Lafarge cement was acquired by Huaxin Cement Co. Ltd, having purchased 83.81% stake of the company.

Whenever the high price of cement is discussed in Nigeria, most will accuse Dangote for being exploitative. But we have other cement companies in Nigeria, including the one owned by Chinese.

Cheap goods are sometimes associated with Chinese companies. So why isn't this Chinese cement company crashing the price of cement in Nigeria?

They are ordinary Chinese citizens who saw an opportunity in Nigeria for trading.

What was the opportunity?
The prices of Chinese goods in Nigeria are like usually well above 100% marked up by the Nigerian traders.

So, the Chinese trader come to Nigeria, BUY goods from the same Chinese market and sell at less than 50% mark up.

Of course buyers will go for the Cheaper price which also comes with a better quality as they wouldn't negotiate that the manufacturer produce INFERIOR quality just like Emeka and Chisom would have done.


Now, market is slowing down for the boys at Alaba and market is booming for the Chinese. The Alaba boys think that the Chinese are the problem BUT No! It is their WICKED profit margin that is the problem.

Furthermore, let the Chinese compete with Nigerians, I believe it will be healthy. If they are more to go round the price will be dropped too. USA asked Nigeria to kick the Chinese out of Nigeria, that's what's playing out. I may partly agree that the Chinese shouldn't be in the competition at the downstream supply chain but it doesn't necessarily mean certain Chinese entities controls the entire value chain from manufacturing straight down to consumer market. Yes they may edge on the advantage of sourcing from their home country but an average Nigerian with capital, has similar opportunity too, but would rather spend on "I've arrived" instead of actually building a sustainable model, not to mention overcharging as if they run a monopoly. Yes you may not be able to beat the Chinese at their own game but the edge is smooth enough for smart and sensible positioning in the market.

If Nigeria/Nigerians succeeds in chasing out the Chinese and they retaliates from upstream, life will be incredibly tough for the average Nigerian - that I can assure you. Maybe the kids and the ignoramus on here that actually vomits anti-China rhetorics from their cheap Tecno or Infinix phone will finally get sense and see how the joke tells on them.
