PoliticsI’ve Been Working With FG To Resolve Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Challenges – Orji Kalu by SJMag1(op): 1:04pm On Nov 24, 2025
Former Abia state governor and lawmaker representing Abia north, senator Orji Kalu, has revealed that he has been working closely with the federal government to resolve the legal challenges facing the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Kalu made the remarks on Sunday, November 23, while reacting to Kanu’s recent conviction by the federal high court, Abuja, on terrorism-related offences.

He said he has been engaging the federal government regarding the IPOB leader’s situation.

“The problem of Nnamdi Kanu is one that needs to be solved through a political process,” Kalu said.

“I have been working with the federal government of Nigeria on how to address this issue, and nobody should question the decision of justice Omotosho.”

Kalu explained that while Kanu’s legal team would approach the court of appeal to challenge the federal high court ruling, he intends to contact the attorney general, Lateef Fagbemi, to advise the president on the matter.

He lamented that several people lost their jobs and livelihoods due to the activities of IPOB in the south-east and noted that dozens of Igbo citizens have been killed in the region as a result of the group’s actions.

The senator also recalled his efforts in April 2017, when he applied pressure on then-president Muhammadu Buhari to facilitate Kanu’s release from detention.

He acknowledged the roles of Mamman Daura and then-attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, in securing Kanu’s release to face trial.

“I know the pressure I personally put on president Buhari before Kanu was released in April 2017. Nobody is talking about the Igbo who were killed,” Kalu added.

Kanu’s case had lingered in court since 2015.

On Thursday, November 20, justice James Omotosho sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on counts one, four, five, and six, instead of imposing the death penalty.

The judge also sentenced the IPOB leader to 20 years in prison on count three and five years on count seven, with no option of a fine.

While delivering judgment, justice Omotosho said the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The evidence showed that Kanu had ordered a sit-at-home directive in the south-east and committed acts of terrorism by making broadcasts threatening death and disruption.

PoliticsAudit Report Indict NNPCL Over N684m Questionable Expenditure On Procurements, A by SJMag1(op): 3:38pm On Nov 21, 2025
A new report by the office of the auditor general of the federation has indicted the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for questionable expenditures amounting to about ₦684 million on abandoned projects and irregular procurements.

The revelations are contained in the Auditor-General’s 2022 annual report an 808-page document recently submitted to the national assembly in line with constitutional requirements.

The audit outlines serious weaknesses within NNPCL’s financial management systems, highlighting opaque transactions, weak internal controls, and potential diversion of public funds by the state owned oil company.

According to the report, the company made several payments without evidence of project execution, irregularly renewed contracts, and failed to comply with financial regulations established to protect public resources.

In a number of cases, auditors found no proof of work done despite contractors receiving full payment.

The report further states that the payments breached Financial Regulations (FR) 3104 and 3106 (2009), which mandate the recovery of mobilisation fees from non-performing contractors and their referral to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The regulations also impose sanctions where contractors present false certificates of completion.

One of the most severe infractions involves a ₦533 million contract awarded in May 2020 for the construction of an Accident and Emergency Facility along Airport Road, Abuja.

Although ₦292 million covering the first three project milestones was released by September 2020, auditors visiting the site in December 2022 found it abandoned.

None of the planned components, including medical wards, a mortuary, physiotherapy unit, or external works, had been executed.

Auditors blamed the failure on ineffective internal controls and warned that such lapses expose government funds to significant risk.

NNPCL responded by requesting the SAP payment number for verification, but auditors dismissed the response as inadequate.

They directed the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) to recover and remit the ₦292 million to the treasury and provide evidence to the National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committees (PAC).

The GCEO at the time was Mele Kyari, who has since been replaced by Bayo Ojulari.

Another flagged contract involved ₦246 million paid for the supply of 2,400 metres of carbon steel pipes to the Warri refinery and petrochemical company.

Despite full payment, only 1,908 metres had been delivered by the time of the audit.

The company attributed the delays to COVID-19-related supply disruptions, but auditors deemed the justification unsatisfactory.

A separate ₦152 million payment reportedly made at the request of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) was also flagged.

Auditors found no supporting documents detailing the procurement or its completion, describing the transaction as irregular and in violation of a 2008 Establishment Circular that bars MDAs from soliciting or accepting financial support from subordinate agencies.

Overall, the auditor general concluded that NNPCL’s weak internal control environment has led to possible financial losses, unexecuted contracts, and diversion of public funds.

The report calls for urgent reforms to ensure compliance with financial regulations and safeguard national resources.

In recent years, NNPCL has been widely criticised for a lack of transparency, having failed to publish audited accounts for 43 years until 2020.

Meanwhile, the EFCC is currently investigating 14 NNPCL officials including two former CEOs, Mele Kyari and Abubakar Yar’Adua over an alleged $2.7 billion refinery rehabilitation scandal.

The senate committee on public accounts is also probing an alleged ₦210 trillion discrepancy in the company’s audited financial statements between 2017 and 2023.

PoliticsLagos Court Reverses Mareva Injunction In $1.01bn Debt Recovery Suit Against Nes by SJMag1(op): 3:13pm On Nov 21, 2025
The federal high court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Daniel Osiagor, has reversed a Mareva injunction in a $1.01 billion debt recovery suit brought against Nestoil Limited by FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited.

The ruling followed a petition of bias filed by Nestoil’s chairman, Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi, against the initial judge, Justice Deinde Dipeolu.

This led to the suspension of proceedings and the reassignment of the case to Justice Osiagor.

At Thursday’s resumed hearing, the plaintiffs’ counsel, Babajide Koku, requested a halt to proceedings pending a Court of Appeal decision on the November 7, recusal of Justice Dipeolu.

However, Nestoil’s counsel, Muiz Banire, argued that filing a Notice of Appeal does not automatically stop court proceedings, citing relevant federal high court procedural rules.

Wole Olanipekun, representing Neconde Energy Limited, emphasized that the chief judge has statutory authority to transfer cases at any stage, and such transfers cannot be appealed.

Osiagor ruled that the ex parte Mareva injunction had expired 14 days after a motion to set it aside was filed, and that the case transfer was not subject to appeal.

He declared that there was no longer a subsisting order, making prior arguments moot.

The matter was adjourned to November 25, for a motion for joinder, and to December 12, for the hearing of pending applications.

The dispute began with a Mareva injunction issued on October 22, by Justice Dipeolu, which froze Nestoil’s assets, bank accounts, and shares across over 20 Nigerian financial institutions.

The order was obtained by FBNQuest Merchant Bank Limited and First Trustees Limited over an alleged $1.01 billion and ₦430 billion debt owed by Nestoil, its affiliate Neconde Energy Limited, and their promoters, Ernest and Nnenna Azudialu Obiejesi.

Dipeolu had appointed Abubakar Sulu-Gambari, as receiver manager with authority to take possession of Nestoil’s head office in Lagos and other properties, with the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Navy, and State Security Service assisting in enforcement. Armed police had reportedly sealed Nestoil’s headquarters in late October.

Nestoil subsequently filed an application at the federal high court, Abuja, seeking to set aside the Lagos Mareva order and halt enforcement actions by the receiver manager.

PoliticsNiger Govt Accuse School Management Of Unauthorized Resumption Following Abducti by SJMag1(op): 2:06pm On Nov 21, 2025
Niger state government has accused the management of St. Mary’s Private Catholic Secondary School, Agwara local government area, of resuming activities without authorization despite prior security directives, following the recent abduction of an unknown number of students and teachers by terrorists.

The secretary to the state government, Abubakar Usman, in a statement on Friday, said the government had received credible intelligence indicating heightened threats in the region, prompting an order for the temporary closure of all boarding schools in the area.

“We had credible security alerts and directed all boarding schools in the zone to close.

“St Mary’s school went ahead to reopen and resume activities without notifying the government or seeking clearance,” Usman said.

He confirmed that full-scale investigations and search-and-rescue operations have commenced adding that the exact number of pupils abducted remains unknown as security agencies continue their assessments.

The government urged school operators and community leaders to strictly adhere to official advisories as the protection of lives, especially those of children, remains the priority.

PoliticsHouse Of Reps Order Alake, Cadastre Boss To Appear In Illegal Mining Probe by SJMag1(op): 8:39am On Nov 21, 2025
The House of Representatives Committee on Mineral Exploitation, Security and Anti-Money Laundering has issued a summons to Dele Alake, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, directing him to appear before its investigative panel over ongoing inquiries into illegal mining across the country.

Obadiah Nkom, director-general of the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, was also summoned.

The directive was announced on Thursday in Abuja by Sanni Abdulraheem, chairman of the committee, during a resumed interactive session with ministries, departments and agencies. Abdulraheem said the two key institutions at the centre of the probe had not demonstrated the level of cooperation expected from them.

“In spite of the friendly approach to some MDAs, particularly the two government organisations that are central to this exercise, the ministry of solid minerals and the Nigeria Mining Cadastre Office, didn’t give much desired willingness to receive the committee,” he said.

He added that the committee had now instructed its secretariat to formally notify the minister and director-general to appear on the dates assigned to each institution, preferably alongside representatives of the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies.

“However, the committee has directed the secretariat to write the minister and DG of Nigeria Mining Cadastre to appear before the committee on scheduled dates for each of the two organisations, if possible, with EFCC and other anti-graft agencies.”

Abdulraheem explained that the House mandated the panel to undertake a detailed investigation into the scale, actors and trends driving illegal mineral exploitation nationwide. The committee is expected to uncover the root causes, consequences and the extent of revenue losses linked to the illicit trade.

He said the investigation would also assess how security agencies deployed to mineral-rich regions — such as the NSCDC, mining marshals and other formations—carry out their duties, including their operational capacity to secure mining locations and safeguard national assets.

Beyond security lapses, the committee will explore the broader risks associated with illegal mining, including links to organised crime, communal clashes, environmental damage and threats to national stability. It will also review the legal and regulatory structure governing mineral exploitation, identifying shortcomings, overlaps and areas of weak enforcement.

Another critical component of the probe involves tracing the flow of funds generated from illegal mineral activities. The committee aims to determine how proceeds are moved, concealed or laundered, as well as the networks and individuals that facilitate such transactions. Abdulraheem noted that the findings would help design strategies to block revenue leakages and improve transparency across the minerals value chain.

He emphasised that the committee will conduct public hearings and engage stakeholders nationwide to gather evidence, enhance transparency and build consensus around solutions to the security and financial challenges posed by illegal mining.

The panel is expected to submit a comprehensive report to the House within the mandated timeline, containing its findings, conclusions and recommended legislative, administrative and security measures.

PoliticsGovernor Alia Dismiss Claims Of Christian Genocide In Benue As Misleading by SJMag1(op): 3:30pm On Nov 20, 2025
Benue state governor, Reverend Hyacinth Alia, has dismissed reports claiming there is an ongoing Christian genocide in the state, insisting such narratives are inaccurate and misleading.

Speaking at a public function on Wednesday, November 19, the governor, who is a Catholic priest, stressed that his commitment to truth is rooted in his calling and moral duty.

“I am a Reverend Father, so being in governance does not take that away from me. I am still a Reverend Father. I came in as a governor as a Reverend Father. I am working with the fear of God and the compassion of Christianity and humanity, and at the end of the day, I am still going back to the church as a Reverend Father and a Christian,” Alia said.

Addressing the claims directly, Alia maintained that Benue state is not witnessing any form of religious, ethnic, racial, national, or state genocide.

“In my state of Benue, we do not have any religious, ethnic, racial, national, or state genocide. We don’t have that. Do we have a number of insecurities in the state? Yes, we do, but it is not a genocide,” he added.

Governor Alia explained that the state’s troubles did not begin today, noting that what is being witnessed is an escalation of decades-old farmer-related conflicts. “Yes, we have lost a number of people, and we have provided background on the challenges that date back many years,” he added.

He maintained that although Benue remains affected by insecurity, it is not a targeted attack on Christians or any particular group.

The governor called for calm, insisting that what the state needs is continued intervention, not sensational labels.

Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring peace, strengthening security operations, and protecting communities across Benue.

PoliticsNasarawa Police Arrest Man For Organ Trafficking, Rescue 4 Victims by SJMag1(op): 1:37pm On Nov 19, 2025
The Nasarawa state police command has arrested a 40 year old man, Maro Ebojoh, for his involvement in organ trafficking, rescuing four victims in the process.

The disclosure was made by the state commissioner of police, Shetima Mohammed, during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Lafia on Tuesday.

According to Mohammed, the suspect was intercepted at Alhaji Yahaya Sabo motor park, Bukan Sidi, Lafia, after motor park officials received a distress call reporting his suspicious activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that on Friday, November 14, 2025, Ebojoh, a native of Ogbara inland area, Delta state, arrived in Lafia to source potential organ donors for immediate kidney transplants.

He lured victims with promises of ₦2,000,000 per donor.

The identified victims were Umar Ahmadu Barau (25), Suleiman Alhaji-Garba (20), Williams Dadung (32), and Stanley Ezekiel (27).

“The suspect took all the victims to a hospital for medical evaluation.

“One of the victims, having passed the initial screening, was moved to Abuja for the transplant, but the procedure could not hold due to issues related to blood pressure.

“The victim was subsequently lodged in a hotel to stabilize.

“Operatives of the command swiftly moved to Abuja and rescued the victim unhurt,” Mohammed said.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that he had received an advance of ₦500,000 out of the agreed ₦6.5 million, and admitted to previously procuring another donor for financial gain.

The commissioner cautioned the public to remain vigilant against individuals posing as organ donor facilitators but engaging in organ harvesting for profit.

PoliticsKano Govt Recruit 1600 Watchmen To Reinforce Security In Public Schools by SJMag1(op): 10:21am On Nov 19, 2025

Politics‘not Enough,’ ECOWAS Calls For Review Of 4-year Presidential Tenure In West Afri by SJMag1(op): 10:15am On Nov 18, 2025
The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, has called for a re-evaluation of the standard four-year presidential tenure across West Africa, arguing that the period is inadequate for real development or democratic strengthening.

Musah made the appeal on Monday in Abuja during the signing of the Regional Partnership for Democracy Programme, launched in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme and the Federal Government.

Representing ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, he stressed that short presidential terms hamper continuity and long-term planning in governance.

Using Nigeria and Ghana as examples, the commissioner noted that four years is scarcely enough for a president to initiate, implement, and consolidate major developmental programmes. He urged regional leaders to place tenure reform firmly on the agenda of West Africa’s political discourse.

Musah painted a grim picture of democratic decline in the region, citing unconstitutional changes of government, compromised judiciaries, and the systematic exclusion of opposition parties. He warned that public confidence is eroding as the social contract weakens, with democracy in many countries failing to deliver basic infrastructure, social protection, and security.

He also highlighted a spike in military coups, as well as attempts by incumbents to cling to power unlawfully. Global uncertainties, terrorism, violent extremism, and the growing influence of AI-powered misinformation further complicate the region’s challenges, he said.

Despite these pressures, Musah insisted that regime protection cannot replace genuine democratic governance and development. He cautioned that focusing solely on security without addressing structural issues would lead to eventual collapse.

He called on the UNDP to prioritise reforms in political party structures, governance practices, and public debate surrounding the region’s liberal democratic model.

The discussion comes amid broader scrutiny of term limits in West Africa. In November 2025, Benin’s parliament approved constitutional changes extending presidential and legislative terms from five to seven years, while retaining a two-term cap. By contrast, in 2024, Nigeria’s House of Representatives rejected a bill seeking a single six-year presidential tenure.

PoliticsTinubu Sends Emissary To Plateau For Peace, Community Harmony by SJMag1(op): 1:56pm On Nov 17, 2025
In a bid to restore peace and foster intercommunal harmony in Plateau state, president Bola Tinubu dispatched an emissary, Dr Abiodun Essiet, to the state on Thursday, November 13.

Essiet, who serves as the senior special assistant on community engagement for the north central zone, spent two days meeting with key stakeholders, including Christian leaders and Fulani Miyetti Allah representatives.

Her engagements culminated in a town hall meeting in Jos, where delegates from various LGAs, traditional rulers, women, and youth groups discussed how to reinforce community-driven peace structures and promote coexistence.

During her visit to Barkin Ladi, Essiet met with Reverend Ezekiel Dachomo, chairman of the Regional Church Council (RCC), to discuss the role of faith-based leadership in fostering unity and social development.

She also addressed a group of widows and delivered president Tinubu’s message of ethnic reconciliation, acknowledging Dachomo’s longstanding advocacy for Christian communities in the state.

Essiet later held discussions with Fulani leaders in Barkin Ladi, focusing on improving dialogue between herders and farmers and reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to inclusive engagement.

She also facilitated a workshop in Jos on establishing community peace structures across the 17 local government areas.

In a separate closed-door session, Essiet met with representatives of the Irigwe community, the Miyetti Allah group, and the youth council of Bassa LGA to explore ways of sustaining peace and strengthening the work of the 17-member peace committee dedicated to reconciliation and coexistence.

She emphasized president Tinubu’s commitment to peace and inclusive governance, noting that community-based peace initiatives remain crucial to grassroots stability in the north central region.

One of the immediate outcomes of her engagements was the resolution of a dispute between David Toma, owner of Agha farm in Gyel district of Jos south, and some herdsmen, after two cows were seized following damage to his farmland.

PoliticsNaval Officer, A.M. Yarima Escapes Assassination Attempt Following Confrontation by SJMag1(op): 10:53am On Nov 17, 2025
A young Nigerian Navy officer, Lt. A.M. Yarima, who recently made headlines after a confrontation with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, was the target of an assassination attempt on Sunday evening.

Military insiders disclosed that Yarima was tailed by unidentified men dressed in black and travelling in two unmarked Hilux vans without number plates. The vehicles allegedly shadowed him from the NIPCO Filling Station off the Line Expressway to Gado Nasco Way.

According to a source, the officer detected he was being followed and carried out a strategic maneuver, enabling him to successfully elude the suspected attackers. The incident was said to have taken place around 6:30 p.m.

The source further stated that the case is currently under investigation and is being handled with the seriousness it deserves, while withholding additional details to avoid jeopardising ongoing efforts.

This latest development comes only days after Lt. Yarima, while performing his duties alongside other security operatives, was involved in a tense confrontation with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over a disputed land site in Gaduwa District.

The encounter, recorded on video, ignited widespread national debate and prompted intervention from the Presidency, which ordered a halt to the demolition activity at the scene.

In the aftermath of the confrontation, military veterans across the country condemned Wike for verbally assaulting the officer and rejected any suggestion of disciplinary measures against Yarima.

Speaking for the Coalition of Retired Veterans, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts warned that ex-service members would occupy the office and residence of the FCT Minister if any punitive action was taken.

He stressed that members of the armed forces pledge loyalty to the nation, not to individual officeholders, and called on Wike to apologise for his conduct.

“How can a public office holder call an officer ‘a fool’ on camera?” he asked, stressing that such behaviour erodes respect for national institutions and devalues the dignity of public office.

Minister of Defence Mohammad Badaru Abubakar has since reassured the public that no military officer acting within the law will be sanctioned over the episode.

“We will always protect officers and our armed forces personnel on lawful duty,” he said during a ministerial briefing for the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day commemorations at the National Defence College.

“Any officer on lawful duty will be protected if he is doing his job lawfully and doing it well.”

Veterans had earlier declared their readiness to mobilise and occupy the FCT Ministry should Lt. Yarima face any form of disciplinary action.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Uba Sani, has unveiled a proposed N985.9 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

The presentation was made during a statewide town hall meeting designed to gather public input and strengthen citizen participation in governance.

During the event, Governor Sani emphasized the administration’s ongoing pursuit of transparency and accountability. In a message shared on his verified Facebook page, he stated:

“In reaffirming our commitment to transparent, accountable, and people-centered governance, we convened a Special Town Hall Meeting to deliberate on the Proposed 2026 Multi-Year Budget of N985.9 billion, a strategic fiscal blueprint comprising N699.7 billion (71 per cent) in capital expenditure and N286.2 billion (29 per cent) in recurrent spending.

“This was not merely a statutory exercise; it was a democratic forum rooted in the belief that public finance must reflect public consensus and collective aspiration.”

The governor noted that the town hall meeting attracted diverse voices from across Kaduna’s civic landscape. According to him:

“The conversations were intellectually rich and deeply constructive. Representatives of civil society, traditional institutions, the Elders Council, faith leaders, youth groups, persons with disabilities, the private sector, and grassroots actors engaged with uncommon candor and analytical depth.

“Their commendations on the strong performance of the 2025 Budget underscored the visible impact of our interventions, while their recommendations affirmed the maturity of Kaduna’s civic ecosystem.

Together with our citizens, we are shaping a Kaduna State defined not only by progress, but by shared purpose and collective ownership of our development journey.”

PoliticsGov Okpebholo Sacks 2 Edo Traditional Rulers by SJMag1(op): 1:10pm On Nov 14, 2025
The Edo State Government has withdrawn the recognition of Zaiki Luckman Odamah III and Bamidele Obaitan as traditional rulers of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan and Ososo Kingdom in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area, respectively.

The decision was announced by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor, in a statement released on Thursday in Benin City.

Ikhilor explained that the revocation followed a comprehensive review of ongoing disputes surrounding traditional leadership in both communities. The government, he said, acted to preserve peace, stability, and adherence to due process.

To fill the temporary leadership vacuum, the state appointed Nicholas Odamah as regent of the Ikpeshi/Egbigere Clan. He is to oversee clan affairs in a caretaker capacity until a legitimate ruler is determined.

Meanwhile, elders of the four quarters and the Council of Chiefs in Ososo Kingdom have been directed to convene and recommend a consensus candidate for appointment to the vacant stool. This process, to be coordinated through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, must align with the customs and rotation principles of the Ososo people.

The statement further instructed the deposed rulers, Odamah III and Obaitan, to immediately surrender all government property, symbols of office, and official documents in their possession to the Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government Council.

Citizens in the affected communities were advised to remain calm, as security agencies have been mobilized to maintain peace and protect lives and property.

The development comes amid long-standing disputes involving the deposed Ikpeshi/Egbigere ruler, Zaiki Luckman Odamah III, who in September petitioned the Edo State House of Assembly to oppose the confirmation of Prof. Roland Otaru as a commissioner.

Odamah alleged that Otaru had consistently opposed his ascension to the throne since his father’s death in 2011, including representing opposing parties in multiple court cases up to the Supreme Court. He warned that Otaru’s inclusion in the State Executive Council would create a conflict of interest.

This latest action follows an earlier decision by Governor Okpebholo in April to remove three other traditional rulers in Edo North — Alhaji Umoru Inusa Umoru of South Ibie, Engr Lukman Akemokue of Okpella, and Dr George Oshiapi Egabor of Uwano Kingdom — over succession irregularities and alleged involvement in insecurity.

Their replacements were appointed based on recommendations from traditional kingmakers.

“Mr Speaker, Bayelsans elected us to take bold actions to improve their quality of life. That is what we are doing and will continue to do. I trust that when history reviews our actions and this budget, our choices will be seen as the right ones,” Diri stated.

The governor urged lawmakers to give the budget accelerated consideration to ensure timely implementation of projects across all eight local government areas.

PoliticsTinubu Urges NDC Course 33 Graduates To Drive Nigeria’s Industrialization, Natio by SJMag1(op): 11:12am On Nov 14, 2025
President Bola Tinubu on Thursday reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to harnessing Nigeria’s human, material, and intellectual resources to promote industrialisation, peace, and prosperity.

He made the remarks at the Council Chambers in Abuja while receiving members of Course 33 of the National Defence College, NDC.

The President encouraged participants to see themselves as agents of positive national development and commended their dedication throughout the programme.

President Tinubu highlighted his administration’s pledge to provide platforms for inclusive solutions to emerging socio-economic challenges. He also stressed the importance of strengthening the nation’s defence and military institutions to cultivate well-trained officers capable of enhancing national power in the defence and security environment.

“I congratulate all of you, the leadership of the college, the participants and resource persons. We are building a political, economic and security future here. We must develop Nigeria. The strategic path to industrialisation, as enumerated in your presentation, gives credence to that,” he stated.

The President reviewed the research paper presented by the participants titled, ‘Harnessing Indigenous Manufacturing for Enhanced National Security by Year 2040’, assuring that the administration would carefully study its recommendations and urging participants to remain committed to intellectual analysis of the nation’s challenges.

“I have listened attentively to your presentation. We must develop future strategic leaders sufficiently equipped with the requisite knowledge and analytical skills necessary to enhance the instrument of national power in a dynamic defence and security environment.

“It is our joint responsibility to ensure that this nation, Nigeria, is productive, it is governed inclusively, and takes care of the future of our generation yet unborn.

“It is our patriotic duty to look further into the horizon, to be determined and be resilient, to invoke our spirit that can achieve greatness, to train our people, develop our economy, promote industrial development, and ensure that sovereignty is assured, protected, and will remain resilient.

“We challenge our intellectual curiosity by being highly inquisitive and looking at what other nations are doing, where we are today, how we got here, and where we are headed tomorrow,” the President further stated.

President Tinubu also assured the management of the College to be patient regarding the full development of the college’s permanent site, a project initiated in 2010.

Rear Admiral A. Ahmed, Commandant of the College, informed the President that NDC, established in 1992, is Nigeria’s highest professional military educational institution. He also noted that the theme of Course 33 was “Strengthening Institutions for National Security and Development in Nigeria.”

The course had 99 participants, comprising 25 Army officers, 16 Navy officers, 12 Air Force officers, five Police officers, 18 participants from various MDAs, and 23 international participants from Africa, Asia, and South America. The College has graduated 3,097 participants to date.

Captain M.A. Ahmed, leader of the Course 33 research team, said their study aligned with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in economic diversification through industrialisation, digitalisation, creativity, and manufacturing. He explained that study teams visited 23 countries worldwide to research indigenous manufacturing and draw lessons for Nigeria’s economic and industrial development.

“Notably, Qatar had a mono-economy in which oil and gas accounted for about 90 percent of exports and about 51 percent of the GDP, which was similar to the situation in Nigeria as of 2007. The Qatari government enacted several strategic interventions, and our team drew lessons from the infrastructure. The government of Qatar invested over $300 billion between 2011 and 2022,” Captain Ahmed stated.

The team commended the Tinubu administration’s economic achievements, noting that only two countries have higher projected GDP growth than Nigeria in 2026. They recommended massive investment in infrastructure, product standardisation, and support for the nation’s military industry complex, the Defence Industrial Corporation of Nigeria, DICON, as well as initiatives to create employment and drive backward integration.

The presentation concluded with a call for presidential directives to implement Project Native 2040, emphasizing that visionary leadership and strategic execution would allow Nigeria to harness indigenous manufacturing for national security and development by 2040.

Politics‘suspend National Convention, Set Up Committee To Oversee Party Affairs,’ Saraki by SJMag1(op): 3:13pm On Nov 13, 2025
Former senate president Bukola Saraki has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend its planned national convention and instead establish national caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs and spearhead reconciliation efforts aimed at revitalizing the party.

Saraki warned that proceeding with the convention under the current circumstances could deepen the party’s internal crisis and expose its outcomes to legal challenges.

In a statement shared on his verified X handle on Wednesday, November 12, the former Kwara governor said holding the elective convention at this time would not serve the best interests of the party or its members nationwide.

He noted that he had conveyed his position to the reconciliation team set up by the senator Adolphus Wabara-led Board of Trustees (BoT), emphasizing the need for dialogue and compromise.

Saraki expressed regret that despite the selfless efforts of patriotic party members, the planned convention has become entangled in political and legal controversies.

He added that political disputes are rarely resolved in court and stressed the importance of unity and careful deliberation to restore the party’s credibility.

“On 12 November 2025, I had the pleasure to receive members of the BOT Reconciliation Team of our great party, the PDP, led by Wakili Adamawa, Amb. Hassan Adamu. They requested for a meeting in order to seek my opinion on the possible ways of restoring peace within the party, ” Saraki said.

“It was a meaningful and incisive meeting during which matters of great importance affecting our party were discussed. We deliberated extensively on issues relating to the national convention scheduled for November 15 and 16, in Ibadan.

“In summary, I expressed deep regret that, despite the selfless and arduous efforts by some of us, the convention has become mired in extensive controversy, both political and legal. This does not bode well for not only our party, but for Nigeria’s democracy in general.

“I made it clear to the BoT team that political matters can hardly be resolved through the courts. Affairs of political parties are best resolved amicably with all sides seated round the table. Legal battles will only continue to cause friction.

“As it stands, the fact is that there are conflicting court orders in relation to the validity of the scheduled convention. As a result, there is no assurance as to whether the conduct and outcome of the convention will stand.

“As a leader, on whose shoulder lies the political weight of the yearnings and aspiration of my people, I cannot in all good conscience take or be part of any action that will jeopardise their aspirations

“My advice to the BoT team is that the only solution available to us now is for the party to set up a caretaker committee to steer the affairs of the party for the time being. This must be done in the next two days.

“This is the path to true reconciliation and stability of the Party. It is also the best way to give confidence to our members who intend to contest elections on the PDP platform. In the present circumstance, no serious politician with electoral ambition will seek to contest on the platform of the PDP, not knowing whether his or her nomination will be valid or declared null and void.

“It is clear that going ahead with the national convention in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, will only serve to further fuel the present crisis. Therefore, going ahead with the convention as scheduled is a waste of efforts, It does not have my support. It’s not too late to find a win-win solution,” he added.

PoliticsFG Suspend Proposed Implementation Of 15 Percent Import Duty On Petrol, Diesel by SJMag1(op): 2:36pm On Nov 13, 2025
The federal government has suspended the proposed implementation of a 15 per cent ad valorem import duty on premium motor spirit (petrol) and automotive gas oil (diesel).

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, November 13, via its official X handle and signed by its director of public affairs, George Ene-Ita.

“It should also be noted that the implementation of the 15 per cent ad valorem import duty on imported premium motor spirit (Petrol) and diesel is no longer in view,” the statement read.

The decision follows reports that president Bola Tinubu had earlier approved the introduction of the 15 per cent duty on petrol and diesel imports into Nigeria.

Reassuring the public of sufficient petroleum supply across the country, NMDPRA said there was no need for panic buying or hoarding of products.

“There is a robust domestic supply of petroleum products (AGO, PMS, LPG, etc.) sourced from both local refineries and importation to ensure timely replenishment of stocks at storage depots and retail stations during this period,” NMDPRA stated.

It added that the agency would continue to monitor the supply and distribution network to prevent disruptions, especially during the peak demand period.

The NMDPRA further urged marketers and consumers to maintain market stability and avoid unnecessary price increases, assuring that it remains committed to ensuring energy security and a steady supply of petroleum products nationwide.

Politics$50bn Refinery Deal Set To Make Ondo Home To Africa’s 2nd-largest Oil Plant by SJMag1(op): 5:14pm On Nov 10, 2025
An international energy consortium has finalized a landmark $50 billion investment deal to build what will become Africa’s second-largest oil refinery in Ondo State, Nigeria.

This move is expected to greatly enhance the continent’s refining capacity and reduce dependence on imported fuels.

The project, valued at over $50 billion, will see the construction of a 500,000-barrel-per-day refinery alongside a 1,471-hectare free trade zone, positioning Nigeria as a dominant player in Africa’s oil refining industry.

Until now, Algeria’s Skikda Refinery, with a capacity of about 356,500 barrels per day, held the distinction of being the continent’s second-largest. Once operational, the new Ondo refinery will surpass it, giving Nigeria both the largest and second-largest refining complexes in Africa — alongside the Dangote Refinery in Lagos, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

The ambitious initiative is being led by Backbone Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, BINL, in collaboration with NEFEX Holdings Limited of Canada. It represents one of the most significant private-sector energy investments ever recorded in West Africa.

According to a statement by the company, funding was secured following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, between BINL and the Ondo State Government, facilitated by the Ondo State Investment Promotion Agency, ONDIPA.

Ken Nnamani, chairman of BINL, led a delegation to visit Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, where discussions focused on the project’s potential to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while attracting investment in logistics, storage, and fuel distribution networks.

BINL’s vice president for corporate services, Wale Adekola, noted that the project’s partner, NEFEX Petroline, brings deep operational expertise gained across the Middle East, Europe, and North America, ensuring the refinery meets global standards of efficiency and sustainability.

The refinery will produce refined petroleum products for both domestic consumption and export across Africa, complementing the output from Dangote Refinery and strengthening Nigeria’s position as the continent’s leading energy hub.

Together, the two facilities are expected to refine over 1.1 million barrels of crude oil per day, marking a major milestone in Africa’s drive toward industrial self-reliance.

With the Dangote Refinery planning an expansion to 1.4 million barrels per day, the combined capacity could soon approach 2 million barrels daily, securing Nigeria’s place as a global refining powerhouse.

For decades, African nations have exported crude oil only to import refined products such as petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel — an imbalance that has depleted foreign reserves and exposed economies to global market shocks. Projects like those spearheaded by BINL and Dangote Industries signal a turning point in this long-standing dynamic.

By increasing domestic refining capacity, Africa is steadily moving toward energy self-sufficiency, reducing import costs and creating the foundation for long-term economic stability through refined product exports.

PoliticsAPC Chieftain Seeks All-round Support For Tinubu In Crushing Terrorism Amid US C by SJMag1(op): 10:28am On Nov 10, 2025
Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain in the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Osun State, has urged religious, community, and political leaders across Nigeria to unite behind President Bola Tinubu in tackling terrorism and insecurity in the country.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, made the appeal on Sunday in Osogbo, emphasizing that at this critical juncture, Nigerians must set aside political and religious differences to support the President’s efforts to restore security.

He highlighted that the recent threat by the United States, US, President Donald Trump to deploy military forces to Nigeria over alleged attacks on Christians should concern all Nigerians.

While acknowledging the efforts of President Tinubu and security agencies to curb violent crimes, Oyintiloye stressed that citizens must remain united to defend the nation’s sovereignty.

The APC leader noted that the current security challenges did not originate with Tinubu’s administration but have developed over a prolonged period, encompassing terrorism and banditry. He emphasized that Nigeria has never waged war against any particular religion.

“We must come together and rally behind the President at this period. Our religious or political affiliations are irrelevant at this period; what we need is oneness and unity to protect the sovereignty of our dear country,” he said.

Oyintiloye added that all faiths, including Muslims, Christians, and others, have suffered from the impacts of terrorism, and no single religion has been targeted by the perpetrators of these crimes.

He welcomed US concerns about Nigeria’s security situation, advocating for intelligence sharing and military equipment support, but warned against the deployment of foreign troops, saying it could complicate matters.

The former lawmaker also called on Nigerians, particularly opposition members, to exercise caution in their statements during this sensitive period, noting that security threats affect everyone.

He further urged the newly appointed military chiefs to justify the trust placed in them by the President and to work diligently to eliminate terrorist threats.

“This is not a time to play opposition politics. We must all come to the realization that all our hopes, aspirations, and dreams to get public offices rest squarely on the continued existence of Nigeria. Our current set of leaders will be there for a period of time and move on.

“But Nigerians must not walk into a trap that will make the country cease to exist. With the cooperation of all stakeholders, we have the capacity to end terrorism,” Oyintiloye said.

He concluded that political, religious, and community leaders must remain united in their resolve to protect the nation, stressing what Tinubu needs at this time is the support of all Nigerians.

PoliticsICPC Drags NSCDC Officer To Court Over N1.7m Fraud by SJMag1(op): 10:43am On Nov 08, 2025
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has brought charges against Deputy Superintendent Sani Yakubu, a senior officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, before the Kaduna State High Court. Yakubu faces a three-count charge involving criminal breach of trust and misappropriation of funds.

“Yakubu was brought before Justice Isiaka of High Court 12 on Monday, November 4, 2025, for allegedly diverting ₦1,720,000 belonging to one Mrs Vennica Idoko, money he received on her behalf while acting in his official capacity,” a statement issued on Friday by the ICPC’s spokesperson, Demola Bakare, read.

“According to the charge sheet, the ICPC accused the defendant of dishonestly misappropriating the funds entrusted to him in the course of his duty as a civil defence officer. The offences contravene Sections 294, 300, and 86 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State.

“That you, Deputy Superintendent Sani Yakubu, while serving as an officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, did dishonestly misappropriate the sum of ₦1,720,000.00 belonging to Mrs. Vennica Idoko, being money officially received by you on her behalf, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 294 of the Penal Code Law of Kaduna State.”

During the court proceedings, Yakubu pleaded guilty to all charges, admitting to the misappropriation.

Presiding judge Justice Isiaka adjourned the case until November 12, for judgment and sentencing.

In response to the development, Bakare reiterated the commission’s determination to ensure accountability among public officers. He stressed that the ICPC remains committed to upholding integrity in public service and warned that any official who abuses their position for personal gain would face severe legal consequences.

“This case is a reminder that corruption, in whatever form or amount, undermines public confidence in government institutions and will not be tolerated,” Bakare said.

Earlier in March 2025, the ICPC also arraigned Christiana Goka, a former Deputy Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for allegedly misappropriating public funds totaling ₦5,398,656. Goka, who headed the Department of Research Monitoring Information System at the Directorate of Technical Cooperation in Africa, was arraigned before Justice J.A. Aina of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Kwali, Abuja, on a five-count charge bordering on misappropriation and false statements.

A statement by Bakare revealed that Goka diverted ₦5,164,656 from funds allocated for a proposed management retreat of the ministry in Dutse, Jigawa State, in 2017, which was never held.

PoliticsTinubu Freezes Sale Of FAAN Assets, Approves New Aviation Projects by SJMag1(op): 11:40am On Nov 07, 2025
President Bola Tinubu has issued a directive forbidding the sale or transfer of any properties belonging to the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, that are situated within or around airport premises across the country.

The policy was disclosed on Thursday, November 6, by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, at the State House in Abuja, shortly after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting.

Keyamo explained that the presidential order overrides any previous asset disposal arrangements initiated by past administrations, emphasizing that FAAN’s properties are crucial national assets that must remain under government control.

He noted that maintaining on-site housing for essential aviation staff, such as firefighters and air traffic controllers, is critical for rapid response during emergencies, reinforcing the need to safeguard airport-linked properties.

“These properties will not be handed over to private entities.

“If anyone thinks they’ve acquired one, they should reconsider,” the minister warned.

The minister further revealed that the FEC had approved eight new initiatives designed to strengthen the aviation sector through improved safety, modern technology, enhanced security, and better management practices.

Among the approved projects were maintenance and technical support contracts for Aeronautical Information Management, AIM, systems across Nigeria’s five major international airports — Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.

The Council also endorsed the deployment of advanced Terrestrial Trunked Radio, TETRA, infrastructure and the installation of 14 Very High Frequency, VHF, remote communication systems for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, NAMA, to enhance airspace communication and safety.

To meet International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, standards, approval was granted for the acquisition of 15 specialized airport rescue and firefighting vehicles, to be deployed at the country’s main international airports.

Keyamo also announced that NAMA, which currently leases office space in Abuja, will soon move into a purpose-built headquarters, citing the security risks of operating sensitive command centers within commercial buildings.

Additionally, the FEC approved an economic viability study for the potential concession of Port Harcourt International Airport’s operations. Keyamo disclosed that private sector interest in the concession has grown significantly.

“Prior to our tenure, interest was nonexistent. Today, more than six firms are vying for the opportunity,” he stated, assuring labour unions that no employee would lose their job as a result of the concession process.

Other FEC approvals included the implementation of a National Identification Number, NIN, linked biometric screening system for all passengers to combat identity fraud and strengthen security measures at airports.

“Far too many flyers use bogus IDs. This tech will verify identities in real time,” Keyamo explained.

The Council also ratified the 2024 budget allocations for the installation of modern runway lighting systems at select airports to support 24-hour flight operations and boost airline efficiency.

“Certain airports close at 6 p.m. due to absent lights. These enhancements will extend service to 10 or 11 p.m.,” he noted.

Keyamo appealed to aviation unions to support the government’s reform agenda, reaffirming his commitment to protecting workers’ interests while stressing that labour organisations cannot override executive decisions.

PoliticsEx-wema Bank Manager Bags Only 3-year ‘no Refund’ Jail Term For Stealing N8.56bn by SJMag1(op): 9:58am On Nov 07, 2025
Former Wema Bank Nigeria Plc financial and retail product manager, Samuel Asiegbu, has been sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to hacking into the bank’s system and stealing ₦8.56 billion.

The judgment means Asiegbu will serve three years in custody without the option of a fine before regaining his freedom. The verdict was delivered by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Special Offences Court, Ikeja, who found him guilty after he admitted to the charges.

Asiegbu faced an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy, fraud, and unauthorized access to a computer system, offences which contravene the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

He was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, alongside Hamza Zakaria, Nurudeen Ibrahim, and Alhaji Sulaiman, for allegedly manipulating Wema Bank’s internal systems in January 2025, causing a financial loss exceeding ₦8.5 billion.

When the defendants were first arraigned in June, they all pleaded not guilty. However, Asiegbu later changed his plea to guilty, paving the way for his conviction and sentencing.

Justice Oshodi sentenced him to 10 months and 8 days imprisonment on count three and 1 year and 8 months on count four, with both terms to run concurrently and without the option of a fine. The court struck out counts one and two following the plea change.

The case has been adjourned to November 14, for the continuation of trial against the remaining defendants.

PoliticsAggrieved Contractors, Lawyers, Activists Shut Down NASS Complex Over N3trn Debt by SJMag1(op): 4:49pm On Nov 06, 2025
Activities at the National Assembly complex in Abuja came to a standstill on Wednesday as hundreds of aggrieved local contractors, lawyers, and civil society activists blocked the main entrances in protest over an alleged N3 trillion debt owed by the Federal Government.

The demonstration, which extended from the Assembly gate to the Federal Secretariat axis, crippled vehicular movement and forced lawmakers, staff, and visitors to seek alternative routes. Legislative business was also affected, with plenary and committee sessions delayed.

The protesters, carrying placards and chanting songs, vowed to maintain the blockade for as long as it takes until they receive payment alerts for completed government projects.

Speaking at the protest, the National President of the All Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria, Jackson Nwosu, said the group resorted to street action after exhausting all peaceful avenues.

“We are here because the Federal Government refused to pay contractors, and we have brought the case to the parliament to address our grievances,” he said.

“These things are capital projects that had already been executed, and we have been pushing for payment since 2024. They are owing our association alone over N3 trillion.”

According to Nwosu, the contractors had previously met with several top officials, including those at the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

“We have had meetings with the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Accountant General of the Federation and even met with the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, sometime around September 4. He came in to intervene.

“But we have heard that the problem is from the presidency. Yesterday, a senator came to assure us that our matter will be looked into. So we will continue to block the entrance of the National Assembly until we get our alerts.”

The protest came barely 24 hours after a similar blockade forced the suspension of Tuesday’s plenary session.

In reaction, the House of Representatives convened an emergency closed-door session shortly after its Wednesday sitting began. Discussions reportedly centred on the contractors’ grievances and the potential disruption of parliamentary proceedings.

The session lasted over two hours before lawmakers moved to Room 028 for further deliberations. As of mid-afternoon, no official statement had been issued.

The protesters, who claim to be owed for projects executed under the 2025 fiscal capital releases, accused the government of shifting payment deadlines despite completed verification and clearance.

With the blockade entering its second day, traffic congestion and legislative delays intensified across Abuja’s Three Arms Zone. Lawmakers are expected to reconvene later to resume plenary once decisions from the executive session are concluded.

PoliticsFG Reject US ‘country Of Particular Concern’ Label As Misinterpretation Of Niger by SJMag1(op): 3:07pm On Nov 06, 2025
The federal government has rejected the United States’ (U.S) designation of the country as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) as a misinterpretation of Nigeria’s security situation and ongoing efforts to combat terrorism.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, November 5, the minister of information and national orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the U.S label and related statements reflect a flawed understanding of the nation’s complex security challenges.

The U.S. recently assigned Nigeria the CPC status following claims of a “Christian genocide” cited by some American political commentators.

The Nigerian government, along with several organizations, has rejected the allegation, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of the country’s security crisis.

Idris said the president Bola Tinubu administration remained committed to ending terrorism and protecting the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians.

“The government and people of the federal republic of Nigeria have taken note of the position of the government of the United States of America on Nigeria over violations of religious freedom,” Idris said.

“Nigeria faces longstanding security challenges that have impacted Christians and Muslims alike, and we mourn every loss of life, knowing that even a single loss of life is one too many.”

Idris said president Tinubu had demonstrated strong political will to end insecurity since assuming office in May 2023, citing major progress recorded by the armed forces and intelligence agencies.

According to him, security operations across the country had led to the neutralization of more than 13,500 terrorists and the arrest of over 17,000 suspects now facing interrogation or prosecution for various offences.

“Nigeria’s security agencies have neutralized more than 13,500 terrorists through sustained operations and arrested over 17,000 suspects, who are now undergoing interrogation or prosecution for various offences.”

He added that more than 9,800 victims of abduction, including women and children, had been rescued and reintegrated, while over 124,000 insurgents and their families had surrendered to Nigerian forces, handing over more than 11,000 weapons.

“The menace of terrorism in Nigeria does not exclusively target any religious or ethnic group,” he said.

“As in many parts of the world, extremism is mindless, blind to religion, tribe, or class. It is a war against all peace-loving Nigerians and against the unity and progress of our great nation.”

The minister noted that the federal government had increased defence spending, modernized military equipment, and reorganized the command structure through the appointment of new service chiefs to improve coordination and accountability. These reforms, he said, had delivered “real and remarkable” results.

Idris said Nigeria’s security challenge must be viewed within the broader regional context, pointing to instability in the Sahel, the fallout of Libya’s collapse, and the flow of illegal weapons across West Africa.

He said these factors continued to fuel terrorism, banditry, and farmer-herder clashes, particularly in states like Benue and Plateau.

He emphasized that Nigeria had consistently called for stronger collaboration through Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union, and partnerships with global allies to stem the tide of terrorism.

The minister added that cooperation with the U.S had already yielded concrete results, including the delivery of Super Tucano aircraft and the planned acquisition of AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters for the Nigerian air force.

“We call on our American friends and partners to approach the Nigerian situation with an understanding of its complex realities, a vast, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious nation making significant strides in economic reform and bolstering its security architecture,” Idris said.

The minister disclosed that the government had intensified the prosecution of terror suspects, including those linked to attacks in Ondo and Benue states.

Two suspected leaders of Ansaru, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Nigeria, had been arrested and were facing trial, while 125 terrorists had so far been convicted.

He said these prosecutions demonstrated the government’s commitment to ensuring justice through due process, adding that Nigeria’s counterterrorism approach combined military force with adherence to the rule of law.

Idris reaffirmed president Tinubu’s commitment to the constitutional guarantees of liberty and freedom of religion, noting that both Christians and Muslims held leadership positions within the military and intelligence community.

He said the federal government would continue diplomatic engagement with the US government and other partners to correct what he described as “misjudgment” of the country’s true security situation.

“The country is in capable and steady hands with president Tinubu leading the charge to boost our economy, strengthen our military and intelligence capabilities, and move Nigeria towards greater and shared prosperity,” he added.

The minister urged Nigerians to remain confident in the government’s resolve to eliminate terrorism and safeguard national unity, adding that constructive engagement, not misrepresentation, remained the path to global peace and cooperation.

PoliticsSenate Approve 14-year Jail Term For Sexual Harassment In Tertiary Institutions by SJMag1(op): 11:02am On Nov 06, 2025
The Senate has approved the Sexual Harassment of Students (Prevention and Prohibition) Bill, 2025 (HB.1597), prescribing up to 14 years imprisonment for educators found guilty of sexually harassing students in tertiary institutions.

The legislation, presented by Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, seeks to eliminate all forms of sexual misconduct within academic institutions and establish a clear legal framework for enforcement and punishment.

Bamidele explained that the bill aims to promote and protect ethical standards in tertiary education, the sanctity of the student-educator fiduciary relationship of authority, dependency and respect for human dignity.

According to the Senate, “Any person who commits any of the offences or acts specified in clause 4 (1), (2) and (3) of this Bill is guilty of an offence of felony and shall, on conviction, be sentenced to an imprisonment term of up to 14 years but not less than 5 years, without an option of a fine.

“(i) Any person who commits any of the offences or acts specified in Clause 4 (4), (5) and (6) of this Bill is guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to an imprisonment term of up to 5 years but not less than 2 years, without an option of a fine.”

The bill allows students who allege harassment to seek civil remedies for breach of fiduciary duty, maintaining the same standard of proof as civil proceedings. It also defines offences such as soliciting sexual favours, making sexual advances, coercing others to harass, or engaging in unwelcome physical contact.

It adds that marriage between the educator and student is the only valid defence, and consent cannot be used as a defence where a power relationship exists.

“Sexual harassment complaints may be filed by the student, relatives, guardians or any concerned party to the Police or Attorney-General, with copies also submitted to the institution’s Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committee,” the Senate stated.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole urged lawmakers to broaden the bill’s reach beyond tertiary institutions, saying, “There is no need to restrict sexual harassment issues to students. We should craft this law in a way that gives it universal application.”

Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the session, clarified that the bill was up for concurrence, noting that existing laws already cover workplace-related harassment.

The bill, which now awaits harmonisation and presidential assent, follows growing national outrage over recurring sex-for-grades scandals in Nigerian universities and longstanding calls from activists for stronger legal protection for students.
