CrimeNames Of Chibok Girls To Be Swapped; Abandoned Girl Pregnant by SlimSkipper(op): 6:02am On Sep 27, 2014
New hope for the nation has appeared again as it was learnt yesterday that Boko Haram listed 19 sect commanders for the swap with 30 Chibok girls, whose names were also provided. The Nation reports with reference to its source that the Nigerian government and the coordinators of talks with the group have this list.

Apart from 19 key commanders names, the list includes 30 girls, who may be released to test the government’s commitment, after which the remaining 189 children could be set free.

According to the report, there are 15 Christian and 15 Muslim girls, who may reunite with their families after Eid-el-Kabir festival when the sides resume negotiations. It is believed, however, that the Nigerian authorities still insist on the release of all the girls at one time, which would be a “meaningful swap deal”. Moreover, the government will return to the talks with only a request: release of all the girls, the source said.
Recent negotiation in Abuja were attended by human rights activist and President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria Shehu Sani, Red Cross officials, former Information Minister Edwin Clark and other prominent figures. Boko Haram side was represented by a 2-man delegation.

The list of Chibok girls who might be soon released was composed on the basis of the discovery that they are married with children. The names were made available to those in attendance.

By the time of filing this report 20 out of 30 names from the list have been obtained, and the list of commanders was received in full.

Christian girls: Mary Usman, Julie Yakubu, Jummai Paul, Rahila Bitrus, Rabika Lukas, Rodha John, Naomi Yohanna, Ruth Kolo, Tabitha Fagu and Hannatu Isiaku.

Muslim girls: Kwadugu Manu, Hauwa Wule, Aishatu Grema, Aisha Lawan, Halima Gamba, Kabu Malla, Mariam Abubakar, Rakiya Gamba, Hamsatu Abubakar and Hasana Adamu.
Boko Haram commanders (19): Awwal Albani Sultaniya, Malam Abdullahi Damasak, Mallam Bashir, Baa Malam, Mallam Tijjani al Barnawi, Mallam Musa Moby, Mallam Awara, Mallam Zindar Zindawi, Baa Alhaji, Bana Mongono, Baraa Mallami, Sheikh Umar ibn Mustapha, Mallam Jabir Al Jjihad, Tanko al Kurd, Mallam Aradu, Abidina Janzila and Mallam Aboul Kaka.

The source added that the sides were very close to sealing the deal.

“We hope that at the resumption of talks after the Eid-el Kabir festival, all the negotiators will have a common ground on all issues involved in the deal so that the girls can at least regain freedom. Although the sect may opt for a phased release, beginning with 30 girls, the government is insisting on wholesale freedom. There is a ray of hope.”

Another source disclosed why the authorities insisted on the release of all 219 girls.

“Some of the commanders are ‘deadly’ because they are ready to lay down their lives any time. They do not hide their commitment to the sect even in their various detention facilities in Maiduguri, Kaduna and Abuja.

“In fact, security agencies are skeptical about freedom for Malam Abdullahi Damasak, who is rated as the ‘most lethal’ among the commanders. The government is circumspect that if the 19 commanders are released, Boko Haram might only let 30 girls free instead of 219. The government does not want to fall into any negotiation trap which will compound the woes of the abducted girls.”

When contacted, the government officials were unwilling to comment on any development of the situation, but civil rights activist Fred Eno, who was also involved in the negotiations, told The Telegraph of UK last week:

“We felt the negotiations would go better with the backing of a major international humanitarian organisation like the ICRC. There have been two or three ICRC people at each meeting – international staff rather than Nigerians – and they accompany the government security agents to the various prisons and detention centres to identify the people that Boko Haram want released.”

CrimeEbola Victims Ressurect During Burial by SlimSkipper(op):
The villagers who believed two female victims of the killer disease have been resurrected and are now walking among the living were shocked at the incident when it happened. Mirror reports that the victims, who are both females in their 40s and 60s, died of the deadly virus in separate communities in Nimba County, Liberia. But the pair were said to have risen from their deaths and are now walking among the living, causing panic and fear among locals. The two victims late Dorris Quoi of Hope Village Community and Ma Kebeh, in her late 60s, were about to be taken for burial when they resurrected from the dead, according to the New Dawn Nimba County, a local newspaper.
Ma Kebeh was reported to be indoors for two nights without food and medication before her alleged death. However, it would be worthy to note that Nimba County has recently reported unusual news of Ebola cases, including one about a native doctor from the county, who claimed that he could cure infected victims, dying of the virus himself last week.

The local tabloid however made it known that since the Ebola outbreak in Nimba County, this is the first incident of dead victims resurrecting. The Ebola outbreak has already killed around 2,800 people in five West African countries this year while an estimated 5,800 people have been infected with the virus, which has no known cure.

America’s respected Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has predicted there could be up to 1.4million cases of deadly Ebola by the end of January. The CDC, which successfully treated two US doctors infected with the disease, released the worrying report based on assumptions that cases have been dramatically under reported.

The Centre’s scientists believe there may be as many as 21,000 reported and unreported cases in just Liberia and SierraLeone alone by the end of this month.

The World Health Organisation has already warned the number of people infected with the Ebola could reach 20,000 by the beginning of November if steps to contain the outbreak are not accelerated.

CrimeHow Army Took Down Shekau – Investigations by SlimSkipper(op): 5:01am On Sep 25, 2014
New details on how the impostor of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau lost his life have been revealed.

The Nigerian Army took down a commander who acted as Shekau in all the latest Boko Haram videos during a shootout in Konduga last week.It is said that the deceased was ambushed by the military, the same strategy applied by the sect on the army for some time now.

The first attack on Konduga by the army surprised the militants who numbered in their hundreds.

After an extensive seven hours of fighting hundreds of insurgents lost their lives. Their arms and ammunition were also seized.

The military men had wisely forced captured members of the sect to send a message to Shekau that they (insurgents) have routed the troops.

The captured members were promised a less severe sentence if they cooperated and hence they were convinced. The captured insurgents had explained that Shekau normally moves in a convoy of vehicles painted in military colours, while he sits in a MOWAG armoured tank with Boko Haram inscription on its front. Then Shekau was called and spoken to in Arabic, reassuring him that Konduga is under the sect’s reign. These were all done with other captured men singing the victory song in Kanuri language they normally sing at the background.

This fully convinced the imposter Shekau that all is well and the message is authentic because it came from his chief courier. He took his boys along to Konduga, heavily armed with anti-aircraft weapons, general purpose machine guns, multiple Kalashnikov (AK 47) rifles and explosive devices.

As he and his members entered the town, they were ambushed by the military. Immediately he noticed something was wrong, it has already been too late.

He then ordered his men to get out of the vehicles and to start shooting in all directions.

This was enough for the army to start responding with fire, and when he understood the his guns could not overpower the infantry and artillery weaponry used by the Nigerian forces, he jumped out of the MOWAG and made to escape.

However, eagle-eyed Nigerian soldiers spotted him and opened fire, shattering his legs in the process. It was learnt that he also received bullet wounds in other parts of his body leading to his bleeding to death.Cameroonian military personnel had claimed to have been the ones to carry out the raid, but the Defence Headquarters yesterday dismissed the insinuation.

On their Twitter handle, the DHQ said: “There was no raid whatsoever in any part of Nigeria’s territory in pursuit of terrorists as claimed in some reports allegedly quoting Cameroon military authorities.

“All operations ongoing in the environs of Konduga & all associated border location within the country are completely being undertaken by Nigerian troops.” WE SAY KUDOS TO THE NIGERIAN ARMY

NYSCNYSC May Review N4,000 Online Registration – DG by SlimSkipper(op): 4:38am On Sep 25, 2014
There are indications that the National Youth Service Corps may bow to public pressure and reduce the controversial N4,000 online registration fee the NYSC intended to charge prospective corps members.

But that will not take effect from the coming orientation but in the later future.

The Director of Press and Public Relations in NYSC, Mrs. Bose Aderibigbe, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja between the Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.- Gen. Johnson Olawumi, and the Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Youth Affairs, Mr. Jude Imagwe.

She said, “He (Imagwe) came to find out what is going on about the outcry against the payment of N4,000 online registration by prospective corps members. The DG told him that the N4,000 being paid is not for call-up letters but just for the operation and provision of infrastructural facilities in all NYSC camps and its 37 secretariats and offices in the 774 local governments nationwide. It is for putting these Internet and manpower facilities to ensure easy operation of prospective corps members.

“The DG has stated that the N4,000 issue might not be reviewed for now but during subsequent orientation, it might be possible after management and Sidmach Technologies have sat down to see the possibility of the reduction. So for now, it might not be possible but subsequent ones, if it is possible the entire public will know about it.”

There had been criticisms against the N4,000 fee but the NYSC had risen to its defence, saying the computerisation would ease the rigorous processes involved in the collection of call-up letters.

The full computerisation of the mobilisation process beginning with the 2014 Batch ‘C’ mobilisation exercise was endorsed at the 2014 NYSC Annual Management Conference, held in Calabar.

The Director of Corps Mobilisation in the NYSC, Mr. Anthony Ani, stated that the innovation would not bring about job losses for members of staff.

PhonesGoogle And Apple To Introduce Default Encryption To Protect Users by SlimSkipper(op): 7:43am On Sep 20, 2014
Google has announced that its next mobile operating system, Android L, will encrypt users' data by default.

The measure will make it more difficult for private information to be hacked or handed to law enforcement agencies.

On Thursday, Apple said that devices running its new iOS8 software would be encrypted by default, with even the company itself unable to gain access.

Both firms have offered encryption for some time, but many users were unaware of its existence or had not enabled it.

Earlier this week, Apple's boss Tim Cook posted an online message assuring users the company's philosophy was that a "great customer experience shouldn't come at the expense of your privacy".
Swipe

As well as announcing default encryption for all devices running the new iOS8 software, Mr Cook took a thinly veiled swipe at Google, saying that Apple would not use its customers' information to sell things to them.

"We don't 'monetise' the information you store on your iPhone or in iCloud," he wrote, "and we don't read your email or your messages to get information to market to you."

He added that although Apple does have an advertising business, called iAd, the function can be disabled by users.

Shortly after, Google announced its stance on privacy, also embracing default encryption. A spokesman said: "For over three years, Android has offered encryption, and keys are not stored off of the device, so they cannot be shared with law enforcement.

"As part of our next Android release, encryption will be enabled by default out of the box, so you won't even have to think about turning it on."

Both Apple and Google follow in the footsteps of the now somewhat beleaguered Blackberry, which has encrypted data by default for some time.

The firms' focus on privacy comes after nude photos of celebrities were leaked online earlier this month.

The breach, which affected actress Jennifer Lawrence, among others, was linked by some security experts to vulnerabilities in Apple's iCloud storage service.
Law enforcement

The introduction of default encryption also protects US firms from having to hand over data to law enforcement agencies.

As the companies themselves do not have access to users' passwords, which unlock the encryption, they are not actually in possession of the data concerned.

Several of the largest US tech firms have been fighting government requests for their users' private data, including Microsoft, Google, Twitter, Facebook and Dropbox.

David Emm, a senior researcher at security firm Kaspersky Lab, told the BBC that automatic encryption was "probably more about privacy than about protection".

"Customers will find some reassurance in the fact that their data can't routinely fall into third-party hands," he said.

However he added that the measure only "applies to stuff on a [Apple or Android] device, but not necessarily to stuff you put in the cloud, which could still be accessible to law enforcement agencies".
