A devastating photo shows the body of a father and his 23-month-old daughter lying face down in shallow water after they drowned whle trying to get into the US.

The bodies of Oscar Alberto Martinez Ramirez and his 23-month-old daughter Valeria were discovered on Monday on the bank of the Rio Grande. His daughter was tucked inside his black t-shirt with her arm arond his neck, showing that she clung to him in her final moments.




The image was captured by journalist Julia Le Duc and published by Mexican newspaper La Jornada. It highlights the perils faced by mostly Central American migrants fleeing violence and poverty and hoping for asylum in the United States.

Ramirez, from El Salvador, was frustrated because the family was unable to present themselves to U.S. authorities and request asylum. So he swam across the river on Sunday with his daughter, Valeria. He set her on the U.S. bank of the river and started back for his wife, Tania Vanessa Avalos, but seeing him move away the girl threw herself into the waters. Martinez returned and was able to grab Valeria, but the current swept them both away. The account was based on remarks by a tearful Avalos to police at the scene.


Details of the incident were confirmed by Martinez’s mother back in El Salvador, Rosa Ramirez, who spoke with her daughter-in-law by phone afterwards.

Ramirez said: "When the girl jumped in is when he tried to reach her, but when he tried to grab the girl, he went in further … and he couldn’t get out. He put her in his shirt, and I imagine he told himself, 'I’ve come this far' and decided to go with her."

The search for Martinez and his daughter was suspended Sunday due to darkness, and their bodies were discovered the next morning near Matamoros, Mexico, across from Brownsville, Texas, several hundred yards from where they had tried to cross and just half a mile from an international bridge.

Ramirez said her son and his family left El Salvador on April 3 and spent about two months at a shelter in Tapachula, near Mexico’s border with Guatemala.

Ramire added: "I begged them not to go, but he wanted to scrape together money to build a home. They hoped to be there a few years and save up for the house."

El Salvador’s foreign ministry said it was working to assist the family including Avalos, who was at a border migrant shelter following the drownings.

The bodies were expected to be flown to El Salvador on Thursday.

Ghana defender John Boye made history on Tuesday night when he picked up a red card in his first appearance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt. The Black Stars defender became the first player to be sent off during thr tournament which began on Fridaym 21st of June.

The Metz defender picked up a second yellow card early in the second half after earning a warning in the first half. Boye had been impressive for the Black Stars although he could not prevent the Squirrels of Benin from finding the back of the net in the first half. His impressive performance at the back had allowed the Black Stars play from the back and get two goals courtesy of Andre and Jordan Ayew.

He made his tournament debut in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations match against Botswana in January 2012. He was part of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations team that took a silver medal after they lost to Ivory Coast in an 8-9 penalty shoot out.

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a man who specializes in hugging his victims before stealing their phones.


The suspect, Olasukanmi was arrested at Ikeja under Bridge on Monday, June 25, 2019, after it was discovered that he and his gang members are fond of stylishly hugging any individual they come across at public gatherings before stealing their phones from them.


According to the authorities, the suspect will be charged to court.

Abdel-Adheem Hassan, a lawyer in Sudan has told the BBC that the internet has been restored after a three-week shutdown but only for him.



On Sunday, Abdel-Adheem Hassan won a lawsuit against telecoms operator Zain Sudan over the blackout ordered by Sudan's military rulers. However, he says his victory is only benefitting him so far as he filed the case in a personal capacity.



The internet was cut off after security forces violently dispersed protesters camping in central Khartoum. The protesters want an end to military rule following the coup against long-time leader Omar al-Bashir in April.



Hassan said he is currently the only civilian in the country able to access the internet without resorting to complicated hacks. He said he is going back to court on Tuesday to win the right for more Sudanese people.



"We have a court session tomorrow and another one the day after tomorrow. Hopefully one million people will gain internet access by the end of the week," Hassan said.



BBC Arabic reporter Mohamed Osman in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan also confirms that the internet remains blocked despite Sunday's court order.

A 56-year-old man, Rasaki Balogun and his girlfriend were found dead in his home at number 16 Taiwo Oke Victory Estate in Ejigbo, Lagos state on Thursday June 20th.

A statement released by the command's Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, today June 24th, says on June 20th, one Akorede Balogun said to be the wife of the deceased, reported at Iba Police Station that her husband was found dead with his mistress in his sitting room.

A team of detectives led by the Divisional Police Officer Ejigbo visited the scene. Corpses of the man and his mistress were found in the pool of their blood with the woman laying on a knife. The man is said to be living alone in the house while his family lives in a different place.

Bala said the identity of the mistress is yet to be established as he was said to have picked her up about two days to the incident from unknown location.

The Crime scene was sealed off for forensic analysis while the corpses were evacuated to Hospital for autopsy.

Homicide detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba have taken over the case on the instruction of the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Zubairu Muazu.

Investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding their death.

The Police in Anambra state have warned parents to look out for seven signs which they described as tell-tale signs that their wards were getting involved in cultism.

The Spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed, in a press release made available to DAILY POST, identified seven early signs that show a young person was taking to cultism.


They include:
1-late night

2- love for music
3-love for specific colours

4- difficulty in exposing the body
5-isolation

6-anger and smoking

7- making new friends.

Mohammed said, “Early detection of a child’s engagement in cultism can help stop the full involvement of that child in the evil act and also save the life of the child from impending dangers that lies ahead.

“Bad friends contribute a lot to joining cultism. Try to know the friends your child goes out with most times, find out their details and find out where they hang out. Doing this will help you to be sure your child is not in the company of friends that are cultist because sooner or later the child may join them in their evil acts.


“If your son or daughter is the jovial type that loves keeping company but suddenly starts keeping to him or herself watch out. This is very common among some cultists as they love to be alone.

“You can do a check on the type of music your child has gotten newly and loves listening to over and over again. Some of these songs are fraternity songs containing their chants and anthems.”

Haruna added that, “Some parents are not aware that their children smoke under their roofs even in their private rooms. Check your children’s rooms when they are not around and do it into detail, checking every corner in the room. You can also check the fingers or lips of the child to see any strange darkening. If your child gets angry at the slightest provocation that is not usual with the child, it can be a sign.


“Take note of your child if he or she has suddenly fallen in love with a particular color. For example, the child can wear a color for a week or can’t do without the color in any form of dressing. This can be a danger signal you need to look into.

“Cultists don’t like to expose their body especially the back because they have some wounds they don’t like to expose to people around them. Watch if your child suddenly finds it hard to UnCloth in your presence or goes to the bathroom with clothes on and come out of the bathroom.”
