‎A Nigerian citizen, identified as James, also known as Emmanuel Chukwunonso Samson, has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of ₹1 lakh (₦1,698,330) by the Special Court for Essential Commodities (EC) Act in Coimbatore, India.

‎‎The conviction follows an international drug trafficking case investigated by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

‎‎The case dates back to July 17, 2012, when officers from the NCB’s Chennai Zonal Unit, acting on a tip-off, intercepted three suspicious parcels at a courier facility in Chennai.

‎‎The contraband, concealed in ladies’ handbags, cardboard gaskets for cars, and embroidery materials, was intended for shipment to destinations including West Africa, Australia, and Spain.

‎‎“NCB arrested James from Erode for his involvement in the smuggling and seized four kg of ganja from him during subsequent investigation.”

‎‎On Saturday, September 20, the Coimbatore court delivered its verdict, sentencing the accused to prison and imposing a fine of ₹1 lakh (₦1,698,330).

BusinessNBS Set For Financial Autonomy As Lawmakers Push Independence Reforms by SJMag1(op): 4:05pm On Sep 20, 2025
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) is set to gain financial autonomy as lawmakers push for reforms to strengthen the agency’s independence and improve the credibility of national data.

The chairman of the house committee on national planning, Gboyega Isiaka, disclosed this in Abuja on Friday, September 19 while receiving a delegation from the Liberian house of representatives on a bilateral exchange visit.

He explained that the committee’s priority is to guarantee adequate funding, transparency, and public confidence in the statistics generated by NBS for Nigeria’s development planning.

Isiaka revealed that a key reform under consideration is the establishment of a National Tax Trust Fund, which will allow stakeholders that benefit from NBS data, such as government agencies, development partners, and private sector players, to contribute towards securing sustainable and reliable funding.

He added that the new legislation would empower the bureau to collect data directly from private sector entities, a move he said would expand NBS’s coverage and reliability.

He stressed that financial autonomy was necessary if the agency was to deliver timely and dependable statistics without being constrained by budgetary delays.

According to Isiaka, the existing NBS Act, which was originally enacted in 1957 and last amended in 2007, has become outdated, leaving loopholes and funding gaps that weaken the bureau’s effectiveness.

The reform bill, which has already passed first reading at the house of representatives, seeks to overhaul the framework by which the bureau operates.

He said, “The bill aims to enhance NBS independence, especially in funding, moving beyond reliance on government budget allocations, the National Strategic developmental Statistics 2024 to 2028 assigns greater responsibilities to the bureau.

The Liberian delegation, led by Mike Jurry, chairman of the Ways, Means, and Finance Committee, commended Nigeria’s progress in strengthening its statistical infrastructure.

Jurry said Liberia, with a population of about 5.2 million, was eager to learn from Nigeria’s experience in managing data for a population exceeding 200 million.

Earlier this year, the federal government reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the independence of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), assuring that the agency would continue to operate without interference while providing reliable socio economic data for national development.

The minister of budget and economic planning,Abubakar Bagudu, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by a World Bank delegation led by country director Ndiame Diop and Practice Manager for West and Central Africa, Johan Mistiaen.

Bagudu commended the NBS for its consistent track record of producing credible and timely statistical reports, some analysts have argued that the current NBS is losing its credibility.

President Tinubu was joined on the visit by a high-powered delegation that included Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, several other governors, National Assembly leaders, ministers, and senior government officials.

The entourage featured Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, alongside Governors Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara, Mai Mala Buni of Yobe, Babagana Zulum of Borno, and Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto.

Also in the delegation were key members of the Federal Executive Council: Wale Edun, Minister of Finance; Atiku Bagudu, Minister of Budget and Planning; Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence; and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

President Tinubu was received by Buhari’s widow, Aisha, her eldest son, Yusuf, and other relatives and associates of the deceased leader.

President Tinubu said the family is not alone in grief.

”We are just here to assure you that we share in your grief, we share in your pain.

”A loss in flesh is not a loss in the spirit, and the spirit that he left with us is a spirit of hard work, dedication, patriotism and honesty, and we are doing that.

“We assure you and the entire family that we will continue with our leader’s legacy, the mark he made for Nigeria. We will continue on the path of honesty, integrity, and great character that he imbued in us.

“May God help Nigeria, keep us united and together in the promised land,” the President said.

Aisha Buhari thanked the President and his government for supporting the family in their grief.

She said the visit by the President and his delegation was a source of consolation.

“I would like to use this medium to thank you once again, the first lady, the wife of the Vice President, for standing by me and my family”, she said.

Aisha said her late husband stood for honesty, integrity and justice, urging Nigerians to emulate his virtues.

CrimeNigerian Man Arrested In UK Over $235,000 Fraud Against US University Using Fake by SJMag1(op): 3:02pm On Sep 19, 2025
United Kingdom (UK) authorities have arrested a Nigerian national, Farouk Adekunle Adepoju, following a request from the United States (U.S) for his extradition on charges of wire and computer fraud, according to acting U.S. attorney Troy Rivetti.

He is accused of manipulating email settings, setting up a fake email account, and deceiving Pennsylvania university into wiring $235,266.80 to a fraudulent bank account.

Adepoju, taken into custody on Monday, September 15, is awaiting transfer to the U.S. to face a seven-count indictment filed in the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Court documents stated that between March and April 2023, Adepoju gained unauthorized access to a computer system belonging to a construction company contracted by a Pennsylvania university.

The stolen funds remain unrecovered.

“Adepoju is charged with using sophisticated cyber means to illegally access accounts belonging to a business in order to victimize one of our region’s universities,” Rivetti said.

“Even from halfway across the world, however, Adepoju was not beyond the investigative reach of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Pittsburgh special agent in charge Kevin Rojek said, “Criminals who think they can reach across the globe into the United States to line their pockets at the expense of the American public need know one thing: the FBI and our partners are not going to let you get away with it.”

Adepoju faces six counts of wire fraud and one count of computer fraud, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years and five years in prison respectively.

PoliticsKenya Airways Settle NCAA Sanction For Breaches Involving Nigerian Passenger by SJMag1(op): 12:03pm On Sep 19, 2025
Kenya Airways has settled the sanction imposed by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) for consumer protection breaches, including the high profile case involving Nigerian passenger Gloria Ibukun Omisore.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Thursday, September 18, by Michael Achimugu, NCAA’s director of public affairs and consumer protection, via his official Xsocial media platform.

While acknowledging the airline’s compliance with the fine, the NCAA stressed that payment alone does not resolve the systemic issues that triggered the penalties.

The statement read, “After a number of meetings, including a visit to the NCAA by the Kenyan High Commissioner to Nigeria and officials from the airline and JKIA, Kenya Airways has, on Wednesday 17/09/2025, paid the sanction fee as penalty for the Gloria Omisore and other consumer protection-related infractions.

“While commending the airline for complying with the determination of the NCAA, we must remind that the timeframe for the resolution of the cases for which this sanction was announced has since elapsed. Therefore, the payment of sanction fines does not conclude the issues.”

The penalties stem from an incident in February, when Omisore was allegedly denied boarding on the second leg of her connecting flight from Nairobi to Paris, despite holding a ticket from Lagos to Manchester via Nairobi and Paris.

Kenya Airways claimed she lacked the required Schengen visa for transit and instead offered an alternative route through London, which she allegedly declined. The dispute escalated into a verbal altercation, with the airline accusing Omisore of inappropriate behavior.

Achimugu, however, faulted Kenya Airways’ handling of the case, citing what he described as a recurring pattern of mistreatment of Nigerian passengers.

He questioned why the airline allowed Omisore to board the Lagos flight in the first place despite the visa concerns and criticized the carrier for failing to provide timely alternatives and adequate support during the incident.

The NCAA has also requested CCTV footage to back up the airline’s claims.

While acknowledging that Kenya Airways promptly paid the fine, the NCAA stressed that compliance with financial penalties does not resolve deeper operational shortcomings.

The regulator emphasized that the airline must take concrete steps to improve its passenger management and operational protocols.

The authority added that it will continue to closely monitor Kenya Airways’ operations in Nigeria to ensure compliance with consumer protection standards and safeguard passengers’ rights.

PoliticsOkpebholo Calls For Fg’s Urgent Intervention In Edo–delta Boundary Dispute by SJMag1(op): 11:23am On Sep 19, 2025
Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo, has called for the federal government to urgently intervene in the long-standing boundary dispute between Edo and Delta states to forestall any outbreak of communal conflict.

Represented by his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, the governor made the appeal on Wednesday, September 17, during an assessment visit to the disputed areas, accompanied by senior security officials and members of the state executive.

Okpebholo cautioned individuals and corporate bodies against taking undue advantage of the unsettled boundary question to encroach on Edo territory, stressing that the issue is already before the National Boundary Commission(NBC) for resolution.

The governor’s intervention followed complaints of incursions by Delta state authorities and attempts by some companies to commence activities on the contested land.

The disputed boundary stretches between Urhonigbe in Orhionmwon local government area of Edo state and Umutu in Ukwuani local government area of Delta state.

While addressing residents of Urhonigbe, Okpebholo assured them that his government will continue to defend their rights and interests.

He, however, urged the people to remain calm, noting that the matter is being handled at the federal level with due diligence.

“We are here to see firsthand the disputed boundary and the actual demarcation. We appeal to the federal government and president Bola Tinubu to direct the NBC to step in and expedite action so that this issue can be resolved once and for all,” Okpebholo said.

“This River Ethiope is a natural boundary. We don’t want any crisis in the south-south or between Edo and Delta states. We are brothers, having once been Bendel state. We want peace, and we want the right thing done quickly.

“Please don’t take the law into your hands. As a government, we will continue to safeguard the territorial integrity of Edo state, but we must maintain peace and harmony with our neighbours while the NBC does its work.”

The governor stressed that his administration is committed to protecting Edo’s territorial rights, but will approach the matter with justice, calm, and strict adherence to due process.

“Our ultimate goal is to ensure justice, preserve harmony, and protect the integrity of our people and our state,” he added.

The assistant inspector-general of police, Zone 5, Salman-Dogo Garba, called on the communities to maintain peace, stressing that Edo and Delta remain united partners in progress and development, regardless of the ongoing land dispute.

“I appeal to the communities: Edo and Delta are still brothers despite this disagreement. Be peaceful, avoid violence, and don’t take up arms over this matter as it is already before the NBC,” Garba cautioned.

PoliticsFG Refutes Dangote’s Claims On Ajaokuta Steel Company, Vows To Revive Moribund by SJMag1(op): 10:59am On Sep 19, 2025
The federal government has refuted recent claims by billionaire industrialist Aliko Dangote that the Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited is beyond revitalisation, insisting that it remains committed to bringing the decades old moribund plant into productive use.

In a related directive, the government has given mining and quarrying companies licensed by the Nigerian Mining Cadastral Office (MCO) since last year until December 31 to conclude Community Development Agreements (CDAs) with their host communities.

The minister of solid minerals development, Dele Alake, issued the directive after reviewing company performance on CDA compliance for the first half of the year.

The review, based on a report by the Mines Environmental Compliance (MEC) department, showed that only 24 CDAs were signed in the first six months of the year, despite the issuance of 74 new mineral titles within the same period.

Alake said, “In 2023, the MCO granted 960 Small Scale Mining Licences, 391 Quarry Licences, and 37 Mining Leases totalling 1,388 titles. Each of these is required by law to enter into CDAs prior to commencing extraction.

“The year before, 728 Small Scale Licences, 198 Quarry Licences, and 28 Mining Leases were issued a total of 954 mineral titles whose holders were equally obliged to engage with communities and sign CDAs before initiating operations.”

He highlighted the significant gap between the thousands of mineral titles issued and the mere 342 CDAs signed so far, stressing the urgent need for improved compliance.

He added, “Under this administration, responsible mining marked by adherence to international Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards will be the norm. We will not permit companies to commence mining without first engaging host communities and committing to development projects that address their needs.”

Speaking on Ajaokuta steel complex, the ministry of steel development, stated that though the federal government acknowledged the challenges with completing the project, it was determined to turn the company around.

It said another technical and financial audit of the firm was being undertaken, and the outcome of the exercise would point the way forward.

The ministry stated, “While we note the concerns expressed, it is important to state that the federal government remains firmly committed to the development of Nigeria’s steel sector, including the resuscitation of ASCL.

“A comprehensive technical and financial audit of the plant is presently underway to ensure that any decision taken is transparent, data-driven and in the best interest of Nigeria.

“The overall assessment of the previous technical audit report dated 2018 maintained that the general status of the steel plant is in robust condition except for normal deterioration of replaceable parts and recommended automation of manual control systems for improved efficiency.”

It also expressed confidence that the updated audit will provide a sound basis for decisive action that advances Nigeria’s industrial aspirations.

“The federal government is determined to build a competitive and modern steel industry that supports national industrialisation and infrastructure growth,” it concluded.

Alake further noted that the ministry has already taken punitive action against firms that defaulted on annual service fees by revoking their titles.

He noted, “To extract minerals without entering into agreements with host communities is not only unjust it constitutes criminal expropriation.

“Any company found to be in breach after the deadline will face licence revocation and be compelled to pay reparations for the resources unlawfully removed.”

He urged host communities to establish capable CDA negotiation teams, preferably including retired professionals, whose expertise can help secure sustainable legacy projects that benefit youths, women, and the wider community.

Alake also cautioned traditional rulers and community leaders against compromising negotiations by seeking personal inducements from companies or recommending contractors who deliver substandard projects, thereby diverting benefits meant for the people.

He further commended the director of the mines environmental compliance department, Vivian Okono, for her decisive action in ordering the closure of three firms Istanbul, Venus, and Cornerstone last month over delays in concluding CDAs with their host communities.

“That action should serve as a clear signal, it is no longer business as usual,” he declared.

PoliticsLagos Government Roll Out 10 Ambulance Bikes To Boost Pre-hospital Care, Emergen by SJMag1(op): 3:48pm On Sep 17, 2025
The Lagos state government on Tuesday, September 16, rolled out 10 new Motorcycle Response Unit (MRU), widely referred to as ‘Ambulance bikes.’

The bikes were officially handed to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) to boost pre-hospital care and slash emergency response times across the city.

Outfitted with critical medical equipment, the motorcycles are designed to maneuver through heavy traffic, narrow lanes, and other challenging areas, allowing paramedics to reach patients swiftly when every second counts.

At the launch, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, special adviser to the governor on health, praised the project as a bold and innovative measure to address the complexities of emergency medical services in a bustling metropolis like Lagos

“These Ambu-bikes are Lagos’ response to our unique traffic situation. They will reach patients faster than conventional ambulances, deliver immediate treatment, and, where necessary, call in larger ambulance units for evacuation.

“This saves precious time and ultimately saves more lives,” Ogunyemi said.

She noted that each of the 220cc superbikes comes fully equipped with essential life-saving instruments, including sphygmomanometers, stethoscopes, pulse oximeters, nebulizers, glucometers, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), oxygen kits, radios, sirens, and specialized protective gear for the riders.

She added that trained paramedics will operate the units, providing first aid and basic life support for emergencies such as collapses, bleeding, or respiratory distress while awaiting the arrival of full-scale ambulances

“These bikes have almost everything except a bed. Our paramedics can administer CPR, control bleeding, give IV fluids, and stabilize patients on the spot,” she noted.

Ogunyemi emphasized that governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s swift endorsement of the project under the THEMES+ agenda underscores his administration’s dedication to advancing healthcare innovation

“Once the proposal was presented with data, the governor immediately approved it. This is another first in Nigeria, Lagos once again setting the pace,” she remarked.

Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, permanent secretary of the ministry of health, stated that the initiative is a key component of the state’s five-year plan to revolutionize pre-hospital emergency services.

He highlighted that Lagos has already deployed mobile intensive care units and a boat ambulance, with plans in progress to incorporate air ambulances into the emergency response network

“The concept is simple: bikes beat the traffic, paramedics intervene immediately, and ambulances take over for evacuation.

“This seamless system reduces mortality rates and increases survival chances,” Ogboye said.

Also speaking, the director of LASAMBUS, Beatrice Makinde, described the development as a ‘game-changer’ for emergency services in Lagos.

“For years, traffic gridlock has slowed our response efforts. With these ambulance bikes, we can now reach victims in record time, improve survival chances, and provide Lagosians with the emergency service they deserve,” Makinde said.

PoliticsFire Outbreak Razes Plaza In Lagos Market by SJMag1(op): 2:22pm On Sep 17, 2025
A significant fire broke out on Tuesday evening at Emab Plaza, a four-storey commercial building located behind Mandilas on Taiwo Street, Lagos Island.

The fire reportedly began on the fourth floor around 7:23 p.m. and quickly spread to neighboring apartments and nearby structures.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service acted quickly after receiving the emergency call, dispatching teams from the Ebute Elefun and Oniru stations. Deputy Controller General Olajide Ogabi confirmed that crews were on the scene working to bring the fire under control.

“We do not yet know what caused the fire, but our teams responded promptly and are actively working to contain it,” Ogabi said.

Residents and traders in the area described tense moments as the flames intensified. Many were forced to leave the area, while firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Earlier in the day, another fire broke out at Afriland Tower on Broad Street, Lagos Island. Authorities have urged residents and traders in the area to avoid the vicinity until the fire is fully under control.

No casualties have been reported so far. The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the cause of the Emab Plaza fire remains under investigation and emphasized that safety measures in commercial buildings need to be strengthened to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The fire at Emab plaza highlights ongoing concerns about fire preparedness in Lagos Island’s busy commercial districts, particularly as multiple incidents have occurred within a short period. Residents continue to monitor the situation while firefighters battle to fully extinguish the flames.

PoliticsI Do Not Believe The Ajaokuta Steel Company Will Ever Succeed – Dangote by SJMag1(op): 1:31pm On Sep 17, 2025
Aliko Dangote, founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Dangote Group, stated that he does not believe the Ajaokuta steel company will ever succeed.

Speaking on Tuesday, September 15, Dangote highlighted the critical role of a robust steel industry in national development but expressed doubts about Ajaokuta’s viability due to its longstanding challenges.

He likened efforts to revive the steel company to attempting to modernize outdated technology in comparison with current advancements.

He said, “I do not believe the Ajaokuta steel company will ever succeed.

“There is no nation that you can build without a steel industry and honestly within us here, Ajaokuta will not work. We can keep deceiving ourselves and keep being passionate about it, but it’s not possible.

“It like you now, if you remember those vehicles we used to produce from Volkswagen (Igala) if you bring Igala now, would you now compare it to the current Kia. No, things have changed.

“Things have changed and all of us have to keep changing or you will become archaic.

“You have to change, now, when you carry something like Ajaokuta is like you going to the grave yard to bring a dead person or you go to the hospital to bring somebody who is on the dying bed to come and run 100 meters. It’s totally impossible.”

In September 2022, the Nigerian government agreed to pay $496 million to settle a claim by an Indian firm regarding the facility.

The dispute arose following the federal government’s 2008 revocation of an agreement that had granted the firm control over both the steelworks and the National Iron Ore Mining Company.

By December 2022, the government reported that 11 companies had expressed interest in taking over the steel company on a concession basis.

Among these bidders, three were Russian firms, according to the then minister of mines and steel development, Olamilekan Adegbite, who outlined his ministry’s achievements.

After assuming office in August 2023, the minister of steel development, Shuaibu Audu, pledged to revive the steel company.

He stated that he would establish a roadmap for the development of the steel sector, actively pursue the completion of Ajaokuta Steel company, and introduce the necessary legislation to regulate the industry.

In September 2024, the Nigerian government signed an agreement with a Russian consortium for the rehabilitation, completion, and operation of both the Ajaokuta Steel Plant and the National Iron Ore Mining company in Kogi State.

PoliticsADC Unveils Coalition To End ‘godfather Politics’ In Akwa Ibom by SJMag1(op): 11:09am On Sep 16, 2025
The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has launched a broad coalition in Akwa Ibom State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The coalition brings together stakeholders from various opposition parties, including 2023 governorship candidates such as Senator John James Akpanudoedehe of the NNPP, Dr. Uduak Udoh of the Labour Party, Prince Jeremiah Akpan of Action Alliance, and Austin Ekanem, former APC state chairman.

Speaking at the unveiling in Uyo on Saturday, September 13, the state coalition chairman, Duke Dick, said the movement was designed to reclaim, renew, and re-anchor democracy in the will of the people.

He stressed that the coalition would reject old politics of godfatherism, money-driven campaigns, and unfulfilled promises, and instead champion inclusion, transparency, and accountability.

“Our mission is to break the chains of corruption and exclusion,” Dick declared.

He emphasized the coalition’s focus on empowering youths, women, and diaspora communities while harnessing Akwa Ibom’s natural and human resources for development.

Senator Akpanudoedehe urged citizens to support the coalition in removing what he described as the current insensitive and mean government, while calling for unity to ensure credible candidates emerge victorious in 2027. Labour Party’s Dr. Udoh echoed this, stressing the need for quality candidates and inclusiveness.

ADC’s Assistant National Organising Secretary (South South), Dr. Ben Smith, acknowledged the poverty, hardship, and insecurity facing the state and Nigeria, attributing them to bad governance. He described the ADC as God’s solution, offering a platform free from godfather influence.

Coalition youth leader Edidiong Ekpe and woman leader Juliet Amba pledged grassroots mobilization and unity among members.

The highlight of the event was the official hoisting of the ADC flag by state chairman Duke Dick, symbolizing the coalition’s resolve to present a united front in the 2027 elections.

PoliticsFG Orders Suspension Of 4 Percent Customs FOB Levy On Imports by SJMag1(op): 10:53am On Sep 16, 2025
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has ordered the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, to halt the enforcement of the 4 percent Free on Board, FOB, levy on imports.

The directive, conveyed in a circular titled “Suspension of the Implementation of four per cent FOB Charge by the Nigeria Customs Service”, was issued on September 15, 2025, and signed by Raymond Omachi, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary for Special Duties.

When the levy was first introduced in February 2025, it drew sharp criticism from manufacturers, importers, and clearing agents, who warned that the measure would fuel inflation and disrupt trade. The concerns resurfaced after its reintroduction in August 2025, with stakeholders pressing for its reversal.

Edun acknowledged these concerns, stressing that the levy could undermine trade facilitation, weaken Nigeria’s competitiveness, and unsettle the wider economy.

“Pursuant to the powers vested in the Honourable Minister of Finance under Part III, Section 12 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, as Chairman of the Board of Customs, I hereby direct the immediate suspension of the collection of the four per cent FOB recently levied on all imports,” the circular stated.

He explained that the suspension would pave the way for more extensive consultations with stakeholders and allow for a detailed evaluation of the levy’s structure and economic consequences. According to him, this review aims to produce a fairer, more effective revenue system that balances government funding needs with sustainable growth.

Edun further instructed the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, to strictly enforce the suspension order.

The 4 percent FOB charge stems from the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, which mandates that Customs receive not less than 4 percent of the free-on-board value of imports according to international best practices. It was designed to replace earlier fees — the 1% Comprehensive Import Supervision Scheme, CISS, and the 7 percent cost of collection surcharge.

Officials defended the levy as a more reliable financing source for Customs operations, particularly in funding modernisation projects such as digital clearance systems, non-intrusive inspections, and risk management tools. The aim was to reduce reliance on the Federation Account and grant Customs greater financial independence.

Despite these justifications, the policy faced strong resistance from groups like the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, customs brokers, and importers, who insisted that the levy either be suspended or reviewed through broader consultation.

PoliticsTinubu’s Directive On Restoring Democracy In Rivers Achieved – Ibas Declares by SJMag1(op): 3:56pm On Sep 13, 2025
Ibok-Ete Ibas, sole administrator of Rivers state, has declared that he has carried out president Bola Tinubu’s directive by restoring ‘full democratic governance’ in the state.

Ibas made the statement on Friday, September 12, at the government house in Port Harcourt while receiving the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) report on the recently concluded local government elections.

The elections, held on Saturday, August 30, across 23 local government areas, were trailed by debate over whether a sole administrator had the authority to supervise the democratic process.

The outcome saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) claim victory in 20 councils, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured three.

At the presentation ceremony, Ibas said the successful conduct of the polls demonstrated that the president’s mandate had been ‘substantially met.’

He added that his administration would study the RSIEC report and release an official white paper in response.

“President’s mandate to me was clear: to stabilise the state, create an enabling environment for the re-establishment of its institutions, and return Rivers State back to full democratic governance,” Ibas said.

“With the successful conduct and swearing-in of local government chairmen and their councils, I believe we have decisively achieved the mandate that we were given.”

Mike Odey, the RSIEC chairman, said the document provides a comprehensive record of the local government elections.

He praised residents of the state for taking part in the exercise peacefully and in an orderly manner.

“The report highlights our modest achievements, our challenges, and provides key recommendations that will strengthen the future,” he said.

On March 18, president Bola Tinubu imposed emergency rule in Rivers state following a deepening political crisis.

As part of the measure, he placed Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and the entire state assembly on a six-month suspension.

Tinubu then named retired naval chief Ibok-Ete Ibas as the state’s sole administrator to oversee affairs during the emergency period.

The six-month intervention is scheduled to lapse on Thursday, September 18.

PoliticsPolice Arrests Man Parading Himself As Obi Of Lagos by SJMag1(op): 3:44pm On Sep 11, 2025
The Lagos state police command has arrested a 65 year old man, Chibuike Azubike, for parading himself as the ‘Obi of Lagos.’

He was apprehended alongside three alleged accomplices while attempting to stage an unlawful unveiling ceremony.

The arrest comes against the backdrop of growing ethnic tension, particularly among youths on various social media platforms, who exchanged banters over Azubike’s planned installation.

Azubike, said to be an indigene of the Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in the Ideato North local government area of Imo state, was arrested with Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).

The four are currently being held at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

Intelligence revealed that the suspects planned to unveil a prototype of a purported Palace of Obi of Lagos state and celebrate an Ofala/new yam festival on Saturday, 13 September, at Apple Hall, Amuwo Odofin.

“An invitation card obtained by the police described the programme as the unveiling of the ‘N1.5 billion Palace of Obi of Lagos state and the celebration of the first Ofala/new yam festival.”

The command noted that the venue was swiftly sealed off by security operatives to prevent public disturbance and protect unsuspecting citizens from being deceived.

The commissioner of police, Olohundare Jimoh, said tactical teams, including the Eko strike force, were deployed to the location to maintain law and order.

He added that investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged in court once concluded.

Jimoh further warned residents to be vigilant against impostors exploiting cultural and traditional institutions, stressing that such acts are illegal and capable of disturbing public peace.

This is not the first time that the police would make such arrest.

PoliticsPolice Defend Legality Of Tinted-glass Permit Amid NBA Court Challenge by SJMag1(op): 12:05pm On Sep 11, 2025
The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, has defended its tinted-glass permit policy, insisting it is backed by law, following a lawsuit filed by the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, seeking to nullify the measure.

The NBA recently approached the Federal High Court to challenge the policy introduced in April by Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, describing it as an infringement on citizens’ fundamental rights.

Responding in a statement on Wednesday, Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin described the NBA’s position as misleading and an attempt to cast aspersions on the image, integrity, and lawful operations of the force.

Citing section 2(3a) of the Motor Vehicles (Prohibition of Tinted Glass) Act, 2004, Hundeyin explained that the IGP, or any officer delegated by him, is empowered to grant permits for tinted glass use when applicants demonstrate valid reasons, either for health or security.

“The essence of this regulation is consistent with the core mandate of the police to prevent crimes, as the permit is a critical tool for curbing violent crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, terrorism, and one-chance operations,” the statement reads.

He further clarified that fees charged for the permits are purely processing fees to maintain digital infrastructure, stressing that section 26 of the Nigeria Police Act, 2020, authorises the police to provide specialised services for a fee.

According to Hundeyin, the electronic Central Motor Registry, e-CMR, which is linked to the permit system, has played a vital role in tracking and recovering stolen vehicles nationwide. He maintained that the IGP remains committed to professionalism, transparency, and protecting citizens’ rights.

“The alleged claims by individuals and groups that the tinted permit policy is not legal, transparent, and constitutionally valid are not only untrue and misleading but also a calculated attempt to misinform the public,” the police PRO said

PoliticsCourt Deny Bail To 5 Terrorists For Killing Worshipers In Ondo Catholic Church by SJMag1(op): 3:54pm On Sep 10, 2025
The federal high court in Abuja on Wednesday, September 10, denied bail to five persons accused of masterminding the bombing of a catholic church in Owo, Ondo state.

The Department of State Services (DSS) had on the 11th of August, 2025, arraigned the five men before Justice Emeka Nwite over their involvement in the June 5, 2022, attack at St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo in Ondo state.

The five persons, Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Otuho Abubakar are to face trial for the attack, which claimed over 40 lives and left over 100 individuals injured.

The accused are said to be members of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

During the hearing of the case, justice Emeka Nwite dismissed the bail application, citing the capital nature of the terrorism charges.

The judge also cited the potential for the accused, who he said are members of a strong terrorist organization, to intimidate witnesses, influence the trial, or flee if released.

Justice Nwite upheld the arguments of the DSS, which asserted that the evidence against the suspects is substantial.

The DSS lawyer, Callistus Eze, had also argued that the men posed a significant flight risk due to the severity of the charges.

The judge noted that the defense lawyers did not challenge these claims.

PropertiesPDP Slams Senate For Stopping Akpoti-uduaghan’s Resumption, Calls Action Unconst by SJMag1(op): 3:48pm On Sep 10, 2025
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has slammed the senate’s move to bar senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from returning to the chamber following her six-month suspension, calling the action ‘unconstitutional’.

The party’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, made the disclosure in a statement on Tuesday, September 9.

“This reported action smacks of a calculated attempt being orchestrated by the senator Akpabio-led All Progressives Congress (APC) senate leadership to abridge the right of representation of the people of Kogi central senatorial district and deny them a voice at the highest law-making body in the country,” the statement read.

The PDP has strongly condemned the move to use the national assembly against an elected senator, labeling it a ‘gross violation’ of both the 1999 constitution and the senate’s standing rules.

The party described the action as provocative and a serious threat to democracy and national stability.

In its statement, the PDP accused the APC-led government of orchestrating the incident as part of a broader effort to suppress opposition voices, citing it as evidence of creeping authoritarianism in the country.

The party further linked the controversy to gender-based intimidation, arguing that it underscores ongoing attacks on women’s rights and efforts to silence female representation.

Urging senator Akpabio to address the allegations publicly, the PDP emphasized that senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has already completed her suspension and should be allowed to resume her duties.

“The extreme persecution of six-month suspension unjustly imposed on senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, contrary to the rules of the senate, is more than enough,” Ologunagba said.

The PDP has warned the clerk of the national assembly, Yahaya Danzaria, to retract his letter and uphold neutrality in his role as a bureaucrat.

The party urged him not to allow political interference to compromise the principles of democracy and the rule of law.

The party also called on the international community, democratic institutions, and human rights groups to condemn what it described as a renewed attack on the Kogi central lawmaker.

It further urged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to disregard the letter and prepare to resume her legislative duties without obstruction.

Earlier, the national assembly had stated that senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was not yet permitted to return to the chamber.

In a letter dated, Thursday, September 4, acting clerk Danzaria acknowledged her notice of resumption but asserted that her suspension remains in effect until her appeal against the senate is resolved in court.

“The matter remains sub judice, and until the judicial process is concluded, no administrative action can be taken to facilitate your resumption,” the letter read.

The senate maintained that her six-month suspension, which began on 6 March 2025, would only be reconsidered after the court of appeal delivers its verdict.

Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for insubordination after refusing a reassignment of her designated seat during plenary.

The suspension, recommended by the senate committee on ethics, privileges, and public petitions, also revoked her aides, office privileges, and salaries.

The lawmaker has consistently claimed her suspension stems from a petition in which she accused senate president Akpabio of sexual harassment, a charge the senate dismissed.

She challenged the suspension in court and won a favorable judgment.

Her earlier attempt to return in July ended in a standoff, with security personnel blocking her entry despite a crowd of supporters rallying outside the national assembly.

PoliticsFG Appeals To NUPENG For Suspension Of Nationwide Strike by SJMag1(op): 1:49pm On Sep 08, 2025
The federal government has appealed to the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to suspend its planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday, over a dispute with the Dangote refinery.

The NUPENG has announced that its members will cease work and begin seeking alternative employment from September 8.

The union stated that the decision is in response to the Dangote refinery’s alleged prevention of its Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tanker drivers from joining labor unions.

Although the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) and the Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association (DTCDA) have declared they will not participate in NUPENG’s planned strike, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has announced its own plan to suspend the lifting and dispensing of petroleum products for three days, beginning on September 9, in support of NUPENG.

The NUPENG reiterated its intention to proceed with the strike despite the DTCDA’s announcement.

Addressing the situation in a statement on Sunday, September 7, Muhammad Dingyadi, the minister of labor and employment, warned that the industrial action would cripple the petroleum sector, which is the backbone of the Nigerian economy, and cause hardship for citizens.

Dingyadi announced that he has scheduled a conciliation meeting for Monday with all involved parties and urged NUPENG to suspend its planned strike.

He said, “I have invited all the parties for a conciliation meeting tomorrow, Monday, September 8, 2025.

“Since I have intervened, I plead with NUPENG to rescind their decision to shut down the petroleum sector from tomorrow.

“I also appeal to the NLC to withdraw the red alert it issued to its affiliate unions to be on standby for a nationwide strike in solidarity with NUPENG.

“The petroleum sector is very important to this country. It constitutes the core of the country’s economy.

“A strike in the petroleum sector, even for just a day, will have an adverse consequential impact on the economy.

“It will not only lead to heavy revenue losses by the country, running into billions of Naira, but also cause untold hardship and difficulties for Nigerians.

“Hence, I plead with the unions to give peace a chance. I assure them that this matter will be resolved amicably to the satisfaction of all the parties involved.”

Dingyadi also assured Nigerians that the dispute will be resolved harmoniously to ensure that no disruption occurs in the petroleum sector, which is vital to the Nigerian economy.

PoliticsTinubu Order Security Review, Deployment Of Millitary Hardware Against Terrorist by SJMag1(op): 12:49pm On Sep 08, 2025
President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive review of security operations across the country, with particular emphasis on the deployment of modern military hardware and surveillance systems to dismantle terrorist networks.

Vice president Kashim Shettima, in a statement issued by his spokesman Stanley Nkwocha, conveyed the president’s directive while commiserating with the government and people of Borno state over the recent attack, on Friday night, September 5, in Darajamal community, Bama local government area, which left several civilians and soldiers dead.

Describing the incident as a tragic loss to both Borno state and the nation, the vice president on Monday, September 8, extended heartfelt condolences and reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to intensifying the fight against terrorism.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the people of Borno state, and the Nigerian military over the tragic loss of our compatriots.

“These deaths have left the entire nation in collective grief, but we are confident that justice will be served for the bereaved families.”

Vice president Kashim Shettima voiced confidence in the ability of the Nigerian armed forces to surmount the security challenges confronting Borno state.

He pointed to president Bola Tinubu’s recent approval for the procurement of additional drones and his directive to security agencies to strengthen and reassess their operational strategies.

The vice president also underscored the federal government’s ongoing consideration of state policing, stressing president Tinubu’s view that some security threats require specialized units with knowledge of local terrain and culture, as well as the capacity to operate effectively at the grassroots.

He offered prayers for the families of the victims and assured both the Borno state government and the affected communities of sustained federal support in addressing the crisis.

PoliticsOluremi Tinubu Empower 500 Oyo Female Entrepreneurs With N50,000 Grant Each by SJMag1(op): 10:59am On Sep 02, 2025
The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has provided financial support to 500 women entrepreneurs in Oyo State, giving each of them ₦50,000 to strengthen their businesses.

The support was delivered under her Women Economic Empowerment Programme of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

The beneficiaries received the grants on Monday, September 1, at an event in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Represented by Tamunominini Makinde, wife of the Oyo State Governor, Tinubu explained that the initiative was designed to encourage hardworking women traders and small-scale business owners who are striving daily to care for their families, educate their children, and contribute to community development.

She stressed that the ₦50,000 was not a loan but a grant, ‘a seed of renewed hope’, to help women recapitalise and grow their existing businesses.

“It is my firm belief that when you empower a woman, you empower a household, a community, and indeed, a nation,” Tinubu said.

“I thank the Tony Elumelu Foundation, who donated one billion naira to the Renewed Hope Initiative, to directly support 18,500 women across the nation.

“Five hundred women from each of the 36 states and the FCT will be receiving N50,000 each to strengthen and recapitalise their existing small businesses.

“I thank the Tony Elumelu Foundation once again for this support. May this act of generosity inspire many more across our nation,” she said.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Inclusion, Toyin Balogun, appreciated RHI for the empowerment.

Balogun enjoined the empowered beneficiaries not to see the money as a token for their financial turnaround, but to be used judiciously.

PoliticsTragic Road Accident Claim 6 Lives, Injure 9 In Lagos by SJMag1(op): 10:36am On Sep 02, 2025
A tragic road accident along the Lekki-Epe expressway in Lagos state claimed six lives and left nine others critically injured.

The crash occurred on Monday, September 1, at Ibeju Bus Stop and involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck and a white Mazda commercial bus with registration number AKD 336YD.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the deceased victims included two adult men, three women, and a young boy.

Nine others, three men and six women, sustained varying degrees of injuries, while four passengers miraculously escaped without harm.

Preliminary investigations point to overspeeding, dangerous driving, and route violation as the major causes of the accident.

FRSC operatives swiftly arrived at the scene, rescuing the injured and moving them to nearby hospitals for emergency treatment.

The Lagos tate sector commander, corps commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, extended condolences to the families of the deceased and appealed to motorists to adopt safe driving practices.

He stressed that overspeeding remains one of the leading causes of deadly road crashes and urged drivers to prioritise caution and compliance with traffic regulations.

Although the identities of the victims have not yet been released, the FRSC confirmed that both drivers and passengers were among those affected.

PoliticsNiger Government Orders Closure Of Idps Camp Over Security Risks, Illicit Activi by SJMag1(op): 3:24pm On Aug 29, 2025
The Niger State government has shut down the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Mokwa town, citing security threats and allegations of illicit activities linked to the facility.

The camp, originally built by the Nigerian Red Cross Society as a temporary shelter for victims of the recent Mokwa flash flood, was closed following an expanded security meeting at the council secretariat.

Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Council, Alhaji Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, explained that although the Red Cross had sought approval to establish the camp, the council never granted consent before construction began.

He described the facility as a ‘danger in disguise’ and said the closure was a proactive measure to protect the community.

According to him, several residents had complained that many occupants of the camp were not genuine victims of the May 29, 2025 flood disaster, which claimed lives and destroyed property worth billions of naira.

He added that official notices were sent to other organisations operating at the site, giving them 24 hours to vacate, while traditional leaders, security agencies, and the state governor were also informed.

Muregi said the decision was made to safeguard lives and livelihoods across Mokwa.

The meeting was attended by traditional leaders, including the Ndalile of Mokwa, Alhaji Muhammed Shaba, the Etsuyamkpa of Ndayako, and the Sarkin Hausawa of Mokwa, Malam Tanko Bala, alongside council officials and security chiefs.

The closure and demolition exercise were supervised by ACP Godwin Ihean, Area Commander of the Nigeria Police, New Bussa Area Command.

Speaking at the meeting, the Ndalile of Mokwa, Alhaji Shaba, disclosed that more than 85 per cent of the flood victims had already received compensation from the state government, noting that unresolved cases were largely due to bank account discrepancies.

A local resident, Malam Musa Sheshi, welcomed the closure of the camp, describing it as a relief for the community.

“The camp is very close to our house, and the aim of the camp by Red Cross was to help flood victims, but that has not been the case,” Sheshi said.

Sheshi claimed that most of those accommodated in the camp were not genuine flood victims.

According to him, the facility often appeared deserted during the day but became crowded at night with unfamiliar individuals of different backgrounds.

He expressed concern that the camp might serve as a potential hideout for bandits, warning that its presence posed a security risk to the community.

Another resident, Yusuf Isah, stated that the camp was also being misused by some men and women for immoral activities.

“Some men used to come and collect this place to bring women in the night and sleep and go in the morning. You won’t see anybody in the afternoon,” Isah said.

PoliticsNNPCL, NEITI Sign Mou On Data Reporting, Transparency In Nigeria’s Oil Gas Secto by SJMag1(op): 3:01pm On Aug 29, 2025
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen data release, reporting, and transparency in the oil and gas sector.

The management team of NEITI, led by its Executive Secretary, Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, and NNPCL’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Bayo Ojulari, have both reaffirmed the company’s commitment to releasing monthly reports on key operational data.

Ojulari said the new management of NNPCL is implementing reforms aimed at fulfilling President Bola Tinubu’s directive to boost Nigeria’s oil production to three million barrels per day by 2030.

He acknowledged that the reforms have faced resistance but assured that the company is working to overcome these challenges.

Ojulari stated, “Even before meeting with you, you may have noticed that we reinstated the monthly report. We are improving month by month, and to ensure accuracy, we have started reviewing a number of internal processes and frameworks in our reporting structure.

“We are also keen on formalising this partnership with NEITI through an MoU. We understand that similar agreements have been signed in the past, but the significance now is that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has transformed NNPC into a limited liability company, with a clear mandate to work towards public listing.

“That journey is easier said than done. It is a major undertaking that requires the support of all stakeholders, particularly NEITI, to guide us through.”

The executive secretary of NEITI Orji Ogbonnaya Orji, emphasised the importance of NNPCL keeping to its commitment on data disclosure and contract transparency.

He expressed NEITI’s readiness to formalise the collaboration, stressing that the MoU would strengthen cooperation and enhance Nigeria’s standing in the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).

He also raised concerns over the suspension of NNPC’s monthly reports after the enactment of the PIA, noting that consistency in disclosure is critical to credibility.

Orji added, “Individuals will come and go, but NNPC Limited must endure as a global energy giant. The NNPC we dream of is one that competes shoulder-to-shoulder with Saudi Aramco, QatarEnergy, Petronas, and other global players.

“To achieve this, NNPC Limited must urgently address domestic challenges through a multi-stakeholder consultative approach, as failure to do so carries risks for Nigeria’s image and investor confidence. NEITI stands ready to facilitate such engagements when needed.”

Politics2027 Presidential Race Open To Members Despite Endorsement Of Tinubu For Second by SJMag1(op): 4:29pm On Aug 28, 2025
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has affirmed that its members will still be free to vie for the presidency in 2027, despite the party’s endorsement of President Bola Tinubu for a second term.

Speaking on Wednesday, August 27, at an interactive session at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, APC National Organising Secretary Sulaiman Argungu explained that the backing of Tinubu by the party leadership, including the National Working Committee (NWC), the Progressive Governors Forum led by Hope Uzodinma, and the National Assembly leadership under Godswill Akpabio, reflects recognition of the president’s achievements.

Argungu emphasized, however, that the endorsement will not prevent other party members from contesting in the presidential primaries.

“We will definitely not close our doors (other presidential aspirants). When the time comes, our timetable will be made known,” Argungu said.

“Anybody who wants to aspire for the presidency under the APC will not be denied the opportunity to purchase the expression of interest and nomination forms to exercise their franchise.

“We never said we had locked the door. We are only telling people that we appreciate what the president is doing for the people of the country and that he deserves a second term in office when we roundly endorsed him recently.”

The APC’s National Organising Secretary, Sulaiman Argungu, highlighted a key difference between his party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that in 2014 the PDP issued only a single presidential nomination form for Goodluck Jonathan, effectively making him the sole aspirant.

Reflecting on the party’s performance in recent by-elections, Argungu said that winning 13 of the 16 seats contested demonstrates the strong trust Nigerians place in the APC.
