“The highway will include essential facilities at strategic points to improve travel safety and support security agencies,” he said.

The minister, speaking in Awi, Akamkpa local government area, also noted president Bola Tinubu’s commitment to completing the highway, a vision he began nurturing over 27 years ago as Lagos state governor.

The managing director of HITECH Africa construction company, Dany Aboud, assured that the company would deploy additional manpower and resources to ensure timely completion of both sections within the 36-month contract period.

The chairman of the senate committee on works, senator Mpigi Barinada, said the scale and cost of the project are justified given the quality of construction and extensive earthworks required due to the swampy terrain.

Dr Alex Egbona, representing Abi/Yakurr federal constituency, added that many residents are impressed by the progress of the project.

He assured president Tinubu of maximum support in 2027, noting that the highway is expected to stimulate massive development across the state.

PoliticsKebbi Govt Approve N10bn Loan To Secure 1,300 Additional Hajj Seats For Intendin by SJMag1(op): 2:00pm On Dec 08, 2025
The Kebbi state government has approved a N10 billion loan to secure an additional 1,300 Hajj seats for intending pilgrims from the state for the 2026 pilgrimage.

The chairman of the state pilgrims welfare agency, Alhaji Faruku Aliyu-Yaro, disclosed this on Saturday, December 6, in Birnin Kebbi.

He explained that the intervention was necessary to meet the December 5 deadline earlier fixed by the national Hajj commission of Nigeria.

Aliyu-Yaro praised governor Nasir Idris for what he described as a timely and people-focused decision, noting that many prospective pilgrims were already distressed over fears of losing their slots.

According to him, the loan not only protected the state’s full allocation but also created opportunities for more residents to participate.

He also announced that the payment deadline for intending pilgrims has now been extended to Tuesday, December 16.

With the extension, pilgrims can now complete payment of the N7,696,769.79 Hajj fare without pressure.

He added that all 21 local government areas in the state would benefit equally from the new arrangement.

Aliyu-Yaro further revealed that preparations for the 2026 Hajj had already been underway for several months, stressing that Kebbi remains one of the leading states in early planning and coordination for the pilgrimage.

PoliticsWike-backed PDP Faction Dissolves National Working Committee, Sets Up Caretaker by SJMag1(op): 12:06pm On Dec 08, 2025
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT0 Nyesom Wike, has dissolved the national working committee (NWC) and set up a caretaker panel.

The caretaker panel was inaugurated on Sunday, December 7, during a meeting of the national executive committee (NEC) held at Wike’s Life Camp residence in Abuj

The 13-member committee is expected to run the party’s affairs for 60 days, pending the conduct of a national convention.

Abdulrahman Mohammed chairs the committee, with Samuel Anyanwu as secretary.

Other members are Kamaldeen Ajibade (national legal adviser), Umar Bature (national organising secretary), Kyari Grema, Janguda Mohammed, Okechukwu Osuana, Nwogu Olaka, Sandy Onor, Adenike Ogunse, Bisi Kolawole, Deji Doherty, and Ibrahim Aboki.

The tenure of the PDP NWC elected in October 2021 will elapse on Tuesday, December 9.

Last month, a faction of the party backed by the PDP governors, including Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi state; and Seyi Makinde of Oyo state; held a convention and elected new NWC members, with Kabiru Turaki as chairman.

During the convention, the PDP expelled Wike and his allies, Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Oyo; Anyanwu, Bature, Ajibade, Mao Ohuabunwa, former lawmaker; Austin Nwachukwu, former Imo state PDP chairman; Amah Nnanna Abraham, former Abia state PDP chairman; Dan Orbih, former national vice-chairman (south-south); and Turnah George.

The Wike group rejected the expulsion and has formed a parallel NWC, board of trustees (BoT), and NEC.

In a tit-for-tat, the Wike faction also expelled members of the Makinde faction.

PoliticsOshiomhole Call For Stricter Fintech Oversight After Hackers Accessed His Accoun by SJMag1(op): 4:48pm On Dec 05, 2025
Senator Adams Oshiomhole, representing Edo north, has called for stricter oversight of fintech companies after hackers accessed his account through Opay and Moniepoint.

Oshiomhole made the remarks on Thursday, December 4, while contributing to the plenary debate on a bill seeking to amend the banks and other financial institutions act to provide for the designation, registration, and enhanced supervision of systemically important financial institutions.

The senator urged the national assembly not only to support the legislation but also to scrutinize it closely to ensure all potential loopholes are addressed.

Drawing from his personal experience with cyber fraud, he highlighted how non-traditional financial platforms are increasingly used for illicit transactions.

“When they hacked into my account, I found that all the institutions used were Opay and Moniepoint; none of the registered banks were involved,” Oshiomhole said.

“And when I inquired, I was told they don’t have a branch in Abuja, they don’t employ labor, and they bear no social responsibility.”

Oshiomhole emphasized that the provisions of the bill will help ensure technology-driven financial institutions meet basic regulatory and operational standards.

“For instance, I know all the directors of First Bank, Access Bank, and Zenith Bank. But I don’t know the directors of Opay or Moniepoint. These are visible players in our economy, and when they fail, the political authority will be left to bear the burden of protecting duped Nigerians,” he added.

He stressed that the government has a duty to protect citizens in every ramification, noting that laws enacted by the national assembly carry enforceable weight, unlike regulations issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“So, I think we should support it,” he said.

“And I would encourage a detailed line inquiry to ensure all loopholes are captured, including identifying the owners of these institutions.”

At the end of the debate, the bill, sponsored by senator Tokunbo Abiru of Lagos east, passed the second reading.

PoliticsRivers Assembly Speaker Amaewhule, 15 Lawmakers Defect From PDP To APC by SJMag1(op): 12:35pm On Dec 05, 2025
The speaker of the Rivers state house of assembly, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, along with 15 lawmakers, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection, announced during plenary on Friday, December 5, represents a major political realignment in the state legislature and could significantly shift the balance of power between factions loyal to governor and those aligned with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister Nyesom Wike.

Speaking on the house floor, speaker Amaewhule stated that the lawmakers had unanimously resolved to join the APC, citing a clear and irreconcilable division within the PDP as the reason for their decision.

“We can no longer remain in a party that has been deeply divided and no longer represents the ideals we stood for,” Amaewhule said.

“In line with section 109 (1)(g) of the 1999 constitution (as amended), we have chosen to align with the All Progressives Congress (APC), which offers a united and progressive platform.”

The defection follows weeks of speculation amid growing rifts between factions in the state’s political landscape.

It also strengthens the position of lawmakers loyal to Wike, who have been at odds with governor Fubara since late 2023.

With this move, the APC is poised to gain a stronger foothold in the Rivers state assembly, which had been largely dominated by the PDP.

PoliticsIgbo Community Are Greatest Stakeholders In Nigerian Project – Shettima Reaffirm by SJMag1(op): 9:37am On Dec 05, 2025
Vice president, Kashim Shettima, has reaffirmed the significant influence of the Igbo community in shaping the country’s development, describing them as “the greatest stakeholders in the Nigerian project.”

Shettima, on Thursday, December 4, speaking on behalf of president Bola Tinubu, addressed the Imo economic stakeholders summit held in Owerri.

He praised the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of Ndigbo, noting that their economic footprint can be seen nationwide.

“Abuja is owned by the Igbo,” Shettima said.

“Half of the population of Lagos is likely made up of the Igbo. There is hardly any place in this country where you won’t find an Igbo manufacturer if you don’t see one, run away from that place. If you don’t see a Hausa person, run away from that place.”

He added that in almost every part of Nigeria, the Igbo can be found driving manufacturing and commerce.

In the same breath, he remarked that both the Igbo and Hausa communities naturally gravitate toward places where opportunities are abundant.

Shettima urged leaders across the country to invest not only in Igboland but in every region, stressing that Nigeria is on the verge of unprecedented transformation.

Citing a former president of Mauritius, he reminded listeners that “one out of every four black men is a Nigerian,” highlighting the country’s global significance.

He projected that by 2050, Nigeria will become the world’s third most populous nation with an estimated 440 million people, surpassing the United States (U.S).

Looking further ahead, he noted that by the end of the century, Nigeria is expected to emerge as the most populated country in the world.

Reaffirming his optimism about the country’s future, Shettima concluded with pride: “I am proud to call myself a Nigerian.”

PoliticsTinubu Swears In Former CDS General Christopher Musa As New Defense Minister by SJMag1(op): 5:02pm On Dec 04, 2025
President Bola Tinubu has swore in former chief of defense staff, General Christopher Musa, as the new minister of defense.

The brief swearing-in ceremony held on Thursday, December 4, at the presidential villa saw Musa take the oath of office barely 24 hours after the senate screened and confirmed his nomination.

Tinubu had forwarded Musa’s name to the senate earlier in the week following the resignation of Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down as defence minister on health grounds.

Musa’s appointment comes at a time of heightened security concerns nationwide, with the administration banking on his military experience to strengthen ongoing counter-terrorism and internal security operations.

The president’s request was conveyed in a letter read by the senate president, Godswill Akpabio, during Thursday’s, December 4, plenary.

The nominees include career and non-career ambassadors and high commissioners.

This development comes a week after Tinubu transmitted the names of three nominees for non-career ambassadorial appointments.

In his latest letter, Tinubu said 34 persons were nominated as career ambassadors and high commissioners, while 31 others were nominated as non-career ambassadors and high commissioners.

Some of the prominent nominees are Mahmood Yakubu, the immediate-past chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); ex-presidential aide Reno Omokri, ex-governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state, former deputy governor of Lagos state, Femi Pedro; Ondo north senator, Jimoh Ibrahim; Florence, the wife of the late governor of Oyo state, Abiola Ajimobi, and former Ekiti state first lady, Angela Adebayo.

Notable nominees among the career ambassadorial nominees are Sulu-Gambari Ahmed (Kwara state) and Segun Ige (Edo), while the non-career ambassadorial nominees include a former senator from Adamawa state, Grace Bent, and a former senator from Akwa-Ibom, Ita Enang.

After reading the letter, the senate president referred the request to the senate committee on foreign affairs and directed the committee to report back within one week.

PoliticsFEC Approves $100m Afdb Loan To Support Nigeria Youth Investment Fund by SJMag1(op): 3:35pm On Dec 04, 2025
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a $100 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to support the Nigeria youth investment fund.

Finance minister and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun, said the fund will target young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 35, with a focus on small and medium-sized businesses.

Edun made the announcement on Wednesday, December 3, following FEC meeting chaired by president Bola Tinubu.

“Moreover, the council endorsed $50 million funding from the Islamic Development Bank for an integrated agricultural development project in Yobe state aimed at improving food security and rural livelihoods,” Edun said.

The minister noted that Tinubu commended his cabinet’s commitment to the renewed hope agenda and pointed to new economic indicators showing continued resilience, with GDP expanding by 3.89 percent in the third quarter of 2025.

He said inflation had started to decline, while the agriculture and industrial sectors recorded strong performance.

But despite the progress, minister said the president observed that the current growth rate remains below his 7 percent annual target, which he considers essential for lifting millions of Nigerians out of poverty.

Tinubu was said to have directed ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to prioritize capital expenditure on growth-enhancing and job-creating projects, noting that the economic management team will streamline these priorities for his final approval.

PoliticsPDP Issue Expulsion Certificates To Wike, Fayose, 9 Others by SJMag1(op): 10:52am On Dec 03, 2025
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued certificates of expulsion to the minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyelsom Wike; former Ekiti state governor Ayodele Fayose; immediate past national secretary of the party senator Samuel Anyanwu and eight other members.

They were expelled during the national convention of the party in Ibadan on November 15.

The party’s national chairman, Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, broke the news on Tuesday, December 2, after officially taking over the affairs of the party from the Umar Damagun led leadership.

Turaki said the party decided to issue the certificates to make it easier for the expelled members to register with other political parties since the laws in Nigeria does not allow anybody to belong to two political parties at a time.

“We have considered the issue of members of our party who were expelled by the national convention in Ibadan. We have taken note of the fact that Nigerian law frowns ay dual membership of political parties, and so we have sought to make it easy for them,” Turaki said.

“Now that they are no longer members of our party, and now that the national convention, which is the highest decision-making organ of our party, has expelled them, we have decided to issue them certificates of expulsion so that, when they go to register with other political parties in Nigeria, they will show these certificates as proof that they are no longer members of the PDP, and those parties will not accuse them of trying to belong to more than one political party.

“As I speak to you, these certificates have been dispatched via courier to the 11 persons who have been expelled,” he added.

PoliticsGovernor Adeleke Resigns From PDP Over Persistent National Leadership Crisis by SJMag1(op): 9:38am On Dec 02, 2025
Governor of Osun state, Ademola Adeleke, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over persistent leadership crisis at the party’s national level.

In a statement shared on his Instagram page on Monday night, December 1, Adeleke confirmed that he submitted his resignation to party officials in Sagba Abogunde, ward 2, Ede north local government, on November 4.

“Due to the ongoing crisis within the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (#OfficialPDPNig) at the national level, I officially conveyed my resignation letter as a member to the party leadership in Sagba Abogunde, ward 2, Ede north local government on November 4,” Adeleke said.

“I thank the party and its many members and supporters for the opportunities they have provided me, first as a senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, and now as governor of Osun state.”

Earlier reports from the PDP state chapter indicated that Adeleke was unlikely to seek the party’s nomination for the 2026 governorship election unless the internal conflicts were resolved.

The leadership had expressed hope that a resolution, recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), could persuade him otherwise.

It was reported that the PDP leadership in Osun state suggested governor Adeleke might no longer be interested in seeking the party’s nomination for the 2026 governorship election.

However, the party stated that Adeleke’s decision could change if the crises affecting the party are resolved and recognized by INEC within the commission’s timeline for the Osun governorship poll.

PoliticsNorthern Govs Urge Tinubu To Suspend Mining Activities For 6 Months Over Insecur by SJMag1(op): 8:12am On Dec 02, 2025
The Northern States Governors’ Forum, NSGF, has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend all mining exploration for six months to enable a thorough audit.

The governors warned that illegal mining has become a major driver of insecurity across the northern region.

This position was announced in Kaduna by the forum’s chairman and Gombe State governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, after a joint session of the NSGF and the Northern Traditional Rulers Council.

The communiqué also revealed the establishment of a regional Security Trust Fund, which will receive monthly contributions of N1 billion from each state and their local governments, with deductions made at source under an agreed framework.

Parts of the communiqué read, “The Forum observed that illegal mining has become a major contributory factor to the security crises in Northern Nigeria, the Forum therefore resolved to strongly recommend to the President to direct the Hon. Minister of Solid Minerals to suspend mining exploration for a period of 6 (six months to allow proper audit. Subject all mining Licences to revalidation for a period of six months in active consultation with the various State Governors and in the process arrest the menace of artisanal illegal mining.”

It added, “In order to effectively confront the security crises in the North, the Forum resolved to set-up a regional Security Trust Fund to be funded with monthly contribution of One Billion Naira from each state and local governments to be deducted at source under a framework to be agreed upon.”

The governors commended traditional rulers for their role in maintaining unity and stability and extended condolences to states affected by recent killings, abductions and insurgent attacks. The communiqué further stated, “Consequently, the Forum resolved to renew its support for every step to be taken by the President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria in taking the fight against insurgents to their enclave.”

It reaffirmed full support for state police and encouraged lawmakers to fast-track its realization.

PoliticsAmaechi Reject Atiku’s VP Slot, Insist He’s Contesting For President In 2027 Ele by SJMag1(op): 2:20pm On Dec 01, 2025
Former minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has rejected claims linking him to a potential vice-presidential slot alongside former Vice president Atiku Abubakar, insisting that his focus is on contesting for the presidency in the 2027 elections.

He said he is solely pursuing his own presidential ambition and will not serve as a running mate to anyone.

Amaechi’s clarification comes after comments Atiku’s ally, Dele Momodu, on Sunday, November 30, suggesting that Atiku might consider the former Rivers state governor as a potential running mate if Peter Obi declines to join him.

“A lot of people are underrating Amaechi. Amaechi single-handedly handed power to former president Muhammadu Buhari. What the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, Nyesom Wike, is doing now, though in an unruly manner, Amaechi did quite well when he was governor of Rivers State,” Momodu said.

“Amaechi mobilized more than any other person for Buhari, even more than Tinubu. If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, then I believe the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”

However, Amaechi, responding through his media aide, David Iyofor, ruled out any interest in becoming a running mate, insisting that he is focused solely on contesting for the presidency.

“‎Amaechi is not seeking to be a running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not,” Iyofor stated.

He stressed that there have been no discussions regarding Amaechi taking up a vice-presidential slot.

“Amaechi is not aware of, and will not be part of any talk to be running mate to anybody. For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody.

“Politicians are kindly advised to leave Amaechi’s name out of any discussion for presidential running mate,” he added.

PoliticsFG unveils ECOWAS Biometric Identity Card, Highlights Security Gains by SJMag1(op): 4:39pm On Nov 28, 2025
The Federal Government of Nigeria on Friday inaugurated the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC) for regional integration, enhanced security, and efficient identity management across West Africa.

Speaking at the official launch of the ENBIC in Abuja, themed “ENBIC: Enhancing Regional Integration and Security”, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, said it represented the fulfilment of President Bola Tinubu’s vision.

The minister said the achievement was the result of the president’s commitment and the dedication of officers of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

Tunji-Ojo said the event was about the realisation of President Tinubu’s mandate and the resilience of NIS officers, adding that the rollout, which began 11 years ago, had now been actualised under the present administration.

He described the President as the “Grand Innovator of the Federal Republic (GIFR)”, whose leadership he said ensured the completion of the project.

He said although Nigeria was the seventh ECOWAS country to deploy the card, its eventual rollout signified a major step toward strengthening regional security and migration management.

“The card provides the foundation for more efficient identification across borders, a crucial component in combating insecurity,” he said.

The minister explained that the biometric card would support regular migration within ECOWAS and reduce irregular movements, adding that better migration management enhances economic opportunities and security.

He said the next step was integrating the card into the Public Key Directory of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to enable seamless verification at all entry points.

Tunji-Ojo said the Tinubu administration believed in delivering concrete results rather than promises, noting that the President inherited significant economic and structural challenges but had taken bold steps to address them.

He cited the removal of forex and fuel subsidies, which saved the country $25 billion annually, describing the decision as courageous and necessary for national economic stability.

He said security reforms under the administration were structural and not ad hoc, emphasising that no nation could secure its borders without proper identity management.

“The ENBIC will support intelligence gathering and provide security agencies with reliable data needed to protect citizens,” he said.

The minister also highlighted the deployment of the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS), which he said Nigeria implemented in 2024 for the first time since the United Nations Security Council mandated it in 2017.

He said the system now ensures that no traveller enters the country without prior notification to security agencies.

Tunji-Ojo stated that the biometric card would reduce pressure on the passport system, noting that Nigerians who travel only within ECOWAS would no longer need international passports.

He said the initiative would benefit traders and small business owners who frequently move across borders within the subregion.

He announced that the Federal Government was exploring the possibility of developing a regional migration database in collaboration with ECOWAS member states, similar to the Schengen system, to strengthen cross-border security and identity management.

He said the subregion had the capacity and expertise to achieve the feat if there was collective will.

The minister emphasised that the ENBIC was an economic and security tool and urged Nigerians to embrace it as part of broader reforms in the nation’s identity and border management system.

Tunji-Ojo also disclosed that the next major reform, the Single Travel Emergency Passport (STEP), would be launched in January.

He said the STEP would enable Nigerians abroad who lose their passports to generate an emergency travel document using any mobile device without visiting an embassy.

He urged Nigerians to trust the government’s capacity to address national challenges and called for collective support for ongoing security reforms.

He praised the dedication of security personnel, saying they were working tirelessly to develop lasting structural solutions.

The minister said nation-building required the contribution of every citizen, adding that Nigeria would become greater if all stakeholders played their part.

In her welcome address, the NIS CG, Kemi Nandap, described the ENBIC as a landmark initiative that underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening regional cooperation.

Nandap commended President Bola Tinubu for his visionary leadership and the Minister of Interior for their guidance and unwavering support in delivering the project.

She said the ENBIC, aligned with ECOWAS Heads of State decision A/DEC.01/12/14 and the A/P 1/5/79 Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, replaces the outdated manual travel document and represents years of meticulous planning and collaboration by NIS and regional stakeholders.

“The new travel document features a secure biometric system aimed at facilitating legal movement and promoting tourism, trade, and investment, while strengthening border management.”

Nandap highlighted its expected benefits, including enhanced regional security and safer travel, a secure and verifiable means of identification, and support for commerce and trade facilitation.

Other benefits are improved border processing and reduced delays, increased tourism and investment opportunities and deeper regional integration and cooperation,” she said.

The NIS CG acknowledged the diplomatic community, security agencies, media, and other stakeholders for their support.

Nandap also appreciated the ECOWAS Ambassadors accredited to Nigeria and development partners, including UN-IOM, EU, ICMPD, GIZ, and UNIDO, whose collaboration was instrumental to the project.

She emphasised that the ENBIC represented a major step toward a more secure and prosperous ECOWAS community and expressed confidence that its deployment would significantly boost regional mobility, economic development, and collective security

PoliticsKatsina Govt Introduce New Pension Reform Law For Timely, Efficient Payment To R by SJMag1(op): 2:10pm On Nov 28, 2025
The Katsina state government has introduced a new pension reform law to restore the timely and efficient payment to retirees across the state.

The attorney general and commissioner for justice, Fadila Dikko, announced this on Thursday, November 27, in Katsina.

She explained that the reform, signed into law by governor Dikko Radda, aims to streamline pension administration for workers at both the state and local government levels.

Represented by the solicitor general, Mohammed Coomassie, Dikko noted that the law was enacted in line with Section 173(1) of the 1999 Constitution.

She said it followed years of complaints about inaccurate pension data, rising liabilities and persistent delays in payments.

According to her, the government has also set up the state and local governments pension and gratuity reform committee to guide the implementation of the new framework.

She explained that the law retains the contributory defined benefits pension scheme for existing pensioners and workers with five years or fewer left before retirement.

A new contributory pension scheme has also been introduced, based on monthly remittances into individual pension accounts.

The law further establishes the state and local governments pension transition board, which will be responsible for paying retirement and death benefits to those exempted from the contributory system.

Additionally, a new pension bureau will oversee the remittance and investment of monthly contributions and assist eligible employees in opening retirement savings accounts.

The chairman of the pension and gratuity reform committee, Farouq Aminu, explained that workers with more than five years but less than 30 years left in service will operate under the contributory defined benefits scheme.

Under the revised structure, government contributions will amount to 13 per cent while employees will contribute seven per cent, bringing total monthly contributions to 20 per cent.

He added that newly employed workers with fewer than five years in service will be required to open retirement savings accounts for their pension deductions.

Aminu also announced an increase in the state’s minimum monthly pension from ₦5,000 to ₦10,000 to cushion the rising cost of living.

PoliticsTinubu Joins ECOWAS Leaders In Emergency Summit Over Guinea-bissau Coup by SJMag1(op): 8:52am On Nov 28, 2025
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday participated in an extraordinary virtual summit of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, aimed at addressing the rapidly developing political crisis in Guinea-Bissau, where the military on Wednesday, November 26, toppled the government and detained President Umaro Sissoco Embaló.

The high-level session, held via Zoom, brought together West African heads of state in an urgent effort to craft a unified diplomatic response to yet another coup shaking the region.

A photograph released by the State House Media Department captured Tinubu attending the meeting from Abuja.

The military takeover, executed just a day earlier, saw soldiers apprehend the president and install General Horta Nta Na Man as leader of a transitional administration expected to run for one year.

Tinubu, who served two consecutive terms as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government until June 2025, joined fellow leaders to assess the situation, weigh possible ECOWAS actions, and reaffirm the bloc’s established opposition to unconstitutional changes in government.

Thursday’s emergency gathering highlighted ECOWAS’ growing concern over the resurgence of coups across West Africa and its determination to curb further instability in the region.

The meeting also formed part of the bloc’s broader efforts to sustain pressure on ruling juntas, preserve democratic order, and address the regional security fallout of repeated military interventions.

PoliticsReps Call On FG To Take Swift Diplomatic Action For Jonathan’s Safe Return From by SJMag1(op): 3:52pm On Nov 27, 2025
The house of representatives called on the federal government to take swift diplomatic actions to ensure the safe return of former president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who is in Guinea-Bissau following a recent coup in the country.

The motion was raised during a plenary session on Thursday, November 27, initially focused on the struggles of ordinary Nigerians, when deputy speaker Benjamin Kalu highlighted an urgent matter for the house’s attention.

The floor was then yielded to the leader of the house, Julius Ihonvbere.

Ihonvbere informed lawmakers that Jonathan, widely recognized for peacefully conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election, was in Guinea-Bissau on an international election-monitoring assignment when the coup occurred.

He noted Jonathan’s extensive election-monitoring experience in countries including Zimbabwe, Liberia, Ghana, Mozambique, Pakistan, Tanzania, and South Africa on behalf of ECOWAS, the Commonwealth, the African Union, and Nigeria.

“Currently, he is in Guinea-Bissau due to the coup,” Ihonvbere said, stressing that while the house was not debating the coup itself, Jonathan’s safety is a matter of national importance.

He added that government authorities are aware of the situation and taking steps to ensure his return.

Minority leader Kingsley Chinda also supported the call, highlighting Jonathan’s democratic contributions and global engagement.

He urged that national concern for safety should extend to all Nigerians abroad.

“The importance we attach to his life should also apply to every other Nigerian, whether at home or abroad,” Chinda said.

The house subsequently adopted a resolution by voice vote, urging the federal government to use all diplomatic channels to facilitate Jonathan’s safe return.

The resolution underscored that the safety of citizens, including former leaders, should remain a priority in Nigeria’s foreign and domestic policy.

Business16 Banks Meet Regulatory Capital Requirements For Recapitalisation by SJMag1(op): 3:54pm On Nov 26, 2025
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that 16 banks have fully met the regulatory capital requirements after the recapitalisation program.

Speaking after the 303rd Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, November 25, Olayemi Cardoso, governor of CBN, expressed satisfaction with the resilience of the banking system, noting that most financial soundness indicators remain within regulatory thresholds.

He highlighted that 27 banks have raised capital through various means, with 16 achieving full compliance.

The MPC has urged the CBN to ensure the successful implementation and conclusion of the programme, aimed at strengthening banks’ financial buffers and creating a sector capable of supporting national economic growth.

Cardoso also noted that Nigerian banks expanding across Africa benefit from these stronger financial buffers, which enhance their ability to navigate risks in multiple countries.

The recapitalisation follows the CBN’s March 2024 directive increasing the minimum capital requirements for commercial banks with international licenses to ₦500 billion.

Several banks, including Zenith Bank and Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO), have raised substantial funds through share and bond issuances to meet these requirements.

PoliticsAFC Partners NGX To Strengthen Capital Market Capacity For Infrastructure Financ by SJMag1(op): 2:48pm On Nov 26, 2025
The Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) has partnered with the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) to strengthen capital market capacity for infrastructure financing.

In a statement issued on Monday, November 25, both institutions announced the completion of a two day capacity building workshop designed to strengthen expertise in infrastructure and project financing.

Held in Lagos earlier this month, the programme brought together key professionals from regulatory agencies, institutional investment firms, project development companies, and financial institutions.

The sessions focused on deepening participants’ understanding of project structuring, infrastructure finance, and the strategic role Nigeria’s capital markets can play in funding sustainable infrastructure.

According to the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Nigeria’s current infrastructure stock stands at 30 per cent far below the global benchmark of 70 per cent and could result in a $2.3tn shortfall by 2043.

The country requires an estimated $100bn annually to close this gap.

Banji Fehintola, executive board member and head of financial services at AFC, emphasised the importance of developing local capacity.

He said, “Bridging the continent’s infrastructure funding deficit requires strong local expertise and market structures capable of supporting complex, long-term projects.

“At AFC, we are committed not only to financing projects but also to strengthening the systems needed to deliver sustainable, bankable infrastructure solutions.

“Our partnership with NGX underscores our belief that Nigeria’s capital markets must play a pivotal role in mobilising domestic resources for long-term development.”

During the workshop, participants explored key concepts such as risk allocation, credit enhancement, and project design frameworks critical tools for preparing infrastructure assets for investment.

Discussions also covered innovative market instruments, including green bonds, infrastructure REITs, blended finance options, and partial risk guarantees, which offer practical strategies for attracting long term capital.

The chief executive officer of NGX, Jude Chiemeka, stressed the importance of developing specialised knowledge within the market ecosystem.

Chiemeka stated, “As capital markets become more central in financing Africa’s development, building robust technical expertise across the sector is essential.

“Through NGX X-Academy, we are equipping market operators with the skills to originate, structure, and manage infrastructure investments that meet local development needs while aligning with global standards.”

He noted that the collaboration with AFC is a significant step toward strengthening institutional capacity to attract and deploy long term capital efficiently across Nigeria and the broader region.

The workshop represents a milestone in the deepening partnership between the AFC and NGX.

Both organisations indicated that they intend to expand on this momentum with follow-up programmes aimed at converting the lessons learned into practical financing solutions for key infrastructure projects.

PoliticsLawmaker Call For Suspension Of Parliamentary Activities Over Rising Insecurity by SJMag1(op): 12:01pm On Nov 26, 2025
A member of the house of representatives, Alhassan Doguwa, on Tuesday, November 25, called for the suspension of parliamentary activities over rising insecurity in the country.

The lawmaker made his comments during plenary while criticizing the handling of security issues under president Bola Tinubu-led government.

Doguwa, who represents the Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency, said many Nigerians were struggling to carry out daily activities because of the growing insecurity across communities.

In a video posted on Facebook, the lawmaker said, “The country is running in, blood and tears. You cannot go, the farmers cannot go to farm. Our traders cannot go to the market.”

He used this to highlight how fear and violence were affecting basic livelihoods.

“Worshippers cannot go to mosques or churches. Then what are you legislating here?” This part of his statement questioned the relevance of continuing legislative work amid widespread insecurity,” he added.

Doguwa then urged the speaker, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen and lawmakers to take a strong stand, saying, “Honorable speaker, if the government is not prepared to actually do the right thing that will protect the lives and property of our people, I urge you, I urge on this honorable house, as a house of the people of Nigeria, to stand up to pay the supreme cost.”

He used the remark to press for urgent action from the executive.

He further proposed the suspension of legislative activities, saying, “And that is no more than to shut this house down and to call an emergency on any legislative issue and wait until the right thing is taken by the government of the day.”

He argued that halting proceedings would send a clear message about the seriousness of the situation.

Doguwa reminded members that the constitution placed security responsibilities on the federal government, while also holding state governments accountable.

He noted that insecurity affected virtually every constituency and was not tied to religion, party or ethnicity.

He explained that the growing insecurity could affect national activities, including future elections, and said lawmakers needed to review their oversight roles.

“Honorable speaker, we can even declare a legislative emergency. Close the house, shut it up. Who are you legislating for?”

Doguwa also spoke about his constituency, describing increased incidents of kidnapping around the Falgore game reserve.

He said the frequency of such incidents had become a daily concern for residents.

He also encouraged lawmakers to continue working collectively on security issues, noting that cooperation across all regions and political backgrounds was necessary.

CrimeOyo Court Sentence 5 Men To Death By Hanging For Murder Of Taxi Driver by SJMag1(op): 2:38pm On Nov 25, 2025
The Oyo state high court in Ibadan on Monday sentenced five men to death by hanging for their involvement in the murder of a taxi driver, Akeem Shittu.

The defendants identified as Segun Taiwo (36), Kehinde Ademola (46), Yahaya Adeniyi (45), Chinonso Samson (41), and Opadotun Michael (32) were found guilty on charges of conspiracy and murder.

The offences contravened sections 316, 319, and 324 of the criminal code laws of Oyo state, 2000.

Justice Oyeyemi Ajayi ruled that the prosecution had established a clear case of joint participation.

“I am of the considered view that this court can safely infer conspiracy in the events that led to the death of Akeem Shittu,” she said.

She added that the circumstantial evidence sufficiently proved coordinated action by the defendants.

Justice Ajayi sentenced each defendants to 20 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder and death by hanging for murder.

Prosecution counsel, K. K. Oloso, told the court that the incident occurred on April 10, 2024, around 8:30 p.m. at Elepe, Arulogun road, Ojoo, Ibadan.

Shittu reportedly collided with a motorcycle carrying two riders, which escalated into a dispute that continued at a nearby pub.

The deceased was asked to pay ₦50,000 for treatment but offered ₦8,000 instead which led to him being detained and stripped naked.

He later fled the scene, only to be pursued, overpowered, and hacked to death with a machete.

His taxi was subsequently found parked in front of one of the defendants’ wife’s shop.

PoliticsWitness Tells Court How $6bn Mambilla Power Project Contract Document Was Forged by SJMag1(op): 1:59pm On Nov 25, 2025
A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of former minister of power and steel, Olu Agunloye, told a federal high court in Abuja on Monday that the contract award document for the execution of the $6 billion Mambilla power project was forged.

Agunloye is standing trial on an amended seven-count charge bordering on official corruption and the fraudulent award of the Mambilla project, valued at $6 billion.

Testifying before Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie, the third prosecution witness, Umar Hussein Babangida, said investigators concluded that the contract letter issued to Sunrise Power and Transmission Company Limited (SPTCL) was backdated and misrepresented.

He made the statement during cross-examination by defence counsel, Adeola Adedipe, SAN.

Babangida told the court that the document, dated May 22, 2003, was examined during the investigation.

He said the content of the letter contradicted information gathered during the probe.

“The award document was a false representation of itself, it was compared with the information contained in it.

“It contained false information and misrepresentation of facts, I did not compare it with another document because the document itself is a certified true copy,” Babangida said.

He informed the court that records obtained from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting of May 21, 2003, showed that 40 ministers, including Agunloye, were present.

The witness also confirmed that he interviewed the then attorney-general of the federation, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo during the investigation.

When asked if the interview reports were documented, Babangida said the discussions were oral, but noted that former President Obasanjo had also written a letter to the current attorney-general on the matter.

He added that he did not interview the then vice-president, Atiku Abubakar.

Justice Onwuegbuzie adjourned further cross-examination of the witness to December 1, 2025.

The Benue state police command has arrested a Fulani herdsman and two others, following a deadly attack on Anwule community in Ohimini Local Government Area (LGA).

The attack left several people, including a pastor, dead.

The suspects, identified as Isah Peter, who is the acting commander of Eguma community vigilante group, and Moses Peter from Agatu LGA, along with the herdsman, were apprehended after weeks of investigation.

Isah reportedly used a community-owned firearm to carry out the attack.

Following his arrest, 22 year old Isah told the police he acted on instructions from a man known only as “Pepper,” who supplied the weapon used in the attack.

He also admitted involvement in multiple violent incidents along the Otukpo-Oweto highway which has become notorious over the past year for attacks on travelers, including kidnappings and killings.

PoliticsTinubu Order Withdrawal Of VIP Police Escorts, Reassign Officers To Community Po by SJMag1(op): 1:41pm On Nov 24, 2025
President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate withdrawal of Very Important Person (VIP) police escorts across the country, instructing that they be reassigned to strengthen community policing efforts nationwide.

Tinubu issued the directive during a security meeting held at the state house with the inspector-general of police, the chiefs of army and air staff, and the director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement made by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy, on Sunday, November 23, said Tinubu ordered that the personnel be redeployed to core policing duties in communities.

Under the new arrangement, VIPs who require security protection will now be expected to request armed personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), rather than the police.

The presidency said the move is aimed at boosting police presence in communities, especially remote areas where stations are understaffed and citizens remain vulnerable to attacks.

“Many parts of Nigeria, especially remote areas, have few policemen at the stations, thus making the task of protecting and defending the people difficult,” the statement read, noting that Tinubu wants officers to concentrate on their core police duties.

To reinforce the new push, Tinubu has also approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional police officers nationwide, with plans underway to upgrade training facilities in collaboration with state governments.

The presidency said the directive forms part of a broader security strategy intended to strengthen law enforcement capacity and improve public safety across the country.
